Why You Need a Thunderbolt 4 Hub for M1 Macs?Dec 30, 2021
so you have a new silicone based mac m1 from apple it could be a macbook air or a macbook pro or a mac mini one of the first conversations that comes up when people are buying one or already bought one is that I only have two ports
thunderbolt4 now some people misunderstand them and assume they are usb c ports but no they are
thunderbolt4 ports which are extremely powerful if you know how to use them now i am not going to get too much into the difference between usbc and thunderbolt 4 in this video i will save it for another video but today i'm going to show you how to maximize your thunderbolt 4 ports on your new apple m1 max silicone dock, in fact these tips will be back until 2016 with any thunderbolt 3 based mac let's go for them.
Aloha, I'm the doctor, your content creation coach, today I'm going to talk to you about how to maximize the potential of any Mac from 2016. to the new apple m1 max silicone base now most people don't understand side ports , although they look like usb-c ports they are actually thunderbolt ports either thunderbolt 3 or thunderbolt 4 these tips will work the items I am going to show you today are thunderbolt 4 hubs yes not docking hubs I know there is a difference and it confuses people but let me explain a different thunderbolt 4 port a thunderbolt 4 hub would normally have a thunderbolt port to connect to the machine let's call it a communication port or link master and there will be an additional one you can use to connect a thunderbolt device that normally , for most people it is not enough. you can take a device like this this is the cow digit element the cow digit element for the hub and connect three additional Thunderbolt devices without removing the one you use for the master connector again on most docks that plug r is busy because of the cable that
needs to talk to the computer now on the market now there's a couple that came out but these are the best here that i have with me today and i'll show you a little bit more about these this is the owc thunderbolt 4 hub this is the anchor hub thunderbolt 4 and this is the cow digit thunderbolt 4 hub on the surface to be basically the same thing but let me look up a few things as i pull this up so you can see that the owc and the anchor are basically identical twins the ports line up almost exactly this one has a power button while the owc doesn't have the owc attached to a kensington lock so no one steals your hub it also e You'll find the power supply is in basically the same place and when we turn these bad boys to the front you can see they're probably the exact same hub again there's a super speed 10 gigabyte per second usb 3.2 gen 2 connector on the front and this is your master connector you can always say the master connector because on the front there will be a little computer plus the lightning there now adding the cow digit to the mix again you can see on the surface they are more or less the same , the master motherboard is probably identical throughout and every manufacturer asks for a bit of customization to make theirs stand out from the crowd, so again you can see the ports basically lined up and the power supply basically lined up and actually , it looks like the owc and Cow digit could probably swap power supplies, they look pretty similar too, but as we flip them elta these guys the one thing Cow Digi brought to the table is instead of having a 10 gigabyte per second super speed port on the front the one thing you'll notice about the cow digit on the front if you have one two three four 10 gigabytes per second super speed usb 3.2 gen 2 ports they're not blue I guess it's a design thing but these are as fast as you see on the owc and the pin the only other difference which to me is the home run to the cow digit is they put the transmission or communication on the side so what it does is it gives you the ability to connect differently i like that in instead of having on the front seems a little weird to me that I'm on the front in the owc and the anchor isn't a deal breaker but it's something to keep in mind so when I mess these guys up you'll see they're all about the same size um again the owc and the anchor seem to be identical twins now back again os another major difference you'll see so the cow digit works either way it actually has little rubber feet that come with it so you can use it this way or this way depending on what you
needit to be fit on your desk so in their specs they call it reversible funny thing the owc has a definite top and bottom because of the rubber feet on the bottom and the anchor also has a rubber slide on the bottom , which means there isn't you know you can't really reverse it you're stuck with these guys they're stuck face up whereas this guy can spin in either direction and that might be useful depending on your spacing last thing to break these guys apart and i will do them in order the anchor comes with a 100 watt power supply the owc comes with a 110 watt power supply and the cow digit comes with a 150 watt power supply watts the reason power supply voltage makes a big difference to you is at 150 watts you are less likely to have problems where your usb bus runs out of power so if you were to rank them in order to what i would buy i would probably buy third the anchor the design is a little beefier it's a little bigger it's beautiful but it only comes with a 110 watt power supply which may not be a deal breaker for you , that doesn't mean I don't get it, it's a wonderful device, but I prefer more power, so it goes in that order, then it would be the owc, the size is great. like the little rubber feet on the bottom um again this and the ankle are identical twins probably made in the same factory uh i'm almost willing to bet but this guy comes with the next power supply at 110 and then digit kyle because of the extra ports on the front and bigger power supply this guy is hands down the winner this guy again comes with a 150 watt power supply and four 10 gigabytes per second super speed usb 3 and the same three extra lightning bolts on the back so what's great about thunderbolt for hugs is they enable that hub capability now let's talk real quick about compatibility these should work on any mac with big sur or higher they should also work on any ipad or ipad pro from 4th generation and above, they will work on modern Windows machines because one of the reasons for switching to Thunderbolt 4 from Thunderbolt 3 was to add Bringing the Windows folks to the party, as long as you have a Mac 2016 or newer that includes the new Apple M1 Silicone Base Max or have a modern Windows machine with Thunderbolt 3 or if you have an iPad Pro or iPad 4th generation, you should be able to use them with no problem now the other thing that's useful and why they're super powerful thunderbolt 4 offers daisy chaining capability so you can daisy chain multiple of these guys but you could also daisy chain them with something like the cow digit t3 plus which is a different device we can talk about which means you can use the hub for maximum connectivity to get a lot of your fast moving stuff like your drive something like this western digital black high speed dry or my sabrina scream rocket those guys will move real fast on these or something like your monitor now a warning on apple m1 monitors you can only add one thunderbolt dock display the other display it will have to go to an hdmi port which is important to know but you can run two monitors on there you can actually run up to six but that's a different video you need to have a thunderbolt oriented mac period that's just the way it works for now maybe apple change that one more time so i would say get the anchor the owc and then the cow digit not that one is better than the other per se performance wise it's been the themselves.
I have tried hard drives. I have tested the connectivity. Plug and unplug. to know more be sure to hit the subscribe button and hit the bell, you can also ask questions in the comments, now watch the video below
