Why I Live Off Grid: FREEDOM, No Mortgage, No Utilities
Sep 18, 2023Hello guys, today is a great day. I'm going to let the chickens out of the coop and this will be their first day in the wild, so let's see how they do. I have to count these chickens before I release them because I can. I don't remember how many we have, whether it's 20 or 21. But this way I make sure they all come in at night one two three four five six seven eight nine 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 I think we have 23 chickens, Skeeter , you have that friend. They're a little shy, but they'll come out when they're ready, so I'll let them be Skeeter and protect those chickens.
In this video I want to talk about living off the
grid
and farming or simple living whatever you want to call it because I think there are a lot of misconceptions out there and I just want to show why we do it or talk about why we do it and talk about the advantages of this and why people would want tolive
this way so I've been living off thegrid
or without plumbing or whatever you want to call it, you know, for several years now and all I can do is give you my honest experience um , but we are people who reallylive
this way, you know, this is not our weekend cabin or anything, uh, we live the lifestyle, you know, the simple living lifestyle and I know a lot of people look at these videos, they kind of dream of doing the same thing and I was one of those people several years ago, before I started living this way, I watched all kinds of off-grid YouTube channels or homemade YouTube channels and I just tried from learning everything I could, you know, I didn't really know how to start, uh, I didn't really know how to find land or you know if it was doable, so just so you know if Are you someone that you know and you dream of doing this and you find yourself watching videos or channels like this?At one point I was in your shoes, but the most important thing I want to cover in this video is just talk about why you know and just give my honest opinions on how living this way has worked for us um and yeah, just give you, I'm talking about my honest personal experience and just talking about why someone would want to live simply, you know, without a lot of modern conveniences. You know, we only have an outhouse for a toilet, we don't have pressurized plumbing, we collect rainwater for our water and we just talk about why anyone would want to live like that because a lot of people don't really understand it nowadays.
So I would say that one of the main reasons why this lifestyle is attractive to me and probably why it is attractive to you is the financial aspect. You don't need a lot of money to live this way. You know, we have no use. bills, well, we heat with wood, we build our own house, our own cabin, free and clear, we don't owe money for it, everything is paid for, we own it, so think about how different your life could be if you owned it of your house, you didn't have a
mortgage
and you didn't have utility bills.I mean, in my opinion, that is the ultimate
freedom
and not everyone wants to live this way. I get it, but I'm just showing why we do it right because it's not for everyone, not everyone wants to live in an off-grid cabin and have an outhouse and you know you don't have plumbing or you know pressurized indoor plumbing or you know how to harvest rainwater. or whatever, now of course there are still expenses, I mean you will always need money to buy things. buy equipment to buy supplies uh we have a small garden, you know we have chickens, we raise our own meat chickens and we slaughter them, you know we hunt, we fish, that helps a lot with food costs, but you still need other things, do you?TRUE? kitchen utensils, you need dry ingredients, you need spices, so you still need some money to do this, but like I said, imagine not having a
mortgage
, imagine not having a single utility bill and how different your life could be, so the financial aspect of this is probably what it is. uh what's the big draw for most people, that was a big draw for me and I'll tell you right now it's amazing to not have thousands of dollars in bills hanging over your head every month, it kind of opens the door. Doing many things well gives you much morefreedom
.Another big reason why I love living this way is that I like to be in control of things. I want to have complete control over my own life, so I don't want to depend on the city or the grid or you know, any energy company to supply me with the energy that I need to live, you know, I don't want to have to depend on a bank to provide me. I lent a lot of money to pay for a house I want. being in control of everything, so that's how I am. I like knowing that I don't depend on anyone but myself for the most part and that's a big draw for me and it's a fun job and this lifestyle is work but you're working for yourself you know I don't think many not many not all, but a lot of people feel like their jobs may be meaningless or they feel like they wish they had more of a purpose, you know, where everything you do on a farm is directly related to your life, you know, so laying firewood, yes, it is work, but it is satisfying because you will get the reward for it. working for yourself you are independent you are in control of your energy so what I mean by being in control is that we have solar energy for our energy needs that is what runs the cabin we have lights we have a few other things that we manage refrigerator off our solar power um it's good for you to know that we don't have a monthly electric bill it's just that we're independent like if the grid ever goes out or the power goes out or whatever if there's a storm or something that doesn't let's do.
I don't even know because the way our cabins work, the way these farms work, we're independent, we're free from all that stuff, just life would go on as normal, um, so we wouldn't even notice. You know, another great reason. Because living this way is the aspect of health. You know, I want to grow my own food and hunt my own food. You know, we raise our own chickens and kill them so we have a whole year's worth of chicken meat to eat. Know? I know exactly what they did to the chickens, right, I know where it comes from.
That's very important to me too. You know, it's probably a big draw for most people. It's just the health aspect. You know it's a healthy way to live. You're producing all your own stuff, you're growing most of your own food, but I still hope this doesn't turn out the way you know. I'm not bragging. I'm just saying that's how it is. That's why this lifestyle is amazing, that's why we like to live this way and that's why so many other people are interested in it and are starting their own Homestead Journeys and the most important thing I can say is that we are you.
I know we've been living this way for several years now and I don't regret what we've done at all. It has worked exactly how I thought it would be even better. Know. It is, yes, it is something incredible. having complete control of your life, so one thing I will say about starting and I think this is one of the main reasons why a lot of people hold back on this is that they worry about what their peers are doing or what other people are doing. people. I will think of them for living this way. I mean, let's be real.
I'm a young guy and off grid farming isn't exactly cool or in my generation, but you know you can't, you can't spend your life. Worry about what other people are going to think, you have to do what you want to do because time runs and it passes quickly, so, like I said, I don't regret anything, living this way, yes, a lot. People think it's weird or weird or they'll throw like little Jabs, you know, but it is what it is. I'm a happy camper and I like the way things have worked out and where they're going, you know, and I think a lot of people are pretty aware.
I mean, you look at the world around you and something seems pretty strange. You know there's a lot of control and I like the fact that I'm in control of my life. It is a very important thing. I and I'm proud to be and certainly you can too so anyway I just wanted to talk a little bit about it because a lot of people just don't understand it or they just think. Oh, that Kyle lives in the woods, you know, no plumbing or not, you know, um, but I'll tell you this man I'm happy and I live a very stress-free life because of this, so I guess the moral of the story history. uh with this little Ted Talk it's, um, you have to do what you want to do in life, you know you can't worry about what other people or what society is going to think of you and all I can say is If you are someone who is looking to do this type of thing or you know that you have some interest in it and want to live simply and get out of the city a little bit and just live a more peaceful and stress free lifestyle, do it and do you? what is it? the worst thing that can happen, you know you do it and you find out that maybe that's not for me and then you go back to doing what you were doing, so I think if you're someone who's watching videos like this and you have an interest in it or you believe which is cool, it's probably for you, you know, there's something in you that lets you know that you want to see these things, so it's really nice to slow things down, I mean, you look, I mean, how a lot of people like to have anxiety and depression nowadays, why do you know no one asks why?
I think it's a result of the society we've created, we live in this stressful world, it's always moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving, moving , and life just happens You for um and yeah, I mean living this way and living simply, um it's been amazing for you, you know, my mental health, I mean, it's so stress free and peaceful, it's this nice kind of living a simple and kind life. of going at your own pace, you know you can stop and enjoy things and you know the work you have to do on a farm, like laying firewood, gardening and everything else, collecting water and all that is uh It's satisfying and you feel a feeling of achievement knowing that you are doing things that are worthwhile and that are directly related to your life, so I think that work is fun and it is also fulfilling something else.
What we'll talk about also is that I think a lot of people think that if you're off the grid, Homesteader or you know someone who lives in a rural area or in the woods or whatever, that's your life, um, you can still do modern things, I mean Sierra. and I've been playing a lot of golf lately. You know I love golf. It's fun. So you know we do modern things. You know we'll go out to eat once in a while, like you don't have to live like a caveman or cavewoman. uh just because you live off the grid or you know you're in a small house or you know you're a farmer, you can still do modern things, you know, doesn't mean you have to be true, you can do other things. things and do modern things, but at the end of the day it's nice to know that I can get back to this and you know, be in control of my life and go at my own pace.
Another great thing is you know, look at these animals. I know they're free range they can live life oh you're napping because they were playing too much this morning so that's another reason I like living here too is it gives my animals the best life they can. Have you ever known? I mean, Skeeter not even you know he's never on a leash, he doesn't wear a collar, he can run, he uses his nose, he chases animals, he can do what dogs are supposed to do, you know, he's not fenced. a patio, he is free and I love that for him, also another thing I will say is that there is no right or wrong way to do this.
I mean, the fun thing about this is that you can do it however you want. some people want more modern amenities some people are okay with less some people have more money some people have less money you know it doesn't really matter um there's no one size fits all for this you know, do it however you want do it, you know, however, you know some people might want more modern amenities and that's okay so anyway I just wanted to talk about the whys you know because a lot of people don't understand it and hopefully you know this if anyone who's dreaming of doing it , hopefully, it helped convince you.
One thing with this lifestyle is that he's not going to fall into your lap one day, you know he's not going to come to you, you have to go, you have to go. do it like this, um, that's how it is, you know, the important thing is to get land, that's your big purchase, you have to save up for um and once you have land, the possibilities are endless, it's a lot of fun to take a piece of raw land and then designing it exactly how you want, you know, building your own buildings, deciding where you want to put things, where you want to have the garden, you know, it's a lot of fun, just carving out your own life on a piece of land, I think that It is the best. us, it's in our DNA to do things like that, um, um, anyway, like I said,I just want to talk about why people live this way, why we do it, why we continue to do it, anyway, I hope this helps some of you. that are on the fence and like I said, I just remember I used to be someone who watched YouTube videos and it was just a dream and then one day I tried it and yeah, here we are.
