Instant Analysis - HC Craig Berube Speaks & Mitch Marner Rumours Are Heating Up!

May 29, 2024
It takes... I guess the desire or willingness to work together. And they kind of need each other to make that work, and if it doesn't work, if that dissipates for some reason or if it doesn't show up, I mean it could be a lose-lose situation, right? I mean, if the Leafs can't find a way to move him in a way that makes sense for them, and he gets an extension as part of it, then he'll return to Toronto in the fall. What is an important season for, right? It's a platform season entering unrestricted free agency. What does that look like?

For example, the pressure on him, the discussion around him, I mean, I think that's what everyone relies on, it's actually as much as you, since he's a local guy and he's obviously a big star of the team, you already know. I'm not sure it makes sense for everyone to come back. Yes... I think they have to find a solution together. But I don't get the sense that that's happening yet, so after July 1st it makes a lot of sense for him, just because it's his final bonus payment, so, it's... and then in terms of real money, I want That is to say, he is still an expensive player.

He's hit just under $11 million in cap space for next season, but the actual dollars on the line aren't much, and it could actually give the next team more ability to sign him to a higher number on an eight-year deal. because in the Note they say, 'Okay, here's your C; this is what the cap looks like for nine years, but the real dollars at the door are here' and so there's a way that I think about when, again, we're talking about aligning incentives where necessary. aligns with the Leafs so that maybe they can get a return that makes sense, you know, do other things that make sense and then for him, it allows him to sign a contract that he can't even necessarily get on the open market and certainly In The open market, if it goes to July 1, will only be able to get a contract for seven years.

And when you make the amount of money he's going to make per year, you're talking about no small amount of money to do it. So you know it's going to take a lot, you really have a needle and thread to make this work.   But I do think that when you take a step back, when you take away the emotion, when you take away the hyperbole of everything surrounding the Leafs, it just makes sense that Mitch would want to maybe map out his next spot if they want to move. Moving on without him and signing an extension this summer instead of... you know, as much as I know that Darren Ferris' clients are often taken straight to free agency, there are risks in that.

Especially under these circumstances, if he makes a tough deal or if he says absolutely no, I won't consider being moved... I think it's more than likely that it will happen, but until the end he has to approve it. That's how it is. "Just because it's more than likely while we're here at the end of May, a lot can happen between then and now." There it is, right there. You're hearing a lot about Mitch and most of it doesn't happen, right? You're hearing all these different business pitches and all that; The fact that those specific trade proposals are not being carried out does not mean that there is not a trend in the direction of dealing for Marner.  CJ also said John Tavares, who we've also been swapping with in our heads and will almost certainly stick around.
He left the door open so Tavares could leave, but he can give up the total non-movement on him, the guy has three kids, he's on the wrong side of 30, I just don't see that happening. But the idea that Mitch Marner could be traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs does not fall from the sky. It is based on reality. Now there was a clip that went viral today: the Nashville Predators' busy bees today. Barry Trotz, general manager of the Nashville Predators, busy bee. He traded Ryan McDonagh back to the Tampa Bay Lightning, got a couple of picks and freed up a ton of cap space by doing that.
Why would the Nashville Predators need cap space? A lot of people keep saying that there is some kind of deal where Marner could be traded for Saros or that I saw there was one for Cody Glass.   Regardless of the names involved, Mitch Nashville.  Well, Alex Daugherty, a Predators writer for The Tennessean, asked Barry Trotz about Marner specifically and I talked to him. He said I could use the clip, here it is: “By with I mean something like 25 million. I haven't done the math exactly, but it looks something like this, I mean, there are a lot of big names out there, one of them is Mitch Marner.
Is that a name you're looking at now that you have the money to take it on? Is that a name that... I don't think Mitch is a free agent? Okay, that wouldn't be uh I I I I've just been... there's been trade talks, that's all I'm saying. Well, yes, no, well, they have to talk. me. I haven't talked to them, so it's not like I know, but I read the same thing as you. "They are just rumors." OOOO it looks like a nothing hamburger it looks like a nothing hamburger but it's not! Alex did mention some additional context to me for this clip.
The question that was asked before Alex asked this question was specifically about free agents. Which free agents might the Predators be interested in? So when Alex asked specifically about Mitch Marner, Trotz said, "Oh, I didn't know he was a free agent." Now I want you to watch the clip again. "I don't think Mitch is a free agent, okay, I wouldn't be, you know, I've just been, there's been trade talks, that's all I'm saying. Well, yeah, no, well, you guys have to talk to me. No I've talked to them, so it's okay, not that I know, but I read the same thing as you.
It's just rumors. "Alright, I'm about to become a body language expert, okay?" I think a lot of people are looking at this saying "that's a stupid question. Trotz can't talk about Marner." He can't talk about Marner and not be fined for tampering.  But Alex can absolutely ask about it. And at the end of the day the quote was deny deny deny but there were some interesting little murmurs in the denial. Trotz He said, "Oh, yeah, no, well, you guys have to talk to me. I haven't talked to them, so it's okay, I don't know, but I read the same thing as you. "It's just rumors." They have to talk to me, I haven't talked to them.
Not that I know of. Have you ever seen a murder mystery on television and there is a character who definitely did it? That's the kind of answer they would give! I haven't talked to them that I know of. There are a few ways to interpret that. he's a very busy man and he legitimately doesn't remember if he ever talked to Leafs about anything, let alone Mitch Marner. Number two, he asks them to talk to him, which is spicy. Number three, Barry Trotz, doesn't. he's the only member of the Nashville Predators front office, so maybe he hasn't talked to the Leafs about Mitch, but maybe someone else has Four and this one like we need to go to this one more often. , he's just lying there with his pants on fire.
But I didn't miss that at the end of that clip he admits: he's seen the rumors too. Listen, I'm not saying Mitch to the Preds, I'm not. I'm not even going to say 100% that Marner is going to be traded. What I'm saying is that really smart people who know what's going on seem to think they're trading him.   We'll see how that progresses. He has a signing bonus that will be paid on July 1 and then will make much less money for the team that acquires him after that bonus is paid. Then he can be traded to a team and that team will have him for a year in which he will make less than a million dollars, and they can sign him to an 8-year contract extension.   Hmm.
Ultimately it comes down to Marner's willingness to waive his no-movement clause, it seems like there's a good chance of that happening. I guess the question is where? So what do you think? From the press conference? Marner's stuff? Of all this? Please leave a comment in the comment box below but for now that's all for this one, thank you so much for watching, click like if you like this video, click subscribe if you really liked it, tell all your friends : Barry Trotz. spicy same phrase.
