Only the BEST for our DUCKS! We're building them a new house and creating a duck paradise!!

Mar 27, 2024
Hello everyone, welcome back to the farm. As you could see in the introduction to this video, the

duck

house

behind us has served us well over the last few years, that's where the

duck

s have lived, but we have big plans for the

ducks

on our farm. because we enjoy

them

a lot and we love having

them

around, they are probably some of the most important characters on our farm, so they enjoy the ducks probably as much, maybe even a little more than we do, so we are very excited to bring them on this project , it's not just a one-part project, it's a multi-part project and we're very, we're very excited about it, we were going to wait a little bit and do this later in the winter, but some things happened recently that have made it a little more important, so about two nights ago I went out at night to lock up the ducks and for some reason the ducks wouldn't come into their

house

normally, they won't have any problems, but for some reason that night they just didn't want to come in, so I went and stuck my head in the house to do some research and there was a skunk inside the duck house.

Luckily they didn't spray me, but then I backed away, it sprayed and sprayed all over the inside of the duck house, guys, it had such a strong smell we could smell it inside the house. Now this is not very close to the house, it was so strong that it came in. like the door jambs, we could smell it in the house, it was so strong, there is no way we can keep those ducks in there until we have cleaned and resolved this properly, so luckily we have a section of our brooder barn that is I don't know is using right now, so the last few nights the ducks have been staying there, so this house stinks.

More Interesting Facts About,

only the best for our ducks we re building them a new house and creating a duck paradise...

It's been 2 or 3 days and it's still so strong that we're having a hard time even being out here working, so. The first thing we're going to do today is try to get this duck house out of here and move it and then we're going to start

building

a new duck house that's going to be a lot bigger than the current one and we're actually going to make it big enough for us to walk around. inside it, so it will be a fun project. We'll build it with some used pallets we got from a local company and make this a nice fancy duck. house now we're not quite sure exactly how we're going to move this, but I built this right here on site and right now, three years after I built it, I'm not sure how sturdy it is, so we'll just do our Best effort if we can move everything in one place.

Our plan is to let it air out for a while, but then we will move it back to the area where our goats and our cows are so that our goats will have an extra place to get out of the weather if they want, if they don't want to go into the barn with the cows, but for now this thing needs fresh air for a while because it stinks bad. I'm going to get on the tractor and see what we can do. We'll see if it works well. It ended up being easier than I thought. It looks like it held up well, so we'll be able to do it eventually.

Use it for the goats now, after moving it I realized that most of the stench I think was actually on the floor and the old bedding and stuff that was in there, so I took the bucket from my tractor and I just scraped it up and put it down. and I was just going to put it in the compost pile but it stunk so much I ended up throwing it out at the edge of the woods so it still stinks a little but it's a lot better than it was now let's go downstairs, we'll get some pallets, we have them next to our driveway and we will bring them in and we can start designing the new design of the duck house when we start having ducks in the On the farm we had three ducks, now we have nine and now that we have some males, we can also start hatching ducklings, so we can further increase the size of our duck flock next spring, so we need a bigger house and also the house that Now it has really served its purpose well, we have enjoyed having it, however it is difficult to clean up and it's hard to collect the eggs because the door is so short you really have to bend down and crouch in there, and it's been very difficult.
To do so, this larger duck house will be perfect with a large door, it will be very nice for them. Well you guys said you liked seeing me on the tractor so I thought I'd show you that I can also move a stack of pallets so hey I hope you enjoyed, I do what I can around here and I really enjoy working with the tractor. Now that we have the pallets here, we'll start by just bringing in the pallets and laying them out. a rough layout, we haven't decided for sure how big we are going to make this yet but I think it will be around 8 feet by 8 feet, these are four foot pallets so I think it will work fine plus we want to be able to use wood plywood on the sides eventually, you know, finish it and since the plywood comes in eight foot sheets, I think it'll be perfect, we'll try to center it between four of our trees here.
We have a cherry tree, a peach tree, a crabapple tree and an apple tree, and we're going to try to center it between those four trees that way, hopefully, when they grow, they'll grow around it and you know they will. Since the house won't be in the way of those trees, then we'll start bringing in some pallets and lay out a rough layout, so we match these pallets with these seven pallets just to make sure that this is the location that we wanted and this is the size we want and I think it's going to be a really big size and this kind of setup is going to be good for them now it's going to be two pallets high so we've got a second floor of these to put up. but first we need to secure them together, make sure they are as level and straight as possible before adding that second level.
We will have a roof here today. We really just want to finish the skeleton of this. For us, this won't be a one day project, we just have too much going on on our farm, but so far I think it will be a good setup and a good size for these ducks before we move on to the next level. of pallets on top, what I'm going to do is place some pieces of 2x4s along the whole way that will help secure everything, give us good things to drill into and that way just you know, securing everything is much better .
Building with these pallets is nice because they are actually very nice hardwood. I built an animal shelter like this, almost identical to this one, on our farm in Arizona for our turkeys and I can almost guarantee it will last longer than any other. another shelter on that farm because that thing is not

only

heavy, but, you know, the solid wood that the pallets are made of is very strong wood, so we're going to put some two-by-fours around the edges here and then we will be ready to start placing the second level of pallets. Now our duck house is located within our garden area.
Now our orchard is still quite young, so the trees are not very big, but we are going to build this new one. The duck house in the orchard is also our long-term plan and hopefully we will achieve it this winter. It is to defend this area completely so that in the morning, when we let the ducks out, they have access to the entire garden. area but not the whole farm now the reason we are doing this is because ducks don't put themselves in a nest box like chickens do, they will just find a lag spot and roost wherever they are at the time.
So if we can at least lock them in this area of the orchard during the morning, at least we'll know that all of their eggs will be in this area right now. Many days it's like an Easter egg hunt trying to figure out where they laid eggs that day. At some point we may even add a place in the garden for them to swim. Now our plan is that in the afternoons we will still let them have free access to the entire farm, but we want this to be an area where the ducks enjoy being well, that first layer of pallets turned out incredible, it is so beautiful and resistant, that's why I love working with these palettes.
Okay, we have to get back to work, it's time to start placing the second level of pallets and I. I hope we can finish at least all the walls today. Well, we have both rows of pallets up. Now we're just going to put a board in the doorway to help secure this wall a little bit. This type of

building

is not for people who need everything to be absolutely perfect. If that's the kind of person you're building with pallets, it's never a perfect science. I've built a lot of things with them and you have to be willing to do it. you know, make adjustments as you go, the other thing is it looks pretty ugly while you're building it, but in the end it's going to be really nice so it's going to be a multi-day project, but I guarantee you it's going to be like that.
A nice house for the ducks. When it is finished, we need to make sure that this opening is the same at the bottom and top so that when we build the door it will close properly. I think it's a great start for this project. I think this size will be perfect for the ducks as it will give them a lot more space and allow us to collect eggs much easier because we will be able to walk around which will be very nice, there are still a lot of them. What to do in this project coming this weekend.
I will begin to place the roof, which does not need to be put on sides. We'll actually make solid sides out of plywood and then paint it. We need to build the gate, so you'll see a lot more about this. They know that building with pallets is a way they can really build things and save a lot of money. I know it's not for everyone and I know not everyone likes the look of things done. of pallets, but for someone who is on a budget, this is a great way to not

only

put something up pretty quickly but also save a lot of money so far on this project.
I have a box of screws and a couple of two-by-fours, you know some. more than two in fours and some plywood on the sides, the metal roof we had left over when we re-roofed our barn, so I won't even have to pay for that, this will be a great project and pretty inexpensive I guess. When we're done this will all cost me less than $200, so I'm excited because the ducks don't care what it's made of, they just want a nice warm place to stay for the winter, if you guys want it. enjoying our channel.
