What’s really going on with Tally Ho - major updates.

May 02, 2024
Hello, my name is Leo and I am a boat builder and sailor. A few years ago I bought a very old and quite famous wooden sailboat for the price of 1 dollar and since then I have been rebuilding that boat from KE to with the help of many amazing people. I've felt like I need to communicate

what

's

really

happening in the workshop on the boat for a while, but it's been hard to know how to do that now. I think from the videos I've been posting, it might seem like we're plotting pretty comfortably, just doing jobs and slowly working towards launch, but in reality the truth is that things here are more stressful, more hectic, and more critical than ever.

Somehow this channel is struggling, although we have

really

fantastic support from you, our audience, so I am very grateful for our views and subscribers, which have remained fairly stable and not increased for quite some time. The number of people paid to work on the ship and the overall costs associated with the project have been increasing steadily for several years for this reason and also because I think it is really important for my mental health. I'll talk more about it. that later I am determined to move this project forward quickly enough so that we can launch and sail talho properly this summer in the hope that launching and sailing the boat will keep the videos engaging and attract a wider audience if we don't.

More Interesting Facts About,

what s really going on with tally ho major updates...

If we don't manage to sail the boat properly this summer, we may have to wait until next summer and another winter. Doing the same projects in the shipyard would be really difficult now that this self-imposed deadline has led to more activity and more project management work. It's been really hard to keep up with everything, keep everything on track, let alone keep everything documented, just to illustrate the point and bring you up to date with where we are now, here's a quick list of some of the work. which we've been working on recently that hasn't appeared in videos yet, so we've been prepping the hull for antifouling paint, which includes coating all the metal work.

We've been cleaning the propeller. The propeller has overlapped the propeller shaft. and is ready to be coated with your own special protection. We have put stuffing in the stuffing box. We have been applying the last few coats of paint to the top sides. Does it tilt and roll or tilt and I forget

what

it is? I'm shooting Bailey's Rollover, put it together, roll it around and roll it over, that's what you've got. We have been preparing to paint the Cove line. We still have to set up the platform. Fair leads cleats, sheet pad eyes and back braces.

We still have to finish designing and making the intestine roller and anchor assembly. We are in the process of rebuilding and protecting the original jide damper or sheet horse. I still have to engrave the boat's name on the transom. We still have To mount the stern light, we have been designing the rudder that has been cast and we have been working to install it, but it is not finished yet. We still have to design and manufacture the adjusting tab lever arm for the self-steering and in fact we design, arrange and manufacture the entire self-steering mechanism. We have been designing the Gallows pen and are about to start manufacturing them.
We have installed the cable glands on the cover. We have made the light boxes for the navigation lights. We have made shims in the deck that the dent will fit into and installed eye bolts to hold it uh we have a cover made for the main skylight hatch the rest of the covers are in progress we have designed the tie pins and they are in the process manufacturing, we still have to do the trim posts, we still have to sand the entire deck, do a lot of detailing, add more varnish to various things around the deck, a lot more to the transom, uh, we've done the bays for the mustache rigs, we still have to make the ble for Bob's rig, um, and that brings us pretty well to the rig in terms of the rig, there are a lot of blocks to make all the The blocks with the metal straps are in progress, the lower shrouds and all four remain rigged but we still have to fix the jib bracket and the upper M the day after we raised the upper mast last time we had to take it down because We only put it up to measure the upper M rounds and we had to disassemble it to finish the upper M fragments.
They are finished, but they need to be fixed. We still have to rig the Bob mount for the bow and tackle for that, same with the whiskers or B shrouds, you have to fix all the headers, handle the HS main and Peak launch, we have to fix the rear stairs, the deck raise the main sheet, the head saw blades we have to set up. Upstairs the JY shock, mount the ratlings and we have to set up all the rigging, shopping, uh, for all those haads, so there's a lot to do on the deck, uh, what's

going

on down below?
Hi Joe, what are you working on? Hi Leo, well I'm working on a Nema 2000 backbone, oh, exciting, it's cool, so you have two of them on the boat and this is the one that is dedicated to taking information from the senders that are in the different tanks and send them to the Victron system. so you can see your tank levels on your screen uh victron there mhm, how's it

going

okay? It's something like 5050. I'd say okay, tell us more. It's uh, yeah, it's a these things can be a little tricky to get everyone talking. each other when they are not all from the same manufacturer, so the manufacturer of the emitters is Miratron and obviously all the electrical stuff is Victron, so excited, I turned on the Nema 2000 backbone and received some information for Victron, but not all.
I got the fuel tanks after playing around a bit, I put the fuel tanks in there but not the water tanks so I went down a rabbit hole of troubleshooting using this nifty little tool. I got the Digital Yacht navigation doctor which allows you to see what is connected to the system, it also works as an electrical test, it tells you the voltages on the lines and you have good connections through your network and I checked everything I couldn't solve until I kind of had an epiphany and realized that the two Cinders in the water tank weren't actually working, which was the last thing I thought about because it's unusual to have two devices fail at the same time, so, Why do you think they might have failed?
Joe, so after thinking about it a bit, I remembered that we did some TIG welding on the tank with these devices plugged in and I think the voltages from the TIG welding fried the little circuit boards on the transducers for the water tank emitters. I'm nice I would say I'm pretty confident in that analysis so yeah let's try to replace them and see if it works well yeah I'm pretty sure it will so that was cool. I went and checked the whole system, checked all my wiring very thoroughly, everything seems to be working fine and in fact the Merron devices are talking to Victron so I'd say overall a win.
Yes, great, and it was really. I take responsibility for the welding error. It was me and another guy who did that. Yes, it's interesting. I didn't think about that at the time either. I'm a little curious. I think so. it had actually been connected to the system so that all grounds were at the same potential. I think it probably would have been nice if it wasn't connected to the system. I think that's what caused the damage, but they run at very low power. voltages, so they're probably pretty sensitive to that stuff, well that's a good problem to solve some good detective work, yeah it's fun, I like doing that stuff, yeah thanks D, yeah you bet they have There's been a lot going on here and there's still a lot going on.
Remains to be done, the switch panel behind me is working great, has its labels on and is all operational. We have been working on wiring the Nema 2000 system that connects all the instruments and talks to the computer. That's almost it. complete, I'm also working on the Ethernet system that connects the radar and depth sound. The navigation computer has been connected and is working. We've hooked up the tank transmitters, but we still have some troubleshooting to do. We still have to solve them. to connect the GPS and VHF antenna and test all the navigation electronics, all the interior lighting is practically complete now.
We still have to do the lighting in the lazaret and there is still a lot of work to do on the navigation wiring. lights and extended lights and other cables up to the M, as well as for radar etc., most of the domestic plumbing is complete, gray water sumps, fresh water tanks are working, but we still have to connect the sink in the kitchen with faucet for that and drain for that uh, now we have a shower installed in the head that looks great, the living room table is working very well just needs a little more finishing work and some details, There has been a lot of interior trimmings made and fitted to the boat, including some pretty interesting lamination by Nick to get around the curves on the CTI.
A lot of painting and varnishing work is now being carried out below, but there is still a lot to do. surface area and here a lot of layers to protect the wood, we have been working on interior canvases and there is still more to do, so we are talking about Le Cloths, nativity cushions, curtains, those types of things that are now interior doors. varnished and ready to be put back on the boat, there is a little more work to do, on the engine room door, adjusting the latches and hardware, we have built several bookcases and other shelves throughout the boat, for the cabins, the saloon, most of them are built and just need to be installed, we still have a lot of work to do on the four peaks of the Chain Locker.
That design changed a bit recently, so we're building a new Chain Locker, so there's quite a bit of work. To do there we still have to wire and install the joining system. We have to hold the skylight hatch. We have a lot more systems testing and engine starting. We have more ventilation to install and simply. A lot of detail and finishing work has been done throughout the interior, but now we're getting a lot closer here. It feels much more like an actual living space and a functional space, and that's really exciting, on top of everything we have. the capson project, which is a complex project in itself, and there are several things going on here that have to do with that, including the capson base, socket, sperling tube, chain guide, chain stop and the chain locker, the chain roller, various things to do. with the capston the capson itself is with Keith Rucker in Georgia you've probably been following his videos hopefully um and then the engine fix is with um Websters boat Machinery in the UK uh so there's a lot going on. things with the various moving parts we have.
We're trying to get everything working, hopefully soon. Sales is a huge project and I will talk a lot more about sales in a dedicated video soon, but basically I will be working with two lofts in different locations around the world. And the sales. They are being manufactured and obviously we are trying to make sure they are all consistent and very high quality. That has taken a lot of work and there has also been a lot of work done more recently on stability. I have been working with naval architect Jack Gford. Again, I'm trying to figure out exactly how the boat is going to float when it hits the water.
Now we have a little more information and that is helping us with our internal ballast, so we have started making internal ballast ingots. We've given them a custom shape because they need to fit between the frames to make the best use of our very limited build space, so that's been happening, the guys have been melting lead into ingots and we just started putting the first of those in. In the boat, there is still much more for Casto. I have also been doing a lot of shopping and research to get equipment for the boat and there is still a lot more to do including life raft, dirty motor, life jackets, leashes, wet weather gear and more. spokes fenders running lines bombs charts and all sorts of other things that are necessary for long distance sailing and living on a boat your drill upside down uh oh my gosh that was a surprise the old drill upside down and look at this the old drill reverse squat Do you want to take a set to tell us what you're doing?
Yeah, well, I have my left leg right now and inside the chain locker it's kind of a mix, your right leg, yeah, you're right, thank you, it's like a vertical. the pipe is Chain Locker, yeah, I call it, I call it The Chain Chimney, okay, and that's the important thing, yeah, so the problem with a bigger, wider type of chain locker is that as the chain come in, many times it will. How to do anmound in a certain place and it will have a maximum size on itself and, you know, it will turn over and form a tangle and, a lot of times, in boats this size or in bigger boats or whatever you want.
Have someone look after the chain locker as your weighing anchor and shred the chain, but with this chain locker it will flake and there is much less chance of it tipping over when it's just in such a restricted area, so it's essentially like a one-handed operation where you can handle the whole thing from the cockpit from the deck from the deck and we can take this space that my body is in right now and use it for other storage for fenders or line or sheet or sails or um life preserver or or you know rubber ducks or um you know soda uh candy uh you know yeah teddy bear teddy bears yeah thanks buddy just wait have fun on your ownStay there yeah okay bye so those are just some of the jobs we've been working on that need to be completed before we can go sailing this summer, not to mention launching the boat and testing the systems. the engine testing the hybrid uh manipulating sales going on sale testing to make sure everything works probably manipulating a bunch of things that we found don't work as well as we thought, but anyway with all this work going on, I've It turned out to be very difficult to document everything well and I'm not complaining, it's my fault.
I made this project really unnecessarily complex and that was for a variety of reasons, my own perfectionism, which is definitely a bad thing sometimes, and then also just. the pressure of having everyone you know, a lot of people around the world watching my work and seeing what we're doing here and just wanting to try to maintain a high level of work, a high level of video, all of that, of course, combined with the complexities. From trying to fund this project through social media, to now managing all of that takes a lot of time and effort and I say that just to explain why I haven't been able to document all of these projects as well because I feel pretty bad about it.
And I've tried to get other filmmakers and editors on board, but what I found is that it really takes someone with a deep understanding of Wooden Boat and also storytelling and editing skills and a lot of time to make these videos. the standard I want them to be at and I haven't found anyone so far who has been able to do that and that's why I kept making the videos myself now I'm focused on getting the boat into the water because I think it's the best for the project , but I really want to document it as best I can and I can focus on specific works and if there are specific things that you've seen today that you'd like to know more about. about, please let me know in the comments which ones I intend to read, all the comments, even if I can't respond to all of them, and I will make videos on specific areas and try to keep everyone more up to date. a broad overview of what is happening now before continuing.
I just want to briefly say that it would be a great help for this project if we can increase our subscriber count a little bit, so if you look uh and not subscribed maybe you should consider clicking the Subscribe button and if you want to share this project with your friends, That would mean a lot too. Now I know this video has been a little different than normal because you haven't seen a lot of work actually being done, but we have caught up with a lot of work that has been completed, a lot of work that is in progress, and a lot of work that They still have to be done and I really wanted to bring everyone up to speed. speed actually where is the ship now where is the project now what does the overview look like what's the plan what's the goal um and we'll go into more detail on more specific jobs in the next few videos and I'm really interested in I know exactly what They want to see.
I have a lot of images in the bank, so to speak, of some of the projects we talked about today and some we didn't talk about today. And then there is much more. We can film a lot more detail that we can go into, but I want to know what you want to see. I also talked a little bit about how stressed I've been, how much work it's been to handle this recently, um, I hope I haven't. Go on about that too much because overall, I just want to make it clear that I'm very grateful to be able to do this and that we had a great time here.
For the most part, we really enjoy the work and it's just that way. It is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to be able to do a project like this and then be able to look forward to sailing the ship. Truly, although it may be difficult at times, although it is challenging, the predominant overwhelming feeling is one of immense gratitude towards being able to do this and I am very aware that it is only possible thanks to a huge amount of luck and the incredible support and generosity of our incredible audience, who literally make it possible for us to do this work from the bottom of my heart, thank you very much and see you next time, greetings.
