Roland Fantom 06 Keyboard Review, is it better than the MPC KEY 61?

Mar 26, 2024
Hello what's going on? This is Dillio and this is my

review

of the Phantom 06. Now the Phantom 06 is a new

keyboard

released by Roland. It's kind of a slim dial version of the series 6, so let me break it down because I found it confusing. or wait a minute, this is the old six. I thought they had a

keyboard

that had a little bit more, so they have a ghost six, seven and eight, and then they have a or six, or seven and or eight, uh, if you're a yamaha user it's like having a mount and a modx right you have the mount that has everything under the sun and then the modx has kind of a slimming version so Roland has this cheaper solution that is still powerful and the reason I am doing this

review

because I had the benefit of hanging out with DJ Ape McCree, uh, shout out to him, uh, make sure you check out his channel, we sat down, we looked at that keyboard and I was trying to get my hands on this keyboard and enjoy some of the sounds on it You know, rolling keyboards have a great sound, I can't deny that they are, they are well built, there are professional keyboards, one thing you will know is that if you get a rolling keyboard, you will have good sounds, it will sound great, this has come a long way.

I have a phantom Many of the rolling keyboards are pads. I'm spoiled because I have npc pads here so I like the mvp pads

better

. The pads on the machine are a little

better

. I feel like you have a little more dynamic range on the machine controller pads. I'll say that, but let's get back to the rolling keyboard, so this keyboard I didn't like the pads and sometimes. If you press a button incorrectly you start going into a different mode and then I tried to dive into the sequencer because of my experience and maybe my tendency to work with different platforms.

However, I couldn't get the sequencer to work. I've had problems with sequences as many times in the Rolling series as I can remember, going back to the mc 909. Now the Rolling mc909 drum machine was a really cool platform, but I hated working with a sequencer and that's because I work With much. from different sequencers I just didn't like it and when I tried to do things I thought, oh yeah, I could do that. No, you can't do that on that platform. There is a learning curve with the sequencer here, but it can be learned. The thing is with a lot of things it's like you really like using it just so you don't get distracted by how you do other things on other platforms, so the sequencer I wasn't a fan of now either. the legacy sounds were great because i found sounds from the

d50 in there uh the saep electric piano that you would normally see in the 1080 jv series of modules that is there and it also has a zen mid motor that allows you to load other legacy sounds straight out of the box, it which is really cool, so you get more bang for your buck because you're actually loading high quality sounds in there.

I was playing around with some of the drum sounds and things of that nature. It's like waiting a minute. That's not 808 909, but as I dig into it and tell you, this thing has a lot of sounds and fortunately, thanks to this touch screen and the tabs that you can work with, you can explore a lot of sounds in there because it has a lot of sounds, which which is great and they are high quality, and if I were to compare that to NBC keys, I would still have to give the ghost a thumbs up because of his experience and his work with piano sounds and instruments and doing what that platform and also one thing that the phantom 06 has over the mpc keys is that the phantom o6 will load those sounds instantly when i try to download the piano sounds on the standalone mpc live standard one, what happens is that some of the sounds have a little bit to load the dialogue there so it has to be loaded uh with the phantom series every sound instantly slows down like all keyboard workstations do.

This is not something new and you will definitely get a bit more items now, what's interesting about this. is that I started looking under the hood of the phantom 06 presets and saw that each sound had four packets that are multisampled, so you have four packets for each sound, those things are multisampled and then those samples have different sample layers and stuff like that, it gets really complicated real quick when it comes to your own sound design and it takes a lot of work to get those things to sound as realistic as they do, the keybase itself was really nice, it definitely had a good platform solid and solid, as I like to say, you can feel the felt under the keys and then quickly feel a very high quality.
I think it has back feel and what's interesting too is that you also get a rolling pitch wheel and you get the traditional rolling pitch band. joystick where you go left and right you can tilt it forward but on top of that you also had standard pitch twist and standard modulation and some modes to change your instruments which is really cool now I think the sounds are Very high quality and I think it's a great platform, however, for playing it's good because it wasn't that heavy. If you're a keyboard player, you don't try to sequence on it.
I think it's cool, you can sequence in it, but I'm biased because Just like how the sequencer works on the npc when I'm making beats and stuff like that, and I would probably control the ghost from this because I'm very capable of moving very quickly here and creating groups so fast because I am very familiar with it. You can probably do the same with the Phantom. If you take the time to use it with just the sequencer, you'll probably get the hang of it pretty quickly. However, it comes from an established brand. Even though akai is starting to dip their toes into the water of keyboard workstation sounds and have great input, they still don't have the breadth or legacy of sounds that a rolling keyboard has because the

roland

definitely lasts longer. legacy of having keyboard sounds, whereas akai has a longer legacy of dealing with samples and sequencing and the traditional way I've seen people work with both is that the npc handled the sequencing but the keyboard handled the sounds, so that if I had to choose for myself with my biased opinion, if I had to choose between two keyboards between the roland phantom 06 and the nbc key 61, I would lean towards the npc key 61 solely because I have a lot of good meat and potato songs, they sound there . sample um and I can sequence really fast and have good sounds, but if I just wasn't interested in making beats and tracks like that, I'd lean more towards the phantom 06 because I think it does sample, but I don't think the sampling suite is that robust. as it is in the akai samplers and therefore it's a trade off, so either you get better sounds you get this and that or you get that in the other, both are great tools and will appeal to many musicians and producers. of joy for years to come, I think it's a good thing and that's my review of the phantom 06.
