2018 KTM 250 XC-W TPI Bike Build

Mar 24, 2024
Hey guys, this is Justin with Rocky Mountain and this is my

2018

KTM xew TPI

bike

, alright guys, I've had this

bike

for a few months now and I have a pretty good idea of what I like and don't like with it and In this video I want to show you some of the things I have done to improve the bike and make it more personalized for me. I hope that in this version I can give you some ideas about things you can do on your own. bike please note that the modifications and accessories I have added to this bike will be more or less the same for the 250-300 KTM and Husky carbureted models, now this is a

2018

transfer port injection, it is the first year that KTM came out with fuel injection for a two-stroke engine, so a lot of people were a little nervous, you know, about reliability and power and stuff like that, being the first year after having had this for a few months, I'm very happy with him.

I didn't have any problems, the bike runs super smooth at low levels and when you step on the gas this thing breaks down. Now there are a couple of subtle differences I noticed after getting off a 20-17 KTM two-stroke and that's what I've noticed. the cranking is a little slower on the fuel injected model, it seems to ask me to crank you know, one or two more times before it fires up, no big deal to me, another thing I've noticed is that from time to time it turns off. When cold I will start it and it will idle very low and if I try to give it some gas it will just die so I have to let it warm up for about a minute and then it revs up nicely and is ready to go.

More Interesting Facts About,

Aside from those two small minor differences, the bike doesn't break down without any problems. I've been very happy and had a lot of fun riding this thing and on a positive note, with fuel injection, I don't have to rev this thing. so I can start in the valley right in the mountains and with those elevation changes I'm not worried about the jet, this always works fine and that was a negative side of my 2017 carbureted version if I went too high in the mountains that thing didn't work well not at all so it's definitely a plus with fuel injection so let's move on to the

build

now again this is a KTM xew so KTM intends this to be written on tight technical enduro trails. mountain writing so the suspension on this thing is very soft and even in my size the stock suspension is soft especially on the forks so if you're going to do desert racing you probably want an XC but if you have an It's made a big difference, the bike feels a lot more balanced that way and while we're on suspension, let's talk a little about the handling.

I've noticed that with this bike he tends to shake his head a little. High speed choppy stuff, where's my 2017 with the air fork? I didn't notice much so I went ahead and put a right engineering steering stabilizer in the front, it's pretty much the same unit that comes with the Honda CRFs, works great. and hides behind the front license plate. I like that because I didn't want a steering damper that would raise my handlebars. I really like the stock height and you know, some other little things I did with the suspension I put in. Motion Pro fork bleeders went ahead and put on some billet knobs just to make it look cool and then on the rear shock I put on the KTM neoprene bottom bearing protector.

The PDS shock is prone to water getting into that bearing and doesn't last long so I put on that neoprene protector to keep the water out mainly when you wash the bike and finally for handling I put on Bridgestone X hard terrain tires 40, the original Dunlops that came with this, I thought they were Okay, I really liked them, but I wanted to put on some hard terrain tires because as you can see, I ride on a lot of hard terrain, so these tires weren't very good. I have used them before. I really like them. Bridgestone is an excellent tire. now inside the tires I'm using Michelin big moose, they are just nice, I like the kind of killer feel they have and I don't have to worry about flat tires, such an amazing setup to have the big Michelin moose.
In there, now let's talk about protection. Any bike you buy if you're going to ride off-road will probably need a little more protection, so the first thing I always add is better hand guards. I put the Tusk D flex. professional hand guards here I like them because they offer great protection and are very durable. Next up of course is a skid plate that I put on the B saddle skid plate and I also put the B saddle chain on. The guide on the back looks great and works great and then your frame guards the guards frame are good because they actually offer a little more grip to your boot when you're trying to hold on to the bike and lastly I put on the Tusk disc guard not only looks good but it also prevents you from bending the rotor when I drive through rocky, twisted terrain, moving toward the engine.
I put an FMF pipe and a silencer on it, now for the pipe I chose the fantastic Emoto. On this bike it feels great from the bottom to the top, the transition is smooth and the power feels good. I like that pipe and on the silencer I chose the FM FS 2.1 turbine core. I really like this exhaust because not only does it make the bike nice and quiet, but it also stops sparks for me, which is really important for the areas I ride through now. Something interesting with the new KTM and Husky 250 and 300 is that they have an adjustable ignition curve, there are two different settings you can select and one setting is just open, normal, let the bike rip and the other is made more for technical writing , if you find yourself in slippery conditions or you know a more technical condition, adjust it a little bit to make Now it's smoother on the Husky version, you'll have a switch right on the handlebar so you can select between those two ignition curves on this KTM.
The only way to select between those two is to pull the gas tank and plug it in. Unplug a connector underneath to go between the two which is a little silly so I went ahead and put the husky on this bike and it's easy to stop, installs directly into the front brake master cylinder and then connects to the right. on the bike so now you can adjust those ignition curves right on your handlebars and finally with the motor I put the CX automatic clutch on the Rekluse spoke. I used to think people who used automatic clutches were just lazy, but they are an amazing recluse who have done such a good job improving their design over the years, they work so well I can still use the clutch lever of the bike to get over logs, ledges and different things, so most of the time I don't even realize the automatic clutch is there, but when I get into really technical or unpleasant situations it's like cheating, it helps you Getting over those gnarly things a lot easier and it saves a lot of energy doing it, so I'm really happy with the Rekluse clutch right now getting to the fun stuff.
I put on a set of fang impact wheels, these things are tough and look good and to match the wheels I put on a new set of primary drive sprockets and a gold Xtreme chain. I also put on some fang typhoon rotors and the nice thing about the front typhoon rotor for these KTM Tusk deposit. These things are good because KTMs tend to run hot. your rear brakes, this allows you to keep more fluid in the brake and trap a little more air to keep you cool now in the summer. I like to drive at night a lot and I actually took the original headlight off this thing for a while.
A couple of reasons, number one, the normal license plate allowed me to put the correct engineering stabilizer behind it that wouldn't fit the headlight and the original headlight is worthless, it's not as bright, it's not as fun to drive with, so in Instead I'm running the Baja design squadron pro light. I can put it on and off my handguard when I need to and this thing is brilliant, it really lights up the trail. I love riding these and to add a little better control I put on the Tusk footpegs. the brake pedal and the folding shifter and finally to make this bike my own I put an attack graphic seat cover on it, not only does it look good but I think the grip is perfect on these things.
I also went ahead and put in a new plastic kit from a B saddle, my stock took a hit over the last few months so new plastic kit and to go with those new attack graphics too and finally to finish the bike I added a little bling here and there just to make the bike a little prettier guys that's it for my 2018 KTM 250 TPI xcw bike
