Woodturning - Making a Gold Leaf Bowl!

Feb 27, 2020
they look good, hello friends, welcome back to my channel and another project video, thanks for joining me, so today I'm going to make a

bowl

, not just any

bowl

. I have a bit of a strange bowl, with a bunk bed look, something different anyway. I got them. I went to the store the other day and found a bunch of these

gold

en flakes. Look at them, they look beautiful and I was wondering if they would look great in some resin so I'm not too sure. how is this going to turn out, but oh, I figured they would turn out pretty well, since we're getting close to Christmas, these

gold

en flakes are already out.

I guess they brought them for Christmas, maybe not. I thought this would look pretty cool inside. a castle inside the bulb no, the kind of idea I have is that we have this type of bulb, we classify this type of size, a fairly thick piece of citation, this what I was going to do is have a kind of resin inlay and golden flakes in the middle maybe also on the top, not sure how it will look but I hope it looks pretty good. What we need to do is, first of all, this might take a little while to get started, obviously.

More Interesting Facts About,

woodturning making a gold leaf bowl...

It hasn't been long for you to look, but for me, this is our main blank and I also pick it up at the store and I thought it was perfect. Close and close, close and close, yes, close and close, this is just a plastic pop-. Just lift the lid so we can get rid of that, we don't need the piece of paper that comes with it, we just need the light bulb. All we want to try to do here is create the gold

leaf

lit white space here, so we have one. Of these, then we're going to want a smaller one, which I think somewhere I need to take a look at to try to make a smaller one for the top of the bulb.

We'll have this on the bottom and then We'll have our gold

leaf

type resin blank in the middle, a piece of wood and then another gold type resin piece, if you know what I mean, instead of keep talking, let's go ahead and make this blank, now mix this really well and You have to really make sure you mix it really well otherwise it won't work, so I always mix it for a couple of minutes. You know, I'm just going to make sure that the a and the account that I have. mixed there is completely mixed, what I could do now is put a blank space here to avoid wasting all the flakes and everything in the middle because we're not going to need the medium, however, I'm going to continue doing this because I'm going to cut the middle when let's have it on, I'll take it out and use it on another project another day, so I won't worry too much about it, so what I'm going to do now is just get these things. spread it out well so there it is now it's ready to go into the pressure cooker obviously we want this to be very clear we don't want any bubbles at all it looks pretty clear already but it has bubbles but it will come out when I put it in the pressure cooker.

I'm going to change this so that we have this in the middle so I can cut it out a little bit later. We can use it in this project or maybe another one that I'm not too sure about yet, so yeah, it looks good. so far let's hope it comes out okay in the morning, okay, while we wait for it to sit in the pressure vessel overnight, we can put this little blank on the lathe and we can finish the base of what this is going to look like first. everything and then once the base is ready we're ready to stick our resin blank on top of that, so there we go, that's what I've done so far, it's really good, this inside of it, this quote is just amazing, look at the light and It looks beautiful, so beautiful now, as you can see in here.
I kind of liked this instead of just being a mortise so I can turn it, obviously, to put it in the chuck, which I obviously need. to do that, but you know, I tied this up a little bit, so it has a little pattern, so you have a little cut out here, which leans towards another couch and then makes way for my emblem in the middle so you can see a little different instead of just being, you know, a flat, yeah, just a hole so you can put it in the back of the Chuck, so try to give it a fancy touch. so I always try to imagine it a little bit if I can just to make you look a little bit different so that's what we have so far so I finish the kind of base of the bowl I'm not quite sure what we're going to do yet .
Could we continue uploading this here, but I'm not too sure? I'm just going to wait now for the gold drill bit to dry as well so that the gold resin blank dries and then we can bring this glue over to this side and then glue another blank on. on top of that as well and then hopefully another one will be blank on top of that as well so that's it for now so what I used was a couple of coats of the chestnut cellulose sanding sealer and then I moved on to the Yorkshire sand, which is a really fantastic Product, always put it in there if you can see it and then I use the microcrystalline chestnut wax.
Now it is not a final finish. I like to use a top finish and although it turned out really well, I want a really beautiful shine. that, but I'm not going to do that yet because we do it once we're done, the whole bowl we'll end up putting some old trusty wax in there or shallow wax, not exactly as we expected, so you can look, it didn't come out as we expected because all the flakes have moved towards the center. That will be fine for the top of the bowl, but not for the edges because it is this edge here where we need to have all the flakes.
I'm going to take this off to cut a circle in the middle and we'll use that, but we'll do it again and try to think of a way to keep the scales around the edges. I think I've already done it. I have a great idea, so here are our gold flakes that look really good and you can get an idea of what it's going to look like in there, but obviously it hasn't quite worked because they're all piled up and gathered together. this area and we haven't gone outside and that's where we really wanted it, so it doesn't matter, but what we can do still uses this.
I'm going to need to grab a thin piece here, which I think will do. It works pretty well inside the bulb so I only need that little strip so what I'm going to do is use another one of these face plates that I have and I'm going to screw it in the middle because it's not necessary, no I'm not worried the inside, the only thing I'm worried about is the edge, so I'm going to screw it in there and then we'll put it on the lathe and see if we can cut a piece of this, so now we have our ring, which I think will fit pretty well inside this bit, so what I'm going to do now is clean this edge and clean this one. border and then we're going to be able to glue this to our blank bowl, but obviously we need to make another one of these for the background because it's a little bit small now.
I think we'll check to get this in there now. So what we probably want is another one, so ideally we want this to be up here somewhere with the other one over there, and then what we'll probably do is put another piece of wood in the middle and then have this that have. two lines of this, but it's going to look really good there, I think I hope why, okay, so we sand this back part to be our ring to glue on another piece of the sapele that we have here, so that's what What I'm going to do is glue it in there, but obviously we also need to make another one of these rings.
It doesn't, but what I'm going to do is open up the bottom of this so I can get this back into the chuck. I'm going to open up the part of this a little bit, so I'm also going to put some of these gold flakes on the base here. I just think that might add a little bit more. touch it to be a ship, but there's no low noise place, but I still don't really know what I'm doing, okay, so we have this ring now and this will be the base ring, hopefully that's right. a little crooked, but that doesn't really matter right now because we can fix it once we have it all glued together and on the stand, so we have this one and the smaller one too, no idea again.
It kind of goes on the base, the base that I don't have right now is still being set up with the ring that I put on it, another piece of wood, then we'll have this, then another piece of wood and then what I have. You have here, remember this piece, this is a little piece and a little circle that we take out in the middle, so I'm thinking whether or not we can use this somehow instead of wasting this, what I'm going to try and what I do is to try to cut a Slytherin out of here and make a circle with it because with this bowl I end up being some sort of VAR or maybe a bowl with a lid, that's fine, but you always have to keep your options open. but the Slytherin there was no gold leaf there so what I thought I would do is take out the mini circle and I got that and again there was no gold leaf to ruin that plan so what am I going to do now?
I have another plan, they have another idea, so actually what I wanted was something like this but with gold leaf, but what I'm going to do is stick this here, let it sit overnight and then bring this over. Back on the lathe, put this in there and that will give it shape as a base to work on and then we can do whatever we want with this little bit, so let's do it, so now we'll wait for it to settle from time to time. Get on the lathe and finally try to do something with it and again, I still have no idea what it's going to be, so as you can see, I started trying to shape this into some kind of big bowl, but pop, it's a combo these are coming these are going to come out pretty good I think I think these are really going to shine and you'll see we've got leaves in there nicely we've got our little piece just glued in there now so I'm going to let that sit for a moment and then we're going to put another type fancy cover here, yeah, I'm not quite sure what yet, but we'll put some fun into them, not only sorry, yeah, like a Finn, you're doing great, yeah, so far there's not much left to do, it's quite a large piece, oh, that's the finished cover, look, that's beautiful.
I love it, it's really pretty so we can really tell how the rest is going. to come out and that's a really nice finish with Yorkshire sand, then a little bit of microcrystalline wax and then in the trusted shadow wax store, okay, let's finish this so it goes in there, it'll come out fine, they look pretty good. that kind of effect is quite nice, so what we're going to do now is just finish the finish on the lid, okay, look at that, so so far everyone looks a little shiny, we just finished it off with wax cello, so that looks pretty good inside it looks cool it has that kind of clear resin there with the gold leaf that looks pretty good yeah, okay and then we have this little background here that is a gold leaf that is it's getting closer it's getting closer like this There's not much to do now I just have to finish the top, I have to think about what kind of Enya we're going to put in and then we finish well, so we made this little finial that's made of ebony and I think that It would be a nice touch on top of that, I'm going to add a little twist and that's it Wow, that took me years, absolutely years, there were so many things to do there, it just took so long, I don't know, it's a little different in es large I don't normally make large pieces it's a little different it's kind of a bowl but also a pot if the lid doesn't fit as tight as I would like this is a little different so I guess it's something different and now you also have the bottom with the gold leaf there and with my emblem in the middle, so yeah, it took quite a while, I'm not really sure if I should have done it. to put this in there or not, I think looking at it now it probably would have been better with another piece of this sapele in the middle, but you know you live and learn, you try things that you liked and we don't like, so I'm not too sure, I think It probably would have been better with a piece of ebony there or, as I say, the sapele in the middle, but however no, mine is already made, I can't take it apart properly, but no, I don't.
So there's the top piece that we kept because I knew I was going to try to save it somewhere so it's there and it turned out well so I hope the video wasn't too long for you and I hope you enjoyed it. project again try to be different try to think of something that isn't always the same as the last one or something I've done before I definitely haven't done that before now what's wrong with my hair? I think it needs to be fixed I hope you continue to enjoy the videos in the content and thank you very much for joining me on today's project.
