When the DEPTH SOUNDER Reads ZERO...uhhhh

Apr 03, 2024
Hello dad, why doesn't the engine start? We're supposed to leave. We're not leaving because our starter motor has died once again. This port side always has starting problems. Starboard always has fuel bleed problems, but luckily we have a spare starter motor. It's one we rebuilt in Panama, this one is dead, we're going to rebuild it in Thailand, the starters are something that's very easy to change, it's literally two bolts, I go back and forth, the positive wire and the solenoid switch, and that that's all. so it shouldn't take you more than half an hour to do what happens with the catamaran.

You're basically going in circles if you start from a standstill with just one engine, so yeah, you should do it in five minutes, okay, hurry up, the clock is ticking. Dad's shit is always hanging there, still trying to get in that key. Hey, will it be? Yes, go, girl. You get faster at these things. I think in the Bahamas,

when

I placed the first initial order, it took me half a day, maybe even a full day first. I took out the book, read how starters should work, it was all very civilized, I felt like now you just do it because it's too hot.

More Interesting Facts About,

when the depth sounder reads zero uhhhh...

One of the great things that happened

when

we bought this boat was that it came with a ton. of spare parts The previous owner had been sailing for three years and crossed the Atlantic. It's good because when you first go out you don't really know what the hell you need, but I'm sure Ben has a list somewhere of things he wouldn't do. leaving the dock without the more you sail the more spare parts you have it's like you become more paranoid because things break all the time and if they break it's not catastrophic but then you're stuck in a port forever and it sucks and it's expensive so It's cheaper to just carry more spare parts and then at the end of the day, but the boat gets very heavy after six years.

Normally I don't sweat much, but Ben sweats like a pig. Willa is also pretty sweaty, but I'm not usually like that. a sweaty person sweats fast okay you want to get down there so that squeak I think is from the belt uh the alternator belt jumps on the alternator because I have sweat there so it's wet remember I said Ben is sweaty and I didn't pee. but he looks at this thing that's just soaked and look at that disgusting thing that's not pee it's hot did I mention it's hot in Thailand? I'm not a fan of the temperature here, okay, one more thing and then you're good to go.
when the depth sounder reads zero uhhhh
Oh, there you go. clothes pegs oh no, it's hot in here oh, why did you kick mom in the booby? So we're sitting here with the new batteries in and the new windows are in, the old windows are back in and we're looking. about what to do next and, uh, there are some things that are happening, all of which give us a little pause, some thought and some anxiety. Normally, navigating life is pretty easy, you like to choose where you want to go, you look for a weather window. and you go sometimes you have to have permits like chagos normally getting a permit is not a big deal because they leave quite a few boats in two places like that right now because of cobit everything is more difficult you have to work with sponsoring agents Good tests, yes, it is much more complicated, but right now there are all these rumors of a big lockdown in Thailand and we really don't want to go through the fact that they are closing the parks that we just visited a week and a half ago.
Two weeks ago we were supposed to go to Krabi to visit Sophie again and see how she was doing. I don't know if you all have followed her, but Sophie was a little girl that we met when we were working on the boat when she was in heart and she can't walk and I took her to the hospital. I actually haven't shown any of those pictures yet because I was trying to get to the end of putting him in a walker and braces all day in the hospital. They did an evaluation for us and we made a mold so we can make braces in the future and we're going to get a walker later, so that's interesting because a wheelchair was not the right solution and then it was a walker, so she doesn't atrophy anymore and that then her Achilles tendon stretches.
A lot of things happened today. They're going to have to return without us. We want to go back there and see how she is doing because she's been to the hospital once or twice since we got here. On the left, we left her with about a thousand dollars. The other thing that's happening is that we're trying to get to Chagos, which is basically halfway across the Indian Ocean, and to get there we first have to go down the outside of Indonesia and I don't want to hang around too long on the outskirts of Indonesia without formally registering us because greed times cover times, they may fine you, they won't arrest us, but they may drive us off the coast and at that point we are just floating on the high seas waiting. to enter chagos we have missed the northern transit windows, the other thing, so now we are thinking of entering the southern trade, so basically we have to leave the west coast of sumatra, cross the equator, cross the stagnation zone and the itcz zone and and get to the southeast trades, go far enough south with our rentals and upgrades, it's all just first world problems, I think that's something that needs to be said here, and we're not upset about that at all, like this is just logistics, yeah, just logistics of what do you do and when do you do it and where do you go?
Here we are, we are finally ready to sail and explore and we can't go to those places we wanted to sail and explore. I'm, I'm turning the turn the air conditioning back on because you have to turn it off so it doesn't make noise. I've been sweating. International travel has huge rewards right now with empty beaches and extremely competitive accommodation. We have been traveling for about five months and we are noticing the world is becoming more organized with testing, procedures and quarantines, but it has to be overlooked here in Thailand. A negative cova test is now required to travel between provinces, whether it is the harbor master or customs for the immigration ship or the head of the local village. just another hoop to jump through ok ok that's not fun although we're supposed to leave at 10 and we had some problems with the installation, the bilge pumps weren't working we couldn't figure out why it turned out to be a fuse.
There was always a fuse on the right, but then we laughed and our autopilot stopped working like he was all the way to the left and then all the way to the right as soon as you put it on autopilot. Autopilot is something important to us. I don't like driving with my hands so they're not as much fun when you're driving for hours and hours and hours anyway. Long story short, we will finally leave Yacht Haven 18 days later, 15 days longer than we had originally planned, all we can do. is laugh now all we can do is laugh everything takes a little longer now because of cobit and our code

zero

curler broke and we have ordered one that used to be attached to our curling iron it used to be attached right there but it literally cut itself in the bottom end just broke, I don't know why it's old, it's probably like 16 years old, so we ordered a new winder for code

zero

, we already have it, we replaced it further in New Zealand, these are all little things. that keep breaking on a sailboat, luckily I can count my lucky stars because these things break while we are still in Thailand and not on the high seas in the middle of the ocean, so we are coming out of sort of the northern part of Phuket and there are There are many fish traps here, crab traps and they have checked the styrofoam.
We were supposed to be here at high tide and now it's low tide so we should see two metres, which is totally fine for us, it's always stressful when it gets down. Below, are you laughing at us? I'm glad I'm not driving. When I'm driving, there's usually a riot of shouting. Are you sure, Ben, are you sure? I don't think we should do this. Me neither, just not very. Lots of water. How is your stress level? It's actually not as high as sometimes but it's pretty bad. Aid. We've had a very stressful day for some reason.
That makes it better. I don't know why we keep moving when it says zero. It's like I actually feel like I just want Ben to drive, which is fine, oh, that's point one, we're drifting, we're drifting into the

depth

s, I'll do it, but you won't help us get through it, even if it's if you are the one who did it. You say I said that if you don't help us through it's because you were going for it, are you sure you want to take that clothespin off? Yeah, we're only doing like half an hour of boat speed, so just crawling around here, so if we hit, hopefully we won't do too much damage.
I'd rather not hit. We listened to a punk podcast from one of us about the sunk cost. The premise is that you have already spent so much money. a lot of time or so much time on something that you can't stop and you move on but the problem is if it's a bad thing or a bad idea or you know a bad project or a bad passage or a bad idea to go through the superficial part just let those go. sunk costs, like letting go, it was a really good podcast, it really resonated with me because I'm one of those people who will keep going like it's the wrong thing to do because you just have to get it. until the end like I always have to like it, you know you have to get to the end, that's right, but if we find it, we'll put a link in the video, but it was an incredible podcast, I think it was the worst.
It detects that one of the three of us is not stressed at all, just having a fun time. You really like empty beer bottles. Yeah, I think that was the worst part. Any storm, uh, yeah, it looks like there could be one, but I think if we continue. we'll be fine it's not really halloween hello start over you guys are ridiculous we're in thailand near a town we anchored in when it basically got too dark to go any further because there are too many little fishing pots yeah have. There are a lot of styrofoam markings here, so it's hard to tell, but yeah, look at this, okay, you're ready for this, set, yeah, this is the grand finale.
It's almost midnight. Wait, take a look. Oops, it would help if I put it up. the rope around the winch let's say what's up wait wait I forgot to sail it's been a while wow it breaks yeah look at that thing wow I think it's a beauty do you think we're going to sail towards this fishing village oh maybe yes we literally lifted it up um it's almost midnight uh it's been a big refit on this boat um but we're done like we're really done we're going to sail tomorrow and I'll do it partially at night because it's very hot here the night is pretty good it's beautiful here at night a lot thank you for all your hard work and everything you do for us can't wait to see it in the light yes by the way it's not Halloween either This wasn't recorded that long ago.
What has been really great about sharing this news with you is reading all the comments and many of you think that no matter what you do, we will be here for whatever you decide. That's pretty cool, I think, because on YouTube you know the views fluctuate and go up and down depending on what thumbnail you have or how fast it is, and here on Patreon it's like no, we're here, we'll stay here and thank you. We appreciate it very much
