What happens to children with autism, when they become adults? | Kerry Magro | TEDxMorristown

Jun 01, 2021
Her birthday is today and the now 12-year-old intern aspires to be a New York Jets cheerleader

when

she grows up. I think about her successes, but I also think about her challenges and I say to myself, "She displays many of the same traits that I displayed as a child." And I want to be there for her. I want to be there for her because

when

she grows up, she will be the greatest cheerleader of all time, not just in the NFL, but in the world. And I will be able to go to a stadium and I will be able to say that she is not only the best in her profession, but that she is a role model and an inspiration for

what

she has been able to overcome.

That's my goal for her. But that's not just my goal for her, it's my goal for every person with

autism

, who has a developmental disability. This is for everyone in this room tonight. We can make a difference for our

children

because we learn not only about

autism

, but many different things every day. Today I can say that I have achieved many of the dreams that I have sought in my life. When my father retired, I had just turned twenty-six, and

what

I was able to tell him as we cut the cake for his retirement party was: “Dad, thanks to you, it was because of you and that town, my mother and father, my loved ones, my community, it was thanks to you that I was able to overcome my obstacles.” Today he is an adult who pursues his dreams.” No matter who is in his village, whether it's a family member, a parent, a co-worker, or a friend, always be prepared to know that you will never, ever be alone in your village.
