Paver Driveway Over Concrete? How to lay Pavers like a PRO!

Mar 28, 2024
look hi david o'dell here with odell full

concrete

this is the fourth part of a four or five part series and the fifth part will be the installation of the grass in the backyard this fourth part is the

driveway

and it will be

paver

s so that Throughout this video we have a retaining wall, a stacked stone retaining wall in the backyard, we have

paver

s in the backyard and we have some subsoil, we have some drainage, we have a demonstration in this particular video , we already did the demonstration, so now it's just about putting the base here and this particular base is crushed recycled

concrete

, so we have about four to five inches of that base material here and then we compact it, we leave it very wet, there's a little bit of leftover base there.

So we'll go back to the recycling center, so the trick to compaction is proper humidity. The correct level of moisture in the material will be the key to obtaining optimal compaction, but it is probably better to overwet than not to wet enough because it will inevitably dry out and be rock hard now if it is dry and your compact will simply stay dry, not It's going to actually compress because what the water does is act as a lubricant to seed all those nooks and crannies and slide all those particles around and intricately binds them together really tight, that's it, it's just a lubricant, what it's doing with that pipe. three quarter inch steel is to set the elevation, the chord line is at the top of the

pavers

, that pipe is at the bottom of the

pavers

minus one inch of sand because after this compaction of the road base we're going to do another layer of sand and the more uniform this base is, this is really the most crucial step in making pavers is making the base consistent because all you want is an inch of sand now, if that sand varies in depth , you're going to have settling issues, so you really want to fine tune the base, which is the key ingredient here, so let's say you have your base perfect, you know, because that's where we are. try to achieve here is perfection in the elevation of your base, so what you do you can throw away all your levels, all your straight edges, just throw in an inch of sand and start setting them up and it should work fine, let's move on to the front now level the

driveway

, we're just going to explain to you real quick how we set up the levels and how we square up this house in the front.

More or less what we did was square ourselves by living up to our role. uh length eight inches from the foundation from here to here that's eight inches eight inches from here here pulled a rope with a stake way down do the same thing right there and then oh my gosh there it goes now I have to set up That copy security, damn, anyway, I was going to show you how perfectly square we had everything set up with this because we double checked our square right here and I can't show you right now, so let me set this up and show you.

Guys okay the screen lines are set up again so I just want to show you real quick how perfectly square we are oh you got it okay hold that side for me so here's our square wall hold one, can you be careful? I just want to show all you youtube fans how we get everything perfect or perfect enough to make it close enough, make that nice square thing that makes sure we're perfectly straight with the house, which is pretty much our straight line to go off of. once you start building all the pavers. Okay this is the next pass on the compactor make sure it's nice and tight basically at the base it's essential as I was saying before that's the only thing that will support these pavers and it doesn't really have any structural aspect it's just very difficult .

Soil now that the foundation is right on the money you can see the three quarter inch steel tubes laid on top of that foundation giving you about the one inch sand lift that you want, you want it as evenly as possible and still maintains its elevations. so you already set it by putting your sink at the right level, so this should be a really simple process at this point, so the rope lines that you won't really need at this point are just there because they don't want to move them so that They can start their first course because right after the sand you can start dropping the pavers.
The nice thing about pavers is it's a really good DIY project, especially something this size because you can set up, you know, 5, 10, 15 pavers at a time, walk away, come back. set some more between doing whatever you're doing, it's not a big deal, but as far as you know, doing a certain job you have to do it, um, once you start, you can't stop until it's done, that's its nature, this is just some wash off the mason sand that we're using here, so if you have a little bit of sand left over and then maybe you have to do a block wall with mortar, you could pour some cement on it and then you're good to go, so here is this Ashler Pattern Five different sizes of stone involved here and each one is a different color.
Okay, so we have the cobblestones here. We have the driveway all level. Now we are going to start laying the pavers. It is a completely random five-piece tip color. ashlar slate will look good when it's all done oh, you'll see Avery, you've probably seen him on some of the jobs, this problem, this turned out to be the last job he worked on, he actually started, he wanted to do a few more. money so he ended up working for my son and then the hours were too long so he ended up saying no this is not going to work because he was traveling from Victorville to here so he runs into traffic in the morning because Victor Victorville a Usually it's about a 40 minute drive here, 45 without traffic, but at those times of day, because a lot of people are traveling, you know, because it costs a lot less money to live at that address, but most of the work is done in this direction, so that's why you commute to work, you get those traffic jams that you notice when they lay these pavers, they're using a rubber mallet that way they don't break any of the pavers and they're also working from the side. top of the pavers because the sand is already placed on the money so you should be able to drop them there without having to think about it or level them or use a ruler once you get the first line you just start hitting them together.
If they fit, if they fit right, then you know you're going to stay straight, so they're just going to get this pattern as close to the sidewalk as possible and then everything else is going to be cut to size, so here. is how far we got with the design of the pavers, we pretty much have the driveway ready, of course there will be a lot of cuts, so these will be the cuts that will take even longer than the design, to be honest, oh yeah, it looks pretty good. Do you think I'm digging it? A five-piece amplifier or board is really nice.
I'm using the concrete for stamps. Okay, check this out guys, this is a great little tip and trick for you if you're struggling with making radios. pavers so what we did was we put a paver there and we figured out where we want our radius and from that point all we're going to do is lock your tape measure on that stake and we have a guy holding the tape measure. and mark everything and as long as he stays still you can also do this with the rope but it's easier with the tape measure because you can see exactly how many feet and inches you're holding it so you can be pretty precise and then he's just going to drag tape and pencil across the pavers getting exactly the perfect mark we need until it's straight here as you can see we've already done this somewhere out there it clears up and what I want pretty much how am I going to make sure This is going to be straight over here is I'm going to measure the house and make sure this line is about the same once I know it's about the same I'm just We're going to mark the next place right over here and we're going to draw a line right here and then we're going to cut it. , this is how you get a practically perfect radius.
Okay, so we're marking the driveway so that we can get perfect edges on what What we're using here is uh uh using red chalk lines that mark uh eight and a quarter centimeters so that our borders get the bearing of our soldier on what what uh john our avery did here is he made this sweet little invention so that we don't spray too much on the clear marking layer that holds our lines so that when the water hits these lines they don't disappear. This is a beautiful little invention right here, so that's what we're going to do for everything we mark just using that little piece. of paper that we opened to mark all of our lines so that they have the water attachment attached to the cutting saw, which makes it much easier than a pump-up sprayer.
Now it's a one-person operation. on that radius with that saw it's a little more challenging for sure because it's a 12 inch blade, I know it's a 14, yes it's a 14 diameter blade so it's hard to cut a tight radius with such a blade. big once they cut the entire perimeter. For that soldier course that's going to go around, they're going to remove all the loose stuff and then they're going to be able to place that edge nice and neat, so that on the edge of most of this particular driveway you won't need to block it off by putting them on. wet into concrete because they are already attached with an existing card of concrete on both sides, so once you put it in there nice and tight, it's not going anywhere, so you'll be left with a nice clean cut. the path is now just a matter of placing those rows of soldiers and they are all the same size, the lengths are like four by eight inches, a mini mallet drops them so they are flush with the pavers and surrounding concrete, so when They get to these corners, they're going to make a 45 degree cut on the corner of the existing pillar where the pillar sticks out, so you have to spend a little more time on them, so when you're going around, if you notice this, the existing concrete. near the street there's a radius because they're all four by eights, luckily it's not a really hard run, it's probably like a guy with a 100 foot radius, something like that, it's nice, it's pretty smooth, so these will fit in there , but if it was something a little more severe like below, like let's say 15 feet, you would have to circular shape each of those four by eights to make them fit together well now if you had grout between them if it was just the typical brick you could make up the difference with grout, but since there isn't any and they're going to be a tight fit, then you know you have to make sure that the stones start to touch each other, dry and lay the pavers so that they fit correctly and then you removed them, put them in position , then they dug, took out the sand, put some concrete in there, now they're wet, laying them down, so that's what's going to keep those that are there from slipping off of everyone because if their perimeter starts to slide, then all that field of paper is going to start opening up there's that cake shaped paver right there that's where the radius was adjusted a little they made up the difference with just one cut oh no there's another cut there it looks like every third brick they made a cake Shake the cut to keep the pavers tight.
It turned out really nice, it's a real improvement on what it was before and you can see what it looked like before if you go to part one because this is part four of a six part series. really because we have the fifth part will be the grass, the sixth part is the illuma wood patio cover but this is where we are now anyway thanks for watching and make sure you like share and subscribe hit the notification button that way. You will receive a notification as soon as the next part is released. Have a good day.
