best

free

camping

sites in the US, these sites can accommodate anything from band tents to huge platforms and, well, they're located all over the country, so before we dive into this list, it has 20 places, but we are. We'll go through the information pretty quickly to keep the pace fast, so if at any point you want to reference these 20 points, you can click on the article in the link or in the comments section which will follow point by point as we work.
20 best free camping spots in usa
Our way to number one on the list and you can bookmark it for the future if you want to visit these campgrounds at some point later without further ado, let's jump to number 20 and move up to number one, reaching number 20. Visitor Center of Natchez in Natchez Mississippi. This is an unlikely place to make the list because at the end of the day it's the visitor center parking lot and that doesn't sound like the most attractive thing in the world, but rest assured, it's a beautiful place. The campground is located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.

More Interesting Facts About,

20 best free camping spots in usa...

You have the Natchez Visitor Center right there, but best of all, they provide free water and electricity for anyone

camping

at the Visitor Center. You can stay there, I think, two or three nights, and you can also access the south part or the south entrance of the Natchez Trace right there from the visitor center, so if you want to do the Natchez Trace, whether you start or end at Natchez is a great place to camp for a few days. You can camp here, it's a big old parking lot. The only thing I would warn people about is that a lot of the places are bumpy so you will have to keep sleeping even that night or you can leave a few blocks but some of the sites are quite bumpy but overall they are lovely beautiful and free for camping, walking distance to the center of town, and well, free water and electricity, it doesn't get any better, let's jump to number 19, entering number 19, it's the naval observation highway and this is in Flagstaff.
20 best free camping spots in usa
Arizona, one of the reasons we love Flagstaff is because it's just north of Sedona, but not only is it north, it's at a higher elevation, so once you have those hot days in Sedona, you can really Retire to Flagstaff and camp at these stunning wooded campsites free of naval observation. The highway is probably seven miles from downtown Flagstaff, tons of shops and restaurants, stuff like that, but it's also far enough away that you can have a lot of privacy in this wooded campground. We saw rigs of all sizes when we camped here, definitely fifth wheels and RVs, but the smaller your rig, the more hidden you can be in a private place, but you know that either way, no matter the size of your rig, you should be able to camp here.
20 best free camping spots in usa
My only warning for this campground is that if you stay to the right you are going to go up to the Naval Observatory where there are a lot of signs saying that regular vehicles are not allowed there and if you continue you will come to a gate that is a little difficult to access . turn around so focus on those signs and don't go up highway number 18 on our list today is the Blakenship Bridge, this is right outside of Glacier National Park. Honestly, I would have put this place in the top five at least, but it can only fit on small rigs, so if you have even a C-Class, I would be very hesitant to take it there again because the road is very bumpy and with everything That said, it can be a challenge.
It's beautiful, beautiful, camping on the waterfront right on this rocky river bed. You really can't ask for a nicer free campground so close to Glacier National Park now if you want to get in the water like Olivia did, it's going to be really cold, some people go in there and swim. I could barely get my toes in there. because the water was very cold, but there are tubercles, beams and fissures involved in water activities there, so bring your fishing rod, you might be able to have dinner too. At number 17 on our list is Lake Elk City Park.
It is on Route 66 in Elk City Oklahoma, one of the reasons we love this park is because it is very easy to access from the interstate which makes it a great place to spend the night, but the park is located in a lake with golf courses with restrooms, pavilions and picnic. outdoor tables and grills and best of all, they also provide free water and electricity. You can't go wrong, it's not often that you have free electricity and water and a beautiful campground right off the interstate so it's easy to access rigs of all sizes. I'm not entirely sure how level it would be on a larger platform, but in our experience we've camped there at least three times, each time it's been very easy to get situated and hook up to that power.
Number 16 on our list is American. My girl this is right outside of Yuma Arizona but it's actually just over the border in California located in Winter Haven there isn't much to this campground but that's the beautiful thing because it's open in the desert from Southern California, where you can bring so many friends. Gather around the campfire and enjoy a great camping experience with friends. There is an interstate rest stop right near the American Girl Mine where you can fill up water and dump your trash, but other than that, amenities are sparse, but in addition, the cellular internet is blazing fast, so it's a great place where you can distribute big platforms to access it and you can have fast access to the Internet, so we've camped on American Girl Mind for the last four winners, they love it and hey, they can.
Don't wait to come back, number fifteen on the list is Blackwell Horse Camp, south of Bloomington, Indiana. Any free camping east of the Mississippi River is a very valuable commodity, but it is not as easy to obtain as in the west. We really liked Blackwell. horse camp because it's a huge lush grass field with kind of a figure eight trail running through it so there's a lot of camping options and they have two central bathrooms there and if you have horses, I mean that's what it's for In fact, it is encouraging. horse campers to get out and take their horses to the trail, all sizes of rigs can fit here, they make this place very accessible because they expect you to take your big horse trailer there and if you want to go out for the day you can go . up to Bloomington for lunch, they have a nice historic downtown area we definitely explored there for about a day and had a good time in Blackwell again, it was while we were working from Alabama to Michigan and it was great to find a free campground.
Very beautiful and River, our dog really enjoyed it. Alright guys, next on the list is Savoia Mesa. It is just north of Taos, New Mexico. This is another place that would be in my personal top five, but didn't make it. is high on this list because it is difficult to access if you are on a big rig, this is great for small travel trailers, maybe even a risky Class C driver wouldn't be able to make the trip, but there are a lot of low branches and type of hairpin turns as you get to the campground, which is up a long dirt road beforehand, but it's the reward of the campground that makes it such an incredible place that you're on a cliff overlooking the Rio Grande Gorge and can walk up to the bottom.
Olivia and I did it, we almost died, we definitely wouldn't recommend it if you're not up for a long hike because the elevation change is huge, you're hiking through the canyon to the Rio Grande, it's a challenging hike but well worth it and Overall the campground is just gorgeous and is a great place to camp for free near Taos without having to be in the hustle and bustle of Taos. Another great thing is that we had wonderful cellular internet in this place, which seems to make no sense because it's in the middle of nowhere, it seems like once you go down that dirt road and you're sitting on that cliff you feel like you have everything the place for you, but hey, at the same time you are working with fast 4G LTE Internet, the best of both worlds at Subaru Mesa, highly recommended by us.
Next up is Oliver Reservoir in Nebraska. Nebraska is not one of our favorite states when we think about travel destinations, but this campground is really beautiful, it is located on a nice man-made body of water, but the best thing is that no one comes to this campground, so you can camp by the lake and have it all to yourself. When we were there, there were probably four other campers, but the park is huge if you're in Nebraska and If you want something scenic, definitely check out Oliver Reservoir because it's so much more than just corn fields.
The downside is that there is a train track near the campground and the train track runs at all hours of the day and night, that kind of thing doesn't necessarily keep us awake, but if you're sensitive to sound you might want to consider it first. of not being able to decapitate an entire reservoir, but otherwise it's a hidden gem in Nebraska with a waterfront campground, so it's a big win for us next. It's number 12 and this is Padre Island National Seashore, it's what they call North Beach, located right before the Padre Island visitor center and it's free to camp on the beach, rigs of all sizes can camp there, but the thing is You have to be brave enough to drive on sand and you have to constantly watch the tide, the tide will change daily and if you camp too close to the water the tide will wash away your RV.
We were intimidated to learn about this before camping there, but once we camped there. If you know, we felt pretty safe about the tide movements, we arrived during high tide to get an idea of what the high marker will be and then we just parked from there and it was a great beachfront campsite, one thing more you are going to do. What I want to keep in mind is that this is a beachfront campground across from the golf course, which means a lot of salt water will explode into your RV or tow vehicle. Whatever you bring there will be covered in salt water.
There are many trucks. and car washes right outside the area so you can spray them, but I have to admit that our trailer and truck are never the same after camping there. I wouldn't say they were super rusty, but there were rough

spots

that definitely never went away after that, so you have to keep that in mind. If the price you pay for camping on the beach we did it once and loved it, we probably won't go there again, but it was one of the most memorable campsites we've stayed at. Next up is number 11 and it is Cherry Creek Road outside of Durango Colorado.
This campground is west of Durango, but makes for a good basecamp if you want to be in the area and there aren't many free campgrounds nearby. The heart of Durango, actually, this is probably one of the closest, so if you want to go to Durango and camp for free, Cherry Creek is probably your best option. We have seen fifth wheels here and C Class and towed our ride. trailer there, but I don't know if a class that can fit in this place, not because it's not big enough, but because the entrance is a little steep and it's rocky, so if you don't have the free space or if it's just rained specifically , it will be quite difficult to access due to the steep entrance.
You'll keep that in mind, maybe scout it ahead of time, but like I said, you won't find a free campsite closer to Durango, it's a good spot and it's just a little difficult to access for the bigger rigs, so keep that in mind , check it out, although we love Durango, it's probably our favorite city in America and this is one of our favorite free campgrounds every time we go there. Alright guys, first half of the list. It's low now we're getting into the good stuff. I'm trying to get a little exercise in here while I do this, but man, it's already hot, we're here in Alabama in September, almost October, they say it's fall, but I'm convinced it's still summer, let's move on to number ten, number ten listed is a steep wash and this is in Lake Havasu, Arizona.
Lake Havasu is an attractive location for our viewers in the winter and there are definitely plenty of free camping

spots

in the rugged area. However, observing is our favorite spot of all the places for several reasons: it's a beautiful view and has nice land formations around it and you can walk right from your site and explore the area, but it's also close to all the shops in the area. north end of town, that means you'll be close to Walmart Home Depot, an outlet mall, so it gives you a good central location if you're in Lake Havasu because if you're campingat Lake Havasu your intention probably isn't to be in the middle of nowhere but it's more about being in the community, there are a lot of our beers in the area, we're not really trying to get out in nature escape2 when we camp and in Lake Havasu we are really trying to be part of that RV community that is there camping and rugged is great we saw all sizes of rigs there but once it fills up in the winter it will be a challenge to get a Class A or a fifth wheel there just because You will have a path to explore a place and then you will have to maneuver to that place and it could be quite complicated, but if you are on a larger platform and it is during the best time. camping season I would just say explore it.
The first number 9 on our list is Lake Hattie, which is in Lake Hattie Wyoming, but is just outside of Laramie. Laramie is one of the largest college towns in Wyoming. There are many great places to camp in Laramie. but Hattie Lake is by far the most picturesque, most fun, and most peaceful. One of our all-time favorite camps. Any size rig can camp at Hattie Lake, but if you have a small rig, you can camp on the beach at some of the best campgrounds that's what we loved. It was very relaxing. We had the water right next to the front door.
We set up our chairs on the beach. The dogs are playing in the water. Perfect perfect location and camp. One of my best memories to look back on and be excited to go. again, number eight on our list is from one of our other favorite towns in Colorado and that is Pagosa Springs Jackson Mountain Highway where the free campground is located and is probably just five miles from downtown Pagosa Springs Inn in Pagosa Springs, are the deepest. national hot springs in the world, not just in the US, so there are great hot springs to bathe in there, but the camp itself is in a beautiful forested San Juan National Forest.
The advantage is that most platforms can fit in the first spot, which is pretty easy to spot, but the disadvantage is that there are only a few spots there if you are on a large platform and if you don't make it to that first spot, It will be quite difficult to find another place that can accommodate you if you are lucky enough to get that first place. You'll be located in the wooded campground, have fast, fast Internet access, and can drive to downtown Pagosa Springs in just a few minutes, making this a highly recommended site from us.
We love Colorado, we love Pagosa Springs and Jackson Mountain Road. It has been one of our favorite free campgrounds we have been to during our four years of RV living. Next up is number 7 and this is North Creek just outside of Zion National Park. Setting up camp at North Creek just outside of Zion was one of the best. experiences, all sizes of rigs can fit here, but let me tell you, it's great for tented pickups because it gets very crowded there during peak season, so the pickups and tanners fill the place up pretty quickly, we were able to navigate easily for our 16 feet. tow there at one spot and there was even a big fifth wheel near us that got a spot pretty easily but beyond that you're really good you want to explore it if it's not so crowded when you get there it definitely fits a wide variety, but if you have many smaller platforms spread out, it will eat up those big spots.
It's just a few miles from the entrance to Zion National Park, although the campground, the free campground, is busy, it pales in comparison to how busy camping is inside Zion. In the National Park we have done both and really enjoyed both, but every time we return we will go to North Creek from now on. Alright guys, I'm starting to sweat here, it's still early in the morning and I can't believe how hot it is, but the list goes on. Next is number 6 and that is the sacred mountain of white shells. It's just outside Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, the Great Sand Dunes.
I heard some incredible training and it's true. in the middle of the Colorado plain, which is strange, these dunes are just beautiful white sand and they extend for hundreds and hundreds of acres, so in itself it's beautiful, if you want to camp at the national park campground, It's a good place I've camped there and it stays pretty busy, but if you're looking for a free camping spot outside of the National Park, Sacred Mountain Concha Blanca is by far our favorite option, there's not a lot of traffic there, it's at end of a long dirt road of any size.
The platform is accessible and puts you at the foot of a beautiful mountain, so the scenery is incredible too. I would scout it ahead of time if you are on a larger rig because you never know if spots will be open for large rigs, but if you are on a smaller rig, even a Class C, you should be able to find a spot pretty easily and besides being next to the big sand dunes, camping for free and having a great internet connection, it's also an alien hotspot, from what we hear. If you like UFO sightings, I think it's the San Juan Valley, this is an amazing place to observe extraterrestrial life.
Number five on the list is the Snake River. This is a beautiful free campground located right between Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park. He is friendly. like one of those two for Tuesday, you have access to both national parks and you can camp for free. This free campground of all the ones on the list has the most pristine vault toilets. These vault toilets are better than so many flush toilet rooms we have. I have supported the National Park Service for keeping these things beautiful, the way the campgrounds are set up is there are probably five different entrances on the road and at each entrance there is a place for one or two RVs or campers or tents and each of those five different exits have their own vaulted bathrooms.
Oh, amazing bathroom amenities. I know it's not important to everyone, but seriously, having clean bathrooms next to your tent, RV, or van is a huge plus overall if you're visiting Grand Teton and Yellowstone. National Park, this is one of our favorite places, so check it out to make sure you get number four on the list. It's probably one of the most epic places we've ever stayed at and there's no human sight in Buffalo Gap, South Dakota aka a mile from the entrance to Badlands National Park has an amazing location, it also puts you in the bluff that overlooks thousands of acres of the Badlands and is so beautiful that one of our favorite things while camping here was watching the thunderstorms roll in from 50 miles away. just watching them come and it's actually an absolutely beautiful sight to see when you're camping in the middle of nowhere in the Badlands.
The site can't accommodate most size rigs, but our friends, the getaway couple, just tried to do it. stay there in their fifth wheel, they were after a new storm and they actually got stuck, so you have to know your equipment, you have to know the road conditions and then decide if you are going to try it or not because it is definitely off-road, but With all that said, we have seen the A Class there, we have seen fifth wheels there and we were able to easily access them in our trailer and truck every time we went nomadic.
View on the Buffalo Gap grasslands, one of our favorites. free campsites of all time number three on the list we're getting to the good stuff this is main street five to five in sedona arizona here are the good things about the site rigs of all sizes can find a spot there if there's room for it find, so we've seen RVs, fifth wheel vans, tents, we've seen them all. It puts it so close to Sedona, where you can obviously hike, you can shop, eat, so many things to do in Sedona, one of our favorite cities to camp and visit, and if you know Sedona, it can be expensive, so getting a free campground is a big plus, it also puts you close to Cottonwood and the ghost town of Jerome Arizona, multiple things you can do there on different days your schedule can definitely be full if that's what you're looking for now.
The bad thing about this road or this campground is that the road is fenced, not bad because if you find a view within a mile or three it is definitely doable, the road continues. for a long time, you can go ten miles and find a place, but I don't like driving on wash roads for that long, so the place we found was two miles from entry number two on the list, it's a famous ideal place for free camping in Texas, you might be able to guess it before you say it, but it's Magnolia Beach, a beautiful beachfront campground that's much less intense than Padre Island.
We loved Magnolia Beach. They have bathrooms on site. They have picnic tables. They have pavilions, but the best part. In our opinion, the tide does not fluctuate as much as at the Gulf front campgrounds. This beach is actually in a bay that leads to the Gulf, so it's much more relaxed. Our dogs loved playing in the water. All about Magnolia Beach. It was very nice. All platform sizes can easily fit on Magnolia Beach. I don't think there is any obstruction that would prevent a large RV or 5th wheel from camping there. We saw a lot of them.
It is a flat beach. It is a hard beach. You don't really have to worry too much about sinking into the sand, but definitely know your gear and measure it yourself. The downside is that although it is a popular place, there will definitely be other campers there, this is more like staying at a campground because Plus, it's not in the middle of nowhere, you don't have the place to yourself, you share it with other campers In our experience, they have been completely respectable and very courteous, no one was making loud noises or anything, or running. generators overnight so our experience was great at Magnolia Beach if you're passing through Texas and want a beautiful free beachfront campground check it out guys we've made it to the number one spot.
I think I lost a pound while walking around here. Maybe I should have done it standing still, but hey, it's early in the morning and I wanted to get some exercise, so don't hold it against me. I know some people don't like these walking videos, but I just have a gimbal, so it helps with stability. I guess let me know if you've noticed the gimbal, uh, number one favorite free camp of all time for us personally, but also in our minds because it's so accessible for rigs of all sizes and that's the wedge-shaped lookout on Utah, this is north of Moab, it's what they call the little Grand Canyon.
We were able to park right on the edge of the canyon and be impressed with the beautiful views and complete lack of campers near us. There were probably five others. There are campers there but the Pampa area is so big, you can spread out and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Olivia really pushed us to go here because she was struggling to find a free campsite in the area we were traveling through during the time. and every time I've opened this site to investigate, I've been rejected because it says 20 miles of dirt road before accessing the campground, which immediately makes me think I'll go see if there's anything else out there, but Olivia thought we should try it and I'm so glad because that dirt road was better than some interstates we've been on, it's better than just a nice dirt road and I guess they keep it greased so the dust doesn't fly and there was no problem towing or driving down that road there wasn't a stretch of road covered in water it was amazing so great props for the road you drive even though it's dirt you'll find it's better than most.
Paved roads once you get to the campground, there are many different sites you can choose from and the main campground area may not be conducive to huge rigs, there are camping areas just outside though that can accommodate larger rigs camping , but I would say in Class C we could easily find a campsite in the main camping area overlooking the canyon. There is a bathroom on site. Despite being 20 miles down a dirt road, the excellent internet access for everything related to the wedge lookout was amazing, so it's ours. The most recommended free campground we can recommend and if you ever move to Moab or are going to leave Moab and head north be sure to check it out it will definitely be a great experience and remember everything we said in this video is in the article which we wrote so that you can refer to it in the future without having to scroll through this video and the article also has links to the sites.
Now I'm going to cool off in the airconditioning and I will see them at the California RV show. next week there will be lots of fun stuff thanks for taking this morning walk with me let me know what you think about this gimbal let me know if you think it worked or not and tell us your favorite free camping spot in the comments below. See you next time
