Over the past few years we've made videos on multiple iterations of the Corvette ca, from the Stingray to the ZO6. We have gone to the factory. We have talked to the engineers who developed the car for many years and now it is time to r-ray the first Corvette with all-wheel drive and this adds electrification a motor in the front a battery pack that we detail all the technical aspects in the workshop The question is whether this is a true core, making it a super subtle car. This was a whole new ball game, so we had to come up with things about how we want the vehicle to feel, and I was a part of that. that team I was on um like um we all made big decisions together and to put the car where it is now and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out Corvettes Jack's favorite hobby, I bet you he's silently wishing he did it. What is this on a technical level? So let's talk about what this car is in general, as we heard from Trevor this is a Super GT and traditionally in the past which is the Corvette has struggled to be fair most sports cars struggle with this as you add performance, it decreases the usability bandwidth of the car, it becomes less accessible, it becomes less usable in the real world, think of Z6 and Z1 as cars you don't want to drive. est Corvette they've ever built, but it's actually more usable than a regular Stingray because of the all-wheel drive configuration E.
Why are they going with a electric motor? Why is it a hybrid? Well, the electric motor, the drive unit in front of this car was the easiest way to use. You could pack an all-wheel drive system into this vehicle that would have no mechanical drawbacks. I didn't have to run a driveshaft from the drive unit or gearbox at the rear of this vehicle. You could pack it away more easily without completely compromising the mechanical structure. of this vehicle now, before we talk about the power unit and the V8, let's talk about the body and chassis structure of this car, so the body of this vehicle is the wide body found on the Z6, which which is 3.6 inches wider than the standard Stingray.
The advantage of this is the arrow capability of this vehicle and its ability to accommodate a wider, wider wheel and tire package, so the aerodynamics of this car are essentially identical to that of a non-7-equipped Z6; however, the balance of the arrow has been shifted forward to take advantage of this. of the front drive and the front torque available from this electric motor, so in the highest downforce configuration you get about 366 pounds of total downforce at over 180 M hour and in the case of this car, because It doesn't have the gurnie flaps and all that. fun stuff is a zero lift and power setup is a very difficult thing to achieve in a sports car not to make these things feel like giant wings now from a chassis perspective body structure they actually had to alter the physical structure of the body of this vehicle Basically, from the front bulkhead forward, because of the drive unit in front of this vehicle, they had to lift the shock towers to fit the drive unit, of course, the half shafts.
In doing so, they had to add some structural integrity to get this. Giant shear plate on the front and top of the strut tower. They also added a strut tower mount to maintain the responsiveness they needed in track conditions. Physical suspension. The hardware is a carryover when it comes to control arms and bushings, so the bushings on the front and rear control arms are R off the Z6, meaning they are 30-40% stiffer than those of the z51; however, the r-ray's running rate is much smoother than the standard Z6, the Z6 with z7. It is 40 to 45% stiffer than a Stingray Z51.
It's probably between 10 and 15%. It's still a GT car and drives exceptionally well, particularly considering the size of the wheels and tires on this car, you get 275 at the front. 3 45 in the rear and this is the first time a Corvette has been developed with snow performance in mind. Day one this car comes standard with Michelin all season tires and then when you get the performance package which is really just a tire package. This car and an Arrow package add back the pilot 4S you're used to from the Z06. These are very, very capable cars. It's more aggressive in this car versus a Z6 despite the same amount of mechanical grip, well the truth is because propulsion capability was added to the front of this car they wanted to take advantage of the entire setup, the main reason which is why they actually increased the spring rate. 2 versus a z51 is the extra weight they had to negate and that's the fine print of this, this is a big heavy car at over 4,000 pounds and the Arrow of this car as well as the fact that there is more downforce , they had to add more spring. speed and it also makes sense because you're taking now, you're driving the front wheel, so those tires no longer just have to spin, but they're actually taking power at the same time, at least in track alignment, that's what you're saying. with 2.7 degrees of negative camber, that's a lot more than the car used well as the ZO6, so all of these adjustments again to Jack's Point weight, additional power, and of course the change in the car's design that drives the front wheels, that's what NE, that's what a lot of these changes need, however again, it's still about balance, what you would think of is having an all-season tire and that's what What I thought when I saw this for the first time.
I'm like, oh gosh, they're totally weakening this entire vehicle, but longitudinally these tires are incredible. In terms of grip, the fact that when you take off, even in wet conditions, you don't lose, you always seem to have traction, it's the perfect setup for most average street drivers to make use of the power that this is trying to apply, for what these tires were Designed specifically for this car with Michelin and Corvette, so they're not just like you know you're not going to pull Tire Rack and throw some like Tour Ring Tire, it's a specific tire for it and they're incredibly wide to Your point, no. something you traditionally see on regular cars yeah and they had to combine all of this like the sway bars that come from a mix of the standard Stingray and the z51 equipped cars so you can get the front bar from a Stingray and the rear bar of the one equipped with z51. cars, they combine all this with the way the brakes work.
Yes, hardware wise these are the carbon ceramics from the z7 equipped z6s. Carbon ceramics come standard. The unique thing about the brake setup on this vehicle is that yes, they are brake by wire just like the regular C8, but they combined the regen with the actual braking setup, so this car is always trying to regenerate even when you are in ABS and they combined that feeling with the pedal so that when you are braking in a braking zone or under normal conditions, the idea is that you don't feel that the regeneration system is working and it is true that regenerative braking is obviously very important for this car because we need to put power into the battery and there is no other way to do it, so you need to know it first.
We will all combine regeneration with friction braking and we have regeneration only on the front axle, so we have to be very careful to make sure that it is natural that when we regen on the front axle and combine friction braking we have friction braking on the rear. that you know together it's harmonious, it's understood that it's um and reacting to what the driver orders is the great news because electric motors again are torque machines, uh, as soon as you touch the pedal, we're very responsive, we can give you regeneration. correctly. away even when the brakes are preparing to generate power and pressure, yes, I guess I should add to what I just said, it gives you that extra actuator to use, although it does create a problem of more complex controls because the hydraulic system is all. connected to each other, but the electronic motor E is separate, so if you do nothing, you will have a U-brake balancevery lean forward, so it's very important to coordinate that and especially when breaking the drill or turning a corner.
We're actively doing that to manage what's the right level of region that we want to give to charge our battery, but without messing up the balance of the brakes, that's always an ongoing thing, we've fine-tuned it and worked to find what it is. the right balance between the two and um we also have beyond that, like an algorithm that analyzes the stability of the wheels, so if you put the vehicle in ABS, the front axle goes into ABS, uh, it will pull friction first. . Brakes, still try to see. The reason we do this is because we get to interact and meet the people who are actually doing the work on the back end that you never see because it's all wrapped up in marketing in 10 layers of specs and all this and deep down there are some guys. As a man, I spent seven years of my life trying to make this feel like a normal car and job. They are the people who are really making this happen, so it's important for us to include them and talk about the work they did. To gain momentum, it's essentially combining the best of what electric cars can do, giving you that constant pull and torque with the old traditional method of internal combustion. Think about if you had a manual transmission, the biggest time waster is between the shift and the clutch. shifting and imagine if you took it off and the car was still going

while you were shifting, that's what it's doing and you'd think it wouldn't feel natural, but it's very, very well calibrated to the point where it's like, oh, me. I wish I had this on all cars, yes it is incredibly impressive, the fine print of e-motors is of course the faster you go the less efficient they are, at a certain point and in the case of this car, 150M hour, which is a At a higher speed than you will ever see on most tracks and any public American Road, the electric motor is decoupled by a clutch, so it is no longer added as a propulsion aid; however, if you start going less than 150M per hour, go back to running smoothly and add back the front end traction to this car now, on paper this seems very simple and sometimes it is actually the best way to design a system like this without complicating it too much.
One of the big concerns with electrification is that it takes away a lot of the connectivity or driver feel that's not what they're trying to do here now, since this generation of the Corvette has isolated you quite a bit, it's supposed to be that GT car. , that car that can do everything, so adding this electric motor doesn't really take away because the highlight is still the V8, the highlight is the V8, so this is supposed to just add to the whole experience and has done, but there are sacrifices and you mentioned that weight is one of them.
The other thing is you still have to cool a battery and you still have to cool the electric motor, there's still that system and that loop, so how did they deal with that? So the reality is that you have to keep all of this cool and the truth is that people don't realize that keeping battery packs and electric motors cool. Cooling is very difficult, most batteries have a very small thermal window and then they run away thermally where you can't cool them anymore, you have to go off track, allow the system to cool like we had to do with Lucid.
Air Sapphire this doesn't have that problem, they have an oil cooler in the front for the electric motor and then they have a water call solution for the battery. The battery is incredibly small, it's an LG chem pouch style and they have 50%. covered with a cooling plate, so when they did a 24 hour test at the Milford track, this car never had a thermal problem, it was always within the thermal window it needed to operate effectively, although the fine print That's because the battery pack is small. you can reach a state of speed, you will never reach that state of speed on the street because you are always applying the brakes, but on the track, during extreme commands, you are asking the electric motor on very, very long straights, constantly on the throttle. can reduce the power of the engine, the engine does not shut down when the battery reaches a zero state, but it does not produce all the horsepower available and when you reach that point where the battery has nothing left to give you, it still there is a large buffer and that buffer exists to feed the E all-wheel drive system for traction and stability.
It is a stability system only and no longer helps you propel until regeneration recovers the battery to an adequate level to return propulsion again. It's a GT car, there are sacrifices, as we talk about every electric car of this generation, each system they had to choose between cooling and they had to choose between the size that they had to work with with the existing technology and the mass, so this is the solution and on the street it is really impeccable, for the most part we have not had it on the track, but I suppose it would still be very interesting there too.
Yes, the thing to keep in mind about this car is that it is a tram, yes. Track performance and capacity have been increased. They claim it has similar, not the same, lap times as a normal Z6, not a z7 car, but because the Z6 existed this car could become less extreme. It's like Porsche's philosophy, why they have all these different trim levels. This trim level exists to satisfy Street buyers, the ZO6, because they knew this car existed, they didn't need to be so committed to just being a smooth, fun GT car, it makes sense, so Mark, having said all that, I think that it's time for us to drive this. vehicle and see how it lives on the street, okay, Jack, oh boy, that's right, Mark, I mean, there's an appropriate amount of acceleration.
What's going on here? Jack, why does it sound like we're in a jet engine? Well, Mark. this is r-ray, we've bored everyone with all the technical information, now it's time to talk about how this thing drives and naturally it's starting to drizzle so let's exploit the E all-wheel drive to the max. To our ability, the way this thing launches is unlike almost any other car we've driven, not so much in the speed but in the way you feel the electric motor in the front pushing you forward between gears. Off the line, there's a tremendous sense of torque.
That makes it unique compared to something like the NSX, where the front electric motors don't really do much in the way of forward propulsion. Yes, it's a unique and different experience from the worn Corvette and I think that's what most people will ask us well if you take a standard Stingray with just a V8. People love its sound, but it lacks the speed of the Z06. The electric motor here essentially plays the role of a supercharger, just like you do. Getting the extra power at the front to give you acceleration, if not more than that of the Z06, you have the torque of the electric car pulling you and the best thing about this is that you have the same traditional dual-clutch transmission as the one that shifts the electric.
The motor keeps pulling you so you don't have that dip and power those little dips that you get from those shifts. The car keeps going and it's such a strange feeling that it combines the special features of an electric car, just a little bit of that electric car feeling with the old school feeling of the engine and transmission and that's what makes it quite fun and it's not even new. At first I thought it was a trick, you'll get over it. but it really feels fast all the time and since you're about to get back into a straightaway where we can hit this a little bit on the street, you want to give me a noise mark.
I usually don't like fake engine noise. cars, but because you have that heavy fourth order from the lt2, the 6.2L and that engine is normally a little flat when it comes to the higher frequencies, I actually like the way the E engine fills out some of that sound like Sy synthesis at the top. and it's well calibrated when you step on the accelerator. I think most people who get into this will really appreciate the sound and I'm one again. I'm the one who complains the most about fake synth noise, um, because I feel like it takes away From experience, it's just a distraction and I'm not going to say it's not a distraction, the sound because when you're in the higher driving modes, As you told me, it gets stronger and I think because of the tone they chose. to complete the engine soundelectric, that high tone is very well blended, it's a nice sound, but I admit the novelty wears off pretty quickly, but luckily it's only there when you're going full speed. so it builds harmonically, it builds as the speed increases, so if you're below 40 or 50, whatever, you don't hear it as much until you get to 90 100 and then it drives that driving force of sound which is unique.
I still say there is a fake engine noise here too, much like the Z06, and for me I wish there was a way to disable it completely. I know they incorporate it. You know it's part of their strategy, but you know. for someone who doesn't want it, it's all software, you should be able to disable it. I think the last thing I'm going to talk about is the dve train before I get into the driving parts of this car. I had some complaints on the regular C8. animiz Z6 and the way the dual clutch feels lacks some of the imperceptibility of the pdk, meaning you feel it when it shifts, it's not the most transparent thing in the world because the electric motor is filling up and that torque decreases by reality. ends up smoothing out some of the oddities of this gearbox 100%.
I was going to say the same thing where there was some clumsiness before in the previous car, that's why I said it literally has the best of EV hybridization, even though this is not really a hybrid, it has the best of that feeling with the internal combustion feeling of old school and I know a lot of people complained that the Z06 sounded too exotic, it didn't have that raw V8 like the old school Muscle Car, so now. You have that and you have that electric propulsion and the smoothness that the electric motor brings when combined with the double clutch.
For me I expected this to be a total and gimmicky disaster. I really thought about it. I thought it was going to be a total failure. I had low expectations I had very low expectations we came out of the NSX, which is the closest thing to this, but there are similarities and that car had some serious deficiencies that this detects in Sole and in the heart. There's a lot of soul in driving this car, so Mark, let's talk suspension and handling. I know we're not on the track, but to be fair, this is a street car, we're even in all seasons.
Have you ever had a problem with traction? In this car as always, even in All Seasons, we have had no problems letting this thing go as ridiculously as losing control, even in a straight line you would expect there to be a lot of wheel spin with the amount of power we have. These things put you on the ground and of course we're a little slippery here, but you still don't have the confidence to literally put your foot on the ground. I imagine this car on a back road, a very narrow mountain road, which wouldn't exist in Illinois, you would probably be faster than a normal Stingray and a Z06 because of the traction out of corners and the ability to reduce all the power all the time so that as we go into the few corners that exist around here, it's a very interesting car in the corners, so tell me about it.
You know, when you come in, you brake hard and you know you're taking manual control and you're trying to get out of the corner. So what I think is interesting about this. The car is at the entrance of the curve and in the middle of the curve. The car is essentially rear-wheel drive. The electric motor does not interact much with the transmission. It's basically off and allows you to turn the car like a normal Stingray or a Z06. You can balance as the car accelerates and then as you come out of the corner, as you're trying to straighten the vehicle, the electric motor kicks in and helps you get out of the corner where you're not dealing with a giant moment of oversteer. or as I've been able to do on some of the on-ramps around here, have the tail swing out on this car, the electric motor pushes you through the drift, so it feels a little bit.
I don't want to call it completely inorganic, but it feels a little interesting and yes, you are correcting for oversteer in a way that you normally wouldn't in either a traditional all-wheel drive car or a rear-drive car, but it is very, very effective and it gives you this high sense of confidence in this car and you combine that with again the fact that yes, while it's a little bit stiffer than a z51 stingray, it's still a very compliant car, particularly because of the high performance compared to a Z6 equipped with z7 at least. For my butt, it's 25-30% less harsh, the driving frequency is substantially lower, which makes this car a lot easier to live with and there's a couple more things to talk about, you know, because you have EO all-wheel drive. and you have the flexibility to do what they're trying to do electronically with this car, it's incredibly fast but gives you the confidence to go out in the wet, something a lot of Corvette drivers are never going to do. in wet, rainy or snowy conditions, to be fair you probably won't go out in the snow but you could and the systems are calibrated to do so and what I really like about the way they have combined this and this is a blessing and a curse for the Z06, but less so here because it has to be something for everyone, it has to be a touring machine, it has to be a speed demon and it can, it has to go to the track, which I really like about that it's the The flexibility that they've given you to go soft like now I'm on the touring and the touring not only softens the suspension but it will put it on cylinder deactivation and close off the exhaust essentially where you can't even. you hear the engine, you don't hear the engine noise, you don't hear the exhaust, they rely a little more on the electric motor in the front to propel you and it's a quiet car, it becomes a GT car, which is really nice when you're stuck in traffic and I drove this and kept it on track mode a lot because I wanted to listen to it, but after a while I got annoyed, honestly, I got annoyed and put it on.
It turns and it was fine, now I'm in a quiet car, I don't feel the bumps in the road, I can really tune out the rest of the world and that's something this car does better than most, it has that split personality which is great. and the other part is the starting part of the electric vehicle, which we didn't really talk about, it's such a subtle thing but it makes a big difference when starting it in the morning, like you can put it in stealth mode where you just pull out of your driveway . and e o at night and if you're trying to sneak away from seeing your 50 year old lover, you know you don't want to alert the family you put him in, roll in the driveway, they don't even do it.
I know you're gone, they say, oh baby, what were you doing? I say, oh, I was working so hard upstairs, baby. Sorry, I burned until midnight, so there is that effective flexibility of this car that they really thought about. a lot of this and that's what makes having the electric motor in the front more than just a party trick, I think to the point of the final engineers and this is a blessing or a curse depending on how you feel about it. drive. This is one of the first high performance Corvettes they have developed, which is still very easy to drive and traditionally there are minimal compromises, like when they made the Z6 or the ZR1, by increasing the performance bandwidth it became a car less habitable.
This is not the case with Well, Yes, Jack. I mean, when you told me about this, like every Corvette you talk to me about every day, I really wondered why we're doing this again and I think they've reinvented the genre at an affordable sports car price like I do. I know over 100,000 is a lot of money, but what they're offering here for that price is hands down one of the best things they've ever done.
