I FIXED One of My Worst Paint Jobs in My Own Home Garage!

May 04, 2024
look at these guys look at these guys look at these guys we did it we did it we did it we did it we did it we did it wow thank you thank you I feel good ah welcome back to the crime scene the fisheye the crime is one of the most disastrous pollution problems any

paint

er can face. I must say that I feel honored once again. These are problems I had when I was

paint

ing in my parents'

garage

and I felt a flashback to about 15 years ago and I'm like you know this is a great opportunity to learn with my fellow Paint Society subscribers so I want to thank you all because you guys have left numerous amounts of comments and none of the comments were not in line with what the fish could have caused. eye problem, so today in this episode we are going to explore and change everything around us and we are going to try to repaint this and see how it looks and if you are new to this channel, this is our Corvette C5 project.
i fixed one of my worst paint jobs in my own home garage
We have been working in our

home

garage

for over a year doing small DIY projects, priming, sanding and doing lots of revisions to get your project done in your own workspace. Now, when it came time to paint well, we found ourselves in a bit of a complicated situation because now we have a lot of contamination problems. In the last video I was bragging about how great my compressor and air filtration system was, but in a moment you'll find out that it wasn't that great. As I thought, I want to thank each and every one of the comments because they were very valid and we're going to go over some of those comments now and what people said and whether it really could have caused all that pollution.

More Interesting Facts About,

i fixed one of my worst paint jobs in my own home garage...

The problem now is that one of the main things I thought it might have been is when the car sits and has been in the cabin like this, since this is a new cabin, all the flat surfaces had fish eyes, none of the doors. on the side or side panels Below the midline there were fish eyes or contamination so possibly some of the paint booth was released and someone said it possibly made it to the surface although it was very clean who knows , that could also be another problem. Now another problem that people said it might have been is not letting the paint dry enough and not being in a normal paint booth like I normally do.
i fixed one of my worst paint jobs in my own home garage
I usually let the paint dry but in about 10 minutes it's ready to go because it's moving air at a much faster rate obviously in an inflatable booth or anything other than Boo the paint will take a little bit longer to dry, so in this episode, when we go to paint this, we're going to allow those layers to really come off a little bit. They were saying that you may not have fish eyes, but for all you know, you may have some kind of contamination problem and may be moving on to your next trainer too soon. One thing I will say is that I don't even think these were normal fish eyes.
i fixed one of my worst paint jobs in my own home garage
They were craters, these reached the base layer, they were very, very bad now, sometimes what happens is that you don't see these fish eyes until it's time to clean up the figures, in the last part you think everything is fine and then you know that disaster breaks out. They were so bad they couldn't be touched up, guys, I had to spend a good amount of time using a 320 grit to completely remove them. Thank goodness for my 3M extraction sander uh it picked up all the dust so we were able to keep the car right where it was and we were able to sand all the panels with a 320 grit and then we went over it again with a 400 grit and let me tell you there was no possible way to fix this paint job.
I didn't even do it. I'll show you the

worst

because I had actually watched a race later halfway through the door once when I was trying to fill those fish eyes, but what a humiliating experience and that's why we're here right now. solve all those problems or at least try to figure out what's going on and the first thing we're going to do is start with our air compressor system, we're going to start at the origin of the compressor. system we're going to do a little maintenance and then move on to make some changes with our air filtration system, so let's get into it and get our compressor components ready that we're going to change now, this could really help.
Out a bit, from what I understand, scroll compressors work very well and it worked very well while I was painting. I didn't have any pressure drop now with the cover removed. I must say I really like it with the cover. on, but it's cool to see the inner workings of the real machine. Now we are going to drain the oil today and replace the moisture separator and also the oil filter. Now it comes with a moisture separator, which is pretty good, but the problem is that sometimes it gets very trapped with moisture and E what came out with this solution allows you to drain the water that enters the oil tank first by releasing initially this valve and allow the water to come out first and then stop it once you start to see the oil now this would screw up here and you would lose the cap unless you

fixed

it and cut a hole in the side.
Now I will say first on the channel that Eastwood will come out with a prototype like For now I will receive it, it will be a landline here and soon it will be available so you can use it on your current qst and all the new versions will come with it, where it will automatically drain any of the The moisture in here will be a tube that will come out and you will still be able to use the cover if you are lucky enough to have it. However, the new units will not come with the cover, there are just too many problems when talking to them.
Eastwood with these actual covers and basically everything due to shipping and damage, so now just for reference, this is the old and the new, so you can see. I feel good that we're doing this oil change trip based on just that so guys change the oil now that we're all drained we'll go ahead and add our oil this is the uh this is the qst oil the other oil coming out of it, the old stuff, it just looked a little dirty. and after we add more oil into the chamber, it may be hard to tell, but it's almost there, so we're ready to get on with it, so let's complete the rest of the maintenance.
The next thing is to replace them, they now said. that these guys are pretty tight and this guy here is a moisture trap or separator that's in a compressor, which is cool. I don't know if any other compressor has this. It would be great if that was the thing, um, but I talked to Mark at Eastwood and he told me it's a good idea to change this at least three or four times a year. I mean, look at this here guys, it's got some corrosion right there, that's an indication of moisture, really very interesting, okay. a little dirty rag here and then this is a new one, you can see obviously this one is new and I'm not going to tighten it with the pliers here, I'm just going to tighten it with a good hand and for the oil, put a little bit here and once again , hand tighten it, okay, I think that's going to be good over here and the air filter is here.
I don't think it needs to be changed, but I'll change it anyway. the old one this is new I don't think it matters but since we're doing everything it's good to know you can replace parts on your compressor just like that they go ahead and turn it on and make sure everything is good turn it back on this thing, make sure nothing's leaking, like I said, we'll revisit this area for auto drain later, but for now let's figure out how we're going to change all of this and next I'm going to install this whole filtration system now.
I told you before in the last video. I was bragging. It's like I have the air dryer. I understood this cool thing, well, this just cools the air and then. I like that I have the air filtration system right here, which I took off now, one of the guys commented Ricardo, he actually won a last giveaway, so I was very grateful for him saying, "take a look inside and see if There's really something there." This was actually being used as a drip valve. I guess you could say I had some kind of manga here. I don't even know if this is a filter maybe you guys can tell me but this was there like good but it comes with an option that I didn't even check and I should have known that it comes with an option for desktop accounts that come as a jar and that definitely would have helped if that was the problem, but I can guarantee you one thing: we are going to completely eliminate any oil factor with this filtration system, this was an expensive type, it costs about $675, okay, there are much more options cheap I'm going to link them in the description, you don't have to Buy this, but I'm telling you, I didn't want to have any problems.
I want to make sure I delete it and then I started talking to the candy man again. He told me: Listen, you don't want to contaminate your air dryer. put a filter in before, we'll go ahead and install it, all good, this is actually not that hard and it's two, okay, and that wasn't too bad. I have it all set up here now, this will be for my dedication. air hose that's going to go to the paint booth and this is going to be for the hose reel now obviously that hose is going to be too short now so I ordered another one and when it arrives we'll just plug it in here but we're good to go here, hopefully with the three stages here, uh, it says at least on this one, on the first one it says water separator, on the second it says oil separator and then a carbon filter, so the three stages are great, much better than the ones we had.
So let's go ahead and attack the pre filter before the air dryer and here are the last guys so I just grabbed some clamps to mount it which is going to work so basically now what we have here is we have a compressor. um making air and sending that air directly to the air filtration, the first trap that will suck it in, hopefully, it will go back to the air dryer that will cool it down, right, it will cool it down, it will travel further, okay. I'm going to travel 30 feet up and down, so it's going to cool down even more and then if there's anything left on that line, it's going to hit this three stage oil filtration, water filtration, all filtration set up.
I'm praying this works. Guys I'm praying this works I mean because I went through a lot with this and back in the cabin this is what it looks like after everything has been sanded now on a really bad burn or the areas where it really I had to improve. aggressive, um, I just applied some UV primer, this cures with UV light and we're going to go ahead and apply a base coat to everything, there's no point in trying to apply the blue in some areas and the black in some areas that have. stuff everywhere so let's start from scratch and do it, so I'll end here with the little sanding.
I'll clean the whole car now, something you don't need to do if you use the right plastic. Do you see this side out? It's a special plastic, which means it won't chip. It will hold the paint. It's a treated side. Okay, so it's not chipping. So I wouldn't recommend this more than once. I mean, yes I have another fault here. I'm going to completely start masking it again and since we're much closer to having everything ready, I'm actually going to hold this air for about, I'd say a good 5 minutes, let the compressor run. cycle a couple of times try to take everything out, let it sit, come back and do it again.
I want to see if there's any kind of oil, water, anything that's making its way through here or at least pushing out the rest that might be in a line. If that is the case, through the air hose and dispose of it thoroughly. I've been sitting here for 5 minutes, guys, the trigger is fully compressed. I'm not impressed with anything here and I'm more impressed, not a drop of that compressor holding the trigger all the way down all the time stayed at the PSI I had set on such an impressive compressor for that size. I think we're good, let's finish the cleaning right now, there are two different types of cleaners that we can use here and we're supposed to use both.
I like glass cleaner. This will really help remove fingerprints and different things like that. It does not contain ammonia, so there is no sense discovered or anything additional on the panel, leaving the film and then. uh there's an Ultra Universal Surface Cleaner prep ball, this works for um too, wax, grease, fingerprints, all that good stuff. I put this guy here, you can use that and then this, right out of the can, uh, once again, Walmart, I have some more, right? This is the best kept secret right now, you can get them on Amazon. I'll put a link but they're cheaper at Walmart guys 15 bucks it doesn't get any better than these you throw them away when you're done and no.
I don't have to feel bad about it, so we'll go ahead and clean this all up and then we'll be ready to give it another chance. Now you can see on the stand here, I put brown paper instead of the white. It's that thicker construction paper that you get at Home Depot and it's a little thicker and it holds it down, it doesn't fall out as much. I have my Air Makeup pretty good. I have that filter closed because I want everything to come out here.to create more suction and a lot of you were saying, "That could be the problem with the air pushing through here, that could have been your problem introducing fish eyes, possibly, but I really think it was the compressor there because we did it." . a lot of work and after my findings I really hope that's the one I also went ahead and put some paper over here.
I saw some dust from sanding so I masked off around this area. It is not a bad idea. Now I like to use the Sprayway Glass Cleaner water-based cleaner first because this requires a little more time to dry and when you go to do the other solvent-based cleaner, you have another chance to get any water-based cleaner that it's still in the cracks and hasn't dried completely, so I just like to put this here. and let it sit for a moment and when it sits for a moment what it does is it basically brings any of those contaminants to the surface, you don't want to just spray it on and wipe it off, let it get into the panel. a little bit and then we'll go back to basics here, we'll do our best to clean it up on One Direction and not get it all over the place, so if there's any contaminants, we'll basically try to clean it off the panel now.
At this point it's probably not a bad idea, plus if this car was outside I cleaned it with Dawn's original dish soap, original, no extra sense, a lot of people in the comments say: Don original and I'm 100% agree that's a great way to really thin out the panels before they hit the paint booth. see here, let it sit for a couple of minutes and it is a great, effective and affordable water based cleaner. If you have been using this water-based cleaner, please let me know. I know a lot of people don't know this, but I also know a lot of people do know about this little secret of ours: stick with the solvent base that you have to put in a pump sprayer and know that you can't just go to your local hardware store and get the pump sprayer used for gardening, the solvents will eat the seals and everything that is alive will leak in a day, ok this was one of iada, this is a very very very good pump sprayer it is also It's a little expensive, but I will tell you that you will go through pump sprayers left and right until you buy a quality one and you will end up sterilizing paying the same amount of money, which is why some people like to put it on the microfiber first and then dry it .
I just prefer to put it on there and the reason I like to do this is because it will once again lift any contaminants to the surface. Well, you put it there wet and then you clean it. This is also a good way. to check your body work at the last minute, make sure everything is good, if it's not good, take it out now, if I don't get this paint job right on the second try, here's my brother-in-law's car, it might end leaving my sister. So I really have to place all of this and take my time because I really don't want that to happen.
See, this is what it will look like when it's painted. Can't it look like this right now? Can we just? freeze it, oh, it doesn't work like that, but we're going to make it work today so far. Alright, we'll go over the basics real quick. I won't show you much about that because it's the same thing. As the last video and generally on the bass, everything is going well, but we're going to go over that and then we'll start talking clearly when we get to that point and because that's when the problems start to arise, but I had a quick question for you.
I couldn't find any information on this on the air dryer, how early do I put it on before I send air in there or if I'm going to paint say at 12:00 do I put it halfway on? an hour before I put it on a few hours before I paint in the garage maybe once a month maybe I just started the project now so it's a little more frequent but I turn it off when I'm done so let me know How does that work? You keep it on all the time if you are painting projects all week or you turn it off until now.
Very good, the dirt trainer dries quite well. Everything looks pretty smooth. No fish eyes, well, that's not it. It doesn't mean anything until there's a clear coat, let's move on to the base right now, here we are, one more cat that I put off camera, but before I do that, I'll show you what I did. I ended up sanding this a bit. a little bit and I'm going to show you what I use. I'm using a uh k600 hand pad, you can see it's got the blue there from the sanding and I think I'm figuring out what's going on.
I'm finding out what's going on. Here look here after applying the last coat. I don't see any fish eyes. I'm taking my time and not applying the paint as wet. I'll tell you the last time I did this whole situation from start to finish from the ground up. Of course it was maybe 4 40 minutes is not enough time now I'm taking all day I'm putting on foundation I'm going to go in for lunch I'm putting on foundation I'm going to do something else around the house and I'm not going to get so wet when I put it on very very wet it has fish eyes everywhere but just to show you what I did I went over it and this is nice and dry it's dry for about 20 minutes and you can use the water based cleaner to help you like the Sprayway because you might find look at this like a little bit of hair here, okay, so you have to take it out or at least sand it down so it's smooth and then when you put it on. your basis on this will be nice again so now I think what I'm doing is different from last time is that I'm being more observant.
Sometimes I have a bad tendency to look at something and be as it will be. Okay, it'll be okay because sometimes or usually this wasn't right, so I have to look at the paint and look at the primer because what we had before, before we did this off-camera step of sanding this completely and then applying it. it's a lot lighter it makes a big difference okay I honestly feel like we're not going to have any problems here look at this this is good this will also remove the dirt so any last minute dirt that's fallen in here come on. to take it out and give it a nice last coat and if there's something on that face, when we go to clean it you'll see it, but we can polish it and it'll be fine.
I like this, I walk through the door like I said, it's good here and I think I know why I have a lot of fish eyes now. I'm not saying it wasn't the air compressor system because I think it was, but If I had applied it drier this paint would be a little drier because I'm used to applying it very wet in a real paint booth and it dries faster , so I feel like I could have eliminated some of those fish eyes because on the top surfaces Put it a lot wetter than on the side, but uh, the little one there, we should be fine here.
I think we're good, we'll apply one more last coat and then we'll wait a while and then we'll clean this thing off. I feel good, I feel great and if you're wondering how we can clean it again, we just take a new rag, put a little bit of that spray glass cleaner and run it over the panel and that takes all the residue off, you could use a rag adhesive, but I like to save the adhesive cloth for when you're just going over it right before the paint keeps it cleaner, pick up most of it with this and that's how we do it.
We're looking for guys, we've waited a long time, we gave it 45 minutes, okay. I did the entire paint job last time in 45 minutes and I can tell the difference. I can see how soft it is. I can say this is it. The result will be much better, but I'm not going to get completely excited yet. I need to wait a bit, but I'm going to change things up a bit with clarity. I'm going to make some modifications. the way I apply the clear coat to try to make sure we don't have fish eyes and I also just got something from Amazon that I was waiting for.
I'm happy I came for the clear coat and for our sagola that came out with its own disposable cup system and this is it, it's really cool. We'll use it here on the Corvette when we go to clean to make it look like it has that hard glass. There and then a collar similar to the original PPS uh 1.0 and then it will come with these little caps if you want to save or save your paint and then they also sent me the um and there it is loaded soola here we go. let's get in the booth and let's get that first special jack that I'm going to tell you about now, so I've got my tack rack, you see how clean it is and I'm just going over the surface and this is going to be picked up.
Pick up any residue that may be on the surface or any minor overspray, so it's still pretty clean here at the moment. Whatever is clear we will have to polish it and we hope we don't have a bigger disaster like the one we had. we did it in the first episode, we achieved this a little bit once here, now the first layer that I put on is going to be different because I'm not going to get completely wet because sometimes when we get completely wet, that's what sometimes they do fish eyes Something similar can happen to the base, so I'm going to put a very dry coat on it.
I'm not even going to consider this a cape. We are going to put two coats on it. This won't even be considered a layer. because you don't have enough Mills in case there is some kind of contamination on the surface, maybe it's just in the car. I don't know, we look good so far, let's not ruin this and let's go ahead and put that on you. I'll see how dry it is when it's done and it will be a much quicker coat than a normal, uh traditional coat, and another good thing that just arrived is the cartridges and the lens replacement.
I just changed the old one for my 3M Mask now, a lot of you have been picking on me and you are absolutely right. I need to protect myself. I'm working on getting fresh air or 3M Versa Flow, one of those types, but for now this is definitely it. I'm going to help here because the air movement is not as efficient as it would be in a paint booth. Now let me show you that first coat and while I was changing the mascara there, I had a good 10 minutes and look how dry this is this is on purpose there's no shine but I'm creating a barrier between the base and the clear.
I'm being very proactive just in case and I'm honestly really scared, that's the truth, I don't want to do this. part again but look guys I don't see any fisheye this area is a little bit brighter than the dry area here and this is the really bad spot but I see little bumps here and there because of the dry dew maybe a Piece of land. here and there, but I don't see, I don't see an army of fish eyes and I'm happy, but I'm going to wait and give another 10 minutes, 20 minutes total, to this very light clear coat and then I'll start with my first real coat. of clear, a little bit thicker and a little bit brighter, and then we'll see what we're dealing with, but I like that coat, very nice guys.
I'll show you here in For a moment, what I love about this is that there's no overspray, it's really nice to be able to contain it, filter it, and use it up properly. Come to this side, the same situation, look how completely clear it is. I don't even smell paint, okay? It makes me happy that makes me very happy what also makes me happy is I think we're getting out of this guys I think we're getting out of this let's see it look at these guys look at these guys look at these guys we did it we did it we did it we did it we did it wow thank you thank you I feel good let's not ruin this let me give it another good 10 15 minutes let it rise and then Let's give it a second coat and then that's it, let's remove what's left it can probably be polished, no problem, wow, and I had to make sure guys.
I came back after an hour and it still looks good. We

fixed

the problem together we fixed the problem look at the Finish guys, this is smooth, there's a couple, let's say, one or two spikes here and there, some along the top, tiny, tiny, no different than which I do in a paint booth at work, so anyone who was blaming the booth, it's not the booth, this thing looks good, check it out, check it out, remember all the fish eyes here from the first episode when we went to paint it , they are no longer, they are no longer, this is clean.
Smoking clean, look at this super clean. I don't even know if I'll run a buffer over it, maybe when we're done with the project we'll figure out what we want to do, but guys, there were fish eyes everywhere. riddled with fish eyes, look at that now, I can't say definitively what it was, but what I can say is that the air system for the most part was the biggest factor. I'm sorry about the way I was spraying too wet and not allowing enough time to dry was a big factor too, but I feel like there was some kind of contamination on the line and I mean, that's what it came down to a lot of people would say Brian , why not just use a fishy lemonade and you know? that would be it that's not the answer that's a band aid you know, do you ever try to fix a panel that's been painted with Fishey Eliminator all it is is armor thrown on your clear coat and it just turns into fish eyes because that's all Same thing, it doesn't solve a problem, but we solved the problem together and here she is guys, after everything was masked and guess what is in our garage without the paint booth, now the paint booth, we have some unconventional ways to recover it. wrapped after deflating it and let me tell you thatDeflating one of these paint booths is my least favorite thing to do, you'll never be able to put it back in the box, but you might be able to make it small enough that you can put it back in the car, so just in case If you are ever in the middle of nowhere and need to set up a paint booth, you can always take it with you.
As far as the vehicle goes, it turned out really well. really nice you'll just have little dust tips here and there which are completely easy to polish now in full disclosure when I pulled this out earlier I noticed that the front fender was just a little bit brightened and that's because I had painted it on a different time and I added too many layers to the actual fender, so what I had ready, I ended up removing it. I based it black right in this area and then I went ahead with my four coats of base coat or b621 p and that was the same technique that I had used on the same pattern that I used on the door and the rest of the side panel here and then I used it to mix BL and that's why we have a much better mix right now than before, so obviously you have to keep in mind when doing these things to keep the same. consistent pattern because if you don't use these colors they will lighten or stay dark as it originally had a black face.
Now where did our problems come from? Are they coming from the air system? Do they come from the spring? stand, who knows, it could have come from anywhere to be honest with you and well that's the good thing about it because you guys helped me with all the problems I had and look at the results thanks to you, this is why We have such good results now when it comes to the rest of the project. We still have our fourth part and our door left and we have our top piece. Now we want to at some point integrate our turbine system into the mix of this, since this.
It's a do-it-yourself project; we want to explore all the different ways to spray and prep a car, but as far as this video goes, we solved the problem and I'm so happy that you guys came with me when solving this problem because this looks good and every time I open the garage door and I look at it, man I'm happy guys, this is Brian from Paint Society, reminding you not to overthink it, it's just paint, see you around. guys in the next episode w
