final

The day began with Tom Weiskopf leading the field at 9 under par from Jack Nicklaus who was one shot back at 8 under par and Johnny Miller who had broken out of the group and was at 5 under par, immediately Nicholas started with a bogey and by had therefore slipped back to 7 under par. Jack turned around and Bergy, number two, made birdie. Number three finally got to 10 under one behind Weiss Cobb when Jack Nicklaus teed up on the ninth hole.

You may remember that he is the one made famous by Captain Billy Joel in the 1954

tournament

and he destroyed this hole when he birdied the four. days in a row in the

tournament

in a friendly round the next day he made birdie and the following year Billy Joe also made birdie and so another birdie attempt by Nicholas Ball and so Jack Nicklaus is making the turn 3 under par for the day 11 under par for the tournament and the word has spread, it's Nicholas and Weiskopf face to face now back to Brent Musburger hello everyone, this was Skelly welcoming you to Augusta National the fourth and final round of the

More Interesting Facts About,

1975 masters tournament final round broadcast...

The day began unceremoniously with a bogey. at number one since then he has made four birdies to tie with Weiskopf at 11 under par, there is someone else red hot so let's go to 16 and here is the Hale Irwin Open champion and he is really hot today, he is 7 under par today 5 down for the tournament, this is this famous short hole of 1690 yards, playing all today from the back of the pea to the back right corner of the green, where the flag came just a few feet from the edge and there is water there the left one that soaps us as we look towards the tee and that's how the Nicklaus 11 ice coffin is now under each of them.

Miller just has to get an eagle somewhere and he could join them. and no one really wants a playoff, but what a playoff it would be, head to head with Nicklaus and the bike, now here's Hale Irwin, like I said, 7 under par today, 5 under par overall, Open 16 champion 190 yards with a flag right in the era behind. maybe 200 well ok its on the top level of the green should come down from the honey and have three for four power for a 65. Seemed very happy with it but its ok to play without it when Bruce Devlin Australia started . to make up for one, he beat Bruce mortally, you had a great chance, yes, about five years ago, I remember, and in Short and to the right, right on the edge of the green, for Bruce Devlin, the Australian we go to 12, this one is the other. part of three on these beautiful back nine holes at Augusta National, are deceptively dangerous.

The 12th hole over an elevated creek, you see the water in the background, a big bunker protecting the Cup today, the flagpole just to the right of that bunker and here's Bobby Nichols, who got off to a great start here on Thursday with 67 a former PGA champion said it was his best start at Augusta the first time he led this tournament he was the first round leader and then fell to 74 but today he is playing bravely 200 for today and five under par for the tournament still with some chance, for sure the leaders collapsed somewhere on these great holes today Bobby Nichols playing the 12th there has been virtually no wind here today and that is a great element of this hole when it is windy this hole is scary but little wind today we've had four birdies posted already beautiful nickel swing shots too high I'll have to hurry it just runs out of the bucket into the pudding service because of the height too long for the pike sticking out of the wind starting to rise again There have been ups and downs for the whole day.
Arnold Palmer, four-time Masters champion. It was here at Augusta that sportswriter Johnny Hendrix named Arnie's army 15 years ago and he has since become one of golf's legends. even par for this championship stay left pay the flagpole they are blowing from right to left tilt the flagpole and almost a 1 yeah look at this again Arnold Palmer bids for a 1 there has been a hole in one here since a long time ago 1959 by Bill Hyman and this is how close the legendary Arnold Palmer came to scoring the third ace of this confusing hole here on the 12th hole at Augusta, this is how close and it actually turns out to be a bad break dating back to 18 Milah Barbour. executing his putt and will leave it just short of the hole when it breaks.
We are so full of pressure and tension in this fourth and final round and the focus, the single point, boiled at number nine when they reached 9 Tom. Weiskopf was the 11th leader under Jack Nicklaus, who had made bogeys and had a string of birdies, he was back at 10 under and Nicklaus proceeded to birdie number 9 to draw level with Weiskopf at 11, Tommy made a magnificent approach on the 440-yard nine. for the flagpole. on No. 9 is about 12 feet from the edge of the green, which is right where Wise Cuffs' ball is and then it was Johnny Miller's turn.
Miller was 8 under at this particular juncture, three behind a wise cloth and, of course, three behind Jack Nicklaus. and Miller doing a bit of body English also hit his ball on the green and had a possible birdie putt, so the situation at nine had come down to the fact that Miller was looking for another birdie and from quite a distance the birdie elusive. and that put him at 9 under par, 4 under par for the front was now Tom Weiskopf, could he keep the pressure on Nicholas? He had made birdie. Miller had made birdie. Weiskopf, if he could have made a birdie from about 12 feet away, would have taken a one-stroke lead again.
Weiskopf, remember?, had taken that long, agonizing birdie putt on the 18th yesterday to take the lead, but now his shoe was on backwards. He knew Nicholas had made birdie and was asked to rise to the challenge. Tom had birdie three and six today and why Scott left. his birdie smashed under the hole then he was able to hit it to get par from him now on 10 we are live the 10th hole has changed a bit the tee has moved slightly to the right as a sizeable ridge was removed from the tree. The branches on the left were cut and the left side of that street receives the road.
He runs it to the 10th green, but he's still on this hole, which is a 485-yard par 4, so Johnny Miller and Tom Weiskopf with Weiskopf and Jack Nicklaus tied it. at 11 under par and it will go to 16 and we only have time to see the second here from the Open champion Hale Irwin this for a par 3 we can put it in more fours it will be 65 and right in the middle we have 12 Paul, remember that Palmer hit the shaft of the flag with his tee shot, but I'll have to settle for par here. 12. A little self-reproach from Arnold after taking that detour to the right side of Palmer, who was just about to make the third hole-in-one in history. here it is on Claude Harman's 2 in 1947 and Bill Hyman in 1959 and a few moments ago you saw Palmer's tee shot just before Palmer played Bobby Nichols.
Palmer's playing partner was trying to tie for fourth place and he has it. Bobby Nichols just tied Tom Watson for fourth place at 6 under, we're back to 10, I also remind you that Weisskopf and Miller are playing behind Nikolas and Watson Weiskopf made a par and Johnny Miller is trying to make his birdie and he doesn't he did it. so on number 10 Nicholas and Watson separated Weiskopf and Miller separated and the situation remains the same Weiskopf and Nicolas 11 under par in a tie Johnny Miller fell back to 9 under par and with Tom Watson 6 under par we go to 13 Bobby Nichols on the tee at 13,475 yards on a par 5 and today, with a favorable wind, Nichols, as you remember, just birdied the 12th to get to 6 under par.
The apartment could be a problem for nickels. He likes to hit the ball a little off the tee, but there is water. in that creek, let's go back to 12 Billy Casper Casper won two US Open championships, he just bogeyed the 11th hole and it's a little strong and back to the sand here and that's the obstacle there, we could really have a dangerous shot back to the 13 Arnold Palmer that's a good shot right down the middle of the fairway this is what Palmer will have when he reaches his ball and Nichols is apparently in trouble that's the shot for Palmer let's go back to the 12 Lee Trevino studies this small shot but can be scary, of course victory here is a big factor and that of course influences club selection, but this hole is set up pretty well for Lee with a flagpole down the right to the green.
Trevino prefers to play a left-to-right shot so he can set this ball in the middle of the green and it just faded, that might be what's going through his mind at 155 yards, proving again that you don't need long yards to have a Great golf hole, this is recognized as one of the great one shot holes. In the world, here is Treviño, probably a 7 I, but he is very tall, that looks excellent, here the closest shot to the cup is the 12 and there is a tournament just a few centimeters away from the one. Pahlavi does not come back from a bogey in a difficult game.
The 11th is now very close and he should easily get the birdie from him on the 12th which would put him back at 4 under par or three under par. There is the result of Treviño's great shot on the 12th hole. One of the most important tests, we will see it again. Watch Treviño's swing. that familiar ending and the gunshot, you heard the order very loud, how is that about the behavior of little Treviño who now crosses the famous Ben Hogan Bridge, one of the two that cross Ray's Creek, the one that leads to 12th Street and the one that Don't look to your left leading back to 13th Streets.
The Byron Nelson Bridge honoring two of the great master champions. Returns to 13 for Bobby Nichols' problems. Behind the tree, not in the water, but without too much draft. That's what Nichols has to do, he's in the woods, in those trees, if you look to the right side, Palmer is on the street, let's go back to 12, Treviño is coming, you'll see again how close he is there less. over a foot away for a Lee Treviño birdie back to the 13th for Arnold Palmer's second shot coming toward the green with a low shot going left on the green safely for his partner, but look what a putty playing with Bobby Nichols who is still inspecting the situation in the trees Nichols continues the discussion at 6 under par and is in trouble at 13 now we pause for five seconds to identify the station this is Augusta National a 365 acre plantation nursery 80 years or more before Bobby Jones or Cliff Roberts saw it.
In those days it was known as Fruitlands. Hundreds of varieties of pears, apples, and peaches fed Confederate armies in the early years of the Civil War. Alastair McKenzie was the architect of this magnificent piece of the golf world and has nourished both players and fans since the Masters began in 1934 and today, in the fourth and final round of the 39th edition of the Masters, he nourishes us again all. with its rarefied beauty and what has turned out to be a magnificent battle for first place and the Masters trophy, a miniature sterling silver replica of this for the winner, let's pick a play as we address our announcers in their different seasons in Augusta.
National Golf Club I'm Jim Thacker reporting from number 12, 155 yards over the elevated Creek, a par 3 and it was at this famous spot called n corner where Nicklaus had his only shining moment yesterday and his fight with Tom Weiskopf Lacy was with an 8 iron here. and then score the birdie to temporarily break the deadlock and take the lead again and I'm Pat Summerall. I'll be on the 13th, a par 5, 475 yards, an absolutely magnificent hole. Jack Nicklaus got to the green in two with this shot yesterday, but missed a golden opportunity to increase his lead when he three-putted and just parred Jack Whitaker on the 14th.
The 420-yard dogleg left par 4 was the green Most interesting double level and very reminiscent of the famous st. Andrews hole 18 with his famous valley of sin yesterday Bobby Nichols hit his second shot on the second level of this green, calmly rolling into the birdie tube that temporarily put him at 6 under par and right in the middle of things. I'm Ben Wright. I will be reporting on the play on the 15th hole, par 5, 520 yards and a lot of water. Tom Weiskopf created a chance for a third home birdie with this third shot yesterday, but unfortunately he missed the small way.
I'm Henri. Longhurst and I will be behind the 190 yard par 3 16th and one of the great short holes in the world and that was one of the great tee shots that played straighter yesterday with the head of the main flag coming back a little and now the boat very. Dangerous 12 feet down the hill I could escape with him from the day this is downright burnt. I'll be reporting on the action today from the 400 yard tree studded par 4 on the 17th. It was here yesterday that a struggling Nicolas scored a poor second shot from a hundred yards out and I had to fight my way down and I'm Vin Scully.
I will be reporting on the game on the par 18 for 420yards uphill to a two-tiered slippery, undulating green, let's go to 12. Jack Nicklaus tied for the lead. with Tom Weiskopf and Weiskopf is in trouble at this very moment here is Nicklaus playing up to the 12th hole where yesterday he had the birdie looking great just above the flagpole he had little of a good birdie spot Tom Weiskopf is in the water the 11th hole we heard reports of life in the water and Nicklaus has hit his tee shot high on the green the deadlock could be broken shortly those seem to be the possibilities now young Tom Watson is now the leader in this tournament, seven of The top eight have each won at least one major championship.
Here's the exception that should tell you something about Tom Watson playing tremendous courage here in poise being matched with Palmer and now Nicklaus tee shot too high and a fine went to the 12th Tom Watson we'll add a birdie chance here it is right now PAR 5 under par just one shot off fourth place and there you see Nicklaus's ball resting on the green and a very flat line towards the cup and a chance to score a birdie that could break the deadlock if it doesn't break first because on the 11th hole There's Johnny Miller. On the green we had a report that Tom Weiskopf was in the water on the 11th hole.
Remember there is a lake right there protecting the left front and there are white taunts, so apparently it is true that Weiskopf has the ball about to land , so it will be Weiskopf who falls. The third stroke for the penalty will be playing the fourth shot to the green and his share of the lead is very much in jeopardy. Here only a miracle could save Weiskopf. He shares first place. He is the drop behind the water hazard, maintaining that point where the ball last crossed the boundary between his ball and the flagpole that is according to the rules of golf.
Now Tom wants to inspect the green again, the landing area where he will play a Weiskopf and there has certainly been a lot of pressure due to the weight. Um and Jack will play against each other so much that Nicklaus is just one hole ahead on 12 looking for a birdie putt Nicklaus was on the tee on 12 instantly we go to 13 a long eagle putt for Arnold Palmer Oh just a little too firm back to 11 on the 12th green right here jack nicklaus Terra the 11th is Tom Weiskopf now Nicholas is aware of why Scott had trouble saw the shot from the 12th tee the third shot of the time Weiskopf the par 4 hole 11 great shot from Weisskopf and time Now, playing his fourth shot, he has a chance to at least say bogey.
Nicklaus saw the reaction that could be heard from the chairs. He knows Weiskopf made a good shot, but he knows he didn't go in. Johnny Miller will try to birdie the eleventh Weiskopf. and now here's tom what's right below us putty for birdie to get to 6 under par oh no, too close for watson you read that line perfectly clear it just didn't fall I was breaking in that direction this will be a par to leave it a Tie 5 under with Hale Irwin, where he's headed now Jack Nicklaus has regained the lead even though Weiskopf hasn't finished the play at 11, the best Weiskopf can do is five and unless Nicklaus three-putts here, meanwhile he would be back at 11.
Johnny Miller still has plans to win this championship, trailing by just two strokes for birdie and getting within one. Nicholas will hear this cheer if he goes, we also hear the moan as Miller closes in for birdie, but we'll get it better now, now Nicolas. ahead of the 12th bidding here for his unprecedented 15th major championship and in the history of the golf course, this would give him a two-stroke lead, it would be his third consecutive birdie in this entire set, but today there was no break, although Nicolas par, although it now puts him in the lead Jack Nicklaus at 11 under par as the only leader in this

masters

championship is trying to win his fifth green coat never happened now on 11 Tom Weiskopf fighting here to save a bogey five his approach shot caught water as he pitched towards the flagpole that stands precariously in the left corner of the 11th today is a terrifying shot off that slope Tom didn't quite hit it for bogey why does he stop a bogey on the 11th hole and fall again at 10 under par? and now he is behind Jack Nicklaus by one stroke Johnny Miller needs this par putt to stay two and only one behind his playing partner in terms of very expensive Cup, in fact, bogey by Miller, looks in disbelief, but Johnny Miller now drops to 13 on the tee Nicklaus loves his hole, tremendous drive from Niklas right in the middle of the fairway and there is no doubt that he can reach the green in two Tom Watson playing with Jack, he has far surpassed Nicolas , tremendous drive by Watson, back to 18 as if we needed More excitement, Taylor, when the US Open champion, acknowledging the applause of the crowd, what a remarkable round he had today, 8 under par for the day, made birdie one, two, three and eight, came back and gave up 10 13 15 and 17, Hale Irwin needed a par to tie the course record 64 set by Lloyd Mangrum in 1940 tied by Jack Nicklaus in 1965 at Maurice Bembridge last year L Arwen back to the 12th Johnny Miller on the 12th trying to overcome the disappointment of a bogey on the 11th and he's in the butter he cut it over the water but Miller is in the sand as he was going straight for the flagpole a little short now Tom Weiskopf Tom had a big barrier here on the back nine, he played the back nine last year and even the par was 8 under par on the front nine, thinking it cost him the championship, he finished second and was 1 over par. on the back nine for 36 holes here this year, but he surprisingly dropped 32 yesterday, just like his win last time.
The week in Greensboro helped him overcome a psychological barrier and he thought that to give him a big mental boost, now comes the costly bogey on the 11th hole and Weiskopf has lost his share of the lead and now reaches the 11th hole, the 12th, where he scored . three pars in a row in the first two rounds have had the great 66 from yesterday's seminar very high, but it will be on the green but not near the flagpole, that is the putt around 45 feet where Tom Weiskopf from the 12th returns to the 18th Hale Irwin is not only trying to tie the course record but is looking for a possible ninth birdie.
The record is eight art wall birdies and he already tied that wall. He had eight birdies when winning the 1959 Masters. He birdied five of the last six holes. Irwin on the backside has birdied 10, 13, 15 and 17 that was his birdie at 17 now let's go back live and see what he does with this load he is 21 22 feet away from the pin don't believe it heroine he took a look at the hole and took off otherwise he wouldn't have had any record of nine birdies at the Masters so the ties are at war with eight birdies and if he just dimples 338 on that hole he will tie the course record of 64 Loyd Mangrum Jack Nicklaus Maurice Bembridge and now Hale Irwin at 64 years old, what a day, the fourth and final round of the 1975 Masters really did something, let's go back to 12 and there have been many

masters

.
It's just awesome to see this huge wave of galleries here for the first time with Nicklaus. with Weiskopf moving around Amen Corner and Tom Weiskopf facing a 45-foot test at least here to try for a birdie that would put him back in a tie for first place at the moment Jack Nicklaus 11 under par is the leader Tom Weiskopf one shot behind Johnny Miller is not a lavit despite having over 11. Miller will play first from the bunker. Miller is the only player in this field today that he reached that bunker, but look at the leaders Weiskopf Nicholas Miller, let's go now to the 13th and here is the leader ready to bat. for the green at 13 he goes left on the bank and comes back toward the green, but off the putting surface, a long way from the hole he made here yesterday after hitting the green in two, back to the wide 12th Tom Weiskopf shoulders have now fallen from first place, we are talking about the leaders Weiskopf Nicholas Miller Nichols Kasper Irwin Trevino all major championships, with the exception of Tom Watson among these eight leaders at the moment, which gives you a great indication of the intricate and subtle ways here that typify this great Augusta National, the caliber and the experience to play well, okay, uh Weisskopf for birdie to tie for 13th with Tom Watson has advanced, beat Nicholas by about 25 yards and is right next to Nicholas Specter 12 to tie for first place Weiskopf great putting speed on the high side should improve his par to stay within one a week ago Tom had what he called the biggest break of his career 64 and came here to shoot 66 yesterday, for which Tom, who finished three times runner-up at the Masters is certainly back on his game for par the mighty Weiskopf is still just one away with those long par fives remaining 13 and 15 Tom of course I will never forget the fat 5 iron that hit on 16 last year and that might have cost him put a green coat on him - now here's Johnny Miller Johnny, who really got the confidence he needed to start his career here at Augusta in 1971, a 68 68 finished tied for second place with Nicholas now on the par three to remain at 8 under par.
He has to be losing by three and that is why at this moment in the third round of the final round of the Masters the leader is Jack Nicklaus with 11 under par, let's now go to 13 where Nicholas and Watson have almost the same shot well above the hole . About 120 feet away, Nicklaus is 3 under par for the day and is the leader, one ahead of Weisskopf, which is why Scott is back on the tee at the 13th right now. It has taken Jack a long time to find an eagle that he made in the final round last year.
Here, when he was chasing Gary's players, Weiskopf doesn't believe Weiskopf can reach the green with his necklace. He has to gain some speed somewhere very short. Nicklaus Watson's number has almost the same shot. The information is that Weisskopf probably won't be able to try to reach the green in two. Look how. Shortly Nicholas was waiting for his fifth green jacket at Augusta National. He didn't hit it for par, he just threw it for par, here he is 1 under par back to 13. Watson is almost ready now that he has the putter. He is about 118 feet away. That one has more gas than Nicholas', but it's still not enough, however, it's a good effort for Watson.
Here's that decorator who messed up in the second round back to 14. This is Bobby Nichols for the powerful body pair he was. here amazed 6 under par back to 13 Jack Nicklaus left about 30 feet Watson has about three feet for his birdie could add to his tee could increase the female tattoo forehand but didn't break, go to a hole where there are 30 chances and The Eagle chance is always here, you get the same thing you did yesterday: 3 putts or chip weekly and then to say it, Watson could finish 6 under par if he could do this and he makes the Nexus to the last Kissin Watson and Nicolas are going to 14 Meanwhile, Weisskopf was toward the right side of the tee.
It seemed like he had it in mind to get to the green in two. That's what he has, although he would like to hit the ball off the tee. He couldn't make it. I decided that I think the layup is a good shot. Johnny Miller hit the perfect tee shot right down the middle of the fairway around the corner where he certainly hit the green in two. Yesterday he hit a 4-iron on this hole and if anything, he drove it better today than yesterday and will have a beautiful image, but safely on the green, so Miller reached 213 and, at this moment, in the final round of the Masters, the leader is Jack Nicklaus with 11 under par. good pair, we've got it all together for the fourth and final round of the 1975 Masters Tournament.
Jack Nicklaus is stubbornly clinging to a one-stroke lead over Tom Weiskopf and, as we saw with Johnny Miller, with a chance to come back and get another shot , you We are looking at the leaderboard at 18th, where Dave Stockton finished second yesterday and finished two shots behind Gary Player in the 1974 Masters and will go to 15th. Bobby Nichols at the top of the hill examines the great shot he has for play. in this natural amphitheater and this is the ultimate test of character in the world golf championship. Those who have a little liquid on their knees at this point usually take an iron club and put nickels in without coming out of it with a 6-under par. the nerves are strained in the stretch here is his second shot on the 15th to the only bunker in this entire return to the 13th where Weiskopf visited the green and returned to his ball now it is there in two with a lot of green to work with a little force just on the edge of the pudding circus surface, Weisskopf, there in three, but keep in mind that the man he's playing with, Johnny Miller, has a chance for an eagle.
He is 8 under par if he could make this putt. He would be just one behind Nicklaus of 14 where Tom Watson has put his drive to the right. He is hitting a 7 iron. He shouldn't have any difficulties. He has a clear path to this green Brahmas. Approaching this pin. Roland we won't make it. uphill and Tom Watson will likely be down about 45 feet from the hole back to 13 johnmiller putting for Eagle out of line like many players have been up there, but Miller only has about two feet left for a birdie back to 14 Jack Nicklaus in the middle of the fairway, a beautiful drive, almost where he was yesterday when he hit an 8 ironcompletely over the green in the gallery, the leader at the moment, Jack Nicklaus on the second shot of the 14th fairway, and today he hit a 9 iron here and he will also be down and off the edge here on a 14th green and not very happy with that shot possibly 55 feet away back to 13 Weiskopf right on the edge of the putting surface and just below us that's for birdie.
I would put it. again in a tie not broken it is not an easy putt Weisskopf recovers by any means of 15 Bobby Nichols from the bunker on the hole all downhill from here beautiful shot so a chance to get to 7 under par but only to four shots off the lead with Nicolas looking in trouble until the 13th, which is for birdie for Johnny Miller that would put him at 9 under par and to back Nicklaus up when he got it, the United States took a club that Weiskopf will now put for the fair pair. one behind Nicholas Miller, only two behind now, but remember that at 14 Jack Nicklaus has problems.
I'm so careful, why does he make fun? What a car collar on the 14 on the right side of your photo, let's go there with a putter from the sideline, it's going to be terrible. strong and we'll have trouble making par when he goes off the green on the other side and maybe we're about to have another tie in this 1975 Masters. There's his shot. It's about four feet from the playing surface, about another 12 feet from the Hole, let's go to 15 Bobby Nickels for the birdie that will put him at 7 under par on The 15th hole wouldn't be costly to miss if Nichols had any chance of catching the leaders to 14.
This is Tom Watson, almost the same place Nicolas was in a moment ago and he certainly should have learned from Jack's attempt. This is much better. has a foot and a half for this par to relay 6 under par on the tee here at 14 John Miller hot in the test hit the tree on the left side and fell may or may not be bad half an hour ago Alan Miller from there expects an eagle Tom Weiskopf well it's about whether he knows it or not he has a good chance of regaining some of the lead there's Nicholas on the green now he's ready for his fourth shot Tommy likes it and DD's shirt up on the green now jack nicklaus and this is for par Jack Nicklaus will make a bogey here and for the moment the Masters will be tied between why make fun of Nicolas this has been a difficult hole this little bridge between the two par 5 31 bogeys to 13 birdies before today's round and this will be the eighth bogey of only two birdies today bogi fire for Jack Nicklaus falls to 10 under par now tied with Tyler why stop behind him in the fairway?
Miss Tom Watson marks her ball to about a foot and a half. for his par to remain 6 under par four strokes behind the leader, the wonderful tournament for young Tom Watson yes, Tom Watson par 4 14 remains 604 strokes behind the two leaders Nicklaus and weisskopf as we reach 16th in the time of evaluation to see Bobby Nichols TG He goes up 600 on the stretch on the last hole and that's way to the right, he bounces off the bench where the spectators sit and he's not happy with it so 18 Jean Littler gets out of the 18 Jean, who knows all about the pressure at the Masters.
That may take too many memories to remember 1970 racked up his by Billy Casper in a playoff with Jean Butler and this great gallery that sounds on the 18th now playing on the school board, some of the biggest noises we've had came while the green It was completely empty. While people were just looking at the leaderboard and seeing the birdie or bogey call, the position change gene allowed Luther to start the day, it was even over Eddie has had some problems with this holy bogey, yesterday Hubert Green with him has two less for the tournament. 1 under par for the day will be back to 14 and a 14 that Johnny Miller just watched from the top of the hill when it looks like he has a clear shot just one shot behind leaders Johnny Miller now and this is where he has to go with a flagpole today behind, in the most difficult place, what it does is reduce this green by almost two-thirds inwards to have a real chance of making a birdie.
He hit another tree and dropped when Johnny Miller finds difficulty here in this annoying. Hole 14 on 15 Jack Nicklaus after those strange three putts on 14 back to 14 Weisskopf second shot the co-leader and has made a magnificent shot here on 14 and may well take the lead as the swing comes here on the 14, so right now in the final round of the Masters the leaders are Tom Weiskopf and Jack Nicklaus at 10 under par, it's time to get goosebumps on the old plantation Tom Weiskopf and Jack Nicklaus are tied at 10 under par and the 14th hole has certainly had its share of attention Johnny Miller is 9 under par for the day's 4 under par tournament, so he is just one behind co-leaders Weiskopf and Nicolas, let's go to 16 and 16 Arnold Palmer, very long driver Aberdeen, let's hope she gets him on the day is well beating about 40 people in the old Arnold Palmer, who as always receives a special ovation as he walks along the lake, reaching this week although 1 under par, so we'll go back to 15 where Niklas Ponder is with those extraordinary three.
Putts on the 14th green often take a toll on your chances here when all you need to get to the green on that 14th is the wedge shot that doesn't play as well as most of the other great shots in that big bag. your Johnny Miller just hit the flagpole with his third shot and it lands two feet from the hole Johnny Miller in trouble and his drive in trouble on a second shot and there's his ball like a hipster flagpole on the second bounce and he lands two feet away, he'll save his par twice and in the meantime five and a half feet away with a chance to take the lead as we now go to 16.
Yes, it's time to see Bobby Nichols again and he made a very good throw. that inside six feet and he's like not there, he's left at 6 under par when he leaves the 16th and a 15 a nod while Nicklaus Ponder makes just a breath of wind now the flag is completely limp at the top of the flagpole and from there it is approximately 220 yards to the front edge of the green, another 37 feet or 12 yards to the hole and here comes Nicholas with one of the most vital shots of his distinguished career. Oh my God, he almost went in the hole! wonderful golf shot back to the 14th where Tom Weiskopf is now up for this birdie attempt which would give him the lead for the moment five and a half feet for birdie three, so leader for the moment my Scapa goes to 11 under par with a brilliant birdie here on 14 Jack Nicklaus up to 15 now John Miller to 14 like this two and a half feet to save par and after hitting the flagpole with his third shot yes sir up to four, he's 9 under par Nicklaus 10 under par Weiskopf 11 under par, let's go now to 15 well, there will be a standing ovation, I'm sure it should certainly be a majestic violence that has just been reeled off by Nicolas' feet in the stands slowly climbing to a university one of the breaks a very good chance of a bad with really took the pressure, there's the shot of the ball again, let's move on to massively test his long iron collar and now the warm hands of Tom Watson and here's his second shot a few moments and there it is and Tom Watson will throw first on the slope. but he will return to the tee with Tom Weiskopf, who has just taken the lead, a gloriously rhythmic athletic figure right in the middle, and with him, Johnny Miller Weisskopf, 11 under par, Nicklaus with the possibility of going from 10 to 12 under par with a eagle putt and Johnny Miller. here at 9 under par Wow almost fell over and right down the middle - wonderful drive and just past teammate Weiskopf back to the green Tommy Watson, who has birdied this hole the previous three days with his Eagle, is at 6 under par Having started at 4 under par, I walk in and look out the side door as it goes by, but I have a chance to birdie the hole for the fourth day in a row, which is a unique performance in this year's tournament. 16th and an anti Pat of Billy Casper in the same position as him.
I saw Arnold Palmer a moment ago at about 40 feet and the same result, very good, the patent holder, Vinick, has made three, is 5 under par and staying there, which means that 15 no man alive has lasted so many of these vital putts when he needed it most. Do it Jack Nicklaus, can he do it now? The cut is a bit uphill. The entire set in a small crown. This for the eagle that will take Nicklaus back from a one-shot deficit to a one-shot leader. The water is still as if even they were. Fearing to cause a stir, it wasn't to be, but with his wife's policeman watching from the top of the hill, Nicholas hits and once again his tie for the lead at 11 under par to the 16th and here at the 16th is Lee Trevino from just behind the green chip, Salty's holds it, many are crucial chances, but not today and we return to 15 for Tom Watson's attempt for his fourth consecutive birdie of the tournament and a total of 7 under par cruel break to the right, so Watson is still tied at 6 under par with Hale Irwin, who is already finished, who is the record he cleared in the round of 64 and with Bobby Nichols now in sixteenth and it's time to look like he won't miss and take the lead on this last of the par three holes there will be 2 under par from free under those fifteen back to the top of the hill on the 15th hole this par five of five hundred and twenty yards and now is the time to refresh yourself, have courage as Weiskopf goes around the green with the longest leaning back now, that will be the hardest shot you can think of if you missed the green and stayed out of the water because you only have about twenty feet of green to work on, no interesting client, Johnny Miller. at 9 under par, he is gesturing for the ball to go to the left, he has been quite obedient, so he has the possibility of scoring a knee goal that would tie him for the lead Johnny Miller in the 15th back to the 16th , yeah, on the tee looking out from behind a familiar picture and how dead Jack Nicklaus came here made everything he said to Georgia Pines not a shake on the flag or a shake in the water, let him down, leaves him to the At least 40 feet short and to the left along a slope to go up instead of let down, the Jack Nicklaus flag is right at the top right, next to the left edge of that big bunker, so there's no let down in the last hole, but yes a heroic ground, I think by Tom Watson in these circumstances, oh well, now there is a book that I see from here, whether in the sand or in the water, I am sure that at this point in the round At the end of the Masters there are two couples that accumulate at eleven in the car, the gallery on the 18th waits nervously for the three contenders in all honesty, something like an army ready for battle, you can see them agitate and, at the same time, be great for a few moments of respite before the tension and the storm of emotions come over you, so we still have that moment and let's go back to 15 Tom Weiskopf with a very difficult little chip, he has very little room to work on the green, he could possibly bouncing him off the sideline, well if he had responded on the sideline it would have taken a lot of speed and now why? he scoffs at the birdie putt, but Johnny Miller has this eagle putt, of course, to join co-leaders Tom Weiskopf and Jack Nicklaus.
He comes downhill pretty hard and three putts from this area have not been unheard of today. The rhythm of taking the ball. downhill rather than dying as it approaches the hole, this glorious scene bathed in pale afternoon sunlight that has been much brighter earlier in the day, the perfect day for one of the most intriguing and exciting finishes that one could invent if he were the best. The author of the sale goes back to the 16th, where now there is a curious situation here, Tom, who was barely in the water but had to choose, returned to what they call the drop area, which is the T at the bottom , and he falls over here and So that's his third shot and it's almost exactly the same spot again, whether it's in the water or not, we can't see it, but I think it is and he'll have to play another one and this one will be a big tragedy of five for what comes back to 15 well I think the players are grateful here on the 15th green for a little respite and a time to recover their nerves back to 16 oh no this is what happens when you play five, his third ball disallowed every time it is the last in the middle and rolls cruelly down a hill.
You can judge the tremendous slope of this green by the result of Nick having to wait all this time, so we're back to the 15th. Well, Johnny Millers had a good amount of time to recover. knowing that this putt he could putt in would give him a share of the lead with Weiskopf and Nicholas, he's given it too much, but a little too firm to take the bar, oh, and that's not exactly what you'd call now either. Another putt totally vital why Scope really hasn't been treated very kindly on this 15th hole this week for six five of his scores here Nicholas has had a very long wait on the 16th hole with Watson having his cruel misfortunes and the atmosphere electric and almost completely silent in the respective greens, but we are at the 15th hole with a wise policeman for the birdie, how tremendouspotpie Tom Weiskopf and nab is going to be evil music ringing in Nicholas' ears as Tom Weiss takes the lead once again upright at 12 under.
Johnny Miller for the birdie is not out of the woods yet, although he is shadowing himself on the hole, which is not a pleasant task, surely and cruelly for Johnny Miller, who moves to 10 under par, so that weisskopf 12 Nicklaus 11 Attend for the 16th. Yes, Nicklaus, you have an uphill putt from 35 to 40 feet. He has been standing for a long time. Well, his playing partner played three tee shots, so to speak, honey, about a hundred yards from where Weiskopf was holding that frying pan and always hiding her face from him. right now, yeah, going up the hill, I think it's one of the best bucks I've ever seen.
I come to feed my things. I have to take it this time, having dealt it in the hole before. I've never seen him so funny. my life now let's take a look at that again it's impossible no so now back on the tee the last two we could have made 18 quickly at 18 as Bobby Nichols approaches the green, the huge gallery has already been through an emotional grinder not having seen the top three yet, but all eyes were on the leaderboard and the first to roar up when he showed that Nicholas was 11 under, another roar about why he makes fun of 12, and then another about 10 under par from Miller, let's go to 16.
I went to the last par, it was a really dramatic 190 yard finish last year. You may remember my reach here hitting the water playing a second ball into the dropping area and going into that coming out with a four, so two of them we're at 12 under par, sorry Berliner but that's terribly short and disappointing, why mock and that could be it if he loses. I think maybe it would be the one who did what he didn't even get to be in the water last year, it's 17. Jack Nicklaus on the tee, the 400 yard par 4, the big tree number 17, the left side of the fairway, At about 165 yards, the crowd apparently liked that the collar had some trouble on this hole and that's a perfect drive right down the middle of the fairway.
He separated all three days but had to leave the green to reach his pars and two of the three days we go to the 18th. A dramatic moment here. Bobby Nichols and Arnold Palmer approach the green and Arnold Palmer's perhaps greatest son stands up. When he returned listening to the roar of the crowd, he looked up at the leaderboard, saw Nicklaus and why he stopped tied at 12 under par and Johnny Miller missing at 10 under par and Arne just nodded as if to say yes, that's how he figured He then recognized the crowd and both he and Bobby Nichols were now trying to make their birdie putts.
Arnold started the day at 1 under par, that's where he is now and let's go to 16 a moment or two ago, this is Ronnie Miller, now he'll do his thing. tee shot 16 and if we look to the left of the flag we will see it, it is 35 feet, but Johnny Miller is all very feminine, but it depended more on life, he is short, he is longer, so at this moment in the final round. of the Masters the leaders are Nicolas and vest in Arnold Palmer -12 under par trying for a birdie putt you don't need a memory to remember when he made birdie 18 in 1960 to be Ken Venturi by one but that was in 1960 so Arnold Palmer misses his birdie and leaves his ball beyond the hole by about a foot.
I guess this wouldn't be disappointing. This would be pre-climatic because the kings have not yet taken the field dead, even Tom Weiskopf and Jack Nicklaus. Johnny Miller trying to crash into Arnold Palmer concluding. the ground 1 under par for the day, well now we do this about 45 yards from Weiskopf, just before the green and the flag just at the hip, behind the green, in the upper right, it has to go up a slope that increases gradually and begins to rise. about 18 feet away 217 Jack Nicholas ready for his second shot directly into the face of the grain the pin to the golfer's right but very deep just 14 feet from the back edge a bank on that edge that is not a bad shot at all would be a tough putt for a birdie opportunity is about 15 feet or so below the glass meanwhile back on the 16th and here is Johnny Miller about 35 feet also up a slope, a very finely struck putt and a great result.
I'm going to go to 18. Bobby Nichols just included in his round Bobby 3 under par for the day he finished 6 under par for the tournament and that would tie him with Hale Irwin remembers with all the headlines and all the stories Kahler when he just equaled a course record of 64 and also of course record of eight birdies Billy Casper a former Masters champion off the tee on a dogleg of 18 420 yards correct and his approach approaching the undulating two-tiered green hears Billy Casper and now Lee Trevino the gallery comes from everywhere now at 18 would like to see Trevino and Casper what they want with all their heart and soul now is to see why they spawn and Miller and Nicklaus and let's see why we stop and we'll go to 16 and here it is the result of that long approach shot up the hill rolled about 18 feet if you hold this one we are one of the bravest pups.
I have in her life, not a bad time, but never up, never and it's a Weiskopf four-four and she falls one behind Johnny Miller, just this touch for the par three to stay well done and that's the end of the 16. today in the playoff to score 17 Tom Watson looking over his putt his second shot on the right edge of the green which is 27 feet from the cup to the edge of the green meanwhile on the 18th a standing ovation for Lee Trevino and Billy Casper Billy Casper has played very well at 3 under par for the day and 5 under par for the tournament, a Masters champion who if he could make a long birdie putt would tie Bobby Nichols at Hale Irwin at 6 under par for the tournament.
Lee Trevino started at 1-under par. low for today and he is 2 under par and it will be Billy Casper, we have a moment before we move on to the excitement, let's jump to 17 Watson from just under 30 feet for a birdie, always the good trip, it's a foot away and Nicholas I saw it now Jack did his own homework as Watson moved forward with the ball and now the crowd rises and Nicholas is looking straight at the leaderboard on the other side of the way he can see or will be able to see in a moment the posted bogey by Tom.
Weiskopf at 16 I don't think he's seen it yet, but the murmur has spread through the crowd. This is a pretty difficult putt. It will be uphill. It will bend slightly to your right. Meanwhile, back on the tee, 400 yards away, Johnny Miller just got a couple of shots off the lead, but running out of holes he escapes the tree and jumps down the left side and has a good position on the green. . Nicholas almost ready. The odd caller was in the 17th of the final round last year in which Gary Player more or less iced the The 1974 masters with a sensational second shot had a one-touch chance here for Jack Nicklaus for his self.
It is at this stage of the work, why stop at the 18th hole to play? Let's go there. Lee Trevino made a birdie putt and ran it in. much to the disappointment of the gallery, so it's there at three if it goes back to 17, a very dejected Tom Watson getting his prize, but obviously thinking about what happened to him, it's 60 when he passed seven and so on right now in the final round of the Masters the leader is Jack Nicklaus with par 12 under par Jack Nicklaus coming off the 18th tee this dogleg par four of 420 yards to the right is well positioned the collar on this hole divided twice and bogey at the same time Tom Watson has two pars in a bogey on this hole, in fact, among the trio fighting for the lead there has only been one birdie and that was Weiskopf yesterday.
Tom Watson 200 for the tournament started today at 4 under par and leaves it there and Tom rolls into the bunkers that were placed. there for the 67 Masters and so, as they move towards their approach shot, the enormous gallery emerges from all the other holes now like a great Christmas ribbon that has been dragged through the trees. Billy Casper finished off Casper's putt the last time we saw him. finished five under par for the tournament Lee Treviño finished 2 under par, so Billy was just one behind Hale Irwin and Bobby Nichols, who were six under par. Here was Treviño's putt and he made it for par.
He finished the tournament two under par, 1 under par. day now we go to 17 Johnny Miller looking at his second shot, he hit his tee shot fired on the left side, he's in a great position, it's coming right into a corner, that bunker in front of the grain will be in play here, he's obviously having a little indecision about club selection, the wind has died down almost completely at this point, you are about 110 yards and then on the far right of the green or, on a fairly steep embankment, if you miss it, you have about 50 feet of green to working between the bunkers and the flagpole he's two shots behind leader Jack Nicklaus with two holes left oh he's coming right in the club look at this look at this hole he had stopped a little but he's got a good birdie chance here without 10 feet Tom Weiskopf left the middle portion of the fairway in excellent shape for his second shot as well.
You see what he has in front of him and he knows he needs to birdie one of the last two holes, a little to the right of the club. He looks pretty good. It looks pretty good. a little long but you have a chance in that very large gallery that completely surrounds the par 4 17th, let's go to the final hole Jack Nicklaus Friday from a similar spot on the 18th fairway hit one of his bad shots and rolled down the left side of the green and he bogeyed the hole, but Nicholas was there just to line him up before we got to the tension.
Nicholas not only won at Masters, but he finished in the top five nine times and thirteen Masters. Tom Weiskopf finished second three times here. and Johnny Miller's best performance in 1971 tied with Nicklaus for second place two behind Charles Kuti here is the shot that Jack Nicklaus has in these dogleg bunkers to the left and right of the green a famous finishing hole the left bunker in 1957 Doug Ford holed out to beat Sam Snead and it's one of the most dramatic walks in golf. Niclas leads by one on the 18th hole. You can listen to the comments from the gallery.
He does well between the traps. Magnificent approach for Jack Nicklaus and he is in birdie country. Jack makes That Great Uphill Walk on the 18th, perhaps the greatest and most emotional walk was in 1967, when Ben Hogan, weary and weary, shot a 66 and climbed the 18th. Tom Watson (low for the tournament) finished the day in which Watson made a similar shot. on the green the other day and returns to double up approach shots, young Tom Watson 2 under and Jack Nicklaus, the leader at 12 under par, advancing to the 18th green, what a day Hale Irwin, a record 64 Kataya, eight birdies to tie a record.
Nicklaus started the day strong and at one point he was behind Weisbach coming out and at the back he got into a fight again and passed again and Niklas advances to 18th and he should be alone and it's a standing ovation crowd, come on to 17. here's the big putt for Tom Weiskopf from 15 feet away, a birdie that would tie him with Nikolas for the lead. Oh, if that hits him hard enough, he'll have a foot left for him, which will keep him at 11 under par for the tournament and one shot behind the leader tommy finished second three times he was two shots back in 1972 three shots back again a shot back in 1969 is his par four that had won the hole to try to catch Jack Nicklaus, which is a birdie position on the 18th now keep in mind that Johnny Miller is still in the picture this putt, let's call it about 15 feet, would put Miller one shot off the lead, of course, one hole left, it's a shame that Miller, as Nicolás can see, at 18 years old, can't play the entire Masters on the front nine.
Aires had 11 birdies in the last two days among the front nine here at Augusta National, he said that today he put it at 6 under par and read the brake, seen for a moment on the scoreboard. on the 18th, the birdie will be for John Miller, which ties him with Weisskopf for second place at 11 under par, just one shot behind Miller, making incredible ground in the last 36 holes of the Masters. Here it is again and look how he lifted that. break from left to right perfectly we go to the final hole Tom Watson the long downhill putt 2 under par for the tournament I'm watching those cuties in this gallery roaring at the noise imagine Johnny Miller suddenly caught Tom Weiskopf at 11 under par and even Jack Nicklaus before he went to line up his, but he looked up at the leaderboard and at the other end of the tee is Johnny Miller, one behind Nicolas' crowd, talking to the ball and telling it to fade away and in a position perfect bordering the edge of the field. bunker Jack Nicklaus so far on this hole two pars and a bogey 420 yards away Tom Weiskopf and one shot away the wise gob who has been using a 1 iron actually rolled the dice and headed towards driver Jack Nicklaus leading by one looking at a birdie putt and it will not be Nicholas who is now far from this enormous gallery, one thing will be an elusive emerging birdie on the 18th and that is why at this moment in the third round of the Masters the leader is Jack Nicklaus with 12 under par. par, so four days of golfmagnificent have been reduced to this: we will see another birdie.
The 18th hole here at Augusta played very easy today compared to the other three rounds. In the previous three rounds we only had nine birdies, three a day today. We have already had eight. Will we see the night when Johnny Miller needs a birdie to tie Nicklaus with Tom Weiskopf, at 12 under par, with a tremendous Drive, the biggest Drive in four days? A birdie is needed here to tie Nicklaus. Johnny Miller, a perfect drive away from the bunker. good opening between the left and right bunker, the pin or flagpole is about 21 feet into the green, so he's fought this far and it's up to Johnny Miller and he's going for that area, but the way he's been playing bird is certainly a possibility, okay, he has a chance to tie and now Tom Weiskopf Tom, in four days, beat everyone on this hole, walking right now to find out how far he has to go, Tom Weiskopf is a shot of need from Jack Nicklaus tied for second with Johnny Miller and Miller on board with a chance to make birdie to tie a 420 yard hole and will probably be within wedge distance looking at the drawn card if he goes to the corral that He left 21 feet to stay below the hole and clear. the bunker, his birdie yesterday came from 17 feet to the right of the hole, the horse race is placed about two feet in front of the flagpole inside Johnny Miller, so they are both alive, they are both still over the water, one or both make a birdie putt and we have a Take another look at Tom Weiskopf after a tremendous Drive with this magnificent approach before the putt, he passed it and then went down the slope and this gallery that has roared at the numbers does not can wait to finish and so at this moment in the third round of the Masters the leader by one is Jack Nicklaus well, it's white knuckle time on the 18th green here at the historic Augusta National Golf Club the situation is almost too simplified Jack Nicklaus is 12 under par and leads his pursuers by one the Johnny Miller green about 15 feet away and a downhill putt the same for Weiss cutting about eight feet away if either of them makes it ties Nicklaus If they both make it we have a three-way tie and if they both miss Jack Nicklaus then he will have been the first man in history to win five Masters, so it's that simple, the role of the punt and a birdie flew away, like that that Johnny Miller, a brave effort-killer who was 5 under par at the start of the day, played 6 under par. so far here and now there is one last shot left in the arsenal and it belongs to Tom Weiskopf Tom, bridesmaid three times for the first time in her life, led yesterday in a round at the Masters Tommy, why make fun of eight feet a tie and a reminder?
At the end of the game we will have the winners in the trophy room and in the television room, so the anguish and disappointment were registered on Tom Weiskopf's face and on the lips of those who cheered him for four days and greeted the winners. Jack Nicklaus wins his fifth Masters in a green coat Tom Weiskopf and Jack Miller are not done here yet one more look at the heartbreak at Augusta skated just to the right of Tom Weiskopf who started the day at 9 under par trying to determine 2 under par for the 11th under par for second place in the tournament once again and this time I might even have to share that moment of disappointment with Johnny Miller Miller 6 under par for the day, well Johnny Miller and Tom Weiskopf frustrated by failing to fit birdies into their pars finish 11 under par one behind champion Jack Nicklaus what Oh hoarsely Johnny Miller in 1971 was tied for second place with Jack Nicklaus 2 under par behind Charles Rudy will return with the presentation of the symbolic green jacket of the Masters championship in just a moment and thus the 1975 Masters Tournament came to its conclusion a delight an emotion for Jack Nicklaus a heartbreak and a disappointment for Tom Weiskopf and for Johnny Miller there was a touch another emotion added today Hale Irwin tied records by shooting a 64 and tying a record of eight birdies held up by a wall of art and this estimated crowd of about 40,000 people who saw it all today some Eagles some birdies a magnificent comeback game so Tom Weiskopf started the day 9 under and watched Jack Nicklaus make bogey on the first hole to go 7 under and back off, scoff and then Nicklaus, coming back with a roar, suddenly made three birdies to get to 10 under and then by the time he made birdie number nine, he had Weiskopf trapped, so they were tied on 11 under par.
Johnny Miller got to nine under par and Nicklaus stayed at 11 under par until the 14th, when he fell back to 10. Weiskopf got to 12 and for a moment it looked like Tom Weiskopf was finally going to get what he values and desires so much, but it wasn't to be. So Nicklaus, starting then from 10 under par, moved to 11 under par with 15, 12 under par with 16 and participated in a wise cop who had gone from 10 to 11 to 12 and then fell back on the heartbreaking 16, where he lost 1 to 11 and fell to second place. The tie with Johnny Miller was an unforgettable day and certainly the 1975 Masters, the 39th in history, will join some of the other classics that began in 1934.
The first name inscribed on the Masters trophy was that of Horton Smith and over the years there have been six exciting playoffs and for a moment, in fact, for several moments today it looked like there could be a seventh playoff, but instead it turned out to be as many imagined when the time came. achieves a victory for Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus breaks a tie he had with Arnold Palmer and Nicklaus is now alone on the top of Mount Olympus if he wants as he wins his fifth Masters before we have the presentation meet our winner see our The champion defender and the amateur winner here are some of the highlights.
Here is the 15th hole and Tom Weiskopf on the 15th is going after a birdie and that put him well on Monday and gave him an advantage over Jack Nicklaus at that time and then Johnny Miller won. who left the group yesterday with six consecutive birdies and had a record 30 in front. Miller started today at 5 under par and when he got to the 15th he was behind a birdie and got it to 10 under par and so on on that hole. At the 15th hole, Weiskopf was the leader, Nicklaus, 12 under par, behind at 11 and Miller at 10, but at the 16th hole, Jack Nicklaus was 11 under par and, watching this monumental birdie putt, Nicholas needed a birdie here to take the lead.
Jack Nicklaus and that's where it happened, he took the lead by one at 12 under par and never relinquished it and now let's go to the winner's circle and Pat Summerall, right, it's a privilege to introduce you to the chairman of the Masters Tournament committee, mr. Clifford Roberts, good afternoon, I only have a very brief comment to make what a trio, what a golf tournament and what a champion and once again it is a great pleasure for me to narrow down my club mate Frank Broyles who does the job of interviewing the main contenders. in the tournament and Frank, if he can take over and do his things for me, I highly recommend Peter.
Thank my Lord. cliff and I just want to echo those same comments: I think it was the best day we have ever seen in the history of golf and congratulations to three of the greatest players of all time for our best amateurs participating in the Masters as a feature I think it adds great interest and enjoyment to golf fans and we always honor the shortest Matoo of the year and this year it's George Burns from Long Island. We are very proud to have you, George, and congratulations on a great gentleman, thank you very much, coach. I appreciate being here.
I'm sure all the fans are delighted to have been here and to have received such great acceptance from the Masters committee and all the people here. Thank you, thank you for those kind comments and for our golf fans. I believe you are the current North South champion and you have also been the Canadian amateur champion. I think two years ago we hoped to have you back next year. Thanks Johnny, what a comeback, the last two days of golf are fantastic. that's probably been played Ellen golf history 1:31 I think Jack mentioned it and the last two days and from the day you first after your first day in the press tent you said you hoped you made the cut I think you did good.
I was trying. to let him know that he was the way he was. I started three over par after four holes the first day and that's no way to start a golf tournament, but I stuck with it and finally got it going yesterday and these guys are tough guys to learn and I kept struggling and I didn't expect make the putt on 17, but it was a real thrill for me to be here and also have a great thrill to have a putt. the last hole to tie or win a golf tournament and I can't imagine how exciting it was and I will never forget it.
Well, you played in the first of the first round on Saturday, you set the record with a 30 and I think you said in the press tent that when you get it going early on this course it inspires you and that's about what happened, yeah, in The last two rounds I got him going early in the round and he was playing very well for me off the tee. to green and now I'm happy I did so well. I really congratulate Jack Nicklaus. He has a super decisive putt, he got to 16th and I think that made the tournament for him, of course, a lot of other great shots. but well, you don't have to say that he is a great champion, but he is and I admire him and he is a great player and I also congratulate Tom because I know how he feels right now.
I think he's had three seconds. I've had two seconds and second best and a third, although I have to say that and I'm happy to have done so well. John, there is no doubt that America's young daughters are the idol and they can identify with you. and more than this, we are very proud of the kind of person you are in the leadership that you are providing today to all young people across America. Congratulations and we'll see you here next year. Thanks tom. I don't know what to say. I mean, I know why the comments over the last two or three years have been a little disappointing, but you had a great race and played tremendous golf all week.
Well, thank you Frank, Mr. Roberts, it is a tremendous pleasure for me to be able to compete in what I believe is one of the greatest spectacles in all of sports. There is an atmosphere here comparable to the sun. I know one thing and I believe that one day I will win this golf tournament. My coat will be custom made, but Jack plays very well. I can't criticize my game. I only made a couple of bad shots and was a little unlucky in the second round on the 13th and 15th, but that's part of the game.
Adversity happens to everyone. us and he's the guy who can overcome adversity and that's the true champion, luck plays a bit of a role in the game but you can't say that someone is luckier than the other so I'll come back to it below. year to come back and compete I don't like finishing second but believe me, I tried as hard as I could 14th looked like it was going to be the key hole. I appreciate you describing it to us. You play well there, the 14th hole. 13 After powering that hole and it's accessible, I got a little discouraged, but I thought we had a lot of holes left and I made a good drive and played an 8 iron about 6 feet to the left of the hole and I made the putt and that really got me back into things.
I think we're going to have the putt on 18. Describe it if you want, Tom. Well, I had seen Jones' putt. I'm almost along the same lines and yours broke very quickly. to the left and I probably had an 8 foot putt there and I thought I was going to hit it, I'm just trying to hit it firmly on the top edge of the hole to improve the break, maybe I pushed it, I don't know if I would. I would like to wash, but I felt like I petted him well and it seems like he never came back, but you know, you ask a lot of questions or you think maybe that's how it goes well.
You've had a lot of fun golfing. a great ambassador of golf not only in the United States but throughout the world. We hope to have you again next year. Thank you for the man I finished the second women's race who already won today and you said that you are a trainee. There is no doubt about it. that but you had a great tournament thank you jack what can we say fifth masters great day thank you congratulations thank you very much you know obviously I was delighted and I really wanted to win this tournament I know I said it at the beginning of the week I wasn't with the press, do you know two guys who I felt like she probably has the most talent in the game today and they are the two guys that are going to dominate this game as time goes on, Johnny and Tom, and it turned out that Johnny got a bad start and then he started coming and I didn't really think anyone could play this golf course the way he played it the last two days to get back into contention.
He just played fantastic golf and of course Tom is Tom. his problems last year and I found out that he was back to his game at Heritage and he told me Sunday night at Heritage after we finished the semester, he says I have to go to the greens, bruises, I think I can win a tournament that I had to go into a gastro winter and he just ran and won the tournament and came back and I knew he was ready and playing well and of course after yesterday after I lost my lead and Tom got ahead I knew he was going to It's going to be a tough day, but I've been here before, I've been in that position before and I felt like I justplay some good solid golf and see what happens.
I continued to play good solid golf, but not just a good solid start, but I played really good golf and kept making birdies, but these guys kept making them right behind me too and you know, I don't think I've ever been involved in all the years in a played golf and I guess this is about I don't know 15 on the tour. Now that I think there has been a more exciting day of golf, I don't think there ever has been, at least since I participated. I think Tommy and John would probably feel the same way, of course, obviously I'm the winner, it's easier for me.
To say I enjoyed it but any of the three of us could have won and that's the fun of the game, you know, people say what about the pressure that comes from the 18th hole, my God, that's the fun of it all. the game? it's fun to have that putt at 18 very fun Johnny this Johnny said it's fun to have that putt and they will win their tournaments they will win their masters these guys will win several of them let's just look in a minute at the putt on 16 but first tell us some fifty and that is such an exciting hole for everyone and you had a tremendous second shot what club did you use and what was your strategy there well 59 I didn't catch all of my drive I hit it decently, but I cut the novel a little on the tee shot, the crazy left left me with about 240 245 yards to the hole, I was close to that first little nob and when I was defending I had a little bit of wind in my face and I really didn't want to hit with the wind in my face because I had actually been going for most of the day and I fiddled around for a couple of minutes to get that wind of change. and finally he did a little.
I hit an iron and I knew I had to hit everything and I have to say I think it's maybe the best iron I've ever hit in my life or one that good. iron like I've never hit and I guess it almost went into the hole and I was, you know, I've had trouble with the 15 the last few years and I hit my sevens and my helps and stuff, but that was really my key to the term was. not making a mistake on any of the par 5s this week, where I never made bogey on the par three either, so those two things were key and of course on that shot there I had a bad putt, but I was so happy to get there to the green, well, we saw you look on the 16th green when you were there waiting and you heard the applause for Johnny's birdie on the hole and how much did you watch what you were doing?
You were playing. What we have ahead of us is that it is a very difficult day to play, no, I think Vantage is behind, really Frank, you can say that there are advantages both ways, yes, you can put the score on the board and let it shoot, or also You can be behind and you know what you are doing. I have to do it, there are advantages both ways, but I saw Tom hit his pitch at 15. I know he didn't hit the pitch the way I wanted to hear and the Bible always reminded me to my 810 feet about 12 and 12 feet and then I I heard do. his putt, but I never heard that I knew Johnny had a putt for Eagle, you know about 12 15 feet for Eagle, right?
Yeah, you just know it's uh, I didn't hear any reaction to that, but I saw him make the birdie and I said why the new tyloo is a shot behind Tom and it was really funny when I stood over my putt on 16, there I could do something and I made the putt close to 40 feet and drop, but I had to feel it and I could do it and I hit the damn thing and went right in and knew what I was going to do as far as the breakers. I just saw Tom Watson make the putt and obviously that was the tournament you played in and then you two went in 17 18 with the one shot lead I think you finally realized that Tom had made a bogey in Madden 16 I thought Tom was in a bogey 16 because of the reactions I was going up 17 and I had a good drive on 17 and I played a 9 iron I wonder if I didn't want to take any chance of passing the green I put it about 25 feet before the hole I hit a pretty good putt and 18 I played 3 wood off the tee got a good shot hit a good second shot hit a little just try to take a little 6 iron and just hit it on the green.
Howard Tom brought out a little pitching wedge and of course I hit it about, I guess he was 10 11 feet, yeah, and I played my putt. I must have played a break foot. I must have done it. broke 18 inches and I knew it was going to break a lot, but I knew I could finish the tournament and finish it right there, but I just couldn't get on the podium, that's how Mr. Robert said and you have repeated that it was one of the best golf days. I guess we've had a week for golf fans across the country.
I'm sure Frank, that's funny, that's funny, that's the name of yeah. is the name of the game, it's fun, I want to tell you how much Jack, the fans enjoy your great game, but we're also very proud that you're such a kind winner and such a kind person, and we're obviously very proud of that. Also thank you, it is customary at this time for defending champion Gary Player to present you with your fifth green coat. I think we know your smothered side, huh, you got it. We didn't have time to suffocate everyone. Megabyte Megan birdies Jack, congratulations again, I hope this one. fits, this was good, man, they cut me a watch there.
Thanks Jerry, it's a little different than the first one. Well done, okay, thank you very much Tom, I want to press the meat again. Okay, thank you, thank you very much, gentlemen, let's go back down. to Vin Scully on his 18th birthday, congratulations, so there's not much else to say here at Augusta National, except perhaps to thank all the wonderful players, thank you for the excitement and excitement, thank you even for the moments of anguish and frustration that was. part of the bigger picture for the 40,000 people who lined its fairways and greens for people all over the country and those particular areas around the world who might have seen it, we firmly and truly believed that they saw golf at its finest and the drama at its maximum expression.
The highest point of this great and wonderful golf course that opened in 1931 and had its first master in 1934 which was won by Horton Smith. His 39th was today and it concluded on a fitting high note. There was a record, a record tied by Hale Irwin that he himself held. eight birdies and shot 64 to tie the course record which was held by Lloyd Mangrum, Jack Nicklaus Morris Bembridge and of course today Hale Irwin and finally it came down to a birdie or no birdie as Nicholas was gone with Weiskopf, 12 under par, by Weiskopf. about 8 feet Miller about 15 each man gallantly making a charge rolling the putt and missing and Jack Nicklaus and his lovely wife Barbara have been here five times as Jack hugs his wife in his green coat and we put the lid on the Masters Tournament of 1975, we were told it was a great tournament, we were told it is a beautiful course, we were not told well enough to challenge Hemingway's writings or name the author to tell you what happened here today, but to use the word unforgettable, I think it will last and now there is nothing left to do but say goodbye and so to Jim Thacker Pat Summerall Ben Wright Jack Whittaker Henry Longhurst and, frankly, Burr, this is Vin Scully, saying see you later from the beautiful Augusta National Golf Club.
