2024 Mercedes AMG GT review. Now with 4WD, is AMG's 584bhp hotrod even more (or less) fun to drive?

Jun 11, 2024
Well welcome to a new video from Harry's Garage and today's car is the Mercedes AMG GT, this extreme version of the AMG Coupe runs in GT3 races in Germany, maybe it competes against the 911 and it is quite different from the previous AMG GT because It has a slightly longer wheelbase. it has

more

two seats in the back, a very large boot which you wouldn't really expect and there are a number of fundamental changes under the skin and I suppose the biggest one is four wheel

drive

, but it has a serious performance 3.2 seconds, no 62 uh 196 mph speed is limited and costs a lot

more

money.

Now this list is at 164.50, which puts it in serious competition. Let's take a closer look at the previous version. You have to look closely to see the difference. It is a slightly larger grill. and you have to remember that this is the starting point, this is the GT, we can see if you look back, there are always Blackish editions and R versions etc., so this is the starting point, but it is a very aggressive car like you will see. to see when we can

drive

it. I love that it actually has the original AMG badge instead of having the star or Mercedes because they are very proud that this is developed by AMG and if you find this in the In the UK we only have the 21 on 295 30 21 wheels on the front part and this one has steel brakes.

More Interesting Facts About,

There is a carbon option if you need it, but what an interesting wheel design I couldn't figure out what these veins were for. They don't mention it in the press panel. I think the plastic must have some arrow reason for having them. I imagine the V8 B of A badge for Matic on the side is actually a fake vent, so there's no mistaking the race car. there's a vent that works and then on the side here we press this and the door handle comes out and the first thing I noticed when I bought this car is that it feels like a very light door, so then I turned it with a magnet and uh Yeah, Everything seems to be aluminum in this car.

The hood everywhere,

even

when I lifted the hood, the actual internal structure where the suspension mounts, which appeared to be alloy and the only thing I could find on the car, is actually this tailgate. We will see in a moment when we open it that it is a small spoiler that appears at speed, there is a fixed spoiler option if you opt for a higher performance package on your gt63 tires at the rear, a little wider 305 30X 21, they come rounds and then the traditional AMG quad exhaust, oh my god it growls, wait until you hear it from inside, it's definitely some kind of old school AMG noise and then there's no way to open the trunk on the outside, but I have the key with me if I press. that goes up and we've actually lowered the seats so you can see how big that space is.

You know, it's GT, I guess because of the amount of space in it, there's a little hatch there that just keeps you nice and that kind of thing. Close it like this from the inside, well, we'll walk through the interior in more detail when we get out, uh, but there's no escaping the biggest iPad you've ever seen stuck in a dashboard, unfortunately, it shares it with its sort of sister card. The SL's seats are great, although we'll come back to the seats later, but under the hood and it's the familiar AMG 4L V8 hot V, so you've got the turbo sitting in the middle of the V, rodded and tied up. on the side that used to be the way to do it, they do it for packaging reasons and they also get a quicker throttle, but there is a fundamental difference if you had lifted the engine in the previous GT, that engine is further forward because there is a complete redesign Under the skin of this car, the previous version had a transaxle or gearbox as it rotated mounted where with the rear axle at the rear of the car for weight distribution and that car was two wheel drive only and it had 54 pesos per peso in the rear and 46 front this is the other way around this is 54 front 46 rear because the gearbox is mounted on the back of the engine and it also has four wheel drive so you have a lot of gubbins driving these wheels, which was not on the previous version, so it's a big change on this car.
Let's take it outside, see how the lightweight door handles. I mentioned it, it's like this every time you walk in, you notice that aluminum door and then you come across this, oh my gosh, yeah, there's no way around it, it's a dominant iPad that's also in the SL version of this car, as well as in the GT, and it's all there, it's a very busy steering wheel and they also had to add two spokes. to have it all there so if this cruise control is the radio control and then you can change the screen, which I'll do in a moment and then on the inside there's lashings of this carbon fiber, shiny carbon fiber on everywhere, kind of a High Line, a weird kind of Mercedes Writing on the windshield that's in cursive and then a very distinctive Monet on the front because I can see the two bumps, it's like the 600 SLR or something, you know , the evocative shape of this car has a panoramic roof, I couldn't see it in the configurator, but it's there and then this space in the back is 911-esque when you look behind you here well, yeah, a nice little glove box, two holes, a lot of, um, yeah, USB C and not very deep, weird things, it has this kind of thing where the equipment was. change in the controller for all of this, but now it's just a static style mode, something under here, wire

less

cup holders, it's charging that kind of stuff and a pretty small wheel and cool seats.
I mentioned it before. I have done many. miles on this car and they are very good glove compartment yeah there is nothing hidden in there the storage is here this is what you really expect from Mercedes and then turn it on and start the engine over here but it's like this iPad is so big that was hidden behind. here, but I turn it off, there's a lot to do if I press it. This is the first screen I go to every time I get in this car and then I can turn off the speed warning there and turn off the lane assist there, so I like that.
It's just pressing that button and then it's very easy to activate all these safety systems, which are the regulations now on the 24 cars. It's fun for me the conventional dash Rev limit 7,000 Ann speed 220 mph Speedo, but I have a choice of screens here if I just press start, well, I can flip through, yeah, a low-key classic map, sporty, Super Sport Track, quite similar to a super sport. I could put it, but there's almost technological overload, there's so much type of setup down here, I've got something. to monitor how the engine is now, that's individual comfort, what comes by default is Sport Sports Plus and then race, which can do all kinds of things.
Honestly, you can delve into everything that is possible in this car, there are

even

options for where. you actually want to make the car um two wheel drive drift mode do everything possible with the parameters, but I'm very happy with my solo mode, which we'll get to where I show you here, so I've gone. The ride is dynamic suspension with comfort and the dynamics are professional. I'm not a professional, but I quite like the setup, so yeah, a lot of things on modern cars are not there to do, these vents are good too, in fact, strangely, they move like this and you.
I think you turn them on and off in the center, although that doesn't move. It's all here somewhere if I press Weather. I think it's the entire Climate menu. Yes, I have all kinds of things to do here if I want to do it. heated seats and yes, the things that don't seek heat are down here, let's go back to where we want to get away from, it's a wand, it's gone from here, it's a wand here like my Rolls-Royce and other things, so yes, let's drive. Wow, even at this early stage, just get out of here.
I pretty much know I'm in an AMG, there's this Grumble, there's an angry engine in front. I love that there's that AMG signature, it's even eight o'clock anyway, let's go out and get something. better roads, right, this is only in normal mode, comfort as it says and, yes, as I say, it is very obvious that it is from AMG, but relaxed rides are pleasant, this wheel is covered in suede, it is very pleasant to grip and yes, it has good visibility and I'm just in a happy place, sitting here and the reasonable noise is a little bit loud here.
I guess it's a pretty extreme car, big Pilot Sport um S5 tires and it goes 77 78 DB on my noisy part of the road, but what I'm eager to show. This is what happens when I touch this controller down here and we get on that little stretch of road that I use for testing and there's a different character to this car, not some weird little symbol on the dash that seems to show tire temperatures. and they turn blue like amber and then red and I think red means heat rather than danger, more like overheated, but it's a bit of a strange way to do it.
Tire temperatures, but anyway, next up is the uphill jet, yeah, I should put this on my individual. adjustments there it is and there's a loud exhaust so you can valve the exhaust so let's see what's going on here still on Auto here we go. Yes, yes, a different type of character, as you can see, it's almost like a misfah while you mash. that and Charlie was here and commented that it's not a misfire, there's something they've done to the mapping to give it this angry sound and outside it's surprisingly quiet compared to the motion that happens here as you walk away. and it's yeah, it's fast, I mean what it is because it's all that torque, it's a much higher torque in this 590 pound-feet torque is Monster 800 Newton M, but it needs that power because it's heavier than the version outgoing by quite a bit. margin I weighed it and it weighs 1,940 kilos, that is, 300 kilos more than the previous version, and I wonder how they did it because of that aluminum body, you know, on the outside it is all aluminum, yes, it has four-wheel drive , but I can't add 300 kilos, it is a little longer to have room for boots and those rear seats, but that is dramatically heavier and, yes, it is a little disappointing, it has to be said that we should have changed that.
Come on, yeah, I think they're pretty real and they drive really well. It is a very misleading suspension. It basically has no stabilizer bars. Load the shock and have height adjustable decks and control roll that way instead of having. an anti-ar and it just means that the wheels are freer to do their thing and absorb bumps and hills like we have here, it's a little bit, I mean, it's sharp in the steering, I don't know what kind of camber it's going up through the Front, but I imagine we'll put it in Comfort, actually pure Comfort all the way.
It's really good at eating up miles and dealing with road surfaces like this, controlling those bumps, staying close, not chasing cers in its Comfort mode, great setup on this one. The car goes over that bump, it runs over here, it's got some bumps, it's pretty quick steering, it's also got rear steering on this rear axle, so yeah, it's a point, you point it into a corner like that and, oh, you're almost there. reversing the direction. Because it's so crisp almost for the weird, I think because of the combination of the steering and yet it doesn't make me feel nervous in any way, so I like the setup, yeah, it's probably time to look at some things that I I like them and I don't like them with this car.
I'll start with the interior which I don't like, I just can't stand this, at this price I think it's a lazy way to control the car and I wish the designers would move away from this place, this one here completely dominates, can they, can they. Make beautiful details like these air intakes and other parts here. There's a big lever, the Nappa lever, how the stitching is done, but all I see is this and then I see a little bit of a mess here. I quite like these controllers. down here, but I almost think it's excessive to have small screens on those too, why do we need there to be one, two, three, four screens in this car and that's three too many?
Two prices, that's a high price. I'm going to mention it in the conclusion too but the starting price of 165,000 with 63 is a lot of cash, there will be a 55 version of this car and that price is 125,000, they believe it will be launched next year and it is the same engine , just slightly out of tune, all the same. Po positive price wise, everything is included in that price, everything you see here, the only extra on this car is the Dri resistance, which is lane control and things and cameras, and that costs £25,000 and then neither I like the weight, how did they do it?
So heavy on this aluminum, this South race car that it will give you headaches. I can't understand why it's an almost 2 ton car and then there's the 8800e version of this with the 800 horsepower hybrid, what's that going to weigh? Another dislike, well I For me the fuel economy isn't great, it's usually in the teens and they've downsized the fuel tank and the 200 mile range is what you should be working on before you have to go and find a feeling like you might get 220 something like that, so yeah, not that good. I wish I had a bigger tank, right?
Let's shoot it over here, I can only trust either end. I can finish, yes. Turn off that traction in thefour wheels that just helps you get ahead, but you feel it. like it ducks, it only sends up to 50% power to the front, it feels like a rear wheel drive car, it feels exciting despite having four wheel drive and unlike previous amgs you can actually deploy the power with those four Drive Z instead of just toasting the rear tires if you turn everything into another positive, there's very smooth traction control, it's very smart, it's intuitive. I don't know exactly how it works, but I don't feel the need to turn it off or on. modulate it down others I like about this car the characterEngines give character in cars, it has always been the same and it is especially so in this car, there is a kind of hum inside, it is not a distinctive side, it starts, enjoy the V8 and the noise, the complaints and the power delivery and it defines this car, gives it immense character and yet it's easy to live with, so I love the engine and transmission of this car and its gear changes fast too.
I would also like this nine speed gearbox to be neither a tri AO nor a torque converter, it has a wet clutch. The movement away feels wonderfully controlled at low speed. The maneuver was in the city and stuff and then you put it on an open road and it's pretty quick changes. I also really like that gearbox. so inclusion, what do I think of this car? Well, it's strange when it first arrived on the first day, a little annoying. I got annoyed with all the technology and stuff and then I kept using it for a few more days and the more I used it.
The more I liked it, the more the Mercedes quality came across, that ease of use, the practicality, the enjoyment of the engine, the connectivity, the way it can deliver its power, the way it feels naughty, as I want it to An AMG feels like that depending on the moment. I continue, I really have to like it. I think the test is whether I would buy one and that's when I start to doubt and it all comes down to price because with 165,000 you can also buy an Aston Martin Advantage. it's the same price, the Aston is about 250 kilos lighter and has the same engine, it probably has the same cars.
I haven't driven one yet, but I will have one in a few weeks. I think that's where my money would be spent. go and then there are other things that greet me with a similar price, you know the Ferrari Roma probably only costs £10,000 more than this and if you look at the sort of thing, if you're going to do it with finances, it probably has a better residual value. So it'll probably cost you

less

per month than this but it's a great car and you know it's a return because AMG has made some weird cars recently, don't mention the C63, the 4 cylinder hybrid, why do they do that? and um I like this, it's an AMG character, but I think my money will probably go elsewhere, but over time I'll be constantly looking at the qualifiers, I just see Oh look, AMG GT, it's one of those, oh , everyone is doing a lot of hype because fundamentally it's a really nice car, it feels AMG and I've enjoyed it, so there you have it, my conclusion on this AMG GT.
I hope you enjoyed this video, if it went well, keep watching and subscribing, more videos will be coming soon. soon oh
