Wizards and Pistons round pick Legend Rip Hamilton, who helped Detroit win an NBA championship, initially turned down Detroit, but it's hard to turn down a deal worth more than $70 million over six years, which is your reaction to the hiring of Monty Williams? Everything is not one hundred percent done yet, just to make it clear, there are many sources saying that they are in talks right now and that the trend is that, but when you look at Monty, I mean what he was capable of. to do it especially in Phoenix, right before taking the job, the Phoenix Suns only won 19 games and he took that team from a 19 win team to a team that won 34 games the

next

season, so a 50 game increase , I mean. 15 games, so with the Pistons, if he gets the job, his job will be pretty much the same.

More Interesting Facts About,

monty williams in agreement to become pistons next head coach i cbs sports...

He's got to go in there and create a culture that he's known for being an assistant and create a culture in the locker room. uh, he's always been familiar with all the guys in the league, but the best part about him is that he's able to develop young talent. Yes, up to that point, you played against Monty Williams in the NBA, met him and then watched him

become

a successful coach. league, how is he able to develop and guide young talent well again when I played against him? He was a tough type of guy, a guy that really got after it, especially on the defense side, and if you look at Imani's teams like everyone else.

His teams are actually pretty good on the defensive side of the ball. He's a guy that when I play for him to play against, he doesn't take a single play on every play he's on the court, he goes to 100 and when you look at the teams he coached, they did the same thing, but the best thing I loved about him was his relationship with his owner. When you talk to Chris Paul and Chris Paul talks about him, he always says Monty. He gives a lot of credit, you know, Chris always gives a lot of credit to the money to allow him to lead the court, but he also puts it in the right spot, so when you look at the Detroit Pistons with a guy like Kay Cunningham, a guy who is uh, learning a position and understanding that, hey, the team is going to go the way he's going, especially on the court, so I think it'll be a great marriage if they can get the deal done right.

You know, Detroit basketball has had some rough years after you left. I mean, they haven't had a winning season since 2015. 2016. They had the worst record in the NBA last season, they were 17 and 65. Do you think with Monty Williams? On the bench, the Pistons are playing again and I want to thank his old PA announcer Detroit Basketball, yeah, when you look at it, Troy has to do well. I mean, he took care of the job, he really did a great job. I'm trying to get rid of some bad contracts. I have some really good young talent on the team.
I'm very curious to see what he's going to do with the number five pick, and I know he'll probably do something great with it. uh so he feels like whoever he hires, if it's money, I think Monty will do everything he can to put the team in the right position and create that culture. I think creating a culture is bigger than anything else. uh, the Eastern Conference is tough. and we all know that you can't win games just for young talent, so I think this will be an additional piece to what we have to accomplish, especially going into next year, but we still have a lot of improvement uh with the Luke Patrol roster probably go out and grab a couple of veterans to add to this young core, but if we get money it's definitely the right move Gary Parish, our buddy has the Pistons taking super talented freshman Jairus Walker.
Outside of Houston, what do you think about that? Maybe for Monty Williams, well, again. Walker is a great young talent, a guy who can play multiple positions on the court. He played more like the fourth stretch, there in Houston, the one thing that everyone loves about him is that he's the guy that can really space the floor, he can play on the perimeter, he's not just the typical big that has to play in the paint, so when you have a guy like that, especially when you look at leadership now, you have to play positionless basketball, he's the guy that can really do that and play multiple positions on both ends of the court, yeah, that would be interesting see him because being taught by Calvin Sampson he played defense, you have to do that if he plays for Houston and Monty Williams certainly is a big proponent of playing defense during his playing and head coaching days so you lived in Detroit, you played for Detroit, you helped Detroit have one of the best seasons in their franchise history, I mean. you were a Detroit legend, what advice would you give Monty Williams upon entering the Pistons franchise to help him get off on the right foot?
I know there are a lot of dollars to help you get started on the right foot, but you have that experience from that perspective. Well, like I told you before I went there and created a culture early because what we had when I was there we had a culture and what we looked at was the guys that played before us, Isaiah Thomas, Joe Dumor, how he built that culture and built that team based on toughness and defensive mentality, so if I wanted to give her something, if I told her something, come in and be a coach with a deep mentality, which she already is, but get the young people on board.
The board will keep them in the locker room and watch as many movies as possible because this is their time. We have a great defense with Kade and Jayden Ivy. Hopefully they have a full year, especially with Kate returning from injury. I think it's going to be a There's a lot of exciting things, especially in Detroit, Michigan, well, we hope to see Monty Williams and maybe you can come in and give Monty some advice when you get to a Pistons game and we'll see you. There, so I appreciate Rip Hamilton Pistons Legend's perspective here on CBS Sports HQ as Detroit hires Monty Will Williams as its next head coach.
