Jun 05, 2021
Those are always Hello guys, welcome back to my channel today. I thought it would be fun to share my experience at nyu with you. I

know

college decisions will be made relatively soon, so I thought it would be helpful to share them with you. experience and

what

it's like to live in the city because I definitely

know

I was very curious myself before coming here, but a quick disclaimer before we start. I'm just one person among millions of people who have gone to this school, so definitely keep

going

. That in mind as I talk about my own experience

going

to this school, but it's going to be a long video, I'm having coffee here, so let's move on to give some context.
what it s like going to nyu everything you need to know
I recently graduated in May 2020 last year so now I'm an alumnus, I went to nyu stern business school specifically with concentrations in finance and data science. I know people are usually very curious to know

what

your stats were, how you got in. I would share it, but it was so long ago that they aren't. Really relevant already, like my sat score is still out of 2 400. So I don't think that's really helpful, but I'm going to put up on the screen some statistics that nyu provides on their website about their general admission class. stats overview i thought it would be more helpful nyu is one of the largest private universities in the US.

More Interesting Facts About,

what it s like going to nyu everything you need to know...

I believe there are currently around 30,000 college students attending this school. It is also very global with campuses all over the world. I think they say they are number one in the number of international students as well as their study away program, so it's definitely a great school, but I'm just going to address the attire in the hall that everyone knows is the incredibly high tuition and cost of living to go to nyu and It's definitely true for spring 2021 tuition at nyu stern, full-time college student, your tuition is 27,748, which is $55,496 for a full year and that doesn't even include dorm food and just the extra activities, you know, so it's definitely a very very expensive school to go to each school differs slightly, like stern versus cas versus steinhardt, etc., but I would say that in generally you're going to see over 50k a year and something to keep in mind is that nyu is known for not having a lot of financial aid, i think the general socioeconomic level of miu students is generally pretty high and that's definitely something that You should also consider if you want to come to Nyu is that you know you may be surrounded by colleagues or friends who want to go out to eat every day or have a few drinks at a bar or basically just explore the city and many times they end up being money spending activities. very big, so yes, it is very expensive.

I am looking forward to going to nyu and living in the city, if you are an incoming freshman I think you should sleep in a dorm and the dorm costs are also very expensive but they differ slightly depending on the type of dorm you are in you are in, so there is traditional and apartment style, and apartment style just means You also have a kitchen and usually some type of living space, so traditional will be cheaper. An apartment style is more expensive. I looked at some dorm prices in Manhattan. There are some in Brooklyn too, but I only focused on Manhattan for the first time.
what it s like going to nyu everything you need to know
The purpose of this video is that the cheapest one in Manhattan is Reuben Hall, it costs 4,500 per semester and 9,000 for a full academic year. The reason it's the cheapest is because it's the only one that doesn't have air conditioning, so you know. In York City during the summer it's pretty hot and humid, so it's not very nice having to go to sleep when you're a little sticky and drenched in sweat, you know? But it is the cheapest and most expensive option. It will be like most apartment-style dorms and will all be about the same price: $8,778 per semester and $17,556 for a full academic year.
It is much more expensive, but it will generally be a little more comfortable to live there year-round. I would say almost everyone, at least the ones I knew, basically moved off campus after the first year, yes definitely for the second year you usually pay cheaper or like a similar price but you will have your own room instead of a dorm. Normally you will pay a very expensive price but you will also have to share a room with someone else, so many people just prefer that option after their first year they can move off campus, so clearly nyu is a very expensive school, but you know who try to make you think it's worth it with every admissions officers favorite slogan the city is your campus which you know i agree its pretty true if you just look at where the central nyu location is they're basically just a group of buildings surrounding a park which is washington square park, which is definitely something to consider if you are thinking of coming to nyu, you won't get a very traditional place. university experience, I would say that you would probably become a lot more independent, which some people find very difficult, especially the first few weeks or the first year, just because you know that, in my opinion, it is not that natural or easy to find a community in this campus because there isn't one, it really depends on what kind of person you are, whether you prefer the typical college town campus or you know how to get out of your comfort zone and be in this big city where you don't really know a single person.
Something to consider as well is that there really isn't a lot of outside school spirit like you're not going to have these sporting events, college football games where you know, putting face paint on and cheering on your team, that's not really what you're about. it's about nyu, um, but I would say you know that from the people I know and just like what I've been able to experience, the people who attend slash have attended nyu, they're usually very proud of the school, but You wouldn't know it, it translates into a very physical school spirit. So that's also something you want in your four years of college. uh nyu probably isn't for you, but the flip side of course is that it's a really unique and cool experience to be able to attend college in such a big city. like in new york city, I come from the bay area suburbs and when I was a kid, everyone was very similar to me, whereas in new york city, when you walk down the street, there are students, there are employees full time, there are tourists, just all different types and types of people in such a small neighborhood and that's something I never experienced growing up.
It definitely opened my eyes and I'm glad I was able to get out of my comfort zone and be around people who are very different from me, so moving on to social life, I mentioned this before, but you know, even though that there are so many people in nyu and people in general in the city, it can actually be quite easy to feel alone sometimes, especially your first year alone because you don't have a campus and you're basically immersed in this gigantic city where you barely know anyone, so it's tough, especially as your first year, but my number one tip would definitely be to explore club life.
I feel like joining clubs on campus really helped me build my identity in college and brought me some of the closest friends I still have to this day and there are over 300 active clubs on campus for literally anything you want. As you can imagine, they are all university students and affiliated with schools. and like musical ensembles, the list goes on a lot of times when people apply to nyu or are worried about coming, they have this preconceived notion of what kind of person would come to this school, but I think through club life you You realize that there really is no shortage of groups of people and if you just look, you can definitely find a community for yourself.
I also think it is very beneficial to join early. You know that not only is it a great way to meet new people, socialize, explore your interests, but you also set yourself up to potentially land leadership positions that you can gain valuable experience from and use when applying for internships and jobs in the future, as well. like for parties, as you can imagine, there's no such thing as a frat row where people don't have houses in the city, so it's a lot more like kickbacks, which are basically little gatherings in people's apartments or on rooftops, so which I would also recommend joining the club life simply because you are more likely to meet more people if that is something that interests you outside of I would say you know the bars in K-town, they are all more popular and you might see more people in a single meeting, but a big advantage to keep in mind is that, since you are in the city, you know that there is never a

need

for something like that. a dd uh, you just take the subway or uber back to your house, so that part is pretty cool.
The last thing I'm going to touch on in today's video is the resources that nyu offers, it is as I said, one of the greatest. private universities in the US, so there are definitely a lot of resources for students, you just have to know what they are and sometimes do your best to search for them, but starting with similar academic resources, there is a resource center academics. where you can go for school-wide academic support, mentoring, there are peer tutoring workshops so I definitely know people who have attended if they

need

help with a writing assignment or just anything, that's there for you, you have too to your advisors, generally.
You have advisors in your own school and they help you plan your schedule, see if you are on the right track, if you want to change your major, concentration, etc., that's why they are there for you. I would say it's definitely much more like your own initiative to talk to them if you have any questions, like they won't come contact you unless you're about to crash or something, you know what I mean, but in I would actually recommend talking to an advisor, especially if your major like you, you know that each semester is pretty set, like I know, for example, nursing, they have a very strict four-year schedule that's not very flexible, whereas the severe ones, like you can graduate early pretty easily, but the reason I say that is because I know, I mean, I mentioned this very briefly at the beginning, but nyu is like number one in study away and I think there's like 13 or 14 and when you study abroad, honestly, like most people I know studied abroad at some point, if that's something you are.
If you are interested in exploring nyu's global study abroad program, definitely plan your schedule so you don't miss the opportunity to live abroad for a semester and continue your degree. There is the Wasserman center and the nyu handshake, so the Wasserman center is like you. go there for resumes, workshops, cover letters, etc., and I know companies organize interviews there, sometimes nyu handshake is an online portal where companies can post job openings specifically for nyu students, so I think it's a great opportunity because they are literally searching for nyu people so I would go through all the pages to search for anything when I wanted to look for internships or jobs so it's definitely a very useful resource to go to in terms of wellness resources and health, there are both physical and mental resources to help. nyu students obviously there is a health center for nyu students, there is access to nyu gyms which is actually very good because gym memberships in New York are very expensive so it's nice to take advantage of that when you have a membership free and there are also counseling services, the wellness exchange where there is also a 24 hour hotline, so those are definitely good resources to check out if you are coming to nyu, in addition to those who know that living in the city can be quite dangerous , especially at night, so there are also transportation resources.
I think after midnight there is something. called safe ride that opens up and takes you from different locations of the nyu building, it may take a while, but honestly, it's free and it's much safer than walking alone, especially if you're a girl living alone in the city, so definitely I use it a lot when I was in college and throughout the day, there are also different shuttle buses that go around the city because there are some nyu buildings that are further away so they give you that service so you just have to know, look schedule and plan.
Consequently, there are many other different resources as well, but I only selected a few to share with you, but if you come to Nyu I would definitely take the time to see what they have to offer because they are paying. anyway, so you might as well make the most of what you're paying for. Okay this video is getting really long so I'll stop here if you have any additional questions about nyu or just what living in the city is like in general definitely leave it incomments below and I will do a second part. I hope this was helpful.
Thanks for watching and see you next time. Good bye guys.
