Jul 01, 2024
Hi, I'm John, I'm with you again, it's Saturday, October 14, 2023 and this is a

demo

of a

1962

Honda CB77 Superhawk that I just finished restoring and will be for sale by bringing a trailer, very soon. I wanted to explain some of the unique features of a 62, it's different even from a 63, there are a lot of differences, right off the bat, but first I'll explain to you, you know, this is about the eighth.

superhawk

and about the 26, you know, Honda twin that I restored, I do 160s and super Hawks and 350s and 450s, probably because in the last seven years I've done 26 of them and this is the eighth

superhawk

, but again it's the most Honda old one that I've had that never ran and has some fun little differences, but like all my restoration, you know, the engine was completely disassembled and all the worn parts were inspected, you know, that are too worn, you know. replaced with New Old Stock or a much better conditioned used part, you know, in this case, I think the engine was bored up to U uh, maybe a second oversizing, I think it was, you know, making it basically like a new one.

The engine is brand new, it has a new cam chain and it runs like a top, you know, all the steel parts, the frame, the gas tank and the fenders, they were everything, everything was sandblasted down to, you know, metal bare and then if there are additional cracks or holes that shouldn't be there, they are welded back together and then body filler is used as needed to smooth everything out and then we use house tool or uh highb Construction primer kd3000 se call to get everything perfectly smooth for uh, you know, the 400 grit scratches on the metal fenders and side covers, we went to 600 grit before we put on the base coat, uh, uh The red is a single stage of PPG, it's a very nice match for the Honda scarlet red, the silver is from Honda, uh, it's also PPG, but it's mixed, it's the Honda North America Cloud silver, which is the right color, it's metallic, but not that you know which isn't crazy shiny metal, it's just really nice metal, so, and then let's look at everything else, you know, new chain, all new rubber parts, you know, uh, the kick, uh, you know the kick.

More Interesting Facts About,

1962 honda cb77 superhawk demo and cold start...

Rubber and the footrest rubbers and this little boot on the uh U the uh that's the rear brake switch uh the mufflers are a new reproduction the header pipes are original header pipes that have been rechromed a lot of the most of the chrome on the bike that You'll see it's been re-chromed, you know, the lower parts of the shock, the

start

er lever, the rear brake lever, you know these exhaust pipes, here you know the fork seal brackets, the Fork trim rings, headlight trim ring, everything was rechromed. uh, the front brake remains, the front brake arms, uh, were rechromed, the shifter parts were rechromed, the rear brake arms, uh, rechromed and again, you know, the other shock cover, uh , the panels on the gas tank, of course, were rechromed, um, we have some. uh there's a guy called pops Honda on eBay that makes some really amazing reproductions of some of the original nuts and bolts, you know they're chrome plated and in the right sizes but for the most part I reuse all the nuts and bolts and blow them up with steam.

I remove the rust, sand them smooth if necessary and then zinc check them again, so in most cases all the nuts and bolts were original to the bike. You know, on the engine we have these screws, the case screws. Those are all new and it has the correct mirrors, the speedometer, there is a gentleman in England who made these beautiful, you know, everything is perfectly correct, these faces for the speedometer, so I took the meter apart and lubricated it, and made sure that everything was fine. working uh I think um and then they put this new face on it and um and it's just beautiful it makes it look new so the tires you know the tires have the right sizes and tread pattern so We have a 275 by8 grooved tire.

On the front and rear there's a 30 by 18 uh with a block tread pattern, the rims are, you know, they're new rims and the spokes are new, stainless steel spokes, so let's see, uh, let's talk . a little bit about some of the differences that are uh, uh 62, so one of the most obvious ones is in this, uh, this badge, which is a reproduction badge, but it says dream 300, later you know that in 63 they got rid of of the dream and it only says 300 so down here on the front brake linkage here this arm these arms are held on with self-locking nuts while on the rear ones there is some kind of slot and a cevis and an additional 6mm bolt that goes in and hold the uh, the arm over this knurled fork that comes out of the brake, uh Hub, there, um, let's look underneath, uh, it's very hard to see, but the steering damper parts are a little bit different, they're perfectly round and the last ones are there.
It's kind of a triangular tip piece that sticks out, but anyway, you know it's completely round and doesn't have that little pointy piece sticking out of the side. In fact, inside the forks you can't see it, but the fork tubes are thicker up here and then they get thin again until 33 um, so I think they're like 35 and then they get thin until 33 uh, so this actual lower Triple Tree is different for 62 because it has a 35mm opening for the fork tube to fit in and then later models would have had a 33mm opening so let's see what else this engine has, the oil filter cover is blank later models say Honda um and then on the back here We have um so this swing arm is what's called a lug swing arm.
You have this casting that is welded only to the tubular parts. You know in later versions, you know, everything was just bland. They got to a point in a much simpler arrangement, with fewer parts or less mass, you know, but again we also see the self-locking nuts that hold the brake actuation arms and what is called the hollow shaft, are these first, you know, the first models of '62 and later. is, this is all closed, you know, it's a big solid ax piece, um, also if it's very subtle, but the bottom mold of this crash cevo is different, it has this kind of little pointy line here, while It's much softer. sculpted here on the '62 where it's not on the latter, the '63 and later, another interesting difference is the so-called stubby taillight, you know, the other, the taillight on the '63 would probably come out here, it's just a little bit, it's only it's almost twice as deep as this one, so, but all you know, so you know you have the fender, it's here, we have Honda, you know, a beautifully recovered seat with chrome trim and a strap with buckles. and the Honda logo on the back, let's see, you know all the wires are new, the air filters are new, the spark plug caps, you know, the spark plug wires are new, the chain is new, the tubes, Rim strips, everything that makes running and driving safe for cycling, uh, headlight, you know, everything that works, there's a whole separate video that talks about the electrical part, you know, it shows all of them. the electrical characteristics, um, so let's go ahead and

start

it up, it's

cold

, you know that right now, so let's go ahead, here's the The petcock is on, we're going to put it on reserve because I don't think there's much fuel in the tank right now and then here's our ignition switch, we'll turn it on and press electric start. choke on for a moment there she is in all her glory so like I said this will be on.
There's also a video of me riding this bike, uh, like I said, another video of the electrical features showing that everything is working, so please. be sure to check them out as well and uh the bike will be ready and bringing a trailer probably in the next few weeks so thanks for looking.
