race

on a 2.428 mile circuit, a very historic and famous circuit, and we will be live this Sunday in the afternoon. of course today you watched the hungary formula one

race

here on espn and now an afternoon of winston cup

nascar

stock car racing back in 1957 buck baker was the winner of a

nascar

race and a chevy here on

watkins

glen

n In 1964 Billy Wade was wanted in Mercury and the most recent Nascar race was in 1965 and Marvin Pench was the winner of that race in a Ford.

He is here today as an honorary starter for the event, so there is no real historical background when it comes to Nascar stock car racing. but of course, many types of cars have been raced at this track, including Rick's Indy cars that you've raced in. Yes we did it. You know, this is a great track for any car. He's been good to us. We had some good results here. and it's a fun track to run on so maybe one day we can bring them back here, hopefully there are seven turns that we'll take care of today, they're running the shorter course, now there's a bigger course.

More Interesting Facts About,

1986 budweiser at the glen from watkins glen nascar classic race replay...

It is used sometimes but they cut a part out to run the Nascar cars and there are seven corners that we will deal with, five of them are right and only two are left, as you can see the drivers are being tied to their cars at this time, Nascar officials are ready to receive the order to start the engines, then we will have a couple of warm-up laps before we get the green flag for this 90-lap event, not one of the longest races. the winston cup circuit for this year, but it's certainly enough, i think because of all the preparation that's been done so far in practice and qualifying, frankly the teams just don't know what to expect as far as gears go and brakes.
1986 budweiser at the glen from watkins glen nascar classic race replay
And those are two things we'll certainly be keeping an eye on during this race today. Well, let's go to the pit area with Jackaroot, who is with Buddy Baker, he is not a driver in today's event. Normally, Bob the Crisco Racing special driver, when he hears the order that was just given to you gentlemen, start your engines, would say a little prayer to himself, fasten your seat belts and be ready to go, but Buddy Baker he's not behind the wheel of the car, we'll hear more about that later. Today's crew chief mate, your feelings, well Jackie, I just wish you all the luck in the world and Chris Kokari is an extremely nice guy to work with and we put a guy in the car that we think can win the race and That is what it is.
1986 budweiser at the glen from watkins glen nascar classic race replay
It's all about yes, but now mate, you're a pretty intense individual, this guy is really serious about his racing, how intense are you going to be as a crew chief? Do you think you'll be that bad of a pilot? the intensity or a little bit better, let me tell you this, we have done everything we can to prepare a car and make it very comfortable, and you know what kind of driver he is, he is the best on the road course, so if we have I have the car so that he wins the race. I feel like Chris Coach will be at the forefront.
Well, we'll see a lot of his activity because he's the camera in the car. Back to Bob and Rick and the field begins. to get away now there goes allen's or jeff beaudine senior on the right along with dale earhardt richard petty on the left the whole field starts moving now and it's going to take, like I said, two laps of pace before we get the green flag, they're leaving the start line area and go down a little bit straight to turn one and Rick you've driven this course so maybe you can tell us what this course is really like okay this turn one is going to be an exciting course in the beginning of the race, you know, you come into that corner pretty hard, a lot of cars running close by, you go in there in third gear, you know some cars, four, depending on the gear, you'll downshift, uh, downshift to second gear.
This corner gets quite hard in the middle, the car tends to loosen up a little bit on the exit, you know, as you go up, sometimes you use the bumps a little bit on the outside, but as little as possible and then you go down. In turn two, which is a fast right turn, you protect the turn in probably third and fourth, depending on the gears, and it's a very fast right turn where you hold the car a little tight to prepare for the left and tends to take the curve. The car is a little bit loose and then as you start going up the hill coming out of turn two, you start to get a little bit closer, you know, you go into turn three, which is a very fast left hander.
The road is a little narrow, there are the guardrails. on both sides and as you go over the bridge it tends to make the car a little light and that can make your heart race, sometimes this is the area of the track we refer to as the s in this corner two, three and four and at this moment they are between turns three and four. You see the pace car leading the field as you exit turn three into turn four. It's kind of a right sweeper that leads to the backstretch. It is a very long straight line. very fast, I think they are running at about 170 miles per hour, if I'm right, yes, they will transmit information to us about the speed of the trap.
We have someone in that area of the racetrack with a radar gun, but as you indicated to rick they were running 170 miles and I think 169 was actually the fastest bill elliot turned right before he crashed and most of the other trap speeds have been in the 162-165 or six miles per hour category now they're down the stretch here and it's going to be interesting because, especially on that first lap, everyone's going to want to try to put as much distance between him and him as possible. the next one and I imagine they'll be standing on the accelerator, okay? you're going to turn further away, shows that's where Billy Elliot had the problem with him.
You brake and enter the turn and the car continues to light up as you go up the hill, okay this goes into turn six, now you can see the cars racing. and it's uh, it's a pretty good left turn, you downshift, probably in third gear, uh, it's pretty much the same, a lot of guys use the sidewalk a little bit on the left side so the left front light comes on. , you know, kick the back of the car around a little bit and you know, help turn the car for the exit of the corner, then they'll go into turn seven, which is a little bit tighter corner, you'll downshift probably. in second gear to exit. out of that turn and out of turn number seven and past our broadcast position here on the main straight, they complete a fast lap and next time they should be able to get the green flag ready, the

He did extensive testing on this car and placed it on the outside of row number two, but right now he is running in second position, right behind him is our pulse keeper, Tim Richmond. Tim pulls this off the right side of the car off the track, just a little kicking up some dust and that puts a little race track between him and Wallace. Here comes the completion of lap number one. It's Daryl Waltrip, followed by Rusty Wallace and then Ricky. rudd has moved into third position followed by harry gant and tim richmond is definitely backing off and crashing.
I think he just took a wheel off there and it takes him a while to get it back up, but he's back on the field and running, but rudd made a nice inside move on the start, that's what got him to the finish. third position. Ricky Rudd started the race from 7th place and is in 3rd place at the moment, there seems to be a little smoke or something coming from the rear. End of Rusty Wallace's car. I've noticed a couple of times right now I don't know what it is but it's not affecting the car at all.
He's right behind our leader and there's Alan or the older one who's right behind Tim. richmond, it's uh richmond in sixth and uh the senior in seventh position. It looked like Rusty's car might have had a little fuel overflow in that left corner coming out of the right rear corner, which was probably causing that. Senior negotiating this race track here at Watkins Glen, behind Tim Richmond, we understand that Tim Richmond's car has failed, the engine is failing. Our spotters around the circuit have informed us of that, so we'll keep an eye on Tim Richmond's car, he's crashed here. at the beginning of the race two laps were completed he is still rusty wallace behind the leader daryl waltrip that's how close they are and you can see the slight gap between second and third position while wallace leads third place ricky rudd didn't notice any of that liquid or smoke or whatever was coming out of Wallace's car, so apparently everything's fine, there's a little bit of tire smoke there, but again apparently it's not affecting the handling or performance of that car at all.
These two are taking off and leaving the rest of the field. We came down the back stretch at speeds approaching 165 miles per hour here the trap speed on that last lap was 160.7 Rusty is blocking the right front there entering the turn. It's a tough spot to get in there still right behind our leader Daryl Waltrip. We're on lap three of this 90 lap race, let's get down as our spotters have confirmed that Tim Richmond's car is failing, but it's only within a certain rev range. I talked to Harry Hyde and he told me that he only goes upabout 6 000.
So when he goes up through the gearbox it hits 6000, it fails when he goes up higher than that, it goes away, they're not quite sure what the problem is, but now we see that there's another blown engine in the route, gentlemen, and we cannot determine it. who it is at this time, but he has moved the car to the inside of the track and we will try to determine well, it is car number 63, that is the jocko machine jocko majakomo that competes in winston cup events here in the eastern part of the USA. He competes regularly at Pocono and came here this afternoon in that number 63 machine, the Linro Corporation Buick.
And we have a yellow flag on the track and we assume that it is because of that failed engine that the teams will go out to see if the oil fell out or not. on the surface creating a danger for the driver, so the safety car comes out Nascar officials have called for general yellow and there is the number 67 Buddy Arrington machine that is also coming to make a pit stop, they are refueling, but certainly It's a little early for routine pit stops, but Budding makes a quick stop and gets back to racing, so here's a pretty early yellow card, with only three laps completed, the leader of this race is Daryl Waltrip, running in second position is rusty wallace, third is ricky rudd and in fourth place right now is harry again.
I'm back with more live from Watkins Glen New York as uh Parsons Espn comes home, Bobby, the race is under yellow here at Watkins Glen New York due to a blown engine in the number 63 car of the Jocko Bajakamo machine and a little bit of oil liquid outside. the race track, so the crews have been out cleaning it up trying to establish some radio communication here with Bobby Allison Bobby Allison this Bob Jenkins in the ESPN booth Can you hear me? Bobby right now is running in the 11th position, but apparently we're having some communication issues with him on the field and in the single file formation now through the s, the way they're running, we've got Buddy Arrington back in the pits for the second time in a matter of a few minutes here the leader Waltrip second is wallace third is rudd fourth is harry gantt fifth is neil bonnett's sixth position is pole winner tim richmond who dropped back at the start of the race due to apparent engine failure al unser running seventh in eighth position is jeff beaudine ninth is richard petty and tenth is dale earhardt eleventh is bobby allison 12th is benny parsons 13th terry labonte 14th position is joe rudman and 15th right now is kyle petty joe ruttman's number 26 car has probably made the biggest move of the race so far, starting 21st. he was the fastest qualifier of the second day on saturday and moved to 14th position.
Joe Rutman made good progress in the field and we understand that it is raining in the back sections of the race course and that is something we haven't really talked about. There were some blacks. clouds in front of us but we've had black clouds and threatening weather all weekend but it hasn't rained here at the track but apparently it does now and of course that's not good for high speed racing conditions speed. Joe Ruttman races in the 14th position, as the field remains under yellow, there was only about a 40 percent chance of rain listed here this afternoon, but apparently there is some moisture falling on parts of the racetrack , it's not the kind of situation that Indy cars have because uh when it rains, you can live with a little bit of humidity in stock car racing, but the cars are not that practical.
No, I'll tell you over the weekend since we've been here, the rain has been kind of come in and go out, there actually hasn't been a lot of heavy downpours until maybe at the end of the day you can see a little bit of moisture on the windshield. of Lunzer's car, yes, that's definitely enough to make the car a little slippery, yes, certainly. Thus, the course was slowed down due to a failed engine on Giaco Mujakimo's machine and some rain falling on the rear sections of the course. The pace car comes down the main straight here leading race leader Daryl Walter, go talk to Al Unser Senior about the metal prep change.
From indy cars to stock cars you just have to change your way of thinking, right? You still drive an indy car by the seat of your pants, I don't care what they say, you know, they say downforce takes control, but No, if that were the case, why do so many guys crash into them? You know, so it doesn't always work that way, but stock cars are more of a seat of your pants because they don't have their grip. Comments from al unser. who was one of the 12 drivers in the iroc race yesterday, there's buddy baker, the crew chief now on this machine, the senior led for a large portion of that race in iraq yesterday and we'll talk to rick mears about his performance in that race in just a moment, but first of all, let's get to Jackaroo Bob.
You talk about the weather and the rain that falls. Winston Cup teams may have a small benefit that they normally don't need to enjoy. Here in Watkins Glen there is a covered well. area that usually takes up maybe 80 percent of their pits, so they will be able to put the cars into service and if they have to get out of the weather to be able to do it under these, we will also tell them about a problem that may be developing in the car number 27 because of rusty wallace wallace. They feel like they have filled the car too much with oil.
They are beginning to devise a small Rube Goldberg-type team to be able to meet the recovery of that oil. Off the engine before it hits the track, we'll keep you posted. We have noticed some type of fluid coming out of that car. It looked like it was coming from the fuel vent area, but it could very well have been some oil. dripping off that rusty race car wallace even though he got off to a great start and is now in second position he may have a problem with that pontiac aluguard we're still under yellow at

watkins

glen and we'll be right back ok?
I did not hear anything. Bob Jenkins was just trying to talk to you from ESPN. Okay, try it now, but they'll be coming at you in a minute, one more turn around the corner, so with Rick Mears and Jack Root, this is Bob Jenkins. watkins glen international racetrack where the glenn winston cup budweiser race is held and honestly we haven't seen much action so far we ran about three laps under green and then yellow came out due to some oil on the track and because of the rain falling in some parts of this track the leader is Daryl Waltrip in car number 11.
The second position is rusty wallace the third is rick ricky rudd in the fourth is harry gant and the fifth place is neil bonnett We haven't talked much about what I expect when it comes to pit stops, uh Rick, I guess most teams expect two pit stops during this relatively short race, yeah, I think it's two or three, you know, depending on the type of mileage they have, but also another. As far as the pistops go, you know we've been talking about the brakes being a problem when it comes to this track and then you know a 3700 pound car trying to stop it in these corners is really hard on the brakes and I .
I've even heard a couple of comments from a couple of them talking about changing brake pads during the race. Bobby Allison's team indicated that they were at least prepared to make changes to the brakes and repair or replace them during the course of the event. So that's certainly a possibility right now on these pit stops as far as our pit locations are concerned. I noticed that Gerald made a pretty good move where he's standing in the pit lane, being at the end, I know with this pit lane. When you come in here, you come out of turn seven and you can make a good run to get into the pits, but then if they stop in front of you, you have to stop and then you take off, make a good run and get to the turn.
Coming out of the pit is very tight, so you have to stop again, so it's almost like you have to make one stop instead of two. He can stop right at the end and start accelerating as he exits the pit lane, looking at Bobby. Allison on the track behind Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty Bobby has had great success on road courses. He has six wins at Riverside International, the last coming in 1981, but he has had 20 top-10 finishes in 37 starts at Riverside. He has been given the floor. the drivers now by harold kinder the official starter of nascar that they will turn green again in one more lap the safety car lights are off and that indicates that they will turn green next time well, we had a chance to talk to Rusty Wallace on his expectations here at Watkins Glen, do you think there might be a problem with the fact that Riverside has a lot of runoff?
Here you get into the sand, here you have to deal with a railing, that will definitely be a problem. The problem is that you have to stay on the track, there is a lot of grass around this place, so when you hit that grass, you just go out like crazy and It's not like the sand on the river bank when you hit, you can control the car here. I have no control over what happened to Bill Elliott when he qualified at the back and it broke under him when he hit the grass, he just took off, but you have to pay attention to what's going on and stay on track, Bill Elliot .
The accident occurred on Friday. In reality he was warming up just to take the green flag for his qualifying attempt. It was at least a very serious looking race. The car went on top and part of the car went over the guardrail, but they recovered the car. went into the garage area and made repairs, qualified on Saturday in second day qualifying and was second fastest during that qualifying session, but Bill Elliott looks to move up the field now here on race day is the team from uh Elliot, I'll tell you they did a great job preparing the car the way they did and Jack is down there ready to talk to the team members.
Jack, well, I'm here with Dan Elliott, one of the Elliott brothers, and Dan, you guys had to do a lot of things. Heavy lifting rework after getting here to Watkins Glenn and the problem with Bill's car now that the race has only been run three laps under green, have you reported if the car is running satisfactorily or not? No, I didn't have the chance. "I have to get out of traffic enough to know how the car is, but based on the laps we did yesterday, it's still not what it was the first day we got here, how hard it is for a team, when you go out here, you think that We have your best stuff ready to go off the truck and then before you even qualify you just roll it up into a ball and you have to try to straighten it out and get on the field Well, we just had to make the best of what we had because we really. we didn't have, we had a spare car on the truck, but we won the kind of car we needed to race here, so we did the best we could with what we had left and we're going to give it our best shot today and I hope it's enough well when you talk about that spare car, if you go take a look at it, it looks like it's been matched because there's a lot of missing parts and pieces on that car that he says would work here, bill Elliot has moved up three spots here in the first few laps. , was in 22nd place at the start and now in 19th.
The field is beginning to move out of the number seven room towards the resumption of the race. The green flag is shown and we're back racing at watkins glenn number 12 neil bonnett moving in trying to take that fourth position from harry gant and gets off to a very bad start harry falls back two places harry gant's number 33 skull bandit falls two places like neil bonnett and tim richmond We were able to pass him when the green fly came out before they reached turn number one. The field now advanced through turns two, three and four, heading towards the long back stretch.
Daryl Waltrip leading the single file formation down the back stretch accelerates. about 160 miles per hour now hard on the brakes and downshifts entering turn five, Daryl Waldrop still leading, but only by about one or a car-and-a-half link over the rusty Wallace, Ricky Rudd rolling there on third position now with Wallace right behind. your rear bumper and there's still some fluid coming out of that race car, there's no doubt about it, maybe it's not as heavy as before, but there's still evidence of something, some kind of fluid or smoke or something coming out of that car. racing. across the start and finish line once again, this completes lap number nine, nine completed laps of 90 that will make up this budweiser in the glenn winston cup race, now there is a bit of separation between second and third again, at least in the early stages of this. race Waltrip and wallace are showing their superiority ricky rudd running in third but uh neal is still right about him neil bonnett stays up there with ricky rudd bonnet running in fourth after having made the harry gant pass and now tired again smoke Rick as he heads into turn five, yeah, that's, you know, that's why I thought before that the tire smoke might be part of the oil from the knock also at the end of the rear, right after the revs put the engine out like that.
Rusty Wallace, of course, was the winner of his first Winston Cup race here on ESPN earlier this year in Bristol, Tennessee, and that's where we'll be two weeks from this weekend, on a Saturday night , when we once again return to those high banked half mile facilities for a night race here on espn running third, let's go down to jack root bob we were talking about the problems that have happened to car 27 with rusty wallace on board remember that I told you they were going to build themselves something to satisfy the blowout and the oil, we'll take a look at it, something you could buy at your local k-mart if you wanted just some zip ties and then also a gallon can, this is what which they are going to insert into the car if you don't quit smoking in a short time, well that's an interesting little gadget, but if it works, why does it work?
Do whatever it takes. Now Wallace appears ready to make a move. Yes, he goes to the outside of Daryl Walter, running at him from behind. stretch, it's a drag race last time, Traps beat 158, but Waltrip will stay in the lead, but Rusty certainly made a good challenge coming out of the last quarter and this turn is tough on the outside, if anyone stays down, he is ahead of you. You know, halfway there, getting into that car immediately, it's very difficult to manage on the outside. I imagine there are relatively few places to pass. There are some straightaways. what can you pass now we see Tim Richmond Richmond coming there yeah he passed Neal that's Neil Bonnett and he came in fourth so there's third fourth and fifth Ricky Rudd followed by Tim Richmond and then Neil Bonnett, now Wallace. falls to the inside here on the main straight just take a look although he's not really in a position to challenge as tim richmond continues to push towards the front of the field faults that don't bother him too much i don't think richmond was the poleman qualified at 117.563 almost one mile per hour faster than the second fastest finisher, Daryl Waltrip.
Here's Dave Marcus who came in for an early pit stop. They're checking the side of that car and it looks like they didn't do any tire changes. They put gas in the car and Dave got back out. I saw him playing with the net and I don't know if maybe the net was down or something. They had to go in and replace what could have been the net on the driver's side. The side of the car might have been bent or something anyway, it wasn't there for long and it's back out there. Rusty Wallace continues to challenge Daryl Waltrip for that leadership.
Tim Richmond is back there in third position, followed by Ricky Rudd and Neil Bonnet. He is followed in sixth position by Jeff Beaudine in that yellow and white Levi Garrett car. Jeff had a problem in qualifying on Friday. He went out to qualify just after a huge amount of oil was spilled on the track and Harry Gant pitted. stop and this could be a terminal situation for harry gans, they have the hood up, he has had terrible luck in winston cup races in the past, in the last few races he had quite serious accidents at both pocono and talladega and in the last In three races, his finishes have been 31st, 30th and 22nd.
His most recent best finish was a second in the Michigan 400M. Several weeks ago they were putting the hood on the Gantt car and motioned for Harry to get back on the track, but there's obviously something wrong with that number 33 skull bandit. You know, it's a little smoke when he came out of the pits. Maybe he's a bit of a hitter or something. We will observe that situation. He didn't lose a lap, but he certainly did. he lost several positions and neil bonnett passed ricky rudd, jeff got there, you know, jeff won a gto race here with jack jack baldwin last month, so he's familiar with the course, he's had a little practice on it, several of these winston cup drivers have uh decided to compete in gto or something jeff odin makes a move on ricky rudd inland and chooses to get some road course experience running the gto series uh benny parsons has been racing in that series, everything this in preparation for what was supposed to have been a Nascar lr series, a left and right road course series, but that's on hold right now and no one is really sure whether or not there will be an lr series in the near future . 13 laps have been completed.
Continue racing in the same order with Rusty Wallace once again smoking the tires and hitting the brakes entering turn five following leader Daryl Waltrip. We're live this Sunday afternoon from Watkins Glen, New York for the Budweiser at the Glen Winston Cup. race, we'll be right back, so back here at Watkins Glen, where Travis Carter, Harry Ganskar's crew chief, has just completed another timing. You had to bring Harry in early. Travis. What was the problem? For some reason, we were starting to use up some oil. It looked like he was coming out of the vents. I think we might have overfilled the tank or something had too much oil and it creates a lot of pressure in the big case for that downshift when you drive the engine pretty high, so if the oil level drops I think it will probably stop fine, there is another indication from another car we've already told you about Rusty Wallace's problem with overfilling the crankcase and gearbox.
Well, Harry Gant has certainly returned to the field considerably, you can see there that he is trying to back up through traffic, but he has a lot of racetrack in front of him in terms of catching the leaders, so Harry Gant is not looking very good at the moment, but the car at the same time doesn't show any evidence of smoke at the moment well, a little bit maybe evident by the car as it goes down the backstretch, well I'm talking about being back on the field , Elliot is coming up, he's 14. He just passed another car coming into turn one here. so bill elliot from 22nd to 14th now and joe ruttman who started in 21st position when there was a spin in turn three, that's rick wilson in car number four doing a loop, but anyway Rick Wilson sets off in that Kodak-sponsored car trying to make a good impression on his sponsors, who are based in Rochester, New York, not far from here.
Rick was running in 22nd position when that little incident happened and now he's trying to get up to speed. Rick had a very good performance in some of the oval track races earlier this year, a great performance at Talladega, he finished 11th, but he was running with the leaders for almost the entire race, there are the leaders once more, it's daryl waltrip who continues to lead as he caught up with chet phillip and about to lap him, chet moves and allows the faster cars to move in and, uh, lap him, Rusty Wallace stays right behind in that second position and now Tim Richmond is charging to the front so and let's see if he does, he may have the advantage.
Good move by Rusty Wallace and Rusty takes the lead. Okay, he's driving that car pretty hard. You can see it sliding there. Okay, now you know the tires. I heard him say when. They're new, they run for about 10 laps and then they start to slow down a little bit, so you know it's hard to tell how hard he's using those tires, it looks like he's using them pretty well, pretty rusty, I came here with a lot of hope. This weekend they tested that car here, it put in quite a few laps and maybe had a little bit of an advantage over some of the other drivers who didn't and their testing is being demonstrated here as Rick Wilson came into the pits. jackaroot is down there, looks like there might be a serious problem with the machine, they are working under the hood checking the carburetion and timing on the car right now, taking a look, Tony Clubber is feeding it fuel to see if the jets are working correctly. the critical carburetor air coming out of the shifts this could have been the accident that would have left the circuit with the carburetor stuck, it seems like that to me, it looks like part of the linkage is actually hanging so they will have to work on rick.
Wilson's Kodak-powered machine and we got it back on the track, gentlemen, okay, thanks jack. Indications are that the leader, Rusty Wallace, may have a black flag due to that oil or any smoke coming from the car. We will be attentive this time to see if. Harold Kinder gives him the black flag, but that's the indication. Meanwhile, Tim Richmond has moved to second position, while Daryl Waltrip has now fallen back to third place. Jeff Beaudine has moved up to fourth and Neil Bonnett is running in fifth, so those issues harassing Tim Richmond early apparently aren't as much of a factor at the moment, it seems Daryl has decided the pace was too strong for the conditions. career, so it will seem that he is going to go back a little perhaps. save the tires save the brakes and you know, work a little later, well, rusty didn't get the black flag that time, but you can very easily see the smoke coming out of the back of that race car, daryl waltrip, one of the most intelligent.
Most of the smart drivers on the Winston Cup circuit, pace-wise, get to an early lead, establish what the car can do and then, very often, sit back for a few laps to watch what everyone else sees. others can do and then, in the end. of the race, they charge up the front, they come here once again and Rusty Wallace has a lead of about seven or eight car lengths over second place Tim Richmond, we understand that Rusty Wallace will make a pit stop this time or at least in En In the very near future we will be keeping an eye on that and, uh, there are also indications that if you don't come to make a pit stop of your own volition, you will be given the black flag of Harold Kinder, who is right below us on our transmission.
The location has the black flag in hand and Rusty is falling inside the race track and coming for the pit stop. Here's Jack Johnson and the team has brought Rusty Wallace to Nascar. Officials have demanded that they place the small Goldberg device. I hope to reduce fuel consumption. Oil is actually coming out of the breather. Dodson and Harold Elliott, if you go to work under the hood, you can see the smoke coming out from under the hood. It looks like this spring for mosquitoes. be a somewhat costly stop, four-year leader Rusty Wallace, meanwhile, Wallace is standing determined inside the car, he doesn't seem at all concerned about the problem, he just stands there and now gives us the signal that, indeed, He is quite upset.
If this is taking longer than one would have expected, the reason is that the area they have to get to is trapped behind two of what they call oberg oil filters, they are flat filters and they are trying to work with that. hot engine. right between those filters and the air filter the work continues it is an expensive stop now that they are lowering the hood it seems that they could lose a lap if they don't work faster but a long stop you will almost lose a lap but I don't think I'm going to do it here comes the leader tim richmond crosses the start and finish line rusty he is on the track and has already picked up speed he did not lose a lap but he is almost a lap down difficult brake for which Rusty Wallace, who was showing very determined speed and skill there in the early stages of the race.
Wallace, of course, from Fenton Missouri, the 1983 Asa champion and the winner at Bristol earlier this year. As you may remember, he also relieved Ricky Rudd at Talladega a couple of weekends ago and did a tremendous job, Ricky wasn't feeling well and was suffering from the flu and rusty Wallace pulled over and stepped in for him, took the driver's seat and He did a tremendous job and got that car to a respectable place. finish now tim richmond has the lead with jeff beaudine running second could be a problem like uh as tim experienced before the race corrected itself rick well yeah you might know you never know it could just be something in a jet, a carburetor or something like that that could clear itself up, they don't, they don't heal themselves very often, but it could happen well, he's certainly running like the car is in good condition right now with only a few car lead over jeff bodine, who is running second waltrip has dropped to third place neal bonded his fourth and uh ricky rudd dropping to fifth position sixth is al unser seventh is richard petty eighth is dale earhardt ninth is vinnie parsons and tenth is bobby's car number 22 Allison Harry Gant has thrown off the track.
I don't think this involves any kind of spin. I think Harry just went off the track and realizes that his race is over, so harry gant is among the first threats to win this race and is out of contention. Harry started in third place, but his day was over. We will be back with more ina moment from Watkins Glenn um Winston Cup Auto Racing live on ESPN this Sunday afternoon. We're in Watkins Glen, New York, for the first NASCAR Winston Cup race. at this facility since 1965. the leader is tim richmond we have had three leaders in this race daryl waltrip led for a while then rusty wallace and now the pole sitter tim richmond had a problem before he still has a problem well maybe jack root I can answer quite a bit okay to that problem, that question, bob, just a couple of moments ago there was a lot of activity in harry hyde's pit here for tim richmond harry we thought you were going to bring him you thought there was a problem well, we have a problem with the meter fuel pressure, it's reading zero in one spot on the race track and uh, Tim was afraid of running out of fuel, but we should be able to stay there for about ten more laps.
Now add to that the problem he has. the misfire at 6000 rpm, does it seem a little incredible to you that you are steering this right? We had him change the ignition, we got a backup system and he changed it and that fixed the problem so they got rid of a problem. and another one begins those kind of days for Harry's hideout team, well there's an explanation as to whether the car is still missing or not, they switch to the backup ignition system and everything is fine, well now you know that, uh , fuel pressure. I've heard a lot of guys are having trouble with fuel pickup issues.
You know, getting the right one, you know everything right in the fuel cell for fuel collection and as the fuel is running out, you know they have 23 turns here. We're getting there pretty early, so it could just be that it's passing through the fuel van, picking up some air and causing the misfire. It's another problem inherent to racing on circuits, as opposed to ovals where you only turn left. worried about the right and the left here and there sometimes there can be if you choose a problem the leaders are closing in on the number six machine of rick noop who is a former imsa racer who competed last year with the bfgoodrich team teaming up with jim busby however this year uh rick lost that ride and now he's doing the winston cup races we have a battle for the lead and jeff beaudine takes him in turn one so our fourth leader of the afternoon and the public loves it because Jeff Beaudine is his, well, maybe we should do it.
I'm not saying local track, but at least it's a home state favorite, as Jeff Beaudine was originally from Shimon, New York, he now has the lead and is making a good pass to Tim Richmond, of course, Jeff Beaudine now lives in a nice garden in North Carolina, but it grew. on the dirt tracks and short tracks of upstate new york in the chemung area here's a

replay

the car now exits turn 7 and goes down the straightaway goes to the inside of rick noop and hits the gas you know that richmond could have had a bit of that misfire from that fuel pickup issue coming out of the turn which made him hesitate a little bit, he didn't give Jeff a good run at him and entered the turn on the inside .
Bodine has the advantage now that we come back to life. The action and Bodine now has about a car and a half lead over Tim Richmond, so we've seen some pretty decent racing here in the early laps. We have had four different leaders. There was some concern that these cars would get. chained together on this circuit and wouldn't put on as good a show as you normally see in Winston Cup racing, but I'm quite impressed with several of them running together on the track and passing for the lead, getting that car a little from the side it looked like they were in the s, yes, he is running quite hard, he is his running partner, but Bodine always runs hard, running at about 152 miles per hour, we understand at the end of this back stretch the trap speeds that we are transmitting. approximately 151 miles per hour, so they are considerably slower than during the early stages of the race and during qualifying, mainly due to traffic on the track, there is Joe Ruttman, who is apparently having some problems as Rutman has slowed down drastically the speed on the track.
On the track he was running 13th after starting this race in 21st, but Joe Ruttman in that Quaker State machine owned by Kenny Bernstein is in trouble. I think he's going to make it to the pit area. He is at the entrance to the pits. area right now, so he'll make it, but it looks terminal for Joe Rutman. There is a lot of speculation from Kenny Bernstein's team about who will drive this car next year. Joe Bruhman apparently won't have the Morgan Shepard rumors in that car next. year Kenny says he will have a formal announcement at some point probably later this week now there is bill elliot in car number nine who moved up to 11th after starting 22nd so bill and allen or senior have done He spins and takes Dale Earnhardt with him.
The camera in the car provides some shots of us as he straightens the car again and the yellow flag comes up like an airliner, so it keeps the car off the ground so you don't drag the suspension and that kind of thing. to help you get back to the pits, but it's still difficult, it's not better no matter what kind of ladder, so the second problem with the rusty Wallace machine came earlier and they tried to correct that apparently overfull oil tank and now it has a tire. problem, we get into a guy's car and we can show him the problem he experienced, some indication of what might have gone wrong, but it looked like the way the camera, you know, from the angle, when he entered the curve, It looked like the rear tires.
It got loose under braking and started spinning and he caught it, you know, the first time and it puts you in the tank and the second time he just kept going with it, so the older guy went in to stop and got out again. there, but let's talk to Buddy Baker, the crew chief, and find out if there's something else wrong with a car. Bob Buddy Baker has a request. He would like to have a TV monitor here because while we were chatting before we got on air, I said dude, there was trouble after turning and you said who it was which I didn't know, it's funny, he actually did a pretty good job if he turned because as you know , he actually didn't lose that many positions, so, he says.
The car is very tight at the moment. We're making some adjustments to the tire stagger, but it's doing a great job. I didn't know it was fun, but we will also show you one of the problems on the circuits. The wear and tear on the inside of this tire, well this doesn't happen during racing activity, it actually happens when these guys come down for a pit stop. What happens is because the brakes open when the tires rotate a little. that they can put them on and take them off, it actually rubs the brake against the inside tire now, if you're too far out on pit road and you turn it too fast you could cut one, we'll have to keep an eye on that so there's some work going on.
At the racetrack, they are checking sections of the track and some guardrails. We are under yellow at Watkins Glen once again and will be back in a moment. I don't know about anyone. Daddy Baker, we're back in Watkins Glen, New York for the Budweiser at the Glen Winston Cup race and this is the largest crowd that we know of has ever seen a motorsports event at Watkins Glen, even when they were racing the Formula One Grand Prix here, they have never done that. Seeing so many crowds, they had to cut off traffic on the field very early this morning.
There must be over a hundred thousand people here, not only are the stands full, but there are two and three deep along the fence that surrounds this place. The entire Rusty Wallace race track is back in the pit area. They are trying to make sure the car doesn't rub any wheels. Now Joe Ruttman, who was also in the pit area, has gone behind the wall and is apparently out of contention. We are a third of the way through this event and at the moment there are four cars that have fallen out of the competition, namely Giaco Magicomo and the one going very early with a blown engine.
Phil Goode's number 76 car is out of the race. Harry Gantt came out. the track and as I indicated the most recent to drop out is joe ruttman in car number 26. Well, neil bonnett and number 12 are still on the track and in fourth position and this is the first time neil has competed in races since accident ago a few weeks at Pocono where he suffered some broken ribs and other injuries and is doing pretty well. We had a chat with Neil earlier in the weekend about his fitness and whether he thought he could run the whole race last Thursday. or on Friday I had doubts about whether I could come here or not and I worked a lot and you know, I got in shape, I think as far as I can do on Saturday Sunday I started coming and on the first of this week I really started feeling much better the word from neil bonnie now junior johnson and others asked bobby ray hall to stand by for some relief from driving however ray hall went home after the run in iraq they have a driver however , waiting just in case, neil Need relief, let's get more information on that from Jack Bob.
Actually, what happened is that Bobby Ray Hall was asked at Talladega if he would consider coming here and he said, "Well, I'll be here for Iraq, but I'm not sure if." I'd really like to try my hand that Ray Hall has driven before, but the gentleman next to me lives nearby in Rochester, New York, Doug Hevron, who is a modified and super modified standout who also showed his hand in Winston Cup competition and he did pretty well until he literally ran out of cash Doug, how did it feel when Junior Johnson called you this week and said, Hey, come over just in case Neil Bonnett isn't ready to do the trick?
I felt great. I felt very honored. Once before, back in '82 or '84, excuse me, I was asked to prepare for when Daryl got tired of Charlotte, so this is the second time it's happened and sooner or later I expect something to break for me here and maybe I can get a ride, is that frustrating? Let a driver like you know that people like Junior Johnson think enough of your talent to ask you to sit on the sidelines, and yet you can't secure a full-time ride in the competition. Yes, it is very frustrating. You know, I went out and I've done the best I could with the equipment I've been driving and the brakes haven't gone my way, but when someone like that asks you to drive or be ready to drive the race car, it gives you a great momentum and I hope it continues to go well, obviously the report from the track is that Neil Bonnett doesn't need any relief today, that's why there are civilians here at Doug Hebron.
Also guys, let me tell you a little bit about the reconditioning that was carried out for Neil Bonnett. Do you know where all that work was carried out at the now defunct United States Football League training facility for the Birmingham Stallions? ? That group got Neil Bonnett back together well enough to run here today isn't that ironic? Yes, and Neil was bound to determine that he was going to complete this race without letting the physical injuries he suffered a few weeks ago bother him. Yeah, okay, the green flag just came out on the track once again and Tim Richmond jumped into the water. he led when he made the jump to daryl there in the green rick drop and the shepherd going into turn number one, yeah he did a good job and you know you're just going to have to sit here and watch how these things play out and how hard it is that these guys drive, so you know they're going to race hard.
It's a good run towards him coming out of the turn. Now, what do you do in your mind when you know you're turning green? Do you try to anticipate and mentally prepare for the fall of the green? Yes, anticipation is really the main thing. You try to relax a little and hopefully speed up before the guy in front of you does. everything works fine, you approach the car in front of you when the thing turns green, so you can keep the momentum and turn around and jeff beaudine has also moved, uh daryl waltrip to second position, waltrip goes to first to third here on the half lap we've run under green since we came out of that yellow flag condition caused by Al Unser's spin that also involved Dale Earnhardt, but both cars were back in action.
We also mentioned that Joe Rudman's car had been pushed behind the wall however he has returned to racing so joe ruttman is still in this race tim richmond leading jeff bodine and daryl waltrip through the yes running in 5th position is ricky rudd sixth is uh richard petty in seventh is earhardt eighth is benny parsons ninth is bobby allison and tenth is Al unser jackaroot in the pit area, Rick, and they are both aware of something that I have detected here on the street of pits and I think it isquite interesting. We talked about race pace from the beginning, when Daryl Waltrip and company were on fire.
On this track, the first four or five laps, the race pace has dropped about two seconds now and the interesting thing is that I think there are two methods of attack at the moment, one of Tim Richmond and Jeff Beaudine and that is to run a little bit more hard trying to keep up. In front, the other is by Daryl Waltrip. It almost seems to me that he is waiting for the race to come back. I checked with Junior Johnson and Jeff Hammond and they confirmed that is the technique they are going to use. They've decided in their own mind what race pace they want to set and they're not going to deviate from it regardless of whether they're running first, second or third, like Walter Miss right now, and I guess Rick, that's basically something you have to do.
Decide before the race if you are going to try it or if you are going to relax, but it seems that in this relatively short race of only 90 laps you would be very worried and at least hold the front as much as you can, you want to stay close, but you know, like You've seen, there will be some yellow so the guys can use it a little bit to lean back, save the car, save the brakes. Save the tires, save fuel and you know, when the yellows come back up and just try to conserve a little bit, now these guys are running hard at the front and you know they all pitted on a lap 27-28 and you know the next stop.
It's about 60 laps, so we still don't know what the fuel will be like at the end of this race. That's a good point about the yellows at Indy car racing tracks, they waved the yellow flag only on that part of the track. in which there is a problem, but in this winston cup race, when there is a problem anywhere, at least we have seen it twice, they are already showing a general yellow because jeff beaudoin did not make it, they came out of turn number seven and head to the straight and jeff bodine let's see now if he makes a move with tim richmond coming into turn number one shoot the inside of the track try to get in and I'm telling you I was surprised to be able to make that move there after getting a little caught up in middle of turn one because that usually kills a little bit of momentum and he still had enough to fall behind, so Jeff Beaudine becomes our sixth different leader of the afternoon, four drivers led, but we had six lead changes and one repetition.
Beaudine almost made the move in turn seven. Here on the straight, it comes in, it just slides on it under braking. You know, he goes in a little deeper, a little harder. He is using the brakes. He goes up a little more here, but it was worth it, it worked. It's a good point. You might risk making that kind of move to take the lead momentarily, but at the same time you may be using the brakes just a little too much with the way it's coming out here, although it may be working hard and well enough to that if you can stay out front and back off a little bit and be a little careful with the brakes and tires and still hold the lead daryl waltrip is now back in third position and his teammate neil bought him running in fourth position so the hendrick team is putting in a good showing the junior johnson team is putting in a good showing here rick hendrick will be the man daryl waltrip will ride for next Of course, annual plans have already been announced for Daryl Waltrip to join the team Rick Hendrick, so he will end his partnership with Junior Johnson after this season and Waltrip is now closing in on Tim Richmond's second place car and we may be looking at Terry beyond there.
Labonte stopped in the pit area and retired from the competition and the problems that have occurred to terry labonte in recent races continue. He's had a tough time. He didn't finish sixth at Pocono a couple of races ago, but at Talladega in the most recent Winston Cup event, he placed 38th. He also finished 19th in the Firecracker 400 at Daytona. It hasn't been what you would call a good season for Terry Labonte. The bearings are apparently junk on that engine and that's why Terry Labonte. has called it a day and will apparently be junior johnson's replacement for daryl waltrip next year terry was running in 11th position when he went off the track joe rutman's problems continue as we watch the action on the track rutman has come in for another stop and he goes behind the wall for the second time, you know, if you see Waldrop running behind Tim Richmond, his car seems to be connected a little better, he doesn't seem to have to lean on it as hard as Tim does.
He runs at the same pace so I think Daryl is in pretty good shape, he's running around here not using the tires much and he can still run well with everyone. There's Beaudine Richmond running second, then Waltrip, Neil Bonnett and Ricky Rudd in fifth. Richard Petty in sixth and Dale Earnhardt in seventh, like you said, apparently has that car hooked because he's extending the lead a little bit as they head down the backstretch at about 155 miles per hour. Jeff Bodine, as we indicated, was extremely unhappy after his qualifying race on Friday, we spoke to him and he was very unhappy.
Now we turn our attention to Richard Petty as we point out that Jeff Bodine came out to the track to qualify after a lot of oil had been spilled and he thought it was pretty unfair because after qualifying the teams came out to the track and wiped up the oil, but still, jeff had a respectable qualifying speed of 114.6 miles per hour, started eighth and is demonstrating the performance of that car here this afternoon by leading there's Richard Petty in car number 43. He's running sixth place right now, staying up there with the leaders, they come single file down the main line immediately, he's right behind Ricky Rudd and he looks at Benny Parsons, he makes a move towards Dale Earnhardt, coming into the corner. number one and rick, that's apparently where we've seen the most passing here, that's how you'll see the most passing done on the road course, that's actually another one of the main differences between road courses and ovals. is that all your passes are usually made entering or exiting a turn rather than running side-by-side through it, which is the way you do it most on ovals.
You'll see a lot of that here today, so Betty Parsons moves up to seventh place. Dale Earnhardt is back in eighth place. Al Unser is in ninth and in tenth position is Bill Elliott. You can see Benny Parsons in seventh place at the moment. Bill Elliott moved up to 10th after the 22nd starting position, so Bill continues to run well coming off the field. Out of that corner, once again in corner number four, there's Bill Elliot in machine number nine practically destroyed in an accident here on Friday, but they got to work and put the car back together and it doesn't look too bad, I really had There's a lot of wrinkled paint earlier this week.
I also noticed before that he, uh, I think he's fighting against his time and moving up as well. He knows there will be yellows and he will be able to hit and it seems like he is like that. he ran at a pace and saved the car as he made his way into traffic earlier. 38 laps have been completed. Bill Elliott, by the way, finished second in the iroc race yesterday here at Watkins Lynn and also finished second at the point. qualifying and Rick, you were at that race and you didn't have one of your best days, no, it was one of our best days, we had a little misfire, this is where you see the cars now, but I just, uh After we started To back up a little, I thought it would be crazy to put this car in the fence running last, so I thought I'd better take it home.
The winner of that iroc race yesterday, of course, was Atlanta Junior, who also finished as iroc champion in

1986

. There's leader Jeff Beaudine of Shimon New York and we have Chet Phillip, who came off the track and just retired the wheels. I don't think he came full circle, maybe he did. but no serious problems occurred in corner number two and Chet Phillips is back on track and gaining speed once again. We'll be back with more live coverage at Budweiser at Glen Jackaroot with Bob Jenkins and Rick Mears here at watkins glen for the budweiser at glen and this gentleman standing next to me is retired from competition former winston cup champion terry labonte terry some burns they took you out I guess that's what we thought it was anyway what about the competition? here today is as good as you expected it to be looks like a great race well it's very hard to pass uh that's the biggest thing I didn't expect and I thought it would be a little easier to pass people than it was well it was hard to pass to terry labonte, but there's been a lot of overtaking at the front, aren't there guys there?, as we indicated, we've had six different leaders in this race and there's Rusty Wallace, who led early, he had a couple of problems, but he's Running pretty well at the moment and trying to fight his way back through the traffic and move towards the front once again.
Rusty Wallace in that number 27 aluminum guard pontiac running to the right. behind Morgan Shepard, the current moment on the track, the same way Rusty was running before, I don't think he'll have much trouble getting back there, unfortunately, he lost a lap, that's what he did, yeah. he moves in and passes morgan shepard shepard involved in a four position race here in front of him is uh, kyle penny and also bobby allison, they are racing for position 11, 12 and 13 and there we have the battle involving 8 , 9 and 10. Are Dale Earnhardt Al Unser Senior and Bill Elliott Elliott still running in the 10th position?
There's a camera in the car right at the start-finish line and maybe if we stay with us long enough we can go around the track on this lap, okay? Yeah, this is where Rowell had a little trouble earlier and you can see he was slipping a little there too. It looks like the track is getting a little slippery now and will be as the day goes on. a little bit more, so this is a very fast corner here, it's difficult, it's a lot more difficult than it looks at the back, with us on the left, the car goes light and comes back into the right corner and this is a even look, it's a little bit Sharper than it looks here when you're in the car, you know, we compared this track or at least talked about the fact that these Winston Cup drivers compete in Riverside on a road course, now they're doing a movement on him. and passing as they go down the back leg, that's where the passes will be made most of the time, you know, again on the back leg, at the end of the leg, coming back to us and right here. at the start and finish line, unlike Riverside, this of course has some elevation changes, there are actually some up and down hills and I imagine some blind spots on this race track, yes that causes some blind spots and you know the street corner workers who work here. the flags and everything they do a good job of letting you know that they let you know if there's a problem, but it's something that you really have to stay alert and look for any telltale signs of smoke or anything else on the horizon, I guess that's the advantage.
Jeff Bodine is still held by Jeff Bodine. Jeff now has a four second lead as we are still in the car with Al Unser. Major Benny Parsons has come for a pit stop, they are changing the tire on the left side of the car and Refueling may not be a routine pit stop for Benny because they stopped on laps 27 and 28 and could go much further than we've gone without a routine pit stop, so Benny Parsons has completed the job and is back out, we'll see if the problems you may be experiencing in that car continue. There is Bodine with the advantage of four seconds.
He's really stretching it here, but I have a feeling that he's far enough away now that he can calm down and just get into a rhythm. and let everything work for him tim richmond in second position the number 25 vulture machine daryl walter of running in third place and neil bought it in fourth place and in fifth would be the number 15 car driven by ricky rudd today here on espn the great Hungarian award when the formula one circus went behind the iron curtain for the first time in modern formula one history and in case you missed it, nelson pk was the winner of that race with ayrton cena finishing in second, nigel mansell third and stefan johansen fourth mansell continues to hold the points lead here and not even a weak break now and they will compete again in a week in austria, another race we will have for you here on espn next sunday tomorrow next sunday promises to be one of the most uh, interesting days of car racing in perhaps the history of espn on sunday morning we will have the formula one race for you from uh uh austria then we will have the winston cup race from the Michigan International Speedway the two-mile tri-oval in which uh The competitionis always great and then on tape delay, next Sunday afternoon we have the Pocono 500 for Indy cars and we'll talk a little bit with Rick Mears about that race in a moment.
He's run some tests there right now. we'll take this break and we'll be back with watkins glenn spinning one spinning one spinning a spinner it's schroeder okay i don't think that's right okay you're okay with that okay okay okay boris becker and ivan lindell, halfway there. after our nascar race this afternoon join us for the volvo international finals it will be a rematch of the wimbledon finals like lindell versus becker it's all from stratton mountain vermont you'll want to be with us right after we conclude this winston cup event here on watkins glen for the volvo international lendl against becker the leader here at watkins glenn in this winston cup event is jeff beaudine with now a five second lead over tim richmond third is daryl waltrip fourth neil bonnett and fifth is ricky rudd there I can see the advantage you have gained thus far, as we are just past the halfway point.
It seems like Elliot might be, you know, slowing down a bit for some reason. Bill Elliot was in the top ten, yet he has made it. dropped out of the top ten at this time, now a recheck with Nascar scoring indicates that Rusty Wallace is on the lean lap and is shown in 9th position, so we will have to go by the official word of Nascar Rusty Wallace who made a couple of unscheduled pit stops due to a couple of issues including a puncture on the left rear of the car, he is on the lead lap and running in ninth place inside al unser crisco's oldsmobile as he negotiates this race track At 2,428 miles, he is in seventh position, which I think is a pretty respectable performance for Allenzer, who was called up earlier this week to take charge of this trip.
He is doing a great job. Al is a runner. He can get anything done in any car, on any type of track and run fast. It's good to have a guy like that as at least your teammate, he's an opponent, but at least he's your teammate, yeah, that's some good dash cam photos that we get there, he's coming for the uh immediately, once again, he is running. in 7th position, allens is a senior, one of those who will be competing next weekend, as we go back to the leader, jeff beaudine, let's talk about the pocono 500, rick, have you done some testing there and what can we expect.
Well, yes, we have it. The cars are going to be fast there, we've been running a little bit and we also have a little bump in the corner, but the car is working on that to calm it down a little bit, but the cars are going to be fast. I don't know if you'll see as big jumps or gains in speed there as we have at some of the other tracks, but they'll definitely be faster, stay around 206 somewhere, okay, that's what we'll expect next. late sunday night domino's pizza 500 from pocono pennsylvania to jack road who's with gary nelson well bob actually we're at the top of pit road in what they call pits now they sell these seats but I don't think they've sold out One such guy, Gary Nelson, is calling the shots at the top of his pit position for the Gary Levi Garrett Chevrolet.
Why did you choose here to make decisions instead of on Fifth Street? Well, this area is right above our field. You know, I think it's the first Stockholm race I've ever seen from the stands, but uh, our radio doesn't work down there because we're surrounded by concrete if I go up here and I can talk to Jeff at the top ends of the course and uh, that It's the most critical moment if we have to call him in the pits quickly, I have to talk to him right there, so okay, Jeffrey's report so far in the race is that the car is running as he would like and as You would like it, I always like it when we are ahead, you know, Jeff told me he was going to run as hard as possible without abusing the car.
He's doing a good job. The lap times are really consistent and I think we are in good shape. Well, and the report is. that he will pit in about four or five laps, but come here, I want to show you something, Richard, you want to talk about some irony, look at the name of the cockpit where Gary Nelson is calling the shots. It's quite ironic like Levi Garrett Chevrolet. driven by jeff odin is leading this budweiser at glen and has extended the lead to about seven seconds over tim richmond jeff beaudine leads just after the halfway mark and we will have more live coverage from watkins glen new york just after these posts remain with Us, back in Watkins Glen, New York, for Budweiser at Glen and the Napa mid-race summary shows us the stats you need to know the leader at the halfway point, Jeff Beaudine, had led a total of 14 laps and had at that time. time about four and a half seconds ahead, but now it's more of a seven-second lead in a time of one hour and 40 minutes.
Lap leader Walter has led the most laps in this event, but right now he is running in fourth position, average race speed at 96.429 miles per hour we had two caution flags nothing serious a total of nine laps 21 cars on the leading lap and 31 of the 36 that started still in the test and there are the five drivers who have retired giacco magiccomo started early, so phil good harry gann is out joe ruttman and terry labonte those five cars have exited the competition, but jeff bodine continues to set the pace here as thousands of interested racing fans watch this winston cup event from watkins glen new york.
There is a look at the pit area. Jack has been describing to you the two-level pit area, which I basically think is an indication of the Formula One races that used to be held here, and there is Junior Johnson watching the progress of his team and its drivers are racing in third and fourth hood is third and Daryl Waltrip in fourth position back with more right after these messages from Watkins Glenn thank you, let's see one, two, one, two, three, four, that's the loudest you can hear, uh, no, we . When switching, we change microphones, you may need to reset the level, yes, they have been switching back, can you hear me? one, two, three, four, this will be about yes, we'll probably do it, okay, I switched to this one, okay, one two, three, four, five, six, seven. eight nine ten very little I need more volume thank you sir one two three four five six that's fine thank you let's live with it this way sorry what did you say john okay okay jeff beaudine leads the budweiser in the race of the glenn winston cup with a lead of about eight seconds now tim richmond bodine has led 20 laps we are on lap number 52 and we will see some pit stops here in the next few laps about the maximum number of laps they could complete without a stop it's 63 and right now we're on the left 52, so within about two laps left, if in 10 laps we should see the second and perhaps final set of pit stops, there's second place Tim Richmond in the car number 25 and Rick Jeffery has really extended the lead here, yeah, he's got that car running really well, he's just running at a good comfortable pace and you know everything's going well for him and now he's got a 10 second lead on Jeff. beaudine about tim richmond there's jeff once again levi garrett chevrolet i don't even see tim richmond coming out of the uh everyone's doing a good clean job here it's been a good clean race so far everyone's running hard and fast but it's all going Well, yes, we had a couple of spins, but nothing major, so yes, it was a very clean race, very interesting on this track, we saw some good overtaking and rust, speaking of spins, rusty too early.
The right guy, Rusty, has had a terrible day. The race started very well because the yellow flag is out. The yellow flag is out. This will allow the drivers to enter their second series of pit stops, so we will prepare for the pit stops. Root will be positioned to watch and call out some of the top leaders and how they are doing in the pit area. Rusty led in the first part of this race and looked very strong in that Pontiac, but then things started happening to him and apparently he's still on the lead lap and running in seventh, but he may have lost a couple of spots there in that turn, just yellow now, although they'll put them all together again and we'll be able to see who's who's been holding one. up his sleeve and there is Jeff Bodine still on the track, but we assume he will arrive to stop him in a moment.
Here they watch him take the turns, as the field has slowed down under this yellow flag due to Rusty's spin. wallace and here comes jeff beaudine to the pit area we will see his stop jackaroot is right there in the pits beaudine has entered the pits gary nelson and levi garrett's team have gotten to work they are going to the left side tires and Now they will make the change e They will go to the right side tires. Tim Richmond has come in as has Daryl. Now they came much later than Jeff Bodine. They are just beginning their work and in 26.6 seconds, Jeff Beaudine completed his work.
Meanwhile, Richmond goes to work, Tim Richmond's team also leaves Hendrick's operation, they are working on his machine. The left sides have been completed, they will go to the right sides as we speak. This, as we said, is the difference between pitting on one. at the end of pit road and the other bodine is far away but it's a long stop for tim richmond they continue working on the car time is ticking they are still working he is down they push him and he is out but it was much longer than his teammate jeff godin and ricky rudd completing their work has been running well with the board, it's down and away, plus a lot of good pit stops here, but one of the reasons you want to use four new tires is no point in betting because this one could be your last stop on a road fit in this 90+ lap event.
Well, although some of the pit stops were pretty long, Rick, I don't think anyone was seriously hurt because of the yellow. Wow, there's Bobby Allison, oh yeah. He was very close to hitting the tire wall there and once you get on that grass, those things are hard to stop, especially 3,700 pounds that were in turn two, going into the esses, so Allison is back on. the track, but as we said. I don't think long pit stops hurt anyone, everyone took their time and now they're out there single file once again in that yellow situation, it's better to take your time and make sure everything is done right rather than rushing and possibly make a mistake and it will cost you later, now everyone will be able to continue the rest of the race without a pit stop. 53 laps completed out of 90. there it is, there's Alex, oh, a long slide, that's when you're holding your breath and tightening your elbows and everything else right there, but he saved it and didn't hit the tires.
Good job Bobby Allison also went off the field and there's the pace car leading the field around Phil Parsons it's the first car behind the pace car we'll be back with more in just a moment where the Budweiser at Glen Field slowed down due to our third yellow flag of the afternoon, this one caused by a spin involving Rusty Wallace and allowing the leaders to come in for their second and final pit stops of the afternoon and now with the field reunited it will be a sprint here when I return let's go green flag let's try to talk to bobby allison one more time bobby allison this bob jenkins at the espn booth can you hear me yeah bob can i hear you bobby did you scare us?
It looked like you were about to hit the tire wall, you saved it, what happened? I went down to third and, going slow, I had it in too high a gear. and the brakes didn't stop the car and I had to go off the track and go down a big wide coast to avoid trying to mess something up, it didn't hurt at all, Bobby the track is, uh, slippery from all the oil and stuff. that's been set this afternoon, yes the track is a little slippery but the weather seemed to say pretty well about what we thought the race times would be okay, Bobby, last time we checked before these pit stops, you were running in eighth position.
Is the car okay? Do you have any chance of winning this? Well, the car is driving pretty well, it seems to be handling pretty well, but today we're not as fast as we should be. Well, good luck to the rest. the way we'll keep an eye on you, bobby allison and a synopsis of how his career is going still under yellow here with jeff bodine the leader and in second position is neil bonnett third is tim richmond fourth is daryl waltrip and in fifth The unofficial position at the moment it's Ricky Rudd, so we'll take another break during this yellow and we'll be back with more of Watkins Flynn New York.
We hope you are enjoying our USAC seriesfrom the Indianapolis speed room, where we have had two races. you thursday nights start at 10 o'clock eastern time we have a third one next thursday night now bev griffis of course the host won the first thursday night and last thursday night On the night, Mack McClellan turned in a superior race to win the USAC. midgets in the speed room it's an exciting type of race we hope you'll be with us at 10 o'clock this thursday night for race number three in our usac jolly rancher speed roam series well we talked about the fact that they've had their second series of pit stops, but can they go the distance without another stop cat?
What's happening? Well, we spoke to Harry Hyde, the crew chief for Tim Richmond's car, he said we wish we had two more laps and they won't be able to do that. They go to the distance, they don't believe that they said it's marginal. We checked with Junior Johnson on this end. He said that he is also marginal to them. They've been huddled throughout this entire precaution trying to determine how far they can go. going back to green flag racing whether they will return to the pits or not no one knows at this point the green flag comes out once again and the race is on jeff beaudine is your leader he goes to the inside and passes tommy riggins now tommy was on the lead lap in 16th position but now he is one lap down phil parsons leads this field he is on the lead lap but almost on the verge of falling a lot with jeff beaudine we have 15 cars now on the lead lap and jeff beaudine is is pushing everyone else away once again, are you laughing a lot?
We'll see some real racing here because we hear maybe there are some sparks at the back. It's getting a little dark, so these guys go. be in a hurry and try to stay ahead in case it happens it's neil bonnett, tim richmond and daryl waltrip running behind the leader jeff bedine yes it's gotten a little darker and we've had reports of some splashes on the track . So maybe there is some concern that this could turn into a full reign and that we will have to stop the event and maybe on top of that, Bodin Bodine, although he has led, maybe he has bought it now and Richmond and the others will try let's see if they have as much as jeff bodine has shown in the first 60 laps of this race here comes richmond he's making a move oh good move richmond takes second place from neil bonnett and now tim is closing in on our leader jeff beaudine , who has not been able to pass phil parsons and lap him, a car leaves the pit area and they also have to pass him to jack in the pit area, look at your observations, yes, well, Rick was talking about the weather and you you also refer to him.
What do we do on pit road about the big fuel question mark? I would ask Rick Rick as a host, what kind of decision do you make? You see the ominous clouds. You wonder if you'll be able to, perhaps, make it to the end. distance without another pit stop, do you drop the hammer and try to take the lead now or maybe you choose to say "well, the weather will hold and I'm going to go the distance and try to conserve fuel?" He may have a huge headache before the end of the day trying to make a decision.
Yes, it will be a difficult decision to make. You'd really know that the call would have to be just by looking at the clouds in the sky and seeing what. It looks like it's getting really dark and there's a good chance it's going to rain, I would say I have to go ahead and stand on it and try to be in front in case it does, I'll say that. What's interesting when you ask crew chiefs what they would like the driver to do? Every single one of them said we don't want to bring them back to the pits to get more fuel, so they need to do whatever it takes to make it happen. the car goes the distance without another stop, well neil bonnett and daryl waltrip are involved in a real dogfight here, bonnet is currently leading waltrip in that third position, they are going tooth and nail, they have had a good close battle all around Time here.
They have been running close to Junior Johnson's cars fighting for track position and Tim Richmond at this point is showing that he would very much like to see if he can pass Jeff Bodine. They come down the straight here.again phil parsons in the lead with richmond behind him and then this competition for third position that number 29 machine is being driven by george fulmer and here we are inside the car of allen o senior once again allens o Senior at last report was out of the top 10, but in about 15th position after an off-track excursion and some other issues that marked him out, honestly there were a lot of people entering this race based on qualifying performance of all the seniors in this car, knowing that it has a lot of road racing.
Indy car experience thought he had a real shot at this, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Now there's George Fulmer, who's sandwiched between Neil Bonnett and Daryl Waltrip Walter, having a different relationship as they move out of the s. quarters number two and three, we understand that uh al unser senior is in the pit area in that machine number 88, our camera in the car and the problem may be a gearbox problem. There it is, maybe you can confirm that it is a gearbox. problem, they have lost second and third gear and now they are in danger of losing fourth too, friend Baker, the crew chief told me a few moments ago and when it rains in our parade, it rains hard, a difficult break for a good career. by crisco osmobile and by al unser senior, you've done a great job here today, but it looks like you may be too fine for the team, you're taking off your glasses, i think we'll hear the kill switch in a moment, gentlemen, it's over for the car number. 88 now, once you're older, it's a shame for the senior to come to the Winston Cup races for the first time in many years, but he won't get a win.
We watch this battle in the straights and also tell you about our 28-58 update the American league baseball scores, that is, Jeff Bodine and Tim Richmond, following nose to tail on the race track the league baseball scores national now, don't forget we have tennis following our uh watkins glen new york car race, lindell and becker wimbledon rematch at the volvo national finals and of course our sports center update will air at seven o'clock. We also have a contest for sixth position between the number 43 pontiac um richard petty and dale earhardt and it's a pretty good contest here.
That's Tommy Riggins in number 69, machine number 69. Smoke coming out of a dime, but right now he has sixth position, leading Dale Earnhardt and Dale really hasn't been a factor in this race, at least to the point that we have given them. the top five uh numerous times in the last moments are jeff bodine and tim richmond and neil bonnett daryl waltrip and ricky rudd the sixth is petty the seventh is Earnhardt the eighth is Rusty Wallace who despite numerous problems is still on the leading lap between the top ten. and a car spinning on this jeff odin incredible jeff beaudine who had a big lead at one point until the most recent yellow card and who was ahead of tim richmond goes off course and this could spell disaster for jeff beaudine tim was putting pressure on him Pretty strong but then it seemed like on the last lap he was starting to get a little distance between him and Tim, but it definitely shouldn't be too difficult to do so now the lead is in the hands of Tim Richmond and Neil Bonnett. comes in second position this will be a true story of neil bonnett and the second winner in this race with all the physical problems he has recently experienced in ninth position is bobby allison tenth is benny parsons number 11 is bill elliott number 12 is morgan shepard 13 is bobby hillen jr the winner of talladega 14 is rookie mike waltrip who is currently the winston cup rookie of the year points leader winston in position 15 is kyle petty's number seven car and then in position 16 is dave marcus' 71 here's how Right now, the big news of the final lap is Jeff Beaudine's derivative route, which allows Tim Richmond to take the lead.
The rest of the field is Bobby Allison, Benny Parsons and Jeff Beaudine, who is now back in about 11th place, lost so much in just that little turn and Richard Petty continues to smoke. Rick is still smoking. I can't really tell if he's getting worse or not. It seems a little worse in different parts of the track, but that's it. could be a problem later on has been very consistent a little more there coming out of the corner very consistent in a very good race for Richard Petty who is the only driver in the race who raced here 21 years ago and has five road course wins, all They, of course, in Riverside.
His last win was in 1977. This was his 1000th and fourth career start here at Rivers here at uh Watkins Glen this weekend. He is currently 14th in the points standings. There's frontman Tim Richmond from Dooley. north carolina through ashland ohio and tim richmond has been consistently good the last few races and he's leading here today we'll be right back so a car off the circuit that's mike waltra from owensboro kentucky and the hawaiian punch pontiac the car se goes off course, but drives it back without any major problems, we'll see if it requires a yellow. I don't think it's going to happen.
It happens in turn one and Mike is back on track, so no yellow now. Richard Petty in number 43 has We've been smoking, we've noticed in the last few laps that it's said he might have a black flag, we'll be keeping an eye on him to see if Harold Kinder gives it to him, but it's pretty obvious, Rick, that he's coming out. smoke from that car. It's smooth, it seems to stay the same but, you know, there could be a lot of oil on the windshield, so cars behind it or something make the track a little slippery.
Also, he didn't get the black flag, so they're going to let him stay out there, he's right behind Dale Earnhardt and he was running ahead of Earnhardt until the last few laps and right behind Richard Petty, eating that smoke, there's Rusty Wallace in the car number 27, he has also been there. smoking a little bit there too, wallace too, so, you know, we've got them both running together there, meaning fifth, sixth and seventh, Earnhardt, fifth, little, sixth and Rusty Wallace in seventh position, and the car that is right ahead of all this is Ricky Rudd and Number 15 and he is in fourth place so they are still having a very good race here and they are not spreading out in any way and leader Tim Richmond is being timed in the trap on the rear part of the rear section to the end.
The rear was running at about 152 miles per hour, so they've slowed down a bit compared to what they were running before, but Tim Richmond has the lead and about a couple of seconds ahead of Niobani and this time he shows the black flag they are showing it to richard petty harold kinder waving the black flag telling richard petty that he needs to go into the pit area to have the car checked to see if it is really leaking fluid which must be a tremendous disappointment to richard because he has been very consistent today and looked very, very good and I'm sure you've experienced this before.
Rick, when you're black flag, you hate to see that black flag, you know, even if it's smoking or getting greasy or whatever, you hate to see it. when everything is running and you're still running, if it's bad enough the car shuts off anyway then you don't care, but when it's still running you hate to see that black flag, he's still running fine and you can see Dale Earnhardt making a gesture to Richard as if to say: I guess you saw the black flag and you're leaving the race field. We'll see if Richard does it. It's a black flag, but I'm sure he'll do it.
Richard Penny, of course, of Randall North Carolina, currently ranked 14th in the Winston Cup standings, his best finish this year has been a third that occurred earlier in the year in the 500 mile race in Rockingham, Carolina from the north, hasn't had good results recently, is coming yes, his most recent best result was a sixth at Riverside is in the pit area Jackaroot is in the STP Pontiac area Richard Petty stops abruptly the STP Pontiac Dale Inman stops him, They go to the back of the car in the trunk where the dry sump system is located, they check that it looks clean and dry so that's not where it is leaking they look under the car they can't find anything wrong they fill it with fuel and they send back and you can see that Dale Inman is pointing right now at the ground saying there's nothing on the ground there, we're not leaking anything, I'm going to jump up here and see if we can talk to Dale to see what the problem is, dale, There certainly doesn't seem to be anything on the ground.
Where did they say they thought he came from Jackie? I don't know, I mean, it's definitely smoking, but they might be getting some on the brake rotors or something and they're freaking hot andmaking a lot of smoke. I tried to talk them out of it but they wouldn't listen to me properly, that's the story and a tough break up especially on a circuit because you can't see it and maybe tell them where you think it's coming from, I know. and there have been some guards who smoked all day, but we'll just have to live with that, well they'll just have to live with that, tough break for Richard Petty, yeah, tough call for Nascar officials too. uh, throw that black flag, there's Eddie Beerswall in the number 64 car that's off the track getting help from the Beer Schwall corner workers in that number 64 machine, the Sunny King Ford Eddie from San Antonio, Texas, trying to restart it, but I don't.
I don't think they're going to have much success, so we'll continue to watch Richard Petty to see if that smoke continues and whether or not he can build up the lead and position that he once had in Jeff Bodine. who also continues to try to make his way back through traffic, he is not doing very well, he is back to 8th place but there are still a lot of cars between him and the leader and a lot of race track plus spins while he was in the lead and he has been trying to get back into rhythm since tim richmond is still our leader bonnet second waltrip third race fourth and dale earhardt now running in fifth beaudine as we said in eight new york chauver not far away watkins glenn that's four and a half second lead for tim richmond at this point we once again see the battle of junior johnson's cars and they changed positions on the last lap.
Now it's Dale Walter who moved into second place and simply waved to him as he exited the track. corner little friendly wave there uh daryl went around neil oh we have a problem and there's a yellow flag bobby hill and junior turning and richard petty almost making contact with him i don't think there was any contact but it sure was close and now a light touch is all Yes, now this will bring everyone to a pit stop and eliminate the possibility of everyone running out of fuel with only a couple of laps left. Petty is back on track, but we're now watching the leaders to see if they choose to make a pit stop and we're confident they will.
This is our fourth caution period of the afternoon. Tim Richmond is slowing down for an apparent pit stop to call for a big break so Jeff Woodine can help him hit. back up, catch up with everyone and there's Tim Richmond coming out of corner number seven and entering pit road, the leader is in the field, we go once again to Jackaroo, all the time, the racers bring their gifts, acquaintances in pit lane, Tim Richmond is first. one of those who reached their summit Waltrip is second and now Phil Bonnett has stopped, all three are on side tires, they are also cooling the brakes on the right side, the trip is almost complete, no, they are going. on four tires also in neil bonnett's car tim richmond the three teams working almost in unison taking a look here that's how it will be like that the junior johnson team does its job the junior johnson team does its job and puts its drivers at the front that's a big business you talk about photo relief, that pit work, the guys do a tremendous job like that when you make a pit pass, it's a good feeling, no, we say it over and over and I know people get tired of hearing it, but in fact a race can be won or lost in the pit area, that could be the situation we face here this afternoon, as Bobby Hillen's car is still stopped on the track, this will require a search of the area to take it out in the meantime, Daryl Waltrip will lead this.
Race Neal joined in second and Tim Richmond third as a result of pit work. We'll be back in a moment. Now here today there are 35 laps until the end of the race and that's the most these guys think they can do. can go, so yes, it will be interesting to see if he has enough fuel and also keep an eye on the tire situation. Bob, we have Jeff Wood as a mascot down here. Jeff Bodine is here for a stop. They had the Hooded that car, now it has power again, but things have gotten ugly here for Jeff Beaudine in the last laps he led a large part of this race, by the way, there are 15 cars on the lead lap and Jeff is the car number 15 on the right. now, he's the last one left running in 14th position, by the way, it's Mike Waltrip, then Richard Penny and 13-12 is Dave Marcus. 11th is Morgan Shepard, 10th is oh, sorry, number seven, uh, Kyle Petty would be. in that spot, bobby allison is ninth, ricky rudd is eighth, seventh is benny parsons, who has had a pretty consistent career and who goes to Bondurant driving school and competes in some GTO races apparently it has paid off for him this late, Rusty Wallace is in sixth place.
Earnhardt fifth fourth is tim richmond third neil bonnett second is of course daryl waltrip's number 11 car and in the lead right now is bill elliott with 14 laps left and it looks like the green flag will come out here in Just a moment the cars come out deuh turn number seven or at least approaching turn number seven with bill elliott in the lead now starting to pick up the pace as the cars come out of the turn the pace car dips to the inside heading out onto the street out of the pits, the green fly comes out and we We're racing once again now let's see what Daryl Waltrip does, let's see if the tire vibration is going to be a problem for him, if he can pass Bill Elliot, he kept him at bay at first turn, when you have a problem like that you tend to I get a little ahead the first time around the corner just to make sure that the real battle at this point is for third position as Tim Richmond would like to take third place from Neil Bonnet, but now Tim stays behind Neil as he heads single file up the hill slightly towards the number four corner and now to the backstretch bill elliott takes him down daryl waltrip is right behind him here comes tim richmond on the inside up neal bonded to try to take the third spot he's going to do he got it and let's look at Earnhardt, oh Earnhardt bought it, going side by side, sorry I thought it was that yellow Dale Earnhardt nose and he couldn't take the place, but Tim Richmond won third place now and Neil bought him in fourth place. and Earnhardt in fifth position we now have a lead change as Daryl Waltrip was able to pass Bill Elliott in Daryl Waltrip takes the lead again which is our ninth lead change of the afternoon, now let's see if Tim Richmond can make a move with Bill.
Elliot as they head into the straightaway, this is one of the areas of the racetrack where we've seen the most overtaking going into turn one, he's on the inside, oh we almost touched, but Tim takes the place, run here, so it's Tim Richmond. In second position we will see the lead change once again as Waltrip chose the outside to pass Bill Elliott. He really he must have had a good drive, you know, coming out of turn five to be able to get around him. At the beginning of the stretch he is working well, but he is not pulling away from the rest of the group in any way.
In fact, Tim Richmond is right on the back bumper of him. Now it's a one or two car lead, the lead that Walter Pass has. and bill elliot went up a little bit in that corner and put the car a little sideways, but he didn't lose that position. We're in the final stages of this 90-lap race here at Watkins Glen, New York, and look at Tim Richmond. on daryl waltrip's rear bumper tim has had a great season recently in the last, let's look at seven races, if we discount the 15th place he got at Michigan, he has had a second, a second, a first, a first, a first and a second and has been very competitive throughout the race.
He was our pole winner. He had a problem at the beginning of the race because his engine was missing, but they switched to the backup ignition system and he has been either leading or close to the tail. the leader since then tim richmond in second position he and daryl waltrip are really having a battle here in the closing stages of the budweiser with glenn you know elliott here he didn't even make a stop there so he doesn't have new tires and he may be trying to hold on until these guys wear the tires down a little bit and then it will even out a little bit more and Tim Richmond will take the lead.
Tim Richmond becomes our tenth. afternoon lead change only five leaders but we've had 10 lead changes now tim richmond starts to stretch it a little in daryl waltrip waltrip and tim richmond, as you may remember, fought almost side by side until the final checkered flag in Riverside earlier this year, a race Waltrip won, but it was a close battle with Richmond and they are in the same kind of duel here this afternoon at the speedway, crossing the strip once again and completing lap number 79. 11 to go more circuits. A good look at Tim Richmond, who gained some experience at this track driving an Indy car.
You heard him say before the race started. Would you like to see Indy cars race here? Rick. I really enjoyed this track. A lot of it is like that and moving around here is a good path for us, it's a nice area, plus it's a great area, so I've always enjoyed coming here, I think it really is one of the most beautiful areas in the entire United States. they're this finger lake system and there's some tremendous rock formations and gorges and waterfalls and those kinds of things that make this area incredibly beautiful now they're running single file now Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace are running around the place.
Right now it's Earnhardt in fifth and Rusty Wallace in sixth, but they're running close together on the track. He's done a great job coming back, you know, from the previous problems with the smoke and the puncture and things like that. It's really working out well for him, yes I think if I had to vote for the unlucky prize of the day I would have to go to Wrestlemania, he led this race and experienced numerous problems but through all of this he remained on the lead lap . and he's in sixth position single file down the straight, once again, bill elliott is still running in third, there's neil bonnett, then there's dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace Earnhardt and that number three car in the Wrangler Jeans machine.
He, of course, is the current Winston Cup points leader, but he is only a few ahead of Daryl Waltrip and Tim Richmond is in second position 161 points behind Dale Earhardt. Daryl Waltrip is Tim Richmond third in the standings. points dale earhardt uh his best finish recently was a seventh in the pocono 500 so there are only 10 laps left until the conclusion of this event. Now we'll see if Tim Richmond can hold on for the win after this mmm, wow, with Rick Mears and Jack Ruth. I'm Bob Jenkins, back at Watkins Clinton International Racetrack where we are. nine laps from the end of the budweiser in the glenn winston cup race it's tim richmond who is in the lead followed by daryl waltrip then bill elliott neil bonnett in fourth place and dale earhardt in fifth position you know we were going for a record when this started race today, if there were a new winner this year, he would be the 13th different driver to win a Winston Cup race in

1986

.
There have been 12 different winners to date this season, tying a modern record from 1972. There were 12 winners different ones in '83 and '84 and here in '86, but the next time we have a different winner it will set a record for modern Winston Cup racing. Now both Tim Richmond and Daryl Waltrip have won in competition this year and have also done so. bill elliot, but when we get back to the fourth place runner, which is uh neil bonnett, he hasn't won on the winston cup route this year, so right now he's the one most likely to continue this series of 13 different winners now we have a battle between Earnhardt and Bonnet Earnhardt looking to the inside of Neal at the end of the stretch in turn number one and Earnhardt still with that inside advantage as they go through the s.
He's really giving Neo Bonnet a challenge right now. They're both leaning pretty hard to see him sliding sideways into turn five, using them pretty well, so they're going to have a good battle to the end here, I think there's a little bit of a racetrack between first and second, now Rusty Wallace wanted to get ahead of Dale Earnhardt, but a slower car got in the way and Rusty had to return to formation. They exit turn number seven and complete another lap. This is the completion of lap number 82, eight. More laps until the end. A little bit of a racetrack now between first and second.
Elliott backs away a little. Remember that he didn't make a pit stop during the last yellow we had and is trying to stretch his fuel economy to the end. Race and Neil bought it with some tire smoke from the side, from the side, oh, and that's Mike Waltrip, who spun. Waltrip spun and kicked some dirt onto the track. It's the second time this afternoon that Mike tried the grass and went off the track. Of course, this occurs in corner number three. I think that, in any case, Waltrip is back under his own power, he does not need a yellow card and it seems as if there washad any contact with the retaining wall, if not, uh, in that incident earlier that day because the back of that car is a little banged up there, once again, there are the first two tim richmond and daryl waldrop tim richmond won the poll for this race, the third of the year and daryl waltrip started this race from the second starting position, so we have the drivers who started first and second still running first and second with only seven more laps to go in this race Boy the names that won here are just a racing history book, they started racing formula one cars and we have Kyle Petty who also went off course but it's just a momentary excursion off course and he came back to going out, kicked up a little dust, maybe visibility problems for some of the drivers behind him, but Kyle is fine and back on track he started competing in Formula One.
Back in 1961, here in Glen, Ireland won that career. Jim Clark and Graham Hill simulated Formula One racing for the next six years. Jackie Stewart, our ESPN colleague, won here at Watkins Glen in Formula One. In fact, this is where he retired after Francois Sever died in 1973. The last Formula One race was held here in 1980. Alan Jones he won it. Jill Villeneuve was also a winner and now we have Dale Earnhardt really challenging the hood for that spot. That's the battle for fifth place. position you set him up coming out of that turn to run at him and it looks like it's working let's see what he does he's on the inside of the race track heading into turn number one we've seen numerous passes here today and we see Another , Earnhardt, goes to fifth place and Rusty Wallace, I think he wanted a little bit of that Neil Bonnett cartoon at the end of the stretch, but he couldn't do it and Mike Waldrop continues to have problems.
He's obviously experiencing some serious problems and Bobby Allison. He also went off on this same corner, there may have been some oil in that area. Mike Waltrip goes off course and just behind him, Bobby Allison, but both will return to the track and continue in the race. Bobby Allison was running in 11th position when that incident occurred. happened and Mike Waltrip was winning in 15th place, so there were a couple of cars on the lead lap, but none of them were competing for the win. Now the leaders are closing in on Chet Phillip and Tim Richmond easily overtakes him and now Daryl Waltrip too. of those problems also at this point in the race, you know that the brakes can be disappearing and it is very easy to go in too hot like that right at the end of the game and for the brakes to go out, you go off the track like that four more laps to wow it's a dogfight between tim richmond and dale brother daryl waltrip tim richmond with only a very short car length lead now in the run up to a tight wall it means a definite move up in points for tim richmond yes can add to his total here this Afternoon, he is currently 185 points behind Winston Cup points leader Dale Earnhardt, but this will certainly increase his total, although he won't gain much because Waldrop, who is second in the points classification, is second and Earnhardt, who is the leader. 4th time he continues to abuse that race car on the track sliding it through the corners but he has put together a very consistent and good race by the way jeff beaudine is back in the pit area and the problems continue for that levi garrett chevrolet jeff bodine back. in the pit area having led a lot of this race maybe another lap click now three to go and it's a 2.19 second lead 2.19 seconds for tim richmond what a good battle going on here with elliot Earnhardt Earnhardt looking for that third position.
Bill Elliot is third right now, but Dale Earnhardt is there to make the challenge and it seems to me that Tim Richmond is slowly pulling away from Daryl Waltrip. Yeah, and if you can put Tim Richmond, put some slower cars between him and Waltrip. It will be an even bigger advantage for him, but it looks like Tim is now pulling away from the lead. He has built up a lead of about two and a half seconds and we will time him next time to see if that increases Bill Elliott and Daryl Dale. Earnhardt is fighting here for that horizontally tight third place coming out of there, this could be the time to slide up, he can't make up his mind here, they're in third and he's off the track, but that late braking will only do that to you momentarily, but he did a great job driving two more laps to go next time it will be the white flag for Tim Richmond.
Here's Earnhardt and Bill Elliott for third place. Earnhardt can now step away from Bill a bit as Elliott. He may still be worried about fuel, although he would be making progress at this point with less than two laps to go, now he's looking very loose in the last two laps as well, you know, he's really been having to, no, not stop. in the pits to change the tires. I'm sure the tires have gone a little bad, he's really slipping and sliding a lot there, but you have to wonder if that wasn't actually a pretty smart move for Bill when he decided not to go into that last one. yellow flag oh yeah I think that was a good move with less than two laps left, now Earnhardt is starting to put some distance between himself and Bill Elliot and it looks as if Tim Richmond has at least one slower car between him and Daryl Waltrip, so it's looking pretty good for tim richmond here he comes out of corner number seven the white flag is out on the last lap the budweiser at glen here they come down the straight it's a 1.15 second lead for tim richmond if daryl waltrip goes to make the move he's going to have to do it soon he goes in and passes george fulmer a slower car looks at Earnhardt he goes sideways coming out of turn one but he keeps that third place these guys are working here they are working well tim richmond se is moving away it looks like daryl waldrop tim richmond will win his fourth race of 1986 and that will be the most wins any driver has had dale Earnhardt had three wins tim richmond had three wins jeff bodine had two but tim will now be alone in the win column wins if he gets this win here this afternoon and he has about half a lap to go down the stretch for the last time there's still about a second lead for tim richmond but he looks very, very strong he's in corner number seven tim richmond is about to win the budweiser at glen he puts his hands up he comes out of turn seven he turns a little to one side the rear tires go off the field but it doesn't make any difference tim richmond won the budweiser at glen second place was daryl waltrip and third place went to dale earhardt fourth to bill elliott and unofficially in fifth place was neil bonnett in an outstanding performance here this afternoon after having some serious doubts about his physical ability to go all this distance but he does it and neil bonnett finishes fifth sixth unofficially was Rusty Wallace seventh was Ricky Rudd eighth was betty parsons ninth, kyle petty and tenth was richard petty so the pennies unofficially ended up at ninth and tenth, eleventh was morgan shepard, 12th was bobby allison despite of some farm racing at the end of the event and 13th was dave marcus in car number 71. tim richmond of dooley north carolina through ashland ohio has won the budweiser in the glenn's winston cup race and will go to lane victory to talk to jackaroot right after this foreigner, the approximately 100,000 fans who gathered here this afternoon begin to leave as they have I have seen a tremendous Winston Cup race here at Glen, winner Tim Richmond second Daryl Waltrip third was Dale Earnhardt fourth Bill Elliott fifth Neil Bonnett the sixth through tenth place finishers Rusty Wallace in a tremendous brave battle this afternoon Ricky Rudd finishes seventh Benny Parsons consistently eighth kyle petty a couple of off-road excursions but finishes ninth and richard petty after a black flag and a couple more problems he finishes in tenth position so it was a great race rick yeah it was you know I gotta praise these guys they just did.
Tremendous work on the track today, I think a lot of people were expecting a little more crashes and wear and tear and that kind of stuff and it didn't really happen and you just have to come with the drivers and the teams for the great work of everyone. You're right? I think, of course, a lot of this is caused by the press, saying, "Oh, there will be a lot of crashes and the guardrails are too close to the race track, you can slide." at Riverside and I slid in the sand and never hit anything but they were predicting some maybe serious crashes here at Watkins Glen but it just didn't happen and it was a great race yeah it was good let's go down to talk to our budweiser winner at glenn and the winner's circle interview will be brought to you by the goodyear eagles, you either have goodyear eagles or you need them, here's jackaroo, well who said who says road racing is a wild boar, congratulations to tim richmond, it was a big whale?
Run, I'm telling you there were a lot of tough guys out there and we held off a little bit for a while to make sure we had the brakes to be able to compete with them at the end and the car worked. cool, I mean the harry hyde and hoe folger team, you know, they're making me look really, really good and they're making it a lot easier for me to win races and, you know, I can't stand much. credit because they're the ones that put this team under me and rick henry and I want to say hi to rick's mom in charlotte she was sick and uh my sister in ohio in ashland uh the whales wreck in uh deerfield but they Anyway, now you're going crazy, hey listen, four wins, now you're the guy leading, you have four, Earhardt had three, you've moved into the leadership role, what's up with the Winston Cup points chase? be there by the end of the year, this has to be one more mark even though you gained only a few spots on Waltrip and the rest on Earnhardt and the rest of them, well, you know, some drivers seem to think that. the media and the newspaper and hey harry there you go now there's a harry hyde guy who is absolutely proud harry you know at the beginning of the year you said that tim richmond was really going to be the cat to deal with now how? you feel good, I think he's great, I think he's great, I couldn't say enough for him, you know, he just ran a beautiful race all day, he kept his race calm and smooth and you know, it just shows that he's a champion, it's a champion at all times.
Well, I'll tell you we have Rick Hendrick here too and this is a guy we don't normally see in victory lane. Rick, a two-car operation, you've won with both, but this is the cat. that's really doing the job and look what we did, we brought the old guy out of retirement, how's that for an old guy, Timmy drove a great race and we couldn't be happier and I'm so proud of Harry. and tim this year and I don't know how many are going to win he said he was going to win eight I think you can win eight years I promise you I would win six so I have two more left what do you think?
That Richmond well, I'd take it, but also the guys in the engine shop are bigger than everyone, you know, this worked like a charm all day and, uh, I'm just glad to be here, but what Speaking before about this championship thing, a lot of drivers think that talking about this and in the newspaper and stuff has something to do with the track, but this thing down here is going to do, you know, if it can be talked about, it will and and if it can beat it , he will and if he can't, then I like third place too much.
Richmond says put your foot where your mouth is gentlemen, well he didn't win much as far as points go, he's still in third place, he won 15. At Earnhardt we're still 160 points behind in the battle for the Winston Cup . We will return to Watkins Glen, New York, and watch our race recap. A race that Tim Richmond won. He led 28 of the 90 laps and the margin of victory was. 1.37 seconds, 2 hours, 24 minutes and 56 seconds, Jeff Beaudine led the most laps with 33. The average speed of the race was 90.464 miles per hour. We had four yellow flag periods, a total of 19 laps. 13 cars finished on the lead lap. 10 lead changes between five drivers and we have a tremendous day of racing in a week.
