what no one tells you about NYU I college advice

Feb 27, 2020
our name from NYU I just came to invite you to New York Oh, congratulations, oh good job and I'm fine, you don't use New York bureaucracy, real people. Hello, my name is Darcy, welcome or welcome back to my channel. I'm really excited about today's video because I know a lot of you are people who go to NYU trans Rena and why you're interested in NYU because that's high on my channel so today's video is going to be a little bit different than some of the other videos that have been made because a lot of them have been more about transfers and

advice

and that kind of stuff which is really important so definitely check them out.

I have a whole playlist of transfers and that sort of thing, so definitely check them out if you're interested. I also have a ton of videos on

college

vices, but more generally, so yeah, but that's not

what

's going on with you today. This video today is more geared towards people who are interested in NYU and want to know exactly

what

to expect, so I wanted to say what you don't know about NYU before coming here because there are a lot of wonderful things about this school and I hope no one leaves I come away from this thinking that you shouldn't go here because that's not what I'm trying to do, I just want people to be aware of the things I've learned since I got here about what it means to be an NYU student. which I just didn't expect or know beforehand, so I hope you find this.

The video is helpful and definitely comment below if you go to NYU, are interested in NYU and if you have any other questions that you want me to answer in another video, maybe yes, so I hope you enjoy it and let's move on to have some. stuff written on my phone that I just wrote randomly over the last few months and just for when I wanted to make this video and here we are so if I look down that's why it's not my intention It can be annoying but yeah first thing What I didn't expect at all is the power of the NYU name both in New York and in general.
what no one tells you about nyu i college advice
I'm from Chicago, if you don't know, and even there, basically, in Chicago almost no one had done it. I heard about William and Mary, where I transferred from, if you don't know, and I'm just saying I don't use the name and people know it and here it's like, oh, NYU might like you if you live in New York. Being an NYU student puts you ahead of almost every other

college

student, except maybe like Coulomb, yeah, I guess so, because there are so many schools in Manhattan and honestly, you can't know them all, especially since there are so many of them. small, but if you say you're a student at NYU automatically people like Oh, congratulations, oh good job and I'm fine, thanks, like what I did, I liked going to school, I don't know , and it's so strange because it's so different. to tell people I went to William and Mary because I always have to explain it, but literally guys, if they're ranked almost the same, it's so strange how much power the name has and I feel like it'll be interesting to see how that changes.

Also in terms of career, like when I go out into the real world, but I think the power of having a degree from NYU will make a big difference. I feel like because of the power of the name, I just wasn't. respect that and in some ways I guess it's an advantage because people know the name so I feel like it will be good for my resume compared to even I'll get married just because people know it more especially where I'm from and what place I am. People in New York say, oh yeah, NYU or they say William in Marion, like sometimes people know what the tomato is, so definitely be prepared for that, I guess that's what I'm saying and be prepared for random people to They congratulate you because it's a little strange, but that's what they do even if you've been there a long time.
I feel that way, so one thing about my year that attracted me is the diversity because they attract a lot of international and UCS students from different walks of life. They were founded on that because they wanted to be. I think the first school in theirs, don't quote me if I'm wrong, but I think they were the first in all of New York to accept people of all kinds of people. From different backgrounds, they have always been quite progressive, it seems that, so that I know, but that being said, I have realized and there are statistics that I have heard that support this that NYU is not economically diverse to be able to afford to go. here you're privileged, you have to have enough money that you can't be in poverty, obviously, or even lower class, so my sociology professor shared a statistic and it was something like 90 percent of the students who they go to New York University are above average. income or something like that was something really deep like students have a lot of money what's the point and wow we're diverse and a lot of things racial and ethnic groups gender etc. sexual orientation economically we are not and I feel that that is probably This is true at most universities simply because you have to have money to go to university and the momentum is eaten away because it is very expensive, but I don't think that the University of New York do a good job offering money to students even though they definitely have a lot of money to spend. because they spend a lot of money on other things like stairs and Kimmel, am I right NYU student?
So yeah, I think that's something that maybe they can improve on, so I guess be prepared for there to be a lot of students who have money, especially international ones, but this one is a little strange and I feel like it stands out to me because I I transferred from a smaller school, which is the bureaucracy of NYU, it's real. Honestly, there are many times when you have to do it. get things done and never meet a person, like I was getting advising accommodations for the next semester and had to meet someone in person. It's all over the online forums and emails and stuff like that and it's a little strange which William and Mary, I had that to a certain extent for things like that, yeah, yeah, you don't necessarily meet someone, but I feel like it's on a level. extreme, as if there were offices on top of offices, on top of offices, that do things and it's a little different in the sense that the professors don't know what's going on in the rest of the bureaucracy that we are at William and Mary, they had I had to know a little bit more just because I was smaller and didn't they just know what was going on in terms of I've had teachers who literally don't know what's going on in the online class in terms of where they post things and why.
Are the students enrolled in it? I think that's something I can't help you with, rather than what I will do. I feel like teachers could figure it out, so it's just that people aren't doing what they're told to do in the bureaucracy, so teachers focus on teaching technology, people will deal with all that other stuff and then all the Administration will take care of all the paperwork and it's very bureaucratic and that's actually not a bad thing because that's what needs to happen for a big university like this to work but if you're not someone who takes initiative I would say don't come here because you have to be the one to take the initiative most of the time, like your

advice

that I'm going to pass on to you, you have to know that you're supposed to meet with them to confirm your classes before you can rule on that kind of thing, so you just have to know how the bureaucracy works and how to maneuver it, but you can google everything you need, so I haven't really had a problem with this, I actually feel like it's more efficient because of the way it's structured, like my dad had Compton in that too in terms of the financial aspect, that they just do things very quickly, like in terms of deposits and down payments, and that. type of housing, yes, sometimes not so much, but generally they are very efficient about it, so I think it is an advantage, I suppose, but it has its pros and cons.
One thing I didn't expect about the student population is how many people are actually from New York and commute or like to still live with their family and that really surprised me. I guess people who are from New York still love New York, so they just want to stay in school here, which is totally fine. I feel like nothing again, I thought I was just surprised to find out how many people were actually New Yorkers that went, why you, and for me it's like a very different college experience to move here and to go to college because you still you live with your family or at least like the people I met who travel often are people who travel sometimes because they live further away from campus but they are alone, so that's different.
I'm talking about people who are native New Yorkers and it's just I know I wasn't expecting it. I was very surprised and met some transfer students. You're like laughs in New York and then you came back, which is also very interesting, so I guess be prepared for people to like to talk about what we are about. from New York, they're like I didn't expect people to talk about what neighborhood they are in Brooklyn or something or Queens and it's like I don't know we're like Long Island, so just in Looking back a little bit on the last one, I feel that when you come here to NYU and you're not from New York, you understand what it's like to be a New Yorker pretty quickly because the way the campus is, you're not in a bubble like that was William and Mary, you were in a bigger bubble. or less in that city and in New York, you live in New York as if there were no bubble like when you leave campus and start entering the city like Washington Square Park has done.
There are tons of tourists and random people who aren't students there, so you feel like you're in the New Yorker. Honestly, a lot of times I feel like an adult who just lives here taking classes and that's a really cool feeling, but not for everyone, so definitely. I think you'd have to have a certain level of maturity and just be responsible because you're kind of an adult, you have to like to take care of yourself and there aren't dining rooms in every dorm, that kind of thing, you just have to know. being able to take care of yourself, especially because in a lot of the bedrooms in our apartments now you have that feeling like you have to clean your own bathroom and I'm going to go grocery shopping, so things like that definitely make me feel better.
As an adult New Yorker, you get sucked into the New York lifestyle very quickly and you can't live in New York without feeling that fast-paced lifestyle feeling. I think so. I'm not sure how to like it. Explain this exactly other than that last semester I was in really big conferences that I hated, but for my summer classes I mean commuting. I need classes, so I think it just has to do with the nature of the classes I was taking. and then in the summer session there are a lot less people here, but during my first semester I was like I hate how big these classes are and why use so many bigger classes than where women get married, so that was something which I was really disappointed with, I think, but I think it's I'm going to get better as I get into the more specific classes and I'm like I'm in the summer session right now, it's a lot smaller, which is really cool, so I guess you can find some of those smaller classes, but in terms of the really generic core classes and the introductory classes they're going to be really big lectures where your professors won't know your name, so be prepared for that I guess, and yeah, if you don't like it I could make a smaller school but at the same time I can still have those smaller classes here too so don't be scared of that if you don't like it either because literally look at the classes I'm in now one has four students and the other one has 11.
I think they are very small, but again, this is the summer session, so I'm not sure if I feel like next fall I will be in some smaller classes and maybe some larger ones, but it definitely depends on your major too, I think because if you're at Tisch, I guess the classes are smaller compared to like I'm at CAS, which has a lot of bigger classes because there's a lot of requirements, but then as I get closer More to my journalism major, I know the classes are smaller, which is what I'm starting to take. One thing that makes animals a little difficult is that it's hard to find a sense of community here because it's so intertwined with New York and people are doing so many things because there are so many. opportunities here, so in that sense I feel like I'm not connected to a lot of people here and the people you might meet in your class aren't that kind of thing, but you don't really like to stay in touch or at least I don't.
Not being in touch with them as much is difficult because, like my closest friend, I don't have classes with her, I never see her on campus, and even though we are both NYU students, there just isn't that connection in The Campus. At that moment, I walk around campus and I don't see people I knowreally for the most part, so it's very different than if you go to a smaller school. I guess we're up for it, Mary. Obviously I didn't know everyone. but you can walk around campus and often see people that you know or just like people that you recognize because you spend a lot of time around people, so it's very different, but it's what you're interested in and if that's what you want, what I wanted. moving to New York, so I had to accept that because it's part of living in New York.
I like the anonymity in the sense that you can just go out and no one

tells

you no. That's why I feel pretty comfortable vlogging in general public because I feel like if people are going to talk to me I don't really care, it's whatever. And the people of New York do strange things and they will never see me again. there are probably pros and cons again, I mean the pros and cons of everything related to NYU. One thing that's a little harder about going to NYU is that it's hard to balance school and wanting to explore the city and be a tourist of sorts.
Sometimes everyone likes: I have a lot of work, I just can't get out easily. I have to concentrate on work, but that makes me sad because I want to do things so that the balance can be a bit like a shovel. but even having that problem is kind of funny because in a small town Williamsburg I was super bored and there was something to do even if I wanted to do things, so here that's not a problem since there is a lot to do, it's just that sometimes I know I have to work a little bit and man you know that's not as fun as going out and exploring New York but having the city at our disposal it's so much fun to be able to explore and I think being a young twenty-something is the time perfect to do it man you don't have any family ties that you have to maintain or I mean you can't you can't be in a relationship but I don't like losing the ladies yeah but yeah.
New York is New York is great, so if nothing else lights you up for New York, I feel like overall NYU's biggest pro. I want to end with something positive. The biggest pro is the amount of opportunities you can connect with my being. In New York, being in a small town before, I had almost no journalism opportunities and there are so many opportunities here, whether on or off campus, people do a lot of internships and just like there are so many strong programs because literally almost everything is on New York, so that's a really cool thing and because I know my journalism class, we could go site-seeing, visit other news organizations and stuff, so that's something you can't do anywhere, but in New York York there are so many great things. things here and you can't extrapolate NYU from New York, which I think is a good thing in the sense that there are so many things here that you are here to thrive on, but it doesn't make any sense, there are so many things here that it's opening up to your exploration and discovery to gain experiences and I think overall by going to college in New York you're going to get a lot more college experience than if you just went to a big state school without my number. two, in that sense, living in a big city to go to college makes a lot of sense, so that's it for this video.
I hope you enjoyed it, maybe you had some ideas about things and with you you didn't know war or what it's really like. being an NYU student, yes, and let me know below if you have questions like the ones I said. I'll try to answer them or make another video, you know. I hope everyone is having a great day, so yeah, definitely check out some of my others. videos on my blogs if you want to get a better idea of what it's like to live my life at NYU, so thank you very much for watching and I'll see you in my next video, bye.
