And I thought we could recreate that by pairing up with Century Girl Vintage and going around town taking some pictures. - Yeah! (girls gasping) Yes! - I love the photos! So when Devin told me we were going to a

clothing store to dress up and take photos, I was actually really worried. Vintage clothing is very different from modern clothing. People's bodies were different, there's not much stretch in vintage clothing. If something doesn't fit, it doesn't fit.

I definitely thought I'd like to wear just a hat or an earring, and I didn't want that. Because no one wants to feel like they don't fit in with their friends. I kept my expectations in the basement. We get to Century Girl and, first of all, it's like Candy Land. I walked in and thought: Is this what it was like when Dorothy finally got to the part of the movie that was in color? We always have a party, we wear our sequins. - I guess the most important word that comes to mind is eclectic. You can leave the house on a Monday and put on empanadas if you want. You can go out on a Friday and wear a formal dress. The really inspiring thing about the city is that most people take

and remake them. - Today we are going to style the girls for the Solange Knowles challenge. We'll pick out some fabulous pieces and play dress-up, something we'll never be without today. - I was looking at all these things and I thought, that's a two, that's a four, that has no size but it's that wide.

Luckily, Leah and her Century Girl associates had the situation covered and I really appreciated it. - Kristin, I know you like more feminine styles, vintage, glamorous, so I've chosen a few pieces here that I think you would love. We love wearing lingerie here in New Orleans, so this is a fabulous cape from Lucy Ann... - Yes! - Circa 1960. - I love the silhouette of the store! - And then I have this amazing yellow... - Ooh! - Dress with sequins. This was the designer that Marilyn Monroe really liked. Made for a curvy woman, and she is very sexy. - This is the most elastic thing in the store.
Clothes didn't really used to have elastic, did they? - No, no, they didn't. They were adjusted to your body. This incredible cape comes from the estate of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. (Kristin laughing) 20 pounds of metallic tulle. - I have to take a photo or I'll die. There were so many things I could try on that I hardly had time to think about the things I couldn't wear. - We are going to work with Freddie, she is someone who has a slightly more daring style. The first thing we did was glamorize it. This would be wonderful for her. - I love this. - This color.
And then we'll also pair it with this headscarf that has a little bit of a birdcage veil on it. The more drama, the better. - Yes. This is so Mardi Gras. - So Mardi Gras. - I love it. She-she was attracted to this very Gucci vibe. This headscarf, which has a wire at the base, along with these fabulous vintage rhinestone encrusted glasses. So Freddie wants to steal this. We can put on a black bralette with high-waisted shorts or high-waisted jeans, some heels and go out with a little more style. - So Chantel, I know you're like the Posh Spice of the group.
Very attracted by beautiful and designer things. - I am more attracted to beauty and luxury, and it always turns out to be the most expensive. - You could wear it with this little Valentino lace top over jeans. - Oh! - Or you could use them together, they both have their own look. I think this is a look you need to let your inner goddess come out and shine. - This is so fun. - Would you use something like this? - Yes, I would definitely try this on. Boas on your wrists. - Boas on your wrists. - Why not? -This reminds me a lot of where I grew up in Atlanta.
And I love Tennessee Williams. So I just want to lean in and become super feminine, happy, be a southern belle. - That's great, I have some Bellas del Sur pieces for you right here. Nothing says Blanche DuBois more than this beautiful 40s floral dress with these big butterfly sleeves. - I just need a couple of mojitos, and the suitors will come calling. - This is from 1910. Here in New Orleans we are not afraid to wear

like our grandmother's mixed with something modern. - This is like totally leaning into liking naive vibes. - Here we have a feather boa and, of course, our flapper dress. - If I'm going to have this haircut and, you know, without boobs, I might as well do it in the style of the 20s. - Do you want to tell me a little about your style? -Yes.-I think Jen was also a little hesitant because she is a very feminine store and, obviously, Jen's aesthetic is different from that. - My style is a little more masculine than I think the other women on my team are.
I like button down shirts, I like t-shirts, I like leather, I don't really wear that many super bright colors. I'm open to it though because I love a good floral. And besides, I don't know much about vintage anyway. So, I like that someone respects you, I really just want to absorb everything, like a sponge. - So here we bring out a couple of beautiful pieces for you. - Cool! - This is a vintage Dolce and Gabbana. Here we have another oversized vintage blouse from Hermes. A slightly more contemporary silhouette. - Well, yes, I like that a lot.
And finally we have a very fun t-shirt with feathers. - That's great. - You can be a little more comfortable with your style. - That's great, all of this is great. - They literally just let us run the store. - I'm going to direct with this hat on. - My God, it weighs a lot. - The neck is very small. I said to Leah, isn't it a little weird to basically take photos outside and pretend this robe is clothing?
And she said, "It's really hot in New Orleans, so we wear lingerie as clothes all the time." (jazz music) There was a billowy dress that she was wearing. There were things there, like the clothes were actually more stretchy than she thought. Like Jen came back the next day and then bought something on her behalf. She bought one of the shirts she was wearing. She really liked it, it's gigantic. So I'm back in a negligee. - Yes, because you changed it, took photos with other outfits and then put it back on. Because if you don't use it once every hour you will die. - Look at these outfits. - Sets! - That's a real set. - It really is a real set. - This old thing?
It's just a typical Tuesday. - You honestly look like a Disney villain, and I mean that in the best possible way. - I know, I feel like I just need to walk and be like that. - As if I were bewitching you, that's where I got my beauty from! - Hi, ma'am. - That? Mike and I took the most amazing photos together. He is a genius. Somehow it made it look like Vanity Fair. Watching this vlog it's like, okay, what am I wearing? But then, looking at it in a photo, you think. - This is the store of our dreams. - I do not want to go.

I love that you said you reuse, reuse, it's really creative. - I feel like I generally take risks, but I want to go a step further. Like today, we really like to do everything possible. - I definitely want to play more with patterns. All the t-shirts were very fun. Alright girls, today we learned a little about street fashion in New Orleans. And tonight we will learn about Mardi Gras fashion. (women applauding) - Welcome to the Museum of Mardi Gras Costumes and Culture. First I'd like to teach you a little bit about Mardi Gras culture, the history of Mardi Gras, and then I think we'll take you into the costume closet and let you play and dress up in the real Mardi Gras king and queen costumes.
See what it's like to be in a Mardi Gras parade. - I said yes! I am a princess! - This type of costume is known as a wearable float. A structure that you fix to your body and carry with you. You're always looking for the ultimate spectacle at Mardi Gras. - But there are also things that are not exaggerated. There was an amazing team that did all this great bead work and used their bead work to represent different, amazing parts of the city. - Right now we are introducing the Ladies of Perlage, it is the art of bead work.
Each year, they choose a theme from New Orleans culture and then each member will perform that theme in bead form. A work of art that becomes a bra. - I think we have hobbies here, like if you want to go on a hike, okay? And there it's like I'm going to make a beautiful work of art for my body. - Introducing for International Women's Day 2018 Miss Louisiana Universal, Havilah Malone. She is an incredibly inspiring woman. She has a collection of more than 300 Barbie dolls. We could not find it. - This is the Treme Sidewalk Steppers Social Aid and Pleasure Club. They kick off our Super Bowl Sunday. - No way! - Yes. These costumes cost around $12,000 each. - It's like a car at a reasonable price. Helen was so great and so knowledgeable, and I think it's amazing that the people who live there pay so much care and attention to preserving the history of this city. - Let's have fun in the costume closet. - Yes, let's do it. - Enough story, ladies.
New Orleans is fun, right? - I was excited. I was like, give me glitter, give me crowns, give me velvet, give me everything. I will use it all and I did. - We have all the things here. All of this is from our private collection. These are all things that have been used before at Mardi Gras. The big back pieces behind you, the Medici collars, that's what royalty would normally wear. These are actually stilt costumes we made for a parade. If you can imagine a mosquito using these, these huge flamingos. - I want us to choose our Mardi Gras costume and we will make something like a soul train that walks like a cat up and down the hallway.
Be our own little Mardi Gras parade right now. - There are tunics, there are crowns, there are like crowns upon crowns. There were literally some wreaths that said, "This is someone's summer home" on top of the wreath. (Jen laughing) - How do I wear this? Like this? Oh. I love this. - Look at your fruit hat. - Oh, Jen. - Kiss Kiss! Who wants to kiss? - This is a different kind of skill when trying to put on this dress. Will someone shut me down? - Look at this green one you have. - This is my look.
Feel very tropical. - Wizard of Oz. - But yes, I am very attracted to fruit. - Christina! - My God. - Oh. - I am the whore queen of the mountain (bleeping). (everyone laughs) - And right now you're very nervous. - Oh I'm sorry. Oh wait, me (laughs). I just apologized for hitting me. Now it's hard to turn around. - Should we walk slowly and train our soul? - So both New Orleans street fashion and Mardi Gras fashion have a similar theme in common: go big or go home. There is a feeling that going big is beautiful.
And it doesn't matter so much what it looks like, you just shout it from the rooftops.
