102nd Running of the Indianapolis 500
Feb 18, 2020next is a special ABC presentation there's nothing like Indianapolis on race day the show welcome to the
102nd
Indianapolis 500 the pre-race show presented by Pennzoil and for 54 years we're on NBC hello, I'm Nicole Briscoe, there are 33 drivers in this field and in the next few hours they'll be writing a story for one of the finales that will define their career a bit like winning a Super Bowl Aaron Rodgers has done that he's here today with his girlfriend Danica Patrick doing the latest career start more on that in a minute Kelly Clarkson is going to sing the national anthem and Thor after Chris Hemsworth has an important job will wave the green flag today some advice he's gotten on that and Victor Oladipo of the Indiana Pacers will appropriately drive the pace card there is a certain amount of respect for the Speedway when it comes to life on a race morning a quiet calm and then the noise so As their final preparation begins, the cars are now on the grid and the drivers head to the pre-race ceremonies that saw the crush of fans for a driver for the first time. This place is also his childhood as a carpenter. He grew up in Indianapolis. He attempted his first race here when he was eight years old. He used to work on the golf course inside the track; in fact he crashed a few of those golf carts on the road but they cleaned it up this month and dr. Jerry punch was fastest when it counted - well, for the third time in his career, ed, you had the fans on their feet and whooping their approval when you won the pole here in Indianapolis and I know you're looking for that first win, so today, as? you translated he took out a speed to race his results it's going to be a totally different day you know the conditions are going to be very challenging today you can feel the heat standing here and the track Tim Sprague is going to be as high as we've seen all month so It's going to be a struggle for all of us, you know we're all going to have to manage our car and traffic and whatever circumstances come our way, but you know I feel like we're battle tested right? now in fact the team is prepared and you know if we have good pit stops and we will do everything we can to keep him in front. early to stay there, I mean, I think we are I think everyone will work hard to get to the front, you know, I think what's going to get hard is just not knowing where the yellows will fall, you know if you could skip the middle it's not yellow, You know we're going to see the field split and it's going to be a tough call so hopefully we can stay out front even though it was a week ago today that Carpenter won the poll here in Indianapolis and it's important to understand that qualifying in Indy here isn't just about speed, it's all about excitement, Indianapolis Motor Speedway on a bright day, the drama and tension of setting up the 33 who will compete in next Sunday's Indianapolis 500, the drivers fighting to be in the 33-car field, so here's James Hinchcliffe he's tracking as the slowest of the cars on lap four in the bucks for Conor Daly he's 30 seconds fast four now pumping James's head snaps off went from the end of the starting field a man is on the track now on the outside looking in who doesn't look like he is carrying a lot of speed I have to go back and try again 13 minutes and switch left to go or I can feel the tension just sitting here he is trying to empty his head of everything 2016 hole winner is having two fights again last spot on the grid very very very bad vibe.
I've got some and the track will be available to mesmerize a man and all James Hinchcliffe can do is sit back, listen to his heartbeat and watch the seconds tick by. James Hinchcliffe will not qualify for this year. Indianapolis 500 while I was standing here with James Hinchcliffe and okay let's talk about the fact that as tough as it was on the day of the hit, how tough it was the next day when all the other drivers were getting back in their cars and you weren't a weird face weird being on a race track and not driving even if you're not supposed to be in the race so being on a race track and not driving when you really should be in the race is hard no doubt about it , but he was he was a good guy you know, dip your toe in the water of what it will be today, today will be difficult, there is no doubt about it, but you know I am very proud of this team, I am proud of my teammates as a team, obviously I'm going to cheer them on. in helping in any way I can but yeah it will be a hard day ok there were efforts to get you into a car after that day which would have meant you are taking another driver's place.
How close was that gift? Honestly, all of that was done way on top of me. I dont even know. I told him I really want to be left out of it like I said. You know from the beginning. I was mentally preparing myself not to be in the race from the moment the gun went off because that's what it needed to do for me and I guess there were some arguments not sure who they were with or how far they got but in Ultimately, you know, I think we did it, we had to and we're going to take our bags, we're going to put our heads down and go to Detroit and try to win two races there, yeah different kind of survival for James Hinchcliffe today and by Of course, one of the key things is the fact that the Indy 500 is not just a race, it is the jewel in the crown of what can only be described as the greatest day in racing calling out to all racing fans. and gear junkies and speed freaks your time has come welcome to the fastest day of the year three iconic races three legendary tracks one unbelievable dawn of death Ray's racing wallet eats up the golden streets of Monaco noon promises 500 miles of immortality if you are pushed through the vein god of bricks and the day ends with an incredible test of endurance under the lights and Charlotte if you love the smell, feel and taste of milk of victory, my friend, you are in the heavy octane of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 today. speed has no limit
indianapolis
500 three race show presented by pennzoil about babies switching to pennzoil synthetics today and partly because of progressive insurance back in the day all the naughty pictures came from them they all make a snake face they shut it down because there's noise and then there's snake bite noise I'm not sure it's actually much quieter today you still need to be a proper adult to be there it's a lot tamer right now this has always been my favorite place to look since IMS it's the grassy knoll at turn two, like grabbing a blanket, maybe a drink, sit down and when the cars go by, you feel it in your soul now for reference, I'm the turn. in theory turn three is right there except not really on this day the Indianapolis Motor Speedway actually becomes the second largest city in Indiana we're talking 300,000 people this sixty-fourth largest city in the US .becomes bigger than 53 countries in the world now.I'm not judging, okay, maybe a little bit, but I think where you choose to watch this race might say something about you in all the years I've been coming here. I have never been brave enough. to go where Marty Smith is right now, welcome Come to the nest Nicole it's funny the Indianapolis 500 and the American sports institution and somewhere within that portrait of America are these wild people the nest of snakes in the turn three it's an old tradition david hoisting rod in the infield and the shops are just as heavy as j point premiers are al unser it's crazy here this is the loud clown let's get to the sophisticated group it's not a fan of sitting in racing traffic where there were 200,000 of your closest friends, we still want to be here early enough to enjoy the energy of this show try this glamping glam camp this year seventy two tents with beds furniture electricity and 15 houses tiny with air conditioning prices start around $1,300 for a party in a foreign try key word is party but this is the best part folks you were right in the middle of the action she's ready to see some drivers can you imagine the emotions today for danica patrick she's back in the place that made her a home? sehold name recalls 2005 when she took the world by storm in the late lead and finished fourth as a rookie behind Dan Wheldon today she is back for the first time in seven years but also for the last period of time until the end of her racing career comes to an end as she raced us today the first woman to win an IndyCar Series race in Japan in 2008 she finished third here in 2009 in 2018 to close the book here's Hannah Storm can't think of a better place to finish that here where it all began and really came full circle.
Why was it so important for you to finish your degree here? Good memories. Lots of memories. Period came together for one last race, so it's going to be an emotional race day, but I'm going to try. Have as much fun as you can and come out with the best possible result. I can drive. What do you remember most about being here as a rookie and leading those 19 laps? it was good it was really fast as i remember being easy and i remember thinking just stay humble like there's no way it can be that easy all the time if there's anything i've learned about life in general but especially about this track and its history and her life that she has here is like don't be too arrogant and look at this as an absolutely amazing tactic is real and she leads why do you think what you were able to achieve here in and why did it resonate so strongly outside of your sport?
I mean it's a big question that I don't really know other than the fact that there's only a couple of things that I've won. I'm always honest and I think people can connect with that but they see that they feel that and the By the way a pioneering aspect of who you are girl yeah if I had thought of myself as different and like a girl and how I I'm doing for a girl, well that would have been the right indicator and my mind would have been set on that limit or that potential and it never has.
Have you made it easier for women who have dreams in this sport? Our mind is incredibly powerful so as soon as you think you can do something that's really the teaching not me doing something me doing something doesn't make you capable of doing something well you have to believe it so there will be skeptics and they will be believers from the beginning and then it is how you deal with the situation, you know what you are going to be able to do that you have not done. I haven't been able to do that thing that excites you so much I'm excited to have less pressure in general as I feel in my evolution I enjoy doing things that are artistic and creative so I want to do more of that and less of the you know not in my holy stomach do it dig deep you know this is what you do Danica um like im excited to drop that and just relax the legacy question has to be asked what do you think it will be racing wise more than anything i just hope they remember me as a great driver and then she was a girl that's not something to be written off i think that's part of my story i'm proud of it it's helped me it's hurt me i just hope people remember me as a great german and this summer danica patrick will something more than any other woman has done before.
She will host the live ESPYs on ABC presented by Capital One. It's Wednesday, July 18 from the Microsoft Theater. It's the night that sports and entertainment collide. moving on here today actor Chris Hemsworth Thor also played James Hunt in the movie race going to wave the green flag today okay so when you throw out the first pitch in baseball all they tell you is don't bounce it what advice have you been given about waving the flag so that a flag definitely bounced? Or don't drop it trying to figure out which hand to use. Clear it in the right direction so you don't redirect the cars.
There are a few things that H awaii Michelle just a little bit of pressure but it should be fun how long do you plan to stay in that position while I leave me that probably waved me down again? I don't know, it's very exciting that this is the first time I've been here I've been in Formula A in New York, which was great Minda Monica This is something completely different again It's wonderful How does this compare to Monaco? I want to say that this is the most important day in motorsports in the whole world. How does this experience compare? for that aspect it's just as chaotic in the crowds this is intense and busy and excited so they are very similar obviously very different to the geographical setting but the crowds are just as enthusiastic as they are in Monaco yeah hey just remember not let him enjoy the day so Chris we will start the day with the green flag but remember for a driver this is all going to end with a bottle of ice cold milk Marty Smith one of India's most iconic traditions arrives in a jugglass at 5:45 in the morning by the first people who let deny here on race day the milk people for over 80 years nearly every Indianapolis 500 winner has drunk from the glass chalice of tradition and bathed his life-changing moment in white drops of history it all started in 1936 with Louis Mayer his mother told him on a hot day to drink buttermilk well when he won the 500 he was hot and like any good son he listened to Mom what I didn't know is that at that time he set history and did not abandon the Meyers tradition ask Emerson Fittipaldi in 1993 Fittipaldi chose to drink orange juice in victory lane to promote some orange groves he owned, they still haven't forgotten him Around here these days, all 33 drivers choose the brand of milk they want to drink in victory lane before getting in the car, just in case they get a chance to shower themselves with victory in history, é take a look here. the list of what the drivers expected check out ed carpenter he'll put louie mayer if he wins he wants that buttermilk you know we're going big here we bring the flags be this guy this memorial day weekend a jumpers some of them veterans for flags and when we get back the most kissable Rick's on every eyelid the Indianapolis 500 greer a show hosted by United Rentals that their first shift group program that helps provide cutting edge medical technology and access to rehab and military and veterans take turns for the troops helping our heroes take their next steps forward a spin on it there is no other world the idea of getting down on your knees and putting your mouth on the road that has been run down repeatedly s Sounds appealing unless that, of course, you're in Indianapolis and that piece of road is the brick yard, which is also always hard to explain to kids.
No don't eat that food off the floor but yeah we're going to kiss some bricks if you win this race once it's part of history if you win it four times Kittery AJ Foyt's reprinted in unser rick mears the only four time winners of this race but we could add to that list today yacht Vegas yes we could and of course that would be Elio Castroneves who just saw the four time winners chart last year he was within two tenths of a second of doing it but the cars have changed a lot since then, how do you rate your chances today, yeah?
I like it a lot. The Shell Pennzoil machine definitely looks strong as you can see the weather is really really tough something the whole week everyone has been practicing is a little bit different so a lot of people not just me but a lot of people started to relearn. the car does in those conditions but we feel like we have enough tools in the car to make that happen so I'm um I'm excited let's get on with it so quickly is there something to the fact that you're not
running
all the series? In IndyCar, does that somehow make you more focused today?I feel like we have nothing to lose right now. We're not thinking about points. You're not thinking about the championship. We're just thinking about that big one. and we're going to make it happen and of course Elio will be easy to spot again this year and Pennzoil colors driving what he calls the Yellow Submarine Nicole, Roger Penske got his 200th IndyCar Series victory with the victory of the willpower at Indy Grand Prix fair A couple of weeks ago there have been 15 new Penske Indy Car championships but the number when you drive for Roger Penske is 16 16 wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway none of the guys who have the privilege to call this race Scott Goodyear Eddie Cheever and Allen Bestwick Yes and You're going to watch a team, a team to win this race today.
Penske is probably a good place to start. Yeah, those numbers say a lot about the captain and his team here at Indianapolis Nicole, what makes Roger Penske so good here. think about it he started down this road many decades ago he's had a lot of great drivers who drive what has been the only consistency has been Roger Penske he's relentless when he starts a road and now he's got the number 16 and today he's got four guys he could make it to 17 now Roger could be anywhere on the planet he chooses to be today but he chooses to be here in Indianapolis and not in the sweet air conditioning but at the moment Stan calls this strategy for one of his race teams What passion for this race, how does that affect the drivers, the mechanics and the teams that work for him?
Now when you ask anyone who works for Roger Penske they will tell you that Roger tells them the most important race to win is Indian. The Annapolis 500 is what defines the 21 billion dollar Penske automotive empire now the only guy who maybe has no pressure on him here today to win is Elio Castroneves because he has won three times but for the other three Pinsky drivers who have won the Verizon IndyCar series championship, they know that to keep their job at Team Penske, they'll have to have an Indianapolis 500 win on their resume, so for 33 other cars in the field today they're Team Penske Penske or the field in those conditions of probabilities today new cars the heat I will go with the field you go with Penske every day you take the road for sure I am taking the road very safe those four cars qualified in the top eight places in the field no doubt being contenders for sure let's hear from last year's champion who drives for Team Penske Josef Newgarden is on pit road well Allen you're right he's the reigning champ he won the champ born in his first year for Roger Penske but when you drive for the captain there is one job and that is to win 500 do you feel that pressure when you are with this team? oh, definitely, yeah, I mean, I think you feel the pressure of the Indy 500 in general, but when you're racing with Team Penske, you feel that legacy, you feel the pressure to do your job for the group, and that means the most we've got. one opportunity every year to make it happen in this race and coming into Sunday for this race day you have had three weeks.
To fix your car, you have a day to get it right, so the pressure is huge, but I think we have a great car team. Chevy has done an amazing job for us this month. we are ready to go today the verizon cars are going to be quick ok all four cars are really strong let's say all four cars on the lead lap are struggling on that last lap what is your mentality what do you want be? the right position you know we don't know yet if that's leading or if it's second or third he doesn't really know yet until he runs the race he's playing with it all the way through figuring out where he wants to be positioned but look at these four of us in the lead lap fighting is a good thing for team penske and i can tell all these guys love it so we're going to race hard against each other but try to be very fair yeah how competitive it is the battle between these teammates. what you would really call an all out war in this case an autograph war even though we're teammates there are some lines you just don't cross is this over this will never end it really started when i signed in at the
indianapolis
airport when i took it to the next level , I'm signing a real race car, Simon is so easy to pay for, it's like taking pole position away from a baby, hey Simon, that's a super cute signing, look at this one, I know if I push him a little bit. and that's the fun of King Joseph since I see you've already signed your amendment you know the helmet that really hurt that hit very close to home with me Simon you have to think bigger than that bro you signed my house it really went up a notch and Simon signed the my front door who's gonna see that package delivery guy i'm gonna sign the bottom of your car i had to wait for his move that's the game it's your move bro so joseph you know where i am right now, I assigned you the move, brother, what kind of person signs another guy's shoes?I'm like a fox terrier. I never give up. I think he's getting a little tired. I'm not whatever. Know. April 15 was a particularly difficult day. he upset somehow and i thought we agreed not to talk about it you know i was struggling to process it hey joseph his mother maybe anger betrayal but really just determination yeah thats the deadly weapon right there and you walk by and all you can see is My signature on this is to be. You know, it's your call bro, at this point I thought I just needed to do something nice, like get his bus details, did I really oh did I?
When will this challenge end well? I guess I'll take the last checkered flag. Yes, brother Jammu. Welcome back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. switch teams in the off season and try to come back next year to win it again but with a different team which is Takuma Sato, he won the Indy 500 last year with indrani Autosport, he came back this year but with Ray Hall Letterman Lanigan racing you'd think that would make it different the chaos here is contagious the indy 500 is all about precision measured in microseconds and razor thin margins but in this order must come some chaos starts with a brave 3333 drivers some on the move before moving from new cars in these new teams each year exciting strangers are welcomed into this iconic oval new blood eyes wide as champions three top 5 in three months expectations with the group there are familiar faces in places unknown Yemen seven years of an athlete now with Carla the kids circled last year you're leaving Josie look here not enough beauty beauty routine even two champions will try to get back to the Cír Victory ass wearing the colors of an old rival you drank your milk and still get a few runs you have the power to upset the natural order of things this track owes you nothing but the call of these bricks is too loud to bear have Speed Beans ignore Elio Pinsky backwards, Pinsky time. cable is also a powerful way to frame a record-breaking career. sport forever a change comes in many complete cars including one that puts skill above all else and drivers see no one knows this car to make sense of the chaos one focused on the note that speed and danger are brothers at your chance it can come 200+ miles an hour so fast here reward never precedes risk and victory embraces but one all these same thirsty drivers bring the mail and out of all this chaos a resolution that trophy or corner measured with precision forged into medals never to be forgotten Thirty-five riders tried, but only 33 have the honor of crossing this same stage today.
Are you ready to find the starting field with a

We've witnessed Elias climb the fence three times when Alexander Rossi won the 100 Chaser Rays victory in 2014. Drivers, start your engines. make sure you made the right call going into turn one we've been out of the car for a couple of days racing into turn one at 200 miles an hour with 32 other cars three wide the only place in the world where we have a start white free no room for mistakes but we have to spin one today but it's on auto can't program anything for those first two claps see the way the pre-race stage ends and then the cars will pull away everyone they will escape It seems like every year there's a car that doesn't roll off the grid cleanly, isn't that the starting lineup in previous driver introductions?
But for review here it appears at the top of the screen the 11 rows of three. e spearheaded by the polesitter in carpenter as the field screams is the two-seater Honda leading the field Mario Andretti the 1969 winner behind the wheel riding in the backseat musician actor producer Nick Cannon enjoying the thrill of his life war Contents of Honda Racing go Honda Racing calms down Alexander Rossi, 32nd place 2016 winner, in the middle of the back row of the grid, he has our motoring nation on board, if he's going to win today he's going to have to make history, since no one has won the race since that.
It's been a long time, and yet a lot of people who do those things seem to like it. Here is Graham Rahal. Graham also has a lot of work to do. He has United Rentals on board and is 30th on the grid. Ed Jones finished third last year in his Indy debut. he has the NTT DATA cam with him starting in 29 Jay Howard makes his third start in the 500 from 28th position with the arrow aboard Ohio Zach Beach in his second 500 starting in 25 with the cam aboard the relay and a of four f first timers in the field Robert Wiccans of Canada starting 18 with Lucas Oil on board last year's winner Takuma Sato starts 16 with Honda on board last time a winner was consecutive o 1 and O 2 it was Elio who did it then the last two years in a row in three of the last four is the Auto Sport team ready for the finish that won this race they have six cars in the field for this one and of course of those six cars you already documented the two former Winners Ryan Hunter-Reay and Alexander Rossi, but Andretti Autosport's leader in qualifying was Marco Andretti, he also has the fastest practice lap of the entire field.
Marco says I like this body work. bringing the final reading name to Victory Lane as a driver last passed his grandfather Mario in 1969 Marco carrying a nation car on board is qualified from the Andretti Armada I also honored with a nation car on board today that's where the sporty Hondas of Andretti Autosport. Will they find a way to get back to the front in this race, as they have in recent years? About the third row in the stellar year. Think Danica Patrick. He came here 13 years ago. Retiring from IndyCar racing here today is appropriate she dries number 13 she wants to win the Indy 500 just like Elio and Scott Dixon the other two drivers in her row Scott Dixon who has a Honda on board is the fourth all-time winner in IndyCar. good in practice for me your team won the pit stop competition on carb day the new team crew chief and outside front tire changer blair julianne will take our camera over the wall you see a race car that approaches him a 60 mph pit stop Elio Castroneves loading the Pennzoil on board in the Yellow Submarine paint scheme this is my favorite for the race it's great to see him back and he's got that special little motivation he'll be the only human ly will be in alive that he has a chance to add to that incredible list of Floyd unser in Britain years Castroneves's age is just a number, but probably a number that contributed to last year being his 20th and final full-time season in racing of the IndyCar Series, but thanks to the loyalty and love of former car owner Roger Penske, he is back this year with a chance to make Indy history, on May 10, Elio turned 43 and, to him , those numbers in Almond, yes, three is the number of times he has won this race. also the number of times he finished second and four, that's what it's all about today. looking for someone to cheer for he chose me because today i have one more race to win and one final hurdle to climb sure it would be fun to see Danica Patrick in the final race of his racing career starting seventh today Rick but when it comes to IndyCar Danica Patrick is a finalist when she left the series seven years ago, she had set the record for the most consecutive finishes committed to the checkered flag 50 times in a row, but as any racing driver will tell you that's not enough, you also have to be fast. to win this race and this month the team of carpenters has given her a fast car so let's think about this: a person who can end up with a fast car that could make this a very memorable last race for Danica Patrick sure would it could be Josef Newgarden's Verizon IndyCar from last year.
The series champion who married a Verizon aboard finished third two years ago. Willpower has a Verizon on board, the second grond winner of 2015, free to start the month of May here at the circuit and power one of those four powerful Pinsky entries, all rated at the top. eight starting points and the field gets the cue to go to the front of the field to the 2019 corvette zr1 g he certainly endeared himself to the locals around here with his leadership and play for the pacers this season doing a good job in front of our field track fax now featured by firestone 200 laps around the two and a half mile track to make up for the 500 mile distance and pinch strategy because of this new car and heat and tire wear and such is a variable factor in the day we'll talk about that as the race progresses spanish version of the race presented by ESPN Deportes you can access using the s AP feature on your remote and with that we're half a turn from the start you met Chris Hemsworth before the marbles La Avengers series played James Honda moving Ross is ready green flag in hand waving the field of 33 as they come into the final turns some 300,000 here on a hot day for the 102nd race in the indianapolis 500 race how it will play out and who will win it's time to start fighting i always ays thought the qualifications will go with a big sigh of relief when they get through the first two turns without a crash in a very busy first level what i noticed in that in turn one if you saw a car going around the outside none other than Tony Kanaan took advantage of the start or restart when the bravest went around the outside and moved up a couple places will drive 12 Simon passion oh and the neon 22 looking for second place Penske teammates and Roger said the other day doing a press conference said we tell our drivers to look out for each other for the first hundred and eighty laps and there is no team orders the last 20 laps you're going to race you have to get to the end tho Padgett Oh again inside a power for second get that in turn one the taya filled the room on with an offer for a spot that tucks into the corner just think how it is for Mateus lace yes he grew up here before he won the freedom 100 but when you get to an Indy car he says i It's so much faster , short pitches don't even seem like great immediate team leadership on team ABC, but also having a teammate like Tony Kanaan in your stable, said I've learned so much from Tony that it seems like I've cut. two years after my rookie streaks that's absolutely true but you can't teach someone what it's going to feel like when you do those first two or three laps at the start of the Indy 500 there's so much turbulence you're just trying to move the track without committing no mistakes almost now everyone is starting to get used to it they know how their cars feel and are starting to get used to finding a rhythm that will carry him through the rest of the race Elio Castro David is driving the 340 Penske City in 8th place great for that fourth win in the 500 23 is charlie kimball answering gibble moving up to 17th this is what a lot of the riders were saying after card game practice when it was hot and it really is their first time racing this style of chassis twenty eight years in the high temperatures they said it will be an opportunistic race it will be a very technical race a technical race they said at the beginning when you have tires New penthouses you will have to go as hard as you can, you will have to try to get as many positions as you can because as you get more laps on the tires and the heat increases throughout the day the handling will be difficult. to manage and you may have to re-dial fuel and do some driving and preserve track position and save some stuff actually when you say save some stuff you talk about re-dial fuel they have a knob on the steering wheel and then you can cut fuel almost like you would on a plane, so instead of using one hundred percent fuel, they can slow down to maybe ninety-eight ninety-five percent and get better fuel mileage, maybe do an extra lap every race they're out there and on the racetrack, but the limiting factor because of the heat, as you mentioned at this point, all the drivers are charity territory because the tires wear out and they think that the tires might start to blow somewhere around lap 15 or 20 you can go 30 maybe 32 on a load of fuel which is something they're going to wear through l The tires but they're going to give up on grip which will make it really tricky in these conditions so we're off to a clean start in the Indy 500 the last two years we've driven almost a quarter of the race before we got the first yellow and see if that's what happens today green start for the indianapolis 500 at carpenter has led every lap since the pole position Simon passion Oh willpower Josef Newgarden Sebastien Bourdais are the top five.
They talked about some of the pit tactics and tactical racing that we might see today. The yarmulkes can add more men, yes, and if you look at the pit window, you might be able to stop on track. see you can make one last pit stop if you saved a little fuel like Scott Gutierrez speaking however if you have your strategy for the day to have fresh fire stones during the race you might as well stop earlier you have one more stop in your future, but why? we're looking at this now well it may only be lap 12 right now but we'll see these cars and teams play their hand if they stop between 20 and 30 we know they're looking at their tires if they stop after that until lap 33 even 34 we know they're on a fuel suspension strategy I think we're going to see some stock beat today the ed carpenter guys know and if the car stays up front that's wherethe air is clean the car handles better here is the downside you were told being up front you are going to burn a lot of extra fuel it will probably lose us a lap maybe two laps having to launch shorter than the others just told ed carpenter that the guys behind it are probably being real smart and saving some fuel so now you have to start thinking about But that we're up front we want to stay there for clean air but you really have to watch the fuel you can start to cut back, in fact, they think about it if the objective is to cover 500 miles in the shortest possible time. the time you're sitting still refueling that adds to the equation these engineers and strategists at the timing stands are going to have a lot of work today we just know how much more fuel and carpet there is
running
after this first stop because I don't think the cars are up to par. close enough in tow to have such a big game because, um, the passion or it's not really closing the gap like they would have in the past, it's really going to be hard to ask about tire degradation.I don't see any lack of performance at all it seems they just keep the same pace he is definitely in control of his race at this point because you would have thought passion would have tried to reach out to see how his car would handle and he hasn't . t so looking at some people The people who have been up and down since the start Danica Patrick has moved back five positions from her seventh grid spot, she is back in 12th place Rick and has already come on the radio and talked about the fact that the car is unscrewing here, in fact. we're hearing that from a lot of the drivers who are radioing their team back saying they're experiencing understeer, they've already talked about the fact that at this upcoming pit stop they're possibly looking to redo a wing adjustment on the front of the car to try to counter that understeer you don't turn hard enough as you enter the turn imagine you're on ice and you're turning and instead you're skidding into the wall that's not what a driver does riki was also seeing on the telemetry and listening he's on board with Danica how much he had to lift off the throttle to get through the corner turns three and four let's see again that's all the way that's not lifting that's hitting your foot Don't hit the throttle now notice how much steering movement that has It means it's a very nervous race car every time you're pushing the wheel like that, but let's not forget that it also rained during the night and washed some of the rubber off the race track this track is different than the last time they drove in final practice on Friday what really amazes me about their lift is that it has clean air and they have fun because there is no cars in front of her so she doesn't have to go into rough air if she lifts someone else's gearbox it will be much worse Zack Beech and Max Chilton have dropped six and seven places respectively in these first few laps.
Now here is the big driver in the early laps. This is Graham Rahal Ray Hall who started all the way back in 30th position. He has gained seven places now and is running on 23 clock. high line now he's a spotter you can hear that spotter on his radio standing right there on the right hand side at turn three up he can see exactly what's going on on the radios to the drivers to tell them if they're free and lets them know where there's the safe part on the track brick inside the cars they have what they call tools the ability to change some of the suspension settings not a lot but they could do it the team just called danica patrick's radio and asked if the tools work and she said no really, as a result they said we'll try a tire fit as well, a full pressure fit when they come in I remember talking I talked to Tony Kanaan before the race about the fact that they need those tools, he said there will be plenty of ways to make those changes to this car from this race.
I'm Rick, thanks, so while Fran Trey Hall continues to try to push forward, we're looking at the front of the field to see if any of these cars will commit to that shorter stop for fresher tires strategy that you outlined just a minute ago. to get some perspective on pace btw with the heat and race conditions and stuff Ed Carpent er the race leader is running 1 second slower than most of the pack on carb day in Fighting I think it's because of the heat, but what's very impressive with ed carpenter, his times are extremely consistent when you drop your tires. you start to see a variance in your speed a few laps to get faster but they tend to keep going down he is in full control of this race at the moment so who commits to the earlier stops who stays out until all the fuel is burned fuel load we'll know in these next ten minutes or so and the indianapolis 500 the indianapolis 500 telecast presented by firestone we've already burned 250 miles so we better clear so far no caution flags and ed carpenter leading all laps from pole position after making the jump at the opening start Will power is running in third position a look from his on-board cam and a reminder to download IndyCar mobile to access exclusive live in-car cams here Pit crew driver chatting more alone on the horizon a little radio for you here that might as well have been chinese p For us because I have no idea what those numbers meant it was definitely a fuel discussion strategy so you have a number you have to get to right they will never let you even when you ask the team what they explained over the radio to drivers it's a cold and having the driver make selection on the new steering wheel exactly where the teams tell them to save some fuel we don't have to remember all these cars have real time telemetry so everything that happens on their cars almost 100 mile feeds being broadcast to the pit lane all the engineers sitting peddling so they can see on their computers exactly what is going on with the car one of them is obviously the fuel which along with the fuel pressure the tires and, among other things, they will devise a strategy for the race itself so that the driver returns to the field a bit 19 is Zachary Claimant de Bello one of the pil Other rookies in the field followed by six Robert Wiccans who claim they escaped from Montreal were not supposed to be in this race that was supposed to be Pietro Capaldi, the grandson of the two-time winner, but Fittipaldi injured and a racing accident from sports cars over at spa francorchamps i spoke to him in the gas alley area yesterday he had surgery he said here he is moving as he reacts well he hopes to be back in the indycar series for the mid-ohio race this summer what that would be an excellent recovery from What was a horrible crash?
Hay Wiccans Hay Boo Leo Carlos knows the biggest difference I've noticed in the last four years is that the cars can't wear their clothes in the corners like they have in the past and so it's very difficult to pass. no one because you're not accelerating out of the corner faster than the handlebars so this will have a lot to do with how this race ends and I think you're absolutely right and I think the other thing is that we seeing right now I mentioned it rained overnight removed some of the rubber from the track the cars are going to be a little different than they ended up with a final practice on friday they will be tuning those cars we talked about as rick mentioned some of the internal tools can change the weight distribution of the car pressing a button on the steering wheel and also moving the world bars in a road car its unadjustable drivers adjust their cars to the conditions after every stop I think we are going to see the pace start to pick up and let's talk engine battle, top eight best cars seven of them are from chevy and only one with or one day in fifth as i remember from honda i hope they can have another. period and I'm not so sure James Davis and he had no problem up there in turn three or four he looked really slow off the pace maybe he got some dirty air from the car in front and ended up going up the road these cars that have that understeer you can see this is not where you want it says no where you want to hit the gas you're right he was absolutely something look what was all that about what's up with davis' car the situation like he was on the radio at first saying the car was lazy they said hang in there hang in there we're looking at an example of what happens if you hang in there too long if you have one then that doesn't work it goes away quickly james davidson a classic example is jr.
The Hilton Hildebrand plan and the blue, orange and white cars just took a place at Charlie Kimball that quarter. Davis said, of course, it already crashed once in the week. This week, a strong crash left him quite battered, since he will lose a place. here for Oriole Serbia, he's created a huge bottleneck behind him and Eddie, you know it's over halfway when a car backs up in front of you. He loses control of the car but you're right the bottleneck behind him is just creating a traffic jam and the leader is catching up to the tail of the field and this is the lead carpenter at the back of that group right behind the double wide and attentive to the head. to the pits, he won't want to mess around here, he'll slide into the pits.
I'm sure Danica Patrick, the first to pick early Han, was talking about the question: are you going for fuel or are you going for tires deep inside? this case it's the tires and the car balance concern they were concerned about that as a result they said they were going to take home we have a disconnected turtle and we send it back there you see they come out again in this davidson racing guy sure has changed the complexion of this race from the start right now farmer has to find a way to fight his way through all those cars if not they will pass it off here is Tony Kanaan on Tony Kanaan remember he was the fastest the day of carving the last practice before us. got to the Indy 500 they are going to do a wing adjustment on his car and it hasn't been about the car in terms of its condition other than it's time to make a conscious minor change good clean stop and Rick mentioned that change of wing Tony You can probably always complain about understeer where the front end doesn't react, wind change will take care of that here, pit road leaders Simon Kesh know in the carpenter both in a few others followed him in Castro Devas , they will also come behind that line which is charlie kimball between the passion oh and castroneves rick simon the passion oh getting the car down he was very happy friday he actually said he had a car that was about a ninety five out of a hundred in In terms of where it was going to go and what it was going to do, not much has been complained about the car in general, but still a little change of wing, probe, wing chain for ED joiner, a little bit to try to help the understeer in the corner, carpenter away, get out The front of the pad, you know, the carpenter hasn't played with the bar one bit, but they're trying to think ahead, that's why they made the James front wing a little bit more front wing on the car in traffic.
Joseph Newgarden took the lead when Passion Oh and Carpenter set him now Newgarden is in the pit lane along with a host of other power cord a Dixon Marco Andretti Ryan hunter-reay all at this stop there's defending Series Champion Newgarden Josef Newgarden have commented a bit about abou I'm doing a wing swap and they say I have the turnip front wing. I have severe pressure. No, it will be air pressure just in the side for Newgarden trying to help the car turn a bit on air pressure. Dixit is far away, let's tackle. a lap fit on the line ahead of Marco Andretti Spencer Pickett has taken the lead by not hitting yet can't cross that line between turns one and two areas in late warmup with all four tires can fit left side tires all the path on that line, but you can't have all four crossed.
We are Julian. We just changed the outside front tire on Scott Dixon's car. This is what it looks like in Indianapolis. We'll be back after a word from ABC about him. barely a hundred miles Indianapolis 500 race through first round of green flag pit stops and Edie carpenter has held the lead is up by a second and a third over Tony Kanaan with Josef Newgarden Simon passion oh and Elio Castroneves Rounding out the top five a penalty was only awarded by Kyle Kaiser at the 32nd for hitting staff on pit road, he has taken a passing penalty and served that penance and back to the carpenter he has just done thefastest lap of the race with a 223 seven, so he definitely has a The dominating car today made its first pit stop without having any problems.
New tires. Johnson grabbed the wing and all of a sudden the cars were now sitting on the tires coming onto the racetrack as I mentioned. Throughout the day report back to the pits what your car is doing to the engineers to see that through that real time - let me try it no problem today's winner is going to be tuning his car chasing track conditions and weather conditions everything the day at this time. I don't see anybody that can touch him guys, one of the reasons you think the team thinks Carpenter was going to be good and now he's good today is because you remember pole day when everything was on edge, he said when the cars on the rag The edge and grip are minimal and the track is slippery.
Our head carpenter goes there and spins the labs at 230 miles per hour. He is fearless and he finds a way to get the car to pass when he has little or no grip. We think this is going to be his kind of day it's not that the tires are hot the grip is minimal and guess what so far so many people have so much passion for this place but to the head it's deeply personal you see his finishes over the last few years when he started on the front row he is not able to get the race day result he wanted once he was in contention he was swept away by another driver in a crash others had a mechanical problem but today they hope to score the 500 miles together what Obviously it would be a big win every lap he does in the lead it's one more confidence he's betting on building himself which will come in handy late in the race if he still has a strong one and the real question at the moment is when you start to get up The traffic you are driving so far, the cars that are at the back of the grid, once you get close to them, you will now find out how your car works and that traffic that disturbed the air now with this new car with the reduced downforce that is when cars are at their worst this will be the test for ed carpenter.
I totally agree. I remember a race. That will happen. I think it was in the 94 or 95 world so this is the last big speed hurdle he's going to have to jump over because you're going to be in traffic for a long time he could lose three or four miles an hour easily behind a car that can't happen, so you'll see a carpenter. there, the Oriels Serbia lap car, that white car that Tony Kanaan, the former winner to second after starting over in tenth, mentioned made some bold moves on lap one and Rick also executed the pit strategy at the pit stop. well exactly it's interesting because I'm c Knowing he was talking to Tony Kanaan about the car he was going in he said we're just a couple tweaks away from having the car exactly where he wanted and even if we don't it's still going to be a good car after carving it.
The day I reached out to me, I was like, hey, how did those settings work? He goes. I do not tell you. That means they were. muddy corsica. No driving this year for AJ Foyt. AJ is here looking for what would be his third win as a participant. in the 500 surviving another fight with those killer bees that he seems to stumble upon on his ranch outside of Houston no I'm talking passion for this place can you imagine how happy AJ Foyt would be if he gave Tony Kanaan , that big kiss on the cheek if they're standing in victory lane at the Indy 500 and how happy Kaname would be, yeah get that big bear hug from AJ here at the long way to go 500 before that happens right after of a hundred miles. in the race ed carpenter in front and guess what a bribe is.
I wish the other yellow car wasn't in Indianapolis. James Davison crashed at turn four. There is also another car on the inside of the track and our first yellow of the race. He comes out on lap 47 of the 200 Davidson that we saw he was in a lot of trouble and that trouble became terminal for his career I said to Takuma Sato on the inside stuck in that yeah okay this is what happened it was just a matter of time when that was going to happen you can't run much slower than anybody you know I don't really understand that because he's so off the pace he has to know he's on the road and the car wasn't right and he went into a hole stop , he went out again at that speed and he, which is so far from the pace you need, if you had more experience, you would be coming to the pit lane saying change the car, fix the clock on Takuma Sato's car, since it is a shame and a waste for both of us all i should have done was call him to try and fix the car if it was loose do something even if it takes two or three laps to drive absolutely brilliant what a cold blood he was that he waited the whole time to see where they were going to go and then just or in the end he made the right call but sacco had nowhere to go he hangs that one at 33rd with davison because it pisses me off that he's running off the track like that yeah but that's more of the pits i should be calling him on this it's doing everything it can to obviously keep a car loose on the track but it's you you could tell where it was going it was going between 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 in all the years I've run it maybe I had to pass two cars in 15 years, maybe waiting for a caution to get a chance to make some adjustments to that car without wasting as much time, but unfortunately the caution was him, so the first caution of the race went to James Davidson and Takuma Sato who are running in a crash at turns three and four, pit road is closed while they pick up some of the debris and where the cars have stopped on the race track the pits will now be open as they have a scene enough really clear and see if people come back through pit lane now, I expect them to do it in about 20 laps from the start of the green flag pit stop round and about 15 from when most of the leaders came down the street from pits and another update on motor competition, top seven from Chevy to Honda: manufacturers in series last year Honda with a decided lead over Chevrolet and steam under engine cover this year Chevrolet came back and said we found something , I think they didn't say more than that and when they came back they have a fair wit Cheers and don't think Honda is going to sit back and accept that it will do exactly that then the other one will do a little bit more, that's what competition is all about right?
That's what the power and aerodynamics of the Indianapolis 500 are all about. I'm our security team. picking up all the pieces and you see them working to remove the two cars so here they come to the opening of the pit lane and the carpenter will be heading left just like the other cars on the main lap for the most part the pit stops yellow flag sometimes lead to contact on pit road this pit lane is very narrow when you have a lot of cars in there at the same time watch the pit exits to see if someone's race is ruined there yes do a wing adjustment he said that there was understeer in the car at first they said yes then they decided not to do a wing adjustment because they wanted to get it out as quick as possible doc into turn three while the critical part man didn't beat everyone in the world and that's exactly what the 20 car has done, that's the advantage of being the last starting business, he only had like 10 feet left before he crossed that line and he was close. stop and by force of will drew to try to gain some of the track position they lost in that last cycle of the race.
Problems in turns three and four bring out the first yellow of the Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for which we are under caution. the first few times after the acclaim and D'Mello in front under an alternative selection strategy, we have been granted incredible access at the top of the pagoda, no one can come here, in fact, there are only six other people here in Right now, I have to say it turns out that you two are members of the Penske team above and but Denker and Jonathan Gibson, but this gives you an idea of the scope of this Speedway, you can see the snake pit there, that gigantic stage there.
Like a concert that takes place in the snake pit, in the middle of this run you can see the golf course, the golf course that crosses the Brickyard, there are full holes located inside, turn towards the Indianapolis skyline that can see in fact this is one of the only places on the entire track where you can be and see all four corners of the speedway amazing access will continue to show that and will continue to show you the live action of the speedway under caution for the first time we'll be back to race number 100 and second out of Indianapolis Motor Speedway when we get back here's what happened between Davis and Sato we'll be back in a few so the new race leader is Zack and he claims to smooth out the Montreal rookie whose team didn't. well under this yellow brick well that's exactly right i was talking to tactician michael canis and why didn't you bring him over he said well first of all we didn't really have to get second on my targets to get him up to speed forehead. beli Evas it's so hard to pass he said he needs him up front and he said my theory is I put him up front and then figure out how to keep him up front later it's kind of hard to do it on fuel alone his sixth IndyCar started and his first time started in the 500 ed carpenter right behind him Elio Castroneves in the ninth paper a bit of a problem here for one of the favorites and Elio Castroneves as they see what they are trying to do here they are going to make it change the fuel hoses Elio came in and the car wouldn't take fuel they weren't sure if there was a problem with the dry brake on the car now they determine they think it's the fuel system here and there is a problem with the nozzle so they have discussed it with Roger Roger told me that they waited long enough to fill it with fuel but that they are going to change the hose hello doctor thanks green flag here we go here is the carpenter he inside he can't look outside of him mon de mello turn one which is the perfect mood for at Cochran's putting a distance he and everyone else go Tony Kanaan to the inside remember everyone is on new tires and the tires have a lot more momentum.
Firestone says it smoothes out tire wear and will pass here very often very fast. It's going to be tricky for the drivers they got to navigate it you gotta be patient kid they sure are using all the road coming out of 2, 3 and 4 here comes Joseph Newgarden to get past he had to push his way through you see the car . starting to move just a little bit that disturbed air even next to some battles now Ryan hunter-reay passing the pnc machine to Scott Dixon were on board with Scott right now here's Simon hot hopping on a line which you'll get by clicking to smooth a Couple of things here folks this goes back to the urgency of bootstraps and restarts that people talked about do what you can while the field is clumped because once it spreads it's going to be harder to get a draft out of that. t to pick it up moving to the inside of the 21 Hunter a have to backtrack trying to find a way around it its going to be harder to get those spots once the cars spread out in line so when its all still a bit crowded and people you have have to check for other cars, do everything you can, that's a level of aggression that will only increase at the end of the race weekend, but Alan, the danger level, caution issues and Jones at turn two year past such a spectacular performance as an 11 rated 500 rookie finished third he said this year everyone has been chasing a feeling that just doesn't exist in this car including myself was that's not the feeling he wanted he was finishing he was trying to finish a sentence before the accident occurred saying the level The risk of trying to overtake cars in the first two laps or in the first four or five corners is much m Better than when it's just a one-on-one battle with someone else because there's a lot that can go wrong now. to see what happened because the tires are inside the tires that are broken not the outside tires so jones got out of his car and walked away towards the top of the screen wow thats loose he disappeared halfway of the curve he ain't around nobody when the rear end comes like that it's called oversteer so we're not sure if something broke or the car was just loose coming in to create that oversteer now on board it was a ride and listen up I'm starting to wonder if maybe something did.
I didn't break there because it was just a very primitive movement on the tire on the car being very loose and that's when the rear end wants to come back, as I mentioned, you become passenger Eddie at that point and very early in the race. very disappointed, i was in a lot of dirty air and very low on the track when that happened, i was running in 24th position at the time, so the caution came out for the second time in this race and this is what we talked about aggressiveness of the pilots. grassmarking more yellows, leading to more aggression as people try to take advantage of passing opportunities in today's extremely hot conditions at the Indy 500 150 miles in this Indianapolis 500 race A couple of incidents Takuma Sato and James Davison involved in the first James Davison has a hard time with this off-beat car promising a bottom up coming into pit lane to get the car up to speed again until kuma the pain coming into the corner has nowhere to go lo he runs over from behind and this could have been so much worse and so The day of pain ends a few laps after the restart on Joan's issue, in turn, to put us under caution once again after just three laps of racing and just He lost control of the car because something broke or it was dirty air, but it was just there. one second and sideways the next and let's see yan who has Dooku Asano well the good news is Takuma Sato has been released from the Medical Center you're fine but it seemed like a scary time with a slow Davison car ahead you, yeah, I mean, it looks like too much clothing and, as I said before, I obviously backtracked on everything, I even hit the brakes, it just wants to have an airbag like that, it's just sucking it up and a really unfortunate situation. for both of them and they really feel sorry for the team, the fans and all the supporters.
I know James feels really bad about that too, but did you get any warning from your spotter that you were closing so fast, well me and Robert? they were catching the train ahead in the pack and once he got there I could see obviously two cars next to each other but at that point maybe James had too much trouble and he had to back off and into the gray and coming to the corner I think the speed difference is too big and I try to avoid everything unfortunately sorry I couldn't avoid a tough day for last year's winner thank you thank you John thank you so I'll look at some numbers from the race so far five changes of leadership and d two warnings again the car is different this year last year the car put a big hole in the air the draft on the blackboard was all through the car this year it has less hole in the air piercing it so it's a kind of throwback the look of the cars itself is a bit retroactive and the way these drivers have to move forward on the track is also a bit retrospective add one thing to that and you're right over the draft of the other the difference is that they have taken a lot of downforce off the cars so it's very hard for you to be unstable when you're behind a car that's one of you in the middle of a corner it just doesn't handle just as good as before. before so the drivers don't have that downforce to rely on we're almost back to the 90's or earlier maybe even the mid 80's there was a time when moving around this circuit without taking your foot off the throttle was almost impossible green flag is out tony kanaan chasing the leader ed carpenter with a great run and the crow d erupts every time tony kanaan takes the lead every time one of the fight cars takes the lead now this is the first exam tough dead carp will have to deal with we'll see how he deals with Kaname in the matrix and Piggott in the matrix back down he didn't have the position alongside Sébastien Bourdais taking a spot on Charlie Kimball and more in line for day 18 cable 23 Robert Wiccans right behind them in the front six carpenter believed by queer right perfect our local guy vs.
Tony Kanaan I let their driver be good so you jumped on me at the restart. I'll show you who has a horse today. Yes, these reboots are really intense. Look at this. if Dixon's tire could have been sliced by the way and he's down, boy the grass hasn't seen that since Ryan Hunter was looking over the high side, man am I glad to be in the cockpit today. Kanaan is with him. Scott Dixon for what he went through race a year ago and there he is laying it all out again why win the Indianapolis 500 Nixon racing carpenter 11th ed racing first pier remember we told you your buddy was trying to save fuel and help to the important fuel is today he was told before the reset to go to a certain fuel setting that was full rich don't think it's a fuel and it's over the lead while Tony Kanaan proved timing was not the case, but they went back to where they were running and now the result is the carpenter sailing again, so fuel economy in the spirit of the restart checked it out. the list didn't work but i have to tell you what Kanaan is doing he is the only Spaniard in the state to come close to carpenter and if he can do that he will run at carpenter speed use much less fuel and if he circles he will light enough that will be a big plus it's our firestone telemetry look at the number for that mile per hour on the straight to the corner for the quran and theology elevators left him a lot but he's still there and you know eddie that w When you get back on as aggressively as he did there you're confident in the car you're not tentative with it that's a good sign yes he eased off the throttle but it's the best we've seen so far just a little . 230 miles per hour Sunday driving to the corner Danica Patrick problems and that's how her driving career ends in Indianapolis Safety team Mayor Patrick starts climbing from the car to the right much like Ed Jones in the middle of a turn rear end begins When we saw it earlier in the race, I thought I was dealing with a car that was very neutral to positive at the front, which means it was very difficult to turn into the corner because the rear does not want to swap ends. sure if that's the case there but it looks like a dimension of lies very similar to Eddie - Eddie Jones oh that's just a loose car the rear end slipped away from me and there's nothing you can do once it's gone , you can't catch it in time, look, it should catch you. puts our hands down racing in the seventeenth at which point another look from alexander ross is on board who was the spotter for alexander rossi telling him good job good job because he missed the accident death patrick not what they expected today but what a race good she had a very long conversation with her team during the last yellow they were talking about the car and how it was doing one thing she talked about was the fact that it got more unstable as they went now she was talking about understeer initially but they were saying that she was telling the team that she just wasn't doing what she wanted as the race got longer and as you can see at this key point it didn't work when asked why she came here to end her career in Indianapolis.
Danica said this was this was the place this was the place that made her relevant and she said even though the hesitation was that she didn't want to take anything away from what she's accomplished here but she did it because she and it was time to get it right, she was with a good team with a good program, she saw it during qualifying, but this is not the way she would have wanted the day to end, so Danica Patrick was heading to the Medical Center after crashing while running seventeenth. two hundred miles into this Indianapolis 500 race today's result takes nothing away from all she's done in a race car so you direct my next question which is a legacy as a race driver there aren't many Interested at the front of the fields, only Josef Newgarden third claimed de Melo and Wiccans, but most of the favorites stayed on track to collect him. your ABC station the snake pit at indianapolis motor speedway during the 102nd indianapolis 500 our broadcast presented by firestone of crash eruption three in 20 laps of racing put us under the caution for the third time i in this race first james Davison had problems and Takuma Sato couldn't help it that was on lap 48 we saw it coming three or four laps before so hard like he was going to slow him down sooner or later someone was going to run into the faculty both cars out of the race then ten laps later on lap 58 and jones ran into trouble in turn two one night in the middle of a turn the rear end comes around that's what we call a loose race car or oversteer almost like you're skidding on the ice and the result was the crash and then like a hit race card is out of the race then Danica Patrick on lap 68 now this is almost a photocopy and there Jone s is excellent.
Hi, I don't want to put my finger on anything and say it's one reason or another, but these new cars have a lot less downforce and when maybe when you go through the middle the car loses balance, it'll just lift off the track as did those two and Jones. has been transported to IU Methodist Hospital in Indiana polis complains of headache and neck pain from your updates as they become available to us so we are half a lab into the reboot and have seen issues on both ends of the track now two of the incidents in turn two one of the incidents in turns three and four, although the ones that have the cars spinning by themselves, both in turn number two dodge Joseph Newgarden, one of the few leaders who entered and he whistled that time, and I asked Syndrich, the president of Penske Racing, why you removed the sequence. he said ok two rounds on the front wing to help understeer he said but we were in our pit window now we can get it done in three more stops so why not roll the dice and get out of the sequence a bit?
We've changed the front end to make it drive better in traffic and now we're in our window we only have three stops left Newgarden gave up third position will restart 20 year green flag with carpenter and Kanaan again on a restart really has enough momentum to get around carpenter looks like he does al tho on the inside line will drive simon passion over 3rd castroneves next on the line 4th and what about ryan hunter-reay 14th to 5th former 500 winner that doesn't surprise me at all Have you found a way to the front? I'll tell you what, starting from the front position until now, you're an easy target with five or six laps to go.
That's not the best place to be. down took a wave around in the second caution now there it is through part of the strategy up in tenth place and climbing three wide around turn one rush hour traffic at 210 or 15 mph you gotta get all you can upload these restarts these guys for mass for god sake rossi 27 blue and yellow car also did a good job working his way forward remember he started on the back row started 32 Alexander Rossi running 12th at the moment and that is the type of race that you would expect from him a very calm method A very calm driver in the car team to tell you that he is very intelligent very intelligent a student of this type of racing when he came here from Formula One and he's the only driver this year who has dominated in a race where he qualified on pole and mom launched and just walked away from everyone.
I know this isn't Long Beach, but that kind of confidence goes a long way here in a long race like this. Come on, stills leading, yes, after the last reboot. carpenter and passed him a lap later, this time conatus pulled away by about five seven car lengths, so former winner Tony Kanaan took the checkered flag first in 2013 in a race where he had to be very aggressive to getting to the finish line. in front of the end, do you remember what he said he? in the end the last pit stop i'm gonna go it was like a growth pointing to a certain part of the baseball field saying that's where i'm going to hit yeah that was awesome he's the master restart tony in his 21st season of IndyCar and his 17,500 mile race Rick, let's talk about something that's very different today than the year he won the race said the year he won the race he didn't make adjustments to the car they liked the car all the time until the At the time he wasn't using the tools inside the cab they weren't making little adjustments totally different today he's been using the tools inside they've been making adjustments outside it's not an easy race for Tony Kanaan in this race but he doesn't care as long as when I get him to the end at the front of this group as this race gets longer there is another advantage that goes to Tony Kanaan if he has any credible fitness he is a triathlete and I think heat for heat is supposed to has to mos see today it's only 123 degrees right on the track on the track that's why that's the only thing you really care about yeah 88 degrees outside right now on the track temperature 123 degrees and this place is so big that track you the temperature is actually different from one end of the track to the other where Kanaan is heading right now turn three is one hundred thirty degrees track temp turn four is 127 down the other end of the speedway turn one to 119 turn at 117 angle of the shadows of the sun from thestands things like that and thumb, but it affects the performance of your car and that magical level of grip that you're looking for to try to go as fast as you can around the Brickyard about to hit the 200 mile mark in the 500 Indianapolis mile race Tony Kanaan in front are your top five Tony Kanaan, the Indianapolis 500 race leader, you race with Josef Newgarden, whose team just did a little strategy game, download IndyCar mobile and access exclusive live cameras in the car, your driver chats at the bank and more. only at Verizon Newgarden back in 20th, remember to tie for third on lap 74, a pit stop when most of the front of the pack around him didn't stop now under green over the next few laps Let's go Starting to see some of those favorites start to filter out of pit lane, save for another fast yellow Newgarden.
We're going to check there in turn two, Rick, well if you're looking for the unfair advantage on the Penske team. it's all the little things for example check this out it's a portable air conditioner they have here in the pit it actually sucks in air here it blows out cold air here so if the crews feel overheated they can come put their face on this put your hand on this maybe put the uniform up and pull it down because it's so hot out here in pit lane remember this baby will have the hottest 500 of all time though if you need to cool down the crews Penske have that little extra edge that other teams don't. coincidentally you stay there and you are reporting on that car right now very well go there to burrows no problem yes both exterior and i looked up and the firestone info is giving us an ambient temp of 92 tr a low temp of cent 24 and he talks about the crews the crews feel the heat just like the drivers reportedly and they're so important he just because they can't make a mistake putting on a wheel or filling up with fuel and they certainly give them cost the race Tony Kanaan has a second and a half lead and willpower carpenter runs third Simon passion Oh fourth Elio Castroneves is fifth so these leaders like Kanaan last met on lap 1530 and James in the fuel window of the lap except you also have caution laps because of those two crashes since they stopped so they stretch that out a bit more and c They start to readjust the window, but look at the gap, this front six is sitting from seventh to the back, there he has noticed that none of them are stuck. from the nose to the gearbox there's a big gap between each car there's hunter-reay and they're all the way back it's Marco Andretti and then Spencer Pickett from eighth at the back we really separate the field after this s last restart on point most of the overruns have happened right after the restarts this is the time of the race as he makes sure he was giving information to the team that spoke about the ambient temperature now being the highest at 92 a.m. track temperature starts to rise giving the team the input of what your car will be like how it will handle and perform and changing the tools inside the car making your car work better is how Tony Kanaan works his way around J Howard J Howard in the jay-j lab does it a lot for up and coming young racers runs the most successful formula 14 in the country right now leading the championship works with karting kids and he's certainly looking in his mirrors right now while Penske cars are being sterilized why am I slowing down three? and four you are the owner of that corner do not lift so I think they pass you through the exit of four not between those two corners you are the one who have driven race cars it is that cut when pulling over to signal the facility, get a hole which is what drivers have been told not to do and told to flag down all other drivers Wow, if ever it was risky to swerve sharply and a stretch of Slough Dahlberg isn't here it's good indeed from the start leader here you on that adventure don't say open copy can you see it I was very emphatic no I don't want that after which it's interesting when you think about it a lot of teams have been doing bigger turns I just heard another team talking about a mortar and they're going to to do that the most important thing here for these guys is to make these pit stops right when you're under green flag conditions, they need to make sure that they time this as well as possible to get them out again and look at that, a seven second pit stop that's blindingly fast, pit crews excited that that 14 car is out front and has a chance to win, I could tell in that moment that I've had it's struggles to perform consistently over the last couple of years, but this this thumping of weeks here in Indianapolis at the old wall here has been consistently fast as most teams struggled to solve the conundrum of the new car and what the data meant compared to what the driver was excited about and I knew I had a chance to win this race.
There are one hundred percent behind Konami and it can be said that now in carpenter, the leader after the cotton stop, we hope to see carpenter very soon. if not here and in fact here it comes that white line you see is not what they call an official line it's ok to cross that line up to the point where you get to the engagement line to move onto pit road so carpenter here from the leader putting willpower in the front and you heard the chief carpenter when asked what you got he said maybe a bit more but it's what it is to run into understeer especially the nose of the car feeling light in the corner three, okay and one and two, but life put four. pounds how to fuel it knowing jane marco andretti also in the pitlane has already finished her stop and will follow the carpenter back to the race track so we will boost the race leader here is the carpenter coming out with a cannon and hans goes whizzing by turn off turn number two for once the field goes through the stops i think from that report right there what ed carpenter said is probably the first time his car hasn't been perfect because he says that's what It's Rick yes Simon passion for relatively happy with the car but they're going to make a quick push just getting the fuel to send the rear end out seven point four seconds remember Mateus lace we haven't talked much about him today he's a rookie in this race he is also Tony Kanaan's teammate when they qualified, in fact, he qualified right next to Tony Kanaan.
He has been relatively happy with the car all day. It really has been a great learning experience for him. once again at seven and a half seconds now turn off the power of four Castroneves at Hunter-Rey the top three on track in the stop cycle will hit pit road for their serve Rick yes the willpower will he has sat in front without power t or really do everything he wants you would see no adjustment of the wing send count with a good clean stop nelio Castroneves said yes to be one of the front wing said let's just go with air let's say that wing Elio said I'm worried running out of adjustments, let's do it with air this time and save the wing for later entries from Spencer in his pit lane dr.
Spencer Pickett has probably had the best car the last car today has had it all month had a little problem with the gcd meeting the gearbox control unit had to close the open car refine here in yellow what does the say Safari? car actually handles pretty good in the news: slight understeer a job for megan good gas mileage good car handling and aggressive young driver hey doc watch out i come back to see in just a minute speeding penalty on pit road will bring 21 inside for a passing penalty here scott dixon from the head along with alexander rossi med and watch dixon said his drink tube is not working; he may have to give her water.
What if a driver sitting in this heat can't? drink now you need tires and obviously air pressure for a little bit of understeer let's watch and see if they can attend to the driver or not dixon said i can be fine inside a bottle he's out no other adjustments that's one of the ouch The first thing that can happen to a driver today that doesn't have to do with a crash is that the water system doesn't work inside the race car. That's where his coaching is exactly for those drivers because Scott Dixon trains a lot with the best team in town. works harder than probably anyone else water bottle system is clock 64ms serbian pit road tires will use fresh new fire stones on him had biked up the valley remember i said i was one lap back before i caught the wave on the floor buff 50 caution and the next caution allowed him to get back on the field and back in sync Danica Patrick came from the Medical Center and is with God just walked to my position here very emotional first of all Danica are you okay what? it happened in turn number two it looked a lot like what happened to daddy jones just a few laps earlier the first thing I said is I'm not sure what really happened so it seemed to be coming it seemed pretty late in the corner, so i don't know what they said they looked back at the data and it was like a little lift in the middle it was a little understeer and then they went back to that and just bloated so yeah i mean today was really disappointing for what we were looking for. for what you want for your last race, but I'm thankful for everything, so I wish I'd finished stronger.
Are all the emotions you're dealing with specific here to Indy knowing how much of a difference it made to your career? now that you're looking at a whole run that's over yeah it's a full run I mean but you know what really launched it was this so it's both you know I've had a lot of good fortune here and still have some this month, it just didn't come to race day, but we had some good times, you definitely did. Thanks Danica obviously not the way she wanted to end Tony Kanaan back in pit lane so soon Rick apparently has a puncture on the right. butt and this is really going to make a big dent in his effort to win this Indianapolis 500 not sure what caused it there obviously there's the opportunity for debris sometimes you could shut something down it doesn't really matter the outcome The bottom line is that he's forced to go into another pit stop and that's going to take a toll on his ability to win this race and he was out front, well what they need to focus on is we're getting to the middle of the race to have time to try to catch one of those rounds of waves or get back on the bike. the lead lap and trying to see what they could do in the pit stop cycle Graham Rahal is currently the leader started in 30th place. he last pitted 30 laps ago.
He's done, he said he wanted to be remembered as a great racing driver. I think it's fair to say that it showed us it was and moments of anxiety for Zach Beach and the stop you saw on our ABC coverage it looks like those flames that were t the railing where the fuel coupling disconnects from have been extinguished by whatever the reason the dry brake didn't dry out and you can actually see the flames going up so all that fuel is going down to the subway train which you'll see when it drives away the flames will go out overhead, a Sometimes they spray water on the car when it gets out and right under the bottom tray you'll start to see a little flame, they'll stay on board and hopefully we'll get out like it. on the right track keep going just stay here wow scary doctor absolutely very scary normally when you see these teams make a pit stop and add fuel you will see one time someone spray water through the Lime on the fuel nozzle that the water against cow warm keeping them fuel leaking from ignition no water was sprayed number one and you solved one of the rear shifters in front of the extinguisher they also couldn't get to the fire because the crewman was blocking the extinguisher ed o2 problems and luckily the extinguishers they helped, but they were very lucky.
Graham Rahal Pitts of the lyrics listen to Graham, he's actually been very happy with the car he's driving. strategy alright ray hall is doing the exact same thing his plan is to try and keep this car on a different strategy at the end of this race wiccans also on carlos muñoz stefan will sit in pits this lap so he's going to get zac flame back to calm in the lead vs will power who is now in carpenter and leading the guys in that other pit stop schedule so there's Clayman de Melo for Tony Kanaan a big last year if he can do it because he's first. car one lap back if he could move claiming De Melo and then catching a caution he's back on the lap of theleader and back in the loop very unlucky you got a flat tire i think other cars will pit pull ing left the signal ticking on his intent put his lap down yeah smart speed up going into four because i knew the speech slowed down dramatically smart work from veteran right hand Zachary Clayman de Melo the rookie brings the car Michael Caine and his strategist has been talking to him throughout the race giving him advice telling him what to do where to be on the track how to handle everything when you're a rookie this is exactly what you need and you don't have it here it's not a quick stop nine point four seconds but the job here for a rookie is just to get out clean now that they have it out of cycle in strategy so depending on how the precautions play out it may in a race where track position is important, he knows he could steal a lot of positions and in Indianapolis a lot of money by making that and it all depends on where the yellow falls or the inevitable yellow yes there's your new leader will power 37 year old from australia now living out of charlotte in his 11th 500 drives from roger penske we said before the race when you drive for Roger Penske or you expected to win the remaining 500 as an Indy 500 victory because he has won everything else and is definitely on the road Of course one of the fastest qualifiers, always great fun for us, will fight on the road to become he's a champion of this series because his oval track run wasn't what he needed to be Saw Man Riddle he's a champion he's a contender to win this Indy 500 Rick well you hadn't thought of this so willpower talk about the fact that in 2015 they had a great set of cars this year, he said he feels the cars are as good as they were in 2015, he lost that race, he finished second. to Juan Pablo Montoya well this year his quarterback John Bond Locke is the same quarterback that the quarterback was, so we will go into this race with an added advantage knowing what happened in 2015.
I have spoken to Will on several occasions over the last week and a half. will have been as calm as calm could be as calmly confident as confident can be we are on top yes its good all is well now i think we are on top he is a man who knows what he is looking at in this race and hopes that at end of the day got a really close look at a brick and would like to plant a big kiss on the road willpower is the leader of the race there are several stories from this day to talk about one the final race of danica patrick's career was coming here after racing at Daytona earlier this year in the Daytona 500, save me, Danika's double would be her last race, not the way she wanted the last ride of a race to end, but a crash into the outside wall on Turn number two on lap 68 would be the final circuit.
His mom Bev looking at Danica flew out of the car and she was fine. We've heard from her before. Patrick finished and will finish in 30th place and will miss his last Indy 500 you saw during our side-by-side coverage Kyle Kaiser's first Indy 500 comes to a finish for yukos racing team mechanical issue has taken oaks off the field third from Santa Clara California so now we have five cars out of the race out of the starting thirty three four of the five from crashes at Jones Takuma Sato James Davison also out of the race in crashes so the leading lab 22 of the 33 entrants who did the most laps today belong to ed carpenter, he was the dominant driver for the first 150 miles of the race and then passed him by Tony Kanaan after a couple restarts the first took the lead back the second who now no carpenter 4.7sec behind will drive with still a long way to go in this race and we spoke earlier on the show Drivers will be concerned about performance in the car 500+ miles chasing the track conditions chasing the heat we have here Eddie is no different than when you and I were driving if you only eight back to the pit lane tell me how you feel inside the car make the car fast and comfortable to you as Rick Mears always made a four-time winner here, I wanted the fastest car I had for the day at the end of the race, but I think this is a different race than we've seen in the past as much as these cars are very sensitive to shift when they're behind someone they have a lot of push but if you start to tune that too much you can get caught up like Eddie Jones and Danica Patrick did where they just lost control of the car and they were both Talking about push but what actually happened is that it doesn't look like they overcorrected and two went the other way so you can tune to be in front or you can tune to be in second and what if The next thing we've learned is whoever's leading the restart, you're a pushover that first turn some traffic here for the race leader next weekend a doubleheader in Detroit a Raceway at belle-isle Park The Verizon IndyCar Series Detroit brought free presented by Steel on Saturday and next Sunday weekend 3:30 both days on ABC's Willpower for Team Penske ahead 300 miles in the books behind after with their ABC station the race Indianapolis 500 just across your 300 mile mark here in Indianapolis on a 93 degree day it's a hot day there's the power of your leader Gus got caught in some traffic he saw that an advantage from four seconds it went down to one, now he's bumped it back up to three seconds after passing some of those lapped cars, so Carpenters' team radioed him about a fuel number they'd like. him to hit before he has to pit next time so carpenter just ahead of Simon Padgett Oh in the 22 running third former series champ another one who has been very confident during oval track week this year and it's Ryan hunter-reay and Elio Castro Devi's 4th and 5th honoree right there he moved very well don't count it he sure knows what he's doing to try and win this race and Marco Andretti just moved to pit lane Yes, and he's been happy with the car, but this is a bit out of sequence if you pull over. now you'll have two more stops until the end of the race Ryan hunter-reay for example his teammate he just got told that we only expect to do two more stops until the end so they're giving him sensation number two look this. he is chasing leo castroneves they are back in fifth cycled as low as 23rd in some of the green flag pit stop bus cycles we have had over the course of the race but very solidly up there all day though not actually competing for the lead anytime is winning he's gaining knowledge he's figuring out where to put his card if he's in the top three someone you'll have to race against and what I liked earlier is he said he didn't want to use the front wing anymore , he wants to improve the car by applying pressure to the tires and it was a smart move because it gives him the wing later in the race driving with Scott Dixon running sixth Dixon started in ninth position here is ed carpenter in 73 laps to go doc and very interesting , they really want you to hit a number fuel and you must be wondering if they are thinking of maybe getting some yellows and some e push the envelope to make it very high they didn't talk about making any wings Jane builds pressure good few mountains four seconds to the likes of Folsom also on and off pit road with ed carpenter this lap Simon passion Oh will peel off and get to the pit lane along with Elio Castroneves so the team Penske cars here will be running a 55 lap green flag race at this point since the last restart and here they are with 72 to go Rick yes Simon Maginot was actually complaining from a vibration a while back and they said look we're going to pit in just two or three laps to enjoy anything about him right now he was that might explain why he was eating as well as he could on the track, knock knock, Elio Castroneves oh Roger keeps talking about the big needle number it's getting a little slow and after a second or so but Roger said I'm very impressed you did a great job with the fuel e and from the leader will drive heads for the pit lane Ryan hunter-reay will take over the number one spot working his way up to his crew Rick will now drive they actually made some adjustments to the car in the first couple of stops but they didn't make any adjustments at the last stop they were also talking about fuel it will be heard on the radio and you are fine keep doing it the way you are doing it.
In the lane you see them reach for their helmet and rip off something which is a clear view visor strip that gets dirty like a race, they take it off during the pit stop so they have a clear path in front of them so they can set up the Ryan visor hunter-king follow Carrying Max Chilton down the pit lane with an incredible charge through the field. Look up Ryan Hunter-Reay. They are going to add a half turn of the front wing and have been training it. They have given you a fuel number. The team says no. necessarily has the fastest car as always obviously making hay when he has a second hit here Scott Dixon coming in for his stop and Dixon again we talked about him it's time to put water in the car we'll see her and Blair Julian and the crew chief outside front tire changer here's Dixon coming in and he wants to be spotless here I'd love to be in 7.2 seconds or less look at the clock to the left at the bottom of Harmon's screen for background on this very good pit stop prediction Tony Kanaan Alexander Rossi also wanted to come out of the pit lane below this lap.
Remember that Kanade, who was leading the race earlier, made a pit stop and then had to come back after suffering a puncture which sent him back at the end of the lead lap. , so Sebastien Bourdais is his leader in that 18 car he's running. behind Conor Daly who is now at the end of the lead lap with this cycle of pit stops Josef Newgarden runs second Graham Rahal third Robert Wiccans fourth Carlos muñoz fifth all of them in and out of the pit strategy than to some of the leaders like power and passion oh and the carpenter they've been doing and these different strategies have put a Honda engine in the lead so we'll see how strong it is what's the end of this race everybody drivers are making a plan in advance as to what they can do. didn't like it during weiss sexual weed drive that was more days on the radio saying pin this lap so we'll see him at Royal Serbia right out of pit lane so get to the point where they can do it in one more stop and we no I don't see black drivers going too slow from 200 mph to 60 as they go through the gap between the pit wall and the inside wall and then find their pit box over the maze of steps and cars a year ago I was standing on crutches today been standing on gas we're going to do half return Crow Wing car owner Dale Coyne is there.
He had to spray water on the fuel model to make sure it didn't have fuel. There is a half turn almost nine seconds. Ah, about a second. a fact when they wanted to be like that Josef Newgarden II is the leader there now the top five those top four on a different strategy to see how it plays out in the closing laps of the race The problem Sebastien Bourdais crashed and the caution was taken out at the Indy 500 turn four and it's sad to see someone who worked so hard to come back here and have such a great car to race in this you've got this dad it's nice to hang out there on the way home you have to come So this is the fourth caution of the race.
These cars are so hard to control when on the edge. When you're behind someone. You cut yourself in dirty air and have a little too much direction. Slapper while last year's Univ had eight hundred thousand gp. Look for more downforce to help you see that he barely went sideways and then lost control. All of this is happening at 220 miles per hour. Cars are so safe today. You see that white barrier that we have in front of the concrete wall. The safest barrier. what we see at the top there look at the steering wheel right now almost in front almost get it almost get it and it comes back the other way i've lived which then starts to come in what you call eddy like you mentioned now a tank hit are you ready to the ride and you want it to go in after that more secure barrier that was put up there designed by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The steel foam energy reduction really helps soften the blow. they're going to use they have to get the right amount of downforce in the front 61 laps to go someone said they needed a caution to get to the end on fuel we'll talk about the next cleanup going on here at Indianapolis Motor Highway th The fourth caution of the 500 mile race afterthat Sebastien Bourdais crashed in turns three and four. The lead will power Tony Kanaan who is now at the end of the lead lap and will be able to take a wave around the safety car and rejoin at the finish. of the peloton and lap of the leader after getting a flat tire while competing for the lead earlier, Yanis's caution at the time really sets a fight to the finish strategy for some people, yes and you mentioned there was a radio communication from someone who needed a yellow pit which was Marco Andretti so this gives him a chance to get back in the loop it also helps his teammate Ryan hunter-reay who was saving a bit of fuel now he will be able to use more fuel and put the speed on the track good so it will be interesting to see some of the people stalled with about 70 laps to go 59 to go now who is going to win the Indianapolis 500 still with a lot of doubt 57 laps to go at the indianapolis 500 our broadcast presented by firestone abc live at the indianapolis motor speedway for 54 consecutive years, what i earlier called a tactical race, true It really plays out that way now, with this amount of time left, Rick, that's exactly right, you know it was a dangerous situation for the willpower in the fuel that they expected.
I'll make it now with all this yellow. I just checked with strategist John Boss Lug and said one more stop, can you do it that fast? I'm not in his head thinking that's the plan. him a lap or two later by the way they gave him a little advice drink from the bottle yeah let's talk to Doc this yellow is a great red carpet shot I just spoke to Tim Boyles they would have been very , very close and it probably would have been a lap shy to get it done with this yellow now they can stretch it a little past lap 165 and if they're careful in the draft they can get it done in one more fuel stop they know they have horses. power and they have a strong car the question is will they have fuel this we have given you enough fuel to have a chance to win this race again with the variable setup engine mappings fuel consumption ratios and so on how fast can you go and still have the fuel to get to that stop more if we don't see more yellows the other sign on that to ring it's not just a feeling to do it but you have to go running at the end you need a hundred percent Fuel in a percentage of horsepower if you're accelerating and the guy behind you has fuel to burn.
You're sitting white here we're going to restart with 55 laps to go in the race. front lost hunter-reay position with a move on the passion oh the passion offends him castroneves tries to attack rossi on the outside xander rossi with the run move you just don't do that with these new cars but never got it wide you can say we're coming to the end of the race But hear Dixon hit the throttle that's how hard it is to drive these new cars but he makes it through a cautionary issue LEL Castroneves against the wall Castroneves running in fifth and now he crashed out of the race Roger Penske went off to look and say what happened and he, as you mentioned, as you get closer to the end of the race, the drivers are thinking about the position of the track, hear the roar of the crowd for a spider man hopefully we'll see him again at the speedway look for the yellow car wow same that's the same thing we've been seeing all day nine hunter-reay directly behind him and Alexander Ross made some brilliant moves to not get caught up in that blackboard wreck it's coming around you can't control that we're running downhill listen just miss loss of grip so hard as a driver cause you know you're upside down and you're about to hit something, just sit back and wait this would be a good sight of hunter-reay and these people this is just a reaction It's not thinking about the smoke Is it there?
You die through it. You hope you have gone to the right place. Spotters are up or yelling at their drivers. he can hear the fans, but that's not how he wanted this Indy 500 and sure as hell, Rick Mears in the white shirt, one of Castroneves' spotters and four-time champion, as well as AJ Foyt, four-time champion Al Unser the another four -time champion and for Castroneves his ninth attempt at that fourth win will dry up today watch real time honoré decision young now he won't stop for a moment on his walk down pit road very frustrating when you get out of the car what happened , yeah, Ryan moved well and I got the timing where I thought I was probably going to win a wide inning, it was probably a little, you know, the dust and the tires and then as soon as 23 got up I was good to go. when trying to pass the time but then a rear just gave up so he didn't go exp. ect, he never had any sign, but um, it's frustrating, the car was good, definitely, it was very difficult, but please, Roger, we have to go back.
I know you want to come back. it's getting serious yeah of course i mean he's lost 60 laps to go 50 laps to go now i start pushing and we're saving up for you and yeah people start like me going for it and that's why I saw the opportunity that's the time to go but misjudge the tires a little good everyone here too Elio wants the security team to come back too trying to get Elio to make the trip to the Castroneves medical center he wants to go out and talk to his team first and thank you for stopping by to talk to us so fit race yellow flag is out four time champion Elio Castroneves cleaning up underway we're back after a word from your station ABC talking coverage on OU Castroneves a popular guy here getting a lot of coverage on his way back to the Medic to the Center after crashing in the race crashing has been a topic of the day in this 500 mile race there have been five different accidents in the race so far, one involving driver Roger Penske that he was calling the strategy for and it really has been the story of this new IndyCar moving around is as difficult for the drivers on a hot day like this as some of them speculated that could be and we saw Takuma Sato running after James Davidson, it can be seen that he goes up for a ride, a new Davison is also going Slow for the pace to go to Sado.
There's no place left to go. nowhere to finish except on the wall but they are so caught off guard all these turns are our our our not characteristic of these cars and ten laps after the jones crash danica patrick's racing career came to a head end with that, she looks a lot like Edie Jones in that. scenario the vacuum took a turn as we mentioned very similar to the previous accident but there the drivers we have had in any NASCAR or IndyCar sport got out of the car a little problems on the pit road for Zach Beach yikes acting all capable of handling that situation effectively but like dry brake difficulty spraying some fuel on the hot car but knowing Sebastien Bourdais didn't hear him in a crash on lap 138 almost got him so he got away and spun many times before reaching the wall, which is always good because it takes speed away.
They started this race in fifth position, but his day didn't end the way he wants, dropping back to 28th and Elio Castroneves. who started in eighth position running in the top five and had that crash in turn four, we heard him say now was the time to get more aggressive approaching the end of the race, look at this as a driver, his weight or the impact over there. it is and roger penske told Elio if you win the race i'll bring you back next year you heard Elio say roger roger during the please bring me back so let's see if he comes back in 2019 dr. standing there roger elliot was doing everything he could he wanted you to be able to keep that promise if he wanted to come back next year roger he kept saying what he got another car roger roger i want to come back well we certainly did well on that for sure you know he's done a great job sitting on that restart he had a good run and he gets this cut a little high there and you know you don't see a guy like that lose it very often but what a great guy what did he do for our team for so many years and you know he's the klumps hurdler and he's one of my best guys so I've got three good ones there in a B and the green flag is back doc reboot and willpower will try to fend off that hungry bunch of people behind him watch alexander rossi trying to fight his way up in that blue and yellow and he's on the high side again and i can't believe he did it he got two riders in two quarters rossi who started penultimate imo in this race fighting to get to the front.
Well, he's starting to put all his cards on the table. Oh wall trouble wise Karam and another cautionary flag what brilliant driving caught the car back against the wall and this is going to be a longer clean up. a piece of rossi driving at the top around one and two and it's not the first time he's done it, it's the second time I really don't know what happened let's see if we find out what happened as the young driver from nazareth Pennsylvania found the wall, the same thing that happened to everyone else. I can start to turn around when he hit the wall he just ripped the right rear tire off the car and after that once he hit the wall everything started coming out before he even showed up.
Right along with Scott Nixon for Howard for you, there's some amazing stuff happening in these reboots as the final event approaches. Eddie, as you mentioned, all the drivers are thinking about the position of the track you want to go the farthest P in the field as far as you can because these cars are hard to pass and everyone knows it's time to put the show on the worst part of that accident was the rear tire bouncing, yes, certainly, but the day of wise caroms is over at this 500 and the car count in the garage continues to rise after a series of incidents scattered throughout the race that will empower race leader under yellow with 45 laps to go Marco Andretti 'zv of this sixth caution very intense final stages of the Indianapolis 500 a race a year ago we are big brats and honda passes were the norm nowadays cars with less downforce require a delicate balance that requires the drivers to have incredible touch who would have thought that Alexander Rossi after a problem in qualifying would have has started in the middle of the back row and now being in third place with 43 laps to go very aggressive just driving the car where he wants high or low that means the driver is very confident with the cornering of the car Ethan watch this through grass below smashing amazing this is the motion of the race right here look at all these cars passing by outside the outside is slippery it's dusty and he keeps going barely makes it but does our firestone woman of the race then next restart where he tries to get in his Andretti Autosport teammate hunter-reay who closes the door for him to get out, he goes past hunter-reay in one and past passion Oh in two and look how close. those tires are all this at 250 20 miles an hour and this is the area that everyone has been spinning oh look at that what fun is that that is an amazing mix of talent and pure courage well they have this perfect 27 car for their driver who is pulled as much as he can from him yawn yes they do and that's exciting for us i don't know if it's exciting for ravenn's words on the radio it's a crazy time driving outside obviously the cars run good yes the cars are running good I mean obviously when we got a lot of traffic back at the beginning of the race it was hard to know exactly what we had but you know now we have a few less cars around us yeah the cars are running good alex does in the pace, so we'll see what we can do here in the last 40 laps, you were just on the radio telling him where they're sweeping because he does these outside moves that obviously play into your hand with a clean track, yes, I mean, the more information you have. he works well, he knows what options he has high or low, so we're just trying to make sure he knows everything he needs to know, can you win it?
Well, I said in the flying laps when we were talking about Rossi that if he was going to win, he would have to make history today. He started 32nd. No one ever won the deepest 500 miles than 28th and that was very long. a while ago including the first 500 mile race and you can listen to alexander ross and right now saving fuel by accelerating then grabbing just doing that scott dixon is very good to come back but also what i notice guys when i saw this with willpower we saw him with Alexander Rossi raising his hand out of the cockpit only to start having the wind pass over his body to try and cool himself off trying to get some airflow through the car in this temperature 92 degree vibe we have, you know we've been driving when it'sbeen 80 to 85 in our discussions this morning before we got here he's just looking for airflow because yellow is when you start thinking about how hot you are when it turns green you forget everything when you're between the three of you first ones around here may have a volcano exploding and I don't think you'd feel anything Rossi is on top right now he's Rob said he's on a pace he's the pace making his own pace he decides where he puts his car and pulls off with his anyone who tries that is spinning and crashing the big cas troneves, who knows his way around this, he tried a move maybe not so aggressive and he didn't get away and yet Rossi did it and he knows it and everyone else before him knows it.
One lap for Scott Dixon and whistling a fuel strategy game here by Mike Holland the Ganassi team 40 laps to go in the race while they say no one is better at saving fuel in fact doing fuel on Scott Dixon now you think about this 39 laps to go go in who knows everyone else has done it to make one more pit stop around 170 or complete it by fueling up seeing the number Mike hull told me this morning someone who could sneak out with an ear knows how to fuel and he winked at me while his guy is the best in the business i think they're betting on another yellow you see that tube coming out of scott dixon's helmet that's the water tube the drivers have press a button on your steering wheel and the water comes in you have a nice drink but the problem is right now at this point in the race if you want the water pretty hot we had reports that maybe your bottle system water wasn't working but certainly water or no water the hottest day we've ever had in the makes us here let's see the power restart. jump over carpenter going to lose another position to rossi alexander rossi on the move again on the outside going for second place carpenter carpenter no one to get in rossi still uncomfortable leaving two big slides there for mateus tied up wiccans had to check look come on tony Kanaan, try to fight your way to the front in the 14 car.
Are you kidding me? This is crazy stuff that put Connaught in place for the night, but he's still way back in line. Graham Rahal just went out and chose. take a spot Josef Newgarden in that silver car trying to pick up a squad and kanade go again so now you're someone like rossi or you're someone like Kanaan trying to get as much as you can or you're going back on fuel so you spent LaHood for Ross and for example so you spend less time sitting at that pit stop you know you're coming let's see if you can gain some track that way y'all interested to see some cars can run all that line where the second group is starting to arrive.
So the white car we're actually doing it just now I was really surprised once this track starts coming in with no top group maybe they have an option there we have yet to see the car that has been running second . past the car he was leading when Carpenter was a leader, power didn't pass, a carpenter is behind, couldn't pass power, and except Reese, three stars, but now we're past the restart every time they come in they're on a pace after after two or three laps the leader moves away from second place although Rossi sure looks strong in the middle of the curves interestingly this week he was doing a small survey asking the drivers if they think that unlike other years a driver will start to be able to get away and get away from the guy in the second half of the field said no way if some of the other guys said I think that's possible so it will be interesting to see how much space a guy like willpower can stretch here we look back through that race order at the top of the screen with all the cautions and accidents we've had the different pit stop times we had during During the long green flag run that they have now come back together because of the series of yellows some people have really benefited and made the most of it, first of all by losing the Rex, but like Graham Rahal for example, in other words, he started xxx, now a longtime sixth in the field and Nash being very smart on the track. working with the team we talked about to improve the car has been struggling with a bad handling car all week, but now that the United Rentals machine in charge of Granma is doing a tremendous job and getting into contention, no lightning.
He does it in the race, it surprises me, he's like a tiger when he has to catch up with another, he's in a similar race, starting from the back, but the circumstances have worked. Jr. Hildebrand in the '66 Hildebrand started the race 27th now he's running 10th in that blue and orange car in white so Hildebrand for the whole Indianapolis based Reinbold team running just the 500 they've worked it out and there there is he always seems to be in the top 10 last year he was in the top 5 and they got a late penalty for a problem had to take a passing penalty which dropped him to 15 very smart racing driver you can almost say he's an engineer in a way mode because the way his mind works told me earlier in the week it's been harder coming here as a part time driver but also with a part time team so give all the credit to me where they are now on the grid when will the last pit stops occur? we'll make the first move and don't forget scott dixon in the back running 2 seconds slower than the leaders every lap saving fuel willpower gets out of the lead here in the 102nd race in the internet 500 a 6.6 second stop is regressing trying to get back in the lead of this race Marco Andretti Josef Newgarden hit who moved the lap before junior Hildebrand the previous lap here is Ryan hunter-reay dodging fourth position Tony Kanaan following inside done Ryan hunter-reay is taking this opportunity we see another 6.6 second stop he's obviously been very loose in traffic they have a chance to make an adjustment Rick Tony Kanaan is working on getting back to the front of the pack he probably needs one more caution to get it out you see they did it just a wing tweak there he's been able to make progress on those restarts he's a master at it he'll probably need one more to pull this off get the caution not for fuel just for track position and another chance to restart to try to take advantage of here is ed carpenter from race leader graham rahal follows him down pit lane doc and carpenter saved fuels that can fit in the laps later because he wants to burn fuel they can in this class tend to run out of willpower and the company talked about four tires they have to make it completely engaging there's the front and Bram Ray Hall follows the carpenter back onto the track so that now Rossi is the race leader with Padgett Oh mooyah Serbia Wiccans and a few others on a different pit stop program here comes Rossi yawn and they are going to change these tires to a bigger stagger which means the car will turn in more positive on the inside rarely a bit they are picking just the one on the right 6.5 seconds Robin where is Alexander Rossi?
Back to racing, how all these cars blend together after the pit stops, the whole cycle will be fascinating to watch here at Padgett. Hillier don't do it Carlos Munoz takes the passionate lead all the way to the other end of the pit lane to Team Penske the pass from Simon you know in 2015 he had a killer car a car he thought could win the race he was actually playing with elcampo but you made a mistake hit another car your goal today don't make a single mistake a little more stop a full second on your teammate at this point in the race that time makes a world of difference soccer field the second and put yourself on the distance of a football field behind that teammate who lost the two seconds here is Carlos munoz from the head gone and Carlos of course also at the end statement ready he has been very happy with this car he runs that single line in which it seems to go very low. the right rear is the last to be done and that slows them down a little bit to the back eight point six seconds there's the two football fields you talked about yeah they cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time at 200 miles per hour. their orioles Serbia is now the leader of the race, remember I talked about Serbia getting a lap down and sitting out under caution. 0 has been shuffling up and down the standings ever since based on the pit stop cycle and strategy cycles, but now the veteran from Spain who now lives in Los Angeles is the race leader at Indianapolis with 23 for the final.
Spencer Pickett right in front of him. I remember I had a passing penalty earlier for speeding on pit road that has Pickett back in 21st on the undercard. Sorry Scott about the cars that pitted. the cars that faced willpower is seventh now guess who is sixth Scott Dixon and I've been telling you we won't be seeing Dixon on pit road for the rest of this race unless something goes wrong now the only downside for Dixon is that he's going to get more laps on his tires if it's a shootout at the end of these last few pit stops we've seen we shouldn't have to worry about people wasting fuel they'll be able to run on all fuel all the power and don't forget there's usually a knob in the steering wheel that advances the spark in the engine gives you a little more power you can't run all day but you know I talked about this the other day no doubt we'll be there for the last 20 laps excitement but he will change his fuel like we used it because maybe Dickson is trying to.
Alexander Rossi did it for the first time at the Annapolis 500, which was Dixon passing Clayman D'Mello for fifth, there's the leader, Robert, witness who just passed or ale Serbia for the race leader as we came back and had a Look at Scott Dixon's position on the racetrack, you listen to the instructions from the Wiccans team, so he's going to relinquish the lead and he can lead his first Indianapolis where he races, which is something that's always great and it becomes part of what they call the leading circle club even though it was under a different fuel strategy but still nice to have your name on that board inside Serbia Oh Stefan Wilson Jack Harvey those top four here come Wiccans of the ra ce led returning first place to Serbia 20 laps to go in the indianapolis 500 in the final miles of the indianapolis 500 our broadcast presented by firestone in our coverage of the do the ABC side you just watched will pass scott dixon so power who he faced with the twenty nine laps to go the highest of the cars we know can run hard to the finish but serbian oriole is the lead and steph wells in his second and Jack Harvey is third they all entered on lap 157 157 and 158 Will we see another change lately in this race as we have seen in the last eight years of the event?
What about Serbia, where they had their fuel strategy on the situation? I just spoke to strategist David Derek Davidson and he said we need a yellow so they're telling Oriole okay push push but unless they get a yellow for his body in English they won't make it to the end, but if they get that warning, obviously leading the Indy 500, it's right where they want it. be and it's a matter of fresh tires a and how many other people understand all of that kind of stuff that could come into play, so there's Serbia running 4.2 seconds behind Serbia, Stefan Wilson, 28, originally from Sheffield, England, now of Denver in his second 500 start for Andretti Autosport. well Justin Wilson's younger brother lost his life and a racing accident at an event in Pocono donated organs that helped five others after that accident. he after what happened to his brother Stefan was supposed to have run his second 500 race a year ago but was asked to give up the seat when Formula 1 star Fernando Alonso became available, he did, he was promised that would have a ride this year michael andretti made good on that promise and here's wilson running second with 13 laps to go doc and said i've never felt closer to my late brother than today with this track i know i wouldn't want this race one day .
He said that he is taking care of me. He will run with me. He said I have nothing after today. gotta roll two dice whatever i can do to have a chance to win this race will happen for me and him crash doc tony kanaan is in trouble and against the wall and the caution is out with 12 laps to go good new race , seventh yellow flag of the 500 and now Serbian Oriol will have a decision in his hand, as well as the others who run on the leader's lap, thenew tire speed vs track position and the few laps remaining in this race by the time we go back to green what happened to Kanaan lapping - caught something else like the car to start doesn't move just a little bit Coming out of the turn back it started to move a bit it looked like it had a correction it almost caught it and then it got away it almost didn't make it around here that's the same thing but you're hopeful you can be as hopeful as you want once I stray you're gone you heard him stepping on the gas aggressively he was looking for a draft going down the stretch to turn three hoping to pick up a few positions and it wasn't like that find out what day Tony Kanaan had remember he was leading the race vying for the win one of the strongest cars in the field just after a series of pit stops got a flat and a tire had to fit again fell off the lap down got the lap back More was charging again to try and stay in contention for the win and now his race car is wrecked and he's in the safety car for a check but he put in a great performance didn't he? boy it was solid so now there are 11 laps left in this race on the lead lap there are 19 cars which is a lot of traffic for Oriole Serbia to think about giving up track position to try to come back on fresh tires there you go there's a decision good You really can't keep up with the safety car, but John he? he's getting the lead right now Derek Davidson is on the radio right now with Oriole, okay you said you wanted to scream, you got it, can you go all the way? was save save save right now guards under caution will have enough to step on the gas if he gets pressure from behind yes we think yes we think we are good Wow exactly what this team wanted for Oriole Serbia and who knows how they make a tiebreaker if you think A couple of those other restarts were wild you ain't seen nothing yeah I think there's a big chance we'll get another yellow oh this is going to be crazy these cars are so hard to drive right on the limit. keep catching everyone out of tech to catch a driver like Conan in turn two it takes a special set of circumstances well when you look at Serbia Wilson and Harvey or the top three and then behind you when you look in the mirrors you see strength will scott dixon edie carpenter alexander rossi hunt ryan er-reay simon passion oh not just champs there but indy 500 winners you think they ain't gonna come out I look for it for five wide dammit once in a while dixon don't have to go slow because you've got some fuel on your back in the tank and you can go as fast as you want and that's going to make a difference and then there's the willpower one of the dominant cars of the race sitting there in fourth Rick actually his quarterback John bas Locke was just telling him you've got a lot of speed, a lot of power, let's talk about what he's going to do on this restart, can he outrun these three guys, we think he can, he was running really fast talking right now i think we have something for him to clear i hope they need to go green soon because the guys in front of us still need to save a little bit but we were a couple miles an hour faster it's been great all day great stops you know Robbie on our fuel and Dave on engineer it's been a solid effort so far it would be a shame if we did I don't get it because it's been a really good race for us but that's Indy so here's the ask inside, outside, which way do you go in that racing truck, he kept talking. he's talking about both so we'll see if it's going to be exciting actually it will be that I think that's a euphemism for John Vause I record just one other driver we want to talk about in this line of cars that pink and black car over there number 60 Jack Harvey driving for michael Shank former driver who made a name for himself building a team in sports car racing at one point mortgaged his home to keep his team alive now his dream of owning IndyCar here for a second year Harvey former winner on the oval at the freedom 100, the Indy light series race that they have here on carb day, doing just his second 500 mile race and here he finds himself running third inside the last ten laps, What do you think is going through his head, do you remember what he said? last year a lot of time with michael shank i can't believe they're here it's a dream come true but there's no doubt you've got butterflies in your stomach and as we look here on the left hand side of the car the mirror is missing for Oreo Serbia now as leader Eddie I'm not sure I look in the mirrors that much and also remember you have the spotters up top and turn one and turn three so the driver knows if there's someone looking at the high side the low side but right now when it's time if it turns green, there are the spotters lined up there for all the teams.
I wouldn't be looking at the mirrors at all. I'll be putting my foot on the accelerator. a signal to go at the start/finish line we'll turn green with seven laps to go in the 500 Wow and the heart rate is pumping right now and we know we're back to a point that Eddie said today Scott and his thoughts on this, but as difficult once they resolve to pass, since it has been how aggressive everyone has been. na be in the green flag drop don't even weigh the risk to reward ratio just go for it we hear John Boss Law talk about willpower go up or down you're going to take any chance that's in front of you ti because he wants to dispatch one car a lap so he can get out front and take off from Scott Dixon but member Scott Dixon doesn't have as much fuel but I think that will also give power to the driver who is leading Serbia.
It can be a bit sneaky in the way it takes off because if you take off where they expect you to at the restart, you'll pass one we saw earlier in the race, so you have to find a way to put just enough distance between you and the cars. behind but his problem is that there are a lot of guys behind him that I'm thinking the exact same thing, well the other side of that is also that wherever you are with willpower, those three guys in front don't eat a lot of experience except for serbian oriole if there is something going on in front of it you have to get over that accident too so coming to the green flag how long will we run under green with all that aggressiveness?
Another factor to try to get as much as you can as fast as you can. they're going to pass smoothly on the first restart these 300,000 people have stood up getting to the green flag on a late restart to see who wins in Indianapolis didn't have enough didn't have enough here comes Wilson looking in the poll for leading Barbie on interior Wilson enters Butler had to check how much that will cost him I think Dixon is going to get around him Stefan Wilson leads the Indianapolis 500 amazing powers they will have to start passing cars there is nothing they laugh to go I have to move through Serbia fast here power looking at the trade rick is out and he will get to third six laps to go the other thing for will power he has newer tires on his car for about 20 laps so its definitely nice to have more grip almost close enough to make a pass at the end of this level, but not entirely awkward another six feet without fracking Harvey go look I won't have it in this set of four rtos now its about timing sit here for a moment then have the goss look at the throttle you lost they lost time on that left your right hand went down to make an adjustment on the sway bar to change the handling of your car what a story for Stefan Wilson has enough fuel oh he's going to present the willpower take the lead assisting Annapolis with four laps to go everywhere dude this is where it's hardest for the team and the spouse you drive the car you know what he's doing out there, the team right now just sees coming back to the front all the time to do the same Liz, she'll just wonder if you'll make it to the end, we'll check her speed, her last lap was a 2:16 so I have a card three laps to go that lap was a 220 which compared to Mackenzie's race pace for a long time there's his blistering he's really quick in the car trailing behind only at 2:16 this is power the force za of will of the race for several years talked about having a hard time handling the mental aspect of racing the pressure situations had a hard time getting in position to win a championship had to lose one to win one he finally won that championship so the uncle of oval track racing said not a good old track racer is a supreme road horse racer worked on it worked on it losing to Montoya in 2015 here but finishing Second RBI will boost the confidence level at this track and now here it is.
I've told you before, so smooth, so calm and confident all month and now just one lap away from ticking the last box of Corinna's goals. short and that box you talked about we mentioned earlier in the show if you drive from Roger Penske West I'm typing boats as he pulls up for a turn to go the white flag is waving but you need m make sure you don't go the 500 from Indianapolis if they want to keep their job with team Penske Barty the car back is Charlie Kimball they hear the clear radio call for 40 cars to quarters for the fans to stand up waving and cheering that he will never perform the same again point from now on will be willpower 2018 Indianapolis 500 winner The power of checker 5 gets me to win it Roger talks on the radio about his work His wife Lyz enjoys watching her husband become the 72nd driver in win the indy 500 dr.
Liz just won the Indy 500 you're excited what were you taking on that last card? I knew I could do it I had a little weird call me at home in quiet moments he shared with you how much he wanted this race so much he did to Herman for this go celebrate thank you how about that Alan Liz husband is for the Indy 500 winner I think we saw before for Junior balancer is Indianapolis you just don't know what it means, well that's a good illustration, right there it's 5:25 in the morning in Australia. I bet there are a lot of people cheering and about to start a great day.
The energy of the celebration was stored there twenty years ago. That was you. How does it feel? He is a horrible dancer. Dr. Wu just starts over. I'm so glad to have witnessed the time when willpower goes such a long way from Toowoomba Australia to Victory Lane. He gets a hug from Simon Padgett. Oh, let's talk about what this means, what a long journey. I had to go to this place today, man. I just can't believe it. My attitude changed a lot after the hairdresser. Very positive and I had a great mother. I just can't believe it.
I have to thank Roger Penske Horizon and my parents for allowing me to get to this point this is it I just can't describe it I feel like collapsing I want to cry oh my god I couldn't stop screaming at the idea I can't quite believe it so you're leading with just one handful of laps to go and the yellow flag comes out what's going through your mind i'm like i have to catch these guys i don't know how much fuel they have but i'm alone this is a reset of my life and then i'm going to go on and reduce like a man i think that i'm going to win this i'll keep screaming with one the girls screaming like a man i have this amazing It's okay, you've had some low moments in your life.
Things you missed. We were so close. Does that make this that much sweeter for a guy who's your age and 37? Win this Indy 500. I was wondering if he would do it. ever won it and thoughts went through his mind during the month. I guess it's like my career. I've had so many wins, so many polls, but everyone was always talking about the 500 and I wanted to, I can't, I just couldn't imagine winning. a race in front of a crowd like this so many people it's amazing what i love the borgwarner trophies behind you your face is going to be on it congratulations willpower roger penske on his 17th win as owner of the indianapolis 500 you know what made him happy the team worked so hard on these race cars so hard what a reward and the driver the dream is true willpower you are an Indianapolis 500 winner what a day what a race and still much more to come from Brickyard strength of will started this race for third position leaves 59 of t he 200 laps and led the most counted will drive firestone race enduring driver you get the feeling from some of the reactions we've seen this could certainly be held for a while knows that it is appreciated that a great tribe and all the traditions that accompany winning at Brickyard will fuel the victory of the NGO The president of the Pen team ske, Tim Cinela, and the captain himself, so a look at the unofficial results of the Indianapolis 500 will boost their race winner, ed carpenter, came up short Scott Dixon finished third, a lot of carsChevy and Honda passed by, but when you look up Alexander Rossi, he was marching across the field.
It would have been different if he had only had a few laps. he never gets it, but what really impressed me with Stefan Wilson was that he came within a very few laps of finishing in the top three and the drivers who struggled in the race number of drivers with rashes which included Kanaan Castroneves per day and the danica patrick's last race ended up in the wall outside of turn number two the final three ed carpenter with his best finish in the 500 but not the place he wanted john and ed carpenter with the day usually second to any other race it's almost like a win but you tried this one you were so strong in the beginning what happened next i'm not entirely sure i mean we lost we lost the lead and one of the right sequences to watch out for. the data and see if i shot wrong on that thought the guy's stops were great all the time there was one of them on one of those laps i caught a weird traffic chain you know and that's all you need to know the position of the track was so Critical that you know at the end of the race everyone was saving fuel and I knew well the guys were telling me well and Simon where am I going better than me at that point and the first restart we had when I was behind I did a good race and I think could have passed i followed it and said i'll sit here and save some fuel and work on it in the swap then we got all those yellows and then it stopped being a fuel race so that's the only time in hindsight now where I kicked myself but at the time it seemed like the right call but in hindsight I should have taken the opportunity in track position and worried about fuel after the fact but ro yeah, like you said, it's in a couple of days I'll feel better about this finish, you know, I'm still extremely proud of the entire Red Carpenter Racing team.
I think we probably had to have been one of the two more consistent guys. You know, day after day, different conditions this month. Very proud of that wish, I wish my teammates. I could have been there a bit longer too, but it's been a while since I've had a top 5 here so it feels good to finish in a good position, very happy to know and me, you know I spoke quite a bit for the competitors. and when he first came here after the UN he hated ovals and now he loves them and he and I race together someday could you drive for me I don't think we'll have an IndyCar ruined by tampering but congratulations good job well done thank you I think it's going to being a popular win in many of the areas where he is surely in victory lane will power the winner of the 102nd Indianapolis 500 race, plus return live at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will power his wife Liz, his family in the traditional victory lap around the Speedway in the convertible, live on the public address system so that all the fans around this huge Speedway can see the winner and, no doubt, see the joy on his face, since the force of will has obtained its first victory in this great race.
Final thoughts on the 102nd 500. What a popular winner. I know that in Australia they will drink a lot of beer in the next few days because they know how to party, but it was amazing. The ending was amazing. Yeah it was something else in the cars the cars were so hard to drive I think they brought the cars back to where they belong and if you're going to go fast you're going to have to take risks because sometimes the risk is worth it but sometimes it's not . you know when you think of willpower he came to team Penske in Long Beach in 2009 as a replacement for Elio Castroneves who couldn't make it to the event Roger Penske saw the talent in the young driver and decided he had to keep it somehow somehow ended to be on the team very soon they're full time and look what he's accomplished now remember I said earlier on the show keep your job at Team Penske sooner or later you need to win the Indianapolis 500 I think willpower can be safe pick up picked it picked it a week ago we go every two minutes he tells us look who's leading look who's leaving our expert driver here time you talk to while other crews are trying to figure out car balance what to do what to do yeah , we're good, we're there, we have a good feeling, I trust it's good, I mean confident driving so all week you saw it in his driving. r, particularly on that last restart when he had to have it and now look at him making the trip around the Speedway as the winner of the Indianapolis 500, well never, he's always been very fast, but as you mentioned during the broadcast.
Allen is now very focused and doesn't make any mistakes for a driver. I think the talent he has. So many races win so many polls that more championships, maybe more Indy 500, are needed ahead. My favorite shot is to win in the winners circle and they focused on his eyes he looked like a crazed animal he was so full of energy I can't believe it well he's too amazing it was great to see him now as he always seems to do another 500 in the books that don't drop us and send us away talking g about what a great day that was and Willpower celebrates winning his first win in the Indianapolis 500 and you know a constant and ABC's coverage of the race for the last 54 years has been that It's not about us, it's about the people in the race and so we leave you with a very simple one to watch and a celebration of all the traditions that are the Indianapolis 500 and all the joy that comes with winning the greatest show. of racing that was performed today by Willpower and the Penske team.
