Film Theory: The Devil Made You Do It! (Harmony and Horror)

I escaped. Good? Good. She's here too. Throughout all the videos, if you pay attention, you will notice a ghost appearing in the background of several shots. She appears in Are_Y0u_HappY? like a ghost that remains in the background, in Thr0ugh_Broken_WindOws she is behind the image of her son, in Wake_uP_B4nZo.mp4 she emerges from the shadows, in Henry.mp4 she is looking at the toy store. And most importantly, in Go0d_By3_ArThur.mp4, she extends a hand and begs the viewer to "Come with me." But why? Why has she invaded these tapes, this archive of all of Martin's sins?

Why is she breaking the fourth wall to tell us to go with her? Why does she talk to us? Well, it's because we are Martin. We are the jester. We are literally the bad guy in this story. Rewatching these tapes over and over again, obsessing over the details of our lives, trapped inside this nightmare. At the top of the

theory

, I mentioned how most loads of the series begin with a VHS tape inserted into a VCR. What I didn't mention is that if you look closely, you can see the reflection of the character watching the tape inside the TV screen.

That's a great detail. And whose reflection looks at us every time? Martin, the jester. He is watching the tapes. And Gloria is using the tapes to try to communicate with him and with us. In the first season finale, Ple4se_C0me_B4ck_T0_M3 Gloria's twisted face calms and her wide-eyed scream turns into solemn sadness. It is here that she reveals that she was the one who played these tapes for us, showing us the story, begging Martin to see what he did, how he hurt the family, how everyone was proud of him before his deal with the

devil

, how he still You can go back to them and fix things.

And for a moment it seems like there might be hope. The beginning of this video reveals the ReSt_As5ure.mp4 field where all the fears and regrets of her life can't hurt her. In fact, that was where he had his first date with Gloria, where they began their relationship, which led to his family. That's a place where he doesn't have to be the jester, he doesn't have to be the toy maker or whatever it is that's turned him into his deal with the

devil

. But Martín can't come back. At least he doesn't want to.

Whether it's his anger, his regret, or his corruption, Martin is too lost. He smashes the television and banishes Gloria's spirit as the screen shatters. There you have it. That's the first season of Harmony & Horror, or at least the best I can do. Reuniting this fragmented narrative into the heartbreaking story of one man's destructive need for perfection and control.
