So today we are on a fun and exciting road trip. We headed about 3 hours south to pick up our

solar

panels

. It's the last piece we need to convert our cabin and tent to

solar

energy. I think Ryan already has everything else. supplies and our setup

will

be a little unique in that we won't be completely off the grid for the cabin and

work

shop our house

will

definitely build. I'll have Ryan explain exactly what we mean by that, we're intentionally going to be on the grid still with our cab and we're going to set up a grid tie system for net metering, so the idea will be that we have

panels

that go through an inverter that connect to a panel and return energy through a meter. that can roll back into the grid once we build our house and move in, it will stay there and continue to print money for us, so the idea is that we go ahead and do it now, neutralize our costs and get it to make money. that in the future we pay for that cabin when we are not using it.

The nice thing about that too is that we don't have to have a big battery set up, it's a little bit simpler setup, so we're excited about that. be fun yes the system won't have battery backup it will store power on the grid and then draw it off at night when we need it that's how

describe it you can't really store power on the grid but basically You're selling it again and then you're buying it again and hoping at the end of the day you don't have to pay a bill, so we're about 30 minutes away from getting to our location, we'll see. what

look like there, they're okay, we have all our solar panels for the way home and luckily Ryan noticed that they were starting to change a little bit so we pulled over to the side of the road, luckily we got at least this one Stack Down. this stack is still holding strong so we're going to change our strategy a little bit, get these guys back up and hopefully that'll be it for our trip home, woohoo woohoo well we got back last night today we have a bit.

There's a little bit of daylight left after

so let's start sorting through these solar panels and make our game plan and take inventory, not all of them are in perfect condition even though we pulled over to the side of the road and We rearranged everything, they settled down a bit. Again you can see this one slipped and caused some damage here which is definitely a bummer luckily we got a great deal on all of these so I'm not going to cry too much about it and we have extra panels knowing that maybe some of them don't will work, so although the power company recommended transporting them this way, I wouldn't recommend it at least based on our experience, so I think if we had to do it all over again, we would stack the panels vertically or create a box structure to keep them all together for the trip so I learned my lesson again, luckily these weren't very expensive at all and looking at them closely there are some hairline cracks when we pick them up so you can see they are just a pair.

Because these are essentially solar panels from the Ding and Dent section of the commercial solar fields in Minnesota, they just had some little cosmetic problems with them and that's why they couldn't use them in the solar fields and that's how we got a spectacular deal for electronics should all of them will be great at least in most of them and we will definitely test them and one thing that will come is that we will do some repairs to seal the cracks that are in any of the panels so stay tuned and make sure to subscribe. So you can see a process of how we are going to fix these solar panels and of course make sure they work, so the installation will definitely happen as well.

One thing you are going to notice and what was a surprise to us is that they are not all the same, you can see that there are many different patterns here, we have at least four or five different types of solar panels and as soon as we realized that , as we were looking at them in the field, we realized that we needed to get a lot more than we initially planned because you want a string of exactly the same solar panels to meet the inverter requirements that you can't mix and match as well as we would like , so hopefully from this whole pile we can find a bunch of similar solar panels that can go together and hopefully they all work and aren't too damaged, so let's start sorting, yeah, so I see that we have three stacks, four stacks, technically two stacks of good ones here, okay? a bunch of good ones that we're not going to use here and then just a bunch of bad ones, okay, this one up, don't step on them, go over there, go over there, go over there, go over there, funny boy, the dents are well, I think the dents are fine, that's right, Ding and Dent, no, you can't see it.
Dam, looks pretty good, minor scratches, this one actually looks pretty good, just that one scratch, okay, so that's N. I did the math last night and we can run up to 12 of these on a string, so we'll have nine that will be really good and that will take us very far, so let's go through this stack, yes, this one is perfect, now yes, watch out, this one is also good, yes, yes. this one looks good too yeah so let's leave it aside because I think this one is repairable and usable but I think we have more that are better this one doesn't make the cut this one looks a little rough so this one didn't work so well there are also some cracks up here this one could be salvageable, we could repair it, but it won't be on our a list, so we'll put it on our b list, we'll build another one. be smart, yeah, sure, yeah, it's like perfection is rough, everything is discarded here, let's put this in the possibly disposable pile, like there this one looks good, but then you can see that these are more or less perfect, There really is nothing wrong with them.
Also, maybe a very small scratch there, they're definitely going to work well, this one looks like take a look at that one, yeah, okay, very good, we

only

have three and this one is folded pretty well, so let's leave that. in this stack these three and that one we have four of them, we have these three here they are all 540 W 492 volts, so they could actually be all together on a string and those are 530 W 49 12 volts, so okay, Ryan, explain our puzzle. So where we've come to here is that we're trying to make chains of identical cells.
You're always supposed to have identical cells and we have a bunch of different cells here. We are trying to make identical chains so that they work correctly and then each chain will go on its own MP PT tracker. We expect around 20 to 24 solar panels in total depending on the waters. These are. I really want three chains of eight, so we have two chains of eight, we figured it out. They are all identical, these ones here are, so you have eight and eight, okay, they are all identical and will be good chains, now we have a group of three, a group of four, a group of five and a group of two, uhoh, so that's where We're at what we're finding out is that even though they're not from the same manufacturer, they're all very similar, these cells and the three above, so we have four and three 540 watts and 49 1 12 volts, basically. they're very, very similar, they could be on a string, they'll match up with the weakest cell or the weakest panel, which will still be really good.
I think what we can do is take some dismeric cells, make a string out of them and it'll be fine, alternatively we could take because we have four MPP trackers, we could take four identical ones on one MPP tracker, three other identical ones on another PPP tracker and then we have that one at the bottom that is identical to these eight. Here we could put that on that string and be fine, so I think we have options, we're just going to try to pick eight more of these that are really good and we'll mix and match them and I think it'll be fine, what happens if they don't match correctly is that they all work at the weakest level basically so again that will also happen if we have a bad cell we will get a low performing string and then we will have to locate which cell is not working properly so I think we will start making more stacks it is okay, let's do it right.
I think we have all the solar panels ordered, we have our game plan of the 36 panels. I think

only

two were trash, right? Yes, it can't be used safely, so it's not bad considering we have a great deal and what's next? Yes, we have two chains of eight, a chain of six and a chain of four. In total there are 14 KW, and we have an 11.4 KW inverter. We are going to install it so since we are in Minnesota we don't have full sun all the time it will just cut back a little when it is overwhelmed but most of the time we will get more power from the inverter and then we will have some left over for future projects so that we will work to repair some of them that have cracks.

How much would all these new solar panels have cost? It would have been about $155,000. We paid a very small fraction of that, so I think it will be worth it, I hope so again, stay tuned to see how we set this all up, make sure everything works and we're going to do some measurement net, which will be a pretty good deal and a great source of income for us when we move from this cabin to our completely off-grid, very well built house thanks for joining us on our little adventure to rescue these panels.
