144 Things You Missed™ in The Final Destination (2009)

Jun 06, 2021
The fourth Final Destination begins with a car accident, so as you can imagine, the scene is full of references and Easter eggs hidden in the numerous advertisements plastered on the cars and around the track. The car responsible for the accident was Car 6. Each initial disaster in the previous films referenced hell or the devil. From almost any angle you can see three 6's on the car, representing the Devil's number, and the hellfire decals represent the burning hell. This car has several advertisements, including Brand X, the same brand of vehicle that would eventually eliminate Mechanic Andy. There is also a Brand X racing poster in the security guards office.

There are a lot of X's in this movie. Goth stylist Deedee has an X tattoo on her arm, main character Nick has an XBOX, and characters Hunt and Janet are ex-boyfriends. The recurring X's may be an homage to the special effects company that did most of the effects in this film. Another decal seen on this car and many of the others is this one, for Heck Race Shifts, created by Ryan Heck, the assistant art director. There's also a Heck Race Shifts sign where we see his motto: "Performance, put it into gear." Later, Nick has a premonition that his girlfriend Lori is crushed by the gears of an escalator.

There is also text on the hood of the car, "Feel the rush," which could be a sign of the violent stampede that left the stadium when the accident first occurred. That's just the first car in the first scene. That's how it is. A lot. More. And I'll cover it all, so stay until the end of this video. Directing duties on Final Destination would be... for some reason... handed back to Final Destination 2 director David R Ellis. And he didn't really innovate much. Last time he brought us the Route 23 pileup, so this time the opener is... another pileup, but this time it's on a race track?

Aside from that, there's definitely a lack of communication about the tone of the franchise between these two directors. Wong's films have some emotional depth to the characters, while Ellis seems completely focused on silly, over-the-top murders. It's easy to understand why. Wong was promoted to the director's chair as a writer, and Ellis' experience was as a stunt coordinator. One thing they did understand between the two of them was that there were a lot of

things

you

missed

. But before we get back to them, this is my last read Raycon ad of the year, so let's go over some of the best moments.

Like when I told you all the reasons why you should buy Raycons. "You'll get six hours of playtime, seamless Bluetooth pairing, more bass, and a more compact design that gives you a comfortable, noise-isolating fit." And that time I told you if they serve as a Christmas gift or not. "They make a great holiday gift because you can use them anytime, anywhere." There are a lot of great Raycon memories and there's about to be an even bigger one. Raycon is being generous for the holidays: right now they're offering all my viewers a 15 percent discount! The first thing you'll hear when you start watching The Final Destination is the song Devour by Shinedown. Unlike previous films, there is no diegetic death omen song, that is, one that the characters can hear. But the lyrics are still somewhat relevant. Like this line: “Crush it, crash it, beat it and smash it. You know they're just toys! There would soon be a lot of bumps and crashes, and later we see a toy version of the main car involved in that accident at the mall, when our characters pass by the Megatech booth. Remember, the race that ended in tragedy was called the Megatech 300.
And that race was held at McKinley Speedway. I pointed out the meaning behind that name and the many locations with the McKinley nickname in my video Final Destination 3. Let's take a look at some of the other cars participating in the race. Most of these appear on various cars or in various places around the stadium, so I'll only mention where I first noticed each one. Red car 71 has a telephone number containing the number 180, a reference to Flight 180 from the first film. The characters are also sitting in Section 180 of the stands. "Tell me again why we chose this instead of watching the movie." They end up watching the movie later.
This is a clue to another of the disasters. Car 51 is a red and white vehicle with many stickers. This one comes from Hanahan SHT Taylor, representing executive producer Sheila Hanahan Taylor. Beck Tires is probably a nod to set designer Jeffrey Beck. JB Dupuy is named after foreman James Dupuy. Hey look. This is me trying to watch this movie. The 45six car is a gray and black vehicle with heavy sponsorship from Bill Wall Leather. This is a clue to the disaster, because we saw Bill Wall Leather in Final Destination 2 wearing a poorly worn Evan Lewis shirt moments before his accident.
Andy is also wearing a Bill Wall t-shirt. This car also has ads for Casey Moore Gasoline, named after production secretary Casey Moore, Bel Castro Performance Ignition after production executive Dana Belcastro, and Barnard Helmets after assistant director Kim Barnard. The pit stop guys have patches that say "Wolf Cams." As I mentioned in the last episode, wolves are a Mongolian sign of good luck. Car 16 is the bubbly blue car with a sticker that simply says Colin Grant, that's the name of the storyboard artist. There's also Vinitsky Synthetic Oil after post-production supervisor Jay Vinitsky, Glatter Tires after supervising production coordinator Emily Glatter, and Lehman somewhat after associate producer Tawny Ellis-Lehman. (She That is one of the director's daughters).
The overall design of this car could be our clue to the accident that almost took Janet's life at the car wash. On the back is an advertisement for Holmberg Industries, named after production manager Erik Holmerg. Car 71 says Matthews on the back. There's a specialist called Eddie Matthews. He's probably the one driving that car. "Is it safe to sit here?" "Of course. There's a fence there. We're fine." *deep breath* I guess it's a good thing this line is at the beginning of the movie, because I still have the energy to listen to stupid

things

like that. So I'm going to let this go.
The trailers offer a couple more connections, such as Holman Exhaust, named after art coordinator Sara Holman, and Dashnaw, named after second unit director Jeffrey Dashnaw. The spilled oil could be a reference to this part of the first film. One of the warning signs is when Nick discovers that they are actually at a memorial event for all the drivers who died. Like the Flight 180 memorial, most of them are named after crew members, with the exception of these five. In the stands I saw a woman wearing a blue, white and red striped dress, reminiscent of the French flag.
We have seen this pattern many times, because the original

final

destination

was supposed to be Paris, France. Other references to Paris in the film include this French-style scooter in the cafe, the very idea of a cafe is French and also a reference to the first film, the image of the Eiffel Tower in Nick's apartment, this advertisement in the dry cleaning is a French flag aside, Lori has this idea about her and Nick's future plans... “A lot of trips like Paris. Maybe some beaches.” And George gets hit by a blue, white, and red striped ambulance, just like Terry Chaney was hit by the bus in the first movie.
He also compares premonitions to the feeling of déjà vu, just as Wendy did in FD3. “No, no, no, not that. It's like deja vu. My wife says deja vu is God's way... The name of the cafe where Nick, Lori, Janet and Hunt like to hang out at is Death by Caffeine, and this is the place where three would eventually meet. Of the four. your destiny. Next door is a tattoo/psychic parlor. Psychics are often referenced in the franchise, as the main character of each film has a psychic premonition about potential danger. Menu items are possible warning signs that Death is coming for them.
The examples I could see were Knockin' on Death's Door Latte, Deadly Espresso Macchiato, Iced Mocha Fatality, Iced Vanilla Demise, Frozen Chai Casualties, Last Exit Truffles (which may be a reference to the road crash in Final Destination 2), River. from Stix Biscuit (a reference to the mythological boundary between our world and hell), Afterlife Muffins and Iced Fudge Ripple (RIP stands for Rest In Peace). The coffee cup logo seen here is also the same logo seen in The Coffee Beanery from Final Destination 1. In both locations someone is hit by a large commercial vehicle. There is also a Hice Pale Ale sticker on the refrigerator, a reference to movies 2 and 3, where these Hice Pale Ale trucks were involved in two of the accidents.
In this case there was a double named Cassidy Hice. I guess stunts run in the Hice family. If you watch the subtitles on television, you'll notice that the news report poses the question: "Are amusement parks going the way of the dinosaurs?" This is probably a response to the accident that took place on the roller coaster, Devil's Flight, in the previous movie, which took place 4 years ago. It's hard to know, but it's possible that this is the same boy who was the operator of the ride. Maybe he's here applying for a new job. In a later scene, there is a framed photo containing an ominous sign: the words: Last Exit.
Nick and Lori go to the memorial for the lives lost on the track. There are pictures of some of the victims, including...apparently the girl in the fire meme. This film continues the tradition of something wildly inappropriate happening at every disaster memorial. This time it's this guy, Carter Daniels, who drops an N-bomb out of nowhere. At least I thought he had come out of nowhere until I went back and realized that he actually had a swastika tattoo in the circuit scene. At the memorial, he wears a necklace. It's actually very similar to Evan Lewis' demon tail necklace in the second, but this one is more of a hook, a clue to his fate that involves him getting stuck on a hook and being dragged down the street by his van.
That night, Nick sees more signs in his dream. In the third, Wendy sees the signs in the photographs of her, but in this one, Nick simply has more premonitions... which is not so creative... But one interesting thing is how the words “It is here” are hidden somewhere in each vision. In Carter's it appears briefly in the fire, in Samantha's it is a dark stain on a hair straightener, in Andy's it is obscured by smoke, in Hunt's it can be seen in the water draining the pool, in that of Janet inside a pipe, in The vision for the victims of the cinema is on fire... again... and for Nick, Lori and Janet the words "it's coming" written on the table are now crossed out because "it's here." Another sign of that night is this photo of Nick and Lori being stabbed by this sword that's just sitting outside, which is actually taken directly from Final Destination 2, but it's much less subtle this time.
The first individual kill is Carter Daniels, who drives while drinking a can of Hice Pale Ale, just like the trucker when we were first introduced to the iconic Hice brand. What is it about this brand that attracts the worst people? The problem for him begins when the horseshoe hanging from his mirror falls and turns on his radio. I talked earlier about how there are horseshoes in most of these movies as a symbol of luck, because in Final Destination there is a big emphasis on luck, chance, and destiny all tied together. Other examples are Hunt's lucky coin that he drops before dying, the die in Carter's locking mechanism, the head of the auto shop who has a shirt with a horseshoe and a shooting star, the lacquer mark for the hair in the salon is Sprinkle Star, and it is shot to dislodge the ceiling fan, the homeless man who throws away a lucky penny, and the movie Lori and Janet go to is in theater 13 (the bad number luck).
The song that plays is “Why can't we be friends?” It almost seems like it's supposed to be a commentary on how Carter's ending is like a punishment for being racist and not being friends with George, however, if that's the case, it doesn't really fit with the other deaths in the series because they all the rest were innocent. I guess the other Carter was some kind of bully, and a lot of the Final Destination 2 characters were on drugs, and Frankie is just disrespectful to women, but even these don't have any kind of lesson learned moment like this.
I find it a little strange that Death takes the time to basically tell him that he should have been better, but then again, he is by far the worst person in the franchise so far. In each episode of Final Destination, I talked about how Deathuses water or liquid in practically all attacks. This movie is perhaps the greatest example. The explosion at the racetrack started with spilled flammable oil, Carter is the victim of a gas tank leak, Samantha asks for a glass of water, “Oh, Deedee? Could you bring me some water? ...causing the aerosol can to slip between the clutches of the hair straightener, the series of events at customs is set in motion with this... ...Janet nearly drowns in a freak accident in a car wash and Hunt is in fact drowned in a freak accident in a swimming pool.
The cowboy is crushed by an overfilled bathtub that falls through the ceiling, and the accident at the movie theater is the result of a larger leak of flammable substance. That concept is really overused. The last three characters appear in a liquor store, and Nick has one of the visions of him next to a Clear Rivers Water bus stop advertisement. Clear Rivers is also the girl from Final Destination 1 and 2. Watch this episode of Horror History for her story and full analysis of her. Speaking of water, I saw a Wild Surf sign at Nick's apartment. Before getting into the movie business, director David R.
Ellis was a junior professional surfer, so this may have been a nod to his past life that literally no one paid attention to. The next sign is when Nick sees the reflection of his ceiling fan in a mirror above the coffee table, a clue about the ceiling fan almost falling on Samantha. The comb and brush tell us that the accident occurs in a hair salon and these rocks represent the stone that the lawnmower accidentally propels into her skull. I also have to highlight this magazine, which deals with topics such as sex, sports, beer, gadgets, clothes, cars and sex.
And also nuclear sex. The next location would be the hair salon, which has a hidden connection to Volée Flight 180. Throughout the Final Destination franchise, I have pointed out several examples of references to hell and demons. The name of the hair salon, Salon Dante, is a reference to Dante's Inferno, the famous 14th century poem that describes Dante Alighieri's journey through hell. The next victim, Samantha Lane, is with her two sons after the soccer game. Her numbers are 20 and 9. Twenty times nine equals 180, the number from Alex Browning's infamous flight. Across the street, a gardener pours fuel into his lawnmower, one of the few fuel cans that doesn't catch on fire in the world of Final Destination.
According to his hat, it appears that he works for Jaymes Tools and Parts, a reference to production designer Jaymes Hinkle. It's not a Final Destination movie without our goth girl, right? I also love how the living room has this large framed photo of a pair of scissors. In case it wasn't very clear that this establishment cuts hair. Another ominous sign is seen when the soccer kids return with Slushees, the same brand that Ashley and Ashlyn had before they became the latest victims of the tanning beds. "I have my eyes on you two." I wish it was the other eye.
This incident appears to be an homage to what happened to Billy Hitchcock in the original Final Destination, where a piece of scrap metal shot out from under the train to decapitate him. I love this guy's reaction though. Yes. Another day at work. Nick soon discovers that Death is one step closer to him when he sees this article. We find out that Samantha Lane, who the credits appropriately list as MILF/Samantha, is actually from Lakeview, which is where the hospital was located in Final Destination 2. There are a lot of bad omens here - the ads at the top are about making her will and estate planning, and related stories deal with other disasters.
The bus crash on HWY 180 refers to both flight number 180 and the crash the following year that took place on a highway. A Ferris Wheel disaster is also mentioned, and it's also not the first one to appear in Things You Missed. This is probably an homage to the amusement park accident in Final Destination 3. The URL for this article contains a 1/08, which is also an anagram of 180. The author of the article is Amy Michelle Akin. I assume she is related to prop master Curtis Akin, who also appears as a golfer at the country club. The article states that the rock was moving at the speed of light.
Yeah, I don't know about that. He also says the lawnmower guy's name is Danny Wall. Not Carl. I guess he was just wearing Carl's shirt or something. Nick and Lori invite their friends over to try to explain what's going on. Hey, is that a Hice Pale…? Oh... Another article tells the story of another accident survivor named Pam Smith. We find out that she once met Brian Gibbons, the son of the farmer who was blown up in the

final

moments of Final Destination 2. A police officer on the scene was rushed to Lakeview Hospital and pronounced dead by Dr.
Ellen Kalarjian, himself. doctor. she who resurrected Kimbery Corman. Nick and Lori do their best to warn them, but Janet and Hunt are unwilling to listen to their theories and head for the exit. "Where are you going?" “I'm going to do what I do best. “I’m going to go get laid.” Wait! Take the magazine! The scene where that happens is probably the most ridiculous scene in the entire franchise. So they're in this closed cabana at a public pool, with little kids walking everywhere. And there are people sitting about a meter away, and the only barrier is this fabric, which is light enough to float in the wind.
And he's literally yelling for us to go faster and stuff. There is no barrier to sound here. But just in case, by some miracle, no one could hear them do it, this girl makes it even more obvious by putting her bikini back on OUTSIDE THE CABIN. Moving on, Janet has a Carver's Cleaners van. I think Carver is kind of a slasher reference. She drives to the car wash to try to clean her windshield, and if you pay attention, there are several clues as to what's going to happen to her. Look at the shape of his car.
It's very square, almost like an aquarium, and behind the wheel are a couple of small fish. She drops her coin into the sewer grate and she can't get through to pick it up. She suffers a similar situation when she cannot escape through the sunroof opening. There's also a rubber duck in front of the passenger seat, just another clue that this tub is going to get full. Anyway, she survives, but she comes out of there looking like that Roblox music video. Her car is picked up by Destiny Towing, the same towing company Nazi Carter worked for. That name, by the way, Fate, indicates the nature of the world of Final Destination where everything is part of Death's design.
Back at the pool, this little boy has a super submersible called a flash flood. I wonder if this is supposed to be a reference to the big storm at the end of the first movie. I already mentioned this when I covered FD2, but in that movie we see a fish caught in the filter at the dentist's office, which is a scaled-down version of what happens to Hunt in the pool. Back at Nick's house, he and Lori are trying to make the place safe and we get a glimpse of his bookshelf. The first post in the stack is Hamlet.
This is technically a sign that (spoiler alert for Hamlet coming out over 400 years ago) everyone dies in the end. However, we pretty much knew as soon as we saw that it's a Final Destination movie, there would be some new surprises in the Final Destination story hidden in the pages of the newspaper. In each episode of Final Destination Things You Missed so far, I've explained how each character's name is an homage to an important person in the horror genre. Unfortunately, in The Final Destination, last names didn't really exist. But if we do a little detective work, using the original script, it seems that at one time the plan was to continue the tradition.
I don't really know most of the filmmakers referenced in this, they're not exactly household names, but I was able to find them and confirm their contributions to the horror genre because I already knew to look for horror filmmakers thanks to the other films. You can look them up if you want to know what they did. Nick's last name was O'Bannon. This was probably a reference to horror writer and director Dan O'Bannon. Lori Milligan is named after Andy Milligan. Janet Cunningham appears to be named after Sean Cunningham. Hunt Wynorski has to go to Jim Wynorski, who made a lot of B movies and horror spoofs.
I know we've seen the wind associated with Death before in this franchise, but usually there's an open window or something. And I like how it goes from a gentle wind towards their faces to this damn gale in the opposite direction, but it's completely aimed at this full coffee cup. The paper and cardboard don't move at all, but the porcelain cup just jumps off the table. Spilled coffee stains this newspaper, making Nick believe it is a message, because only the words “Through action they were saved” remain dry. He then believes that his actions could save George and the rest of them.
But what he should have been paying attention to was the content of this article, about an out-of-control truck that crashed into a store and killed 3 McKinley High School students. This is definitely the cue about the death of Nick, Lori and Janet in the final scene of the movie. Like many others we've met in this episode, they were taken to Lakeview Hospital and, like a couple of previous deaths in the franchise, the driver was under the influence. That host's name was Jason Koffeman, a development executive on the film, and the article was written by Art Schaefer, a co-producer.
The other items don't seem related, but have their own reference Easter eggs for the crew. Thinking they can save George's life, they go to his apartment and enter uninvited. They eventually discover that he has been experiencing the same phenomenon we saw with Eugene in the second film, where he is simply physically unable to commit suicide because it is not his turn. "I've been trying to kill myself all day." But it's okay; When they tell him that they saved Janet, his attitude completely changes and it's all smiles and bursting bottles. I mean, your best friend still died a horrible death a couple hours ago, but you're over it now, right? "I'll bring the cookies." After thinking they have defeated death, Nick and Lori make plans to travel, similar to Alex and Clear's idea when they thought they were safe.
No pun intended. “Are you sure you don't want to come to the movie? Is it in 3D? Oh, what a goal. Nick knows he's not done yet when he throws this book away, revealing yet another sign. To be honest, I'm not sure why he has this book, if it's the same paragraph over and over again. The cowboy dies, so Nick rushes to try to save his friends with the help of George, who also dies. This movie was released in

2009

, so they couldn't have known that 2020 would be the deadliest year since the Holocaust, making the address at which George died even more mysterious.
Meanwhile his girlfriend buys shoes. Wait Lori! Don't forget your flyer for 2 free music! They head to the movie theater, where many of the signs appear to be additional signs of Death. The one on the right is a parody of Saving Private Ryan. The movie the girls are going to see is called Love Lays Dying, which is considered an important sign because Lori is Nick's love interest. The female lead of Love Lays Dying is even named Loretta. Lori is sometimes used as Loretta's nickname. The image on the billboard is an eye, and when Nick sees it in the bus ad, we zoom in on the eye.
The main premonitions of the second film onwards end with the camera moving away from the visionary's eye. One of the other posters is for a movie called The Death Part Two. The font and color scheme are similar to The Final Destination. Remember when I covered Final Destination 2 and pointed out the headline “Hollywood Hops on Flight 180”? My theory is that this could be the sequel to the Hollywood movie Flight 180. There's also an ad on the popcorn container for an upcoming movie called "Till Death Do Us Part." My favorite poster reference is this one, from a sci-fi movie called Zone Z.
The poster is a parody of the '90s sci-fi television series The X-Files, but the connection goes a little further, because the Screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick once created an X-Files script called Flight 180. It was rejected and Reddick later adapted it into a feature film called Final Destination. The theater chain is called Tagert Theatres. According to something I saw on the Final Destination Wiki, it is named after David R. Ellis' daughter, Tagert. Inside the cinema, a series of events unfold exactly like those that led to the disaster at McKinley Speedway. “Down front!” "Sir, move your feet." Can you imagine a movie theater employee interrupting the movie to tell Shane Dawson to move his feet? "LEAVE ME ALONE!!" It took me a little longer to discover the third parallel.
A man's ringtone rings behind Lori. 🎵 Dixieland tone 🎵 ...to which Lori whispers to herself... "Dixieland." After searching for it, I discovered thatIt was a popular Confederate song from the American Civil War. The American Civil War was a war against slavery. Slavery equals racism. The racist guy on the track was sitting in a similar position in relation to Lori as the guy on the ringtone. And if you go back to that scene, she can be heard whistling the same tune. There would be a couple more Final Destination flashbacks as Nick tries to prevent disaster at the Tagert Theatres, including a fire extinguisher failing like Evan's in FD2 and him being attacked by a nail gun like Erin in FD3.
The movie theater wouldn't ultimately be the death of Nick, Lori, or Janet, but the final chronological scene of the series would offer a few more connections and secrets. The first sign that danger is afoot when Nick returns to the Death by Caffeine cafe for the last time is the bus passing by, bus number 180. Later, inside the cafe, Janet is wearing a hoodie with a print of cherries. We previously saw cherries on stylist Deedee's necklace, and she was also involved in a serious accident. Then the homeless man who threw away the lucky penny appears and starts a conversation, another omen of bad luck. "Okay, that was really strange." No, there was nothing strange about that.
I don't know why you would mention one of the few normal moments in this movie. They all sit together having a drink, creating a direct parallel to the final accident in the first Final Destination with Alex, Clear and Carter. As in the accident at Café Miró 81, there is a problem with the scaffolding at a nearby construction site. And just like in that scene, Nick says essentially what Clear said but with much more pessimistic intentions. “How do we know this wasn't exactly what was meant to happen? That of all of us on Flight 180, Carter and I were meant to live? “What if being here, right now, was the plan all along?” The scaffolding falls to the street, right between the 180 bus and a sign that says Dead End.
This would be your dead end. Click the video on the left for the next episode of Final Destination Things You Missed.
