I want to delve a little into the history of the Boxster for those who don't As you

know

, the Boxster first debuted in 1993 and was a game-changer for Porsche. Porsche was in bad shape financially and they really

need

ed a new entry level car to boost their brand so to speak, they launched the new Boxster 986. in 1993 and it actually debuted here in the US as a 1997 model which the The car was called 986 and sold en masse. I think about 140,000 examples of the '96 were sold and Porsche knew that with the Next Generation 987 that debuted in

2005

they had to do it.

More Interesting Facts About,

porsche 987 1 boxster and cayman everything you need to know about 2005 2008 models...

True, the Porsche faithful loved this car, they love the mid-engine layout, they love the price, they love the open configuration, but they were clamoring for something and that was a coupe, so the 987 featured the first medium model with a closed roof. -In this generation the 987 arrived, so let's talk a little about that car, but let's do this, first let's talk briefly about the 986. Foreign 986 where it all began. I remember back in 2004 thinking this was kind of a Zenith point of the Boxster Porsche just couldn't do a better job. I loved this car. I loved

everything

about it and even almost 20 years later I still feel the same, but then they introduced the 987 and did what I thought. they couldn't do it, they just improved the iconic original Boxster and today I'm excited to talk to you about what those changes are, so let's start with this and in the 987 world, we actually have two options again in 1986, we simply have the convertible, the boxer, It debuted in 2005 and in 2006 we introduced the Cayman, so first let's talk a little about the Boxster.

Many people have a preference and that's the best part: you get to choose. I always tell people to go to a restaurant. I have several things on the menu so you can do whatever you like. I'll be honest, I tend to be more of a hardtop type of person and we'll get to that, but for a convertible if you own a 997, cover your ears here, the 987 is a better convertible than the pro version and I'm going to tell you Why in my opinion it is a better convertible because what I like about a convertible is at night, it is a cool night.

I rolled up the windows. My wind deflector is on and the cabin is almost completely still in a way that it's not in a 997 because you have a much smaller cabin so these are just an amazing two lane car Back Road, take your spouse to take a fun walk. or leave a little stress, the exhaust sounds better on a Boxster, so if you love the sound of the Porsche exhaust and that flat six, I would recommend a Boxster with a Cayman with that rear hatch that muffles it slightly. In my Cayman I have to open the window a little if I want to hear the exhaust sound that comes out naturally in the Boxster.
This particular car is from 2005. This was the release year of the 987. These came in exactly two

models

. just the regular Boxster and the Boxster S and Porsche did something a little strange when they introduced it in 2006, they didn't introduce a base model, they just jumped right into the Cayman S and did something else that was a little unique. they didn't actually make these two mechanically identical and they did something strange about the price and what was good, first and foremost mechanically the Cayman S had a 3.4 liter 295 horsepower engine and the Boxster S it still had the 3.2-liter, 280-horsepower engine. people think that maybe this is how they were going to justify the price difference because historically, when you buy a Porsche, the coupe is the least expensive version, usually followed by the intermediate option, which is usually a Targa in the world of the 911 and the Cabriolet It's almost always the most expensive choice in this era, believe it or not, the 987 Boxster was less expensive than the Cayman.
I'd say maybe that's one of the reasons it didn't sell as well and if you buy a new 718 you'll notice it's exactly the other way around. A new 718 Cayman has a lower base price than the Boxster, so that's an interesting fact for you great cars. I don't, again, I don't have an opinion. You drive the car that you think speaks to you or you could do what What I do is I have a couple of boxers with factory hardtops so we'll talk a little bit about that. Now that we've talked about Boxster versus Cayman, the next big question is the base model or the S model and this is something of a mascot.
It bothers me so let's talk a little bit about this and why it's a bother because most people assume they have to have an S, they think because it has more power or bigger brakes therefore it's a quote. a better car might be or might not be so let's talk about what some of these differences are so here we just have a regular base 2005 Boxster 987. What do I like about these cars? Well, what do I like? These have the 2.7 liter engine, to me they look more like an older 911, they have a little less torque at the bottom so you really have to spin these cars, they really come to life with around four grand dollars and they love seven thousand and so on.
I'm a bit of a purist. I like old school Porsches and to me they feel light, they feel fast. They are not excessively fast. You won't lose your mind on the road with one of these. cars, so for me they are a good choice. I like the price they are because there is a lot of sentiment in the market that we

need

to have an S, a lot of times you can get a much better deal on a regular car. base model and they have proven to be a little more reliable in a couple of key areas, like hole scoring, so we can talk a little more about that, but what I would say is don't shy away from a base model.
I think there is a lot to talk about them. We'll talk about what some of those differences are visually. What a base model and an external 987 typically look like. There are a couple of freebies, the most important one tends to be the brake calipers. S models will come with red brake calipers and a regular base will come with black brake calipers. I'm sure there's someone in the eye that's going to criticize me and I'll say what if they have yellow calipers, well you could specify pccbs and we'll show you a car that has those shortly, but usually black brake calipers means a red base It usually means a couple more gauges, for example, on the Cayman in the background here, my good friend who brought me this car he's ruining. with me, he actually repainted his lower moldings, but normally those lower moldings down here would be black on a base Cayman, which would be kind of a giveaway, so to speak, and then the other giveaway, often in the rear, would be the exhaust, so if you look at a 987 and you look at the exhaust, they're just going to have a single exit exhaust tip, but again, since Porsha loves to sell you options, you're always going to find an outlier because you could go with a sport exhaust, someone I could have changed the tip, but In general, if you see the single exit exhaust like this, the black brake calipers, you will usually have a base.
This car is really bothering you because it was ordered from the factory with a deleted license plate, so you'll have to use something. Of those tools inside there will be a couple more small indications. Base models will have black gauges. They will be silver on an S model so you can see that the base model indicator is there again. I think very, very highly of base model cars, in fact this particular car is an outlier, it's a car that most people don't even

know

exists, this is a base model with a six speed manual transmission, You say, well, wait a minute, the base model is supposed to have five speeds. 98 percent of them do, but you could actually order what was called the sport package and it gave you the six speeds of the S and you passed on Porsche's active suspension management, so I very rarely see one of these cars, but here's one in person, so I was a little excited to see it, so now that we've explored the values of a base model, let's jump in and talk And, so here I have it.
I've extolled the value of a base model and I'll admit on camera that I haven't. I don't have a base model and it's not because I don't want one. I just haven't found an option like I want. If you know anything about me. I like cars a little silly or interesting, you might be able to pick which cars. in this video I own this car I love this car this car is finished in a shade called Macadamia unfortunately it's not my car it belongs to a good friend of mine he volunteered for this video but I love it but it's a great representative example. of what a Cayman S would look like, it's wearing the original 18 inch wheels, what they call Cayman S Wheels, so you can see that trim again, you'll notice the red brake calipers and if we go to the back we can see the dual outlet.
The exhaust again reads an S and this car has a badge on the back so you can see it's even labeled S, so I guess if you didn't catch those clues you could see it right there, one of the things I've forgotten. To mention about this o5, this red Boxster back here was also bothering you because it has a wheel called an 18 inch Boxster S wheel, so if you look at this car, you might assume it's an S because it has the wheels, so come closer, I'll We'll show what those wheels look like. Those would be the standard mounting wheels on a Boxster S.
There are tons of options, so your key takeaway in this discussion about the base or S you're talking about, buy the one that just strikes a chord with you and you can't go wrong. with neither of them, so now let's talk about the model year. As we know, Porsche introduced this 987 in 2005 only with the Boxster and the Boxster S. 2006 was a big year with the introduction of the Cayman S. so we'll talk a little bit about how to identify a 2006 and then we'll talk about what happens in each of the previous years. The most important thing if you remember nothing else about this discussion is that there is no bad year. for a 987, so don't think I got a shop for the right year, there are just very very subtle differences, in fact more differences delve into the fact that, believe it or not, in this day and age, the ordering guide of options for this car was It's 59 pages long, so it's very rare that you'll find two identically equipped, so this particular car is an o6, it's finished in a fabulous color.
I have something called Speed Yellow. I think it's a great color. I'm going to offend someone. but I like this color a lot better than the current racing yellow, it's a really pure yellow, there are a couple things about it that are interesting, but I will point out that 2006 is the only year that the front splitters on a Cayman S would be silver regardless of the color of the car is silver on a

cayman

of optional wheels, believe it or not, I believe there were nine possible wheel options for this car, these are commonly called The Lobster Claw, they were the standard equipment wheels for the 997 Carrera S, however just note that the Wheel fitment for Boxers and Cayman is slightly different to a Carrera, so although they look the same, the widths and offsets are slightly different, a couple more things that are fun about this car, it has the Porsche lettering on the bottom, it was not delivered that way, but a correct point was added for the car.
I kind of enjoy it, let's jump inside. I'll show you some other options on this car. It has a black interior. You'll notice that on the 987s there are a couple of different interior options. a standard interior, so they all come with standard leather, so there's a lot of confusion about there's standard leather, there's full leather, the way you can tell if you have a standard leather car is it won't have any stitching, for example, on the top of the door panel nor next to the console next to the gear shift which will not be sewn on a partially leather car, so this is standard equipment and what is leather on a car with standard equipment is really just the seating surfaces, so only the surface of the front seats are leather,

everything

else in the car is plastic or vinyl in some way, that's good, it's used very good so if you live in a warm climate, in fact in many ways I prefer a partially leather car if you have a full leather car. car, we'll show you a couple of examples of that, be very diligent about using a sunshade, they'll start to shrink and you'll start to see some leather pulled around and things like that, for usual practical reasons.
For purposes, a carpartially leather is quite useful, so this is a great example of a 2006, again the first year of the Cayman S, let's jump to the 2007 2007. I'd like to tell you that there will be some really obvious clues that you're looking for. in a 2007, but visually again almost indistinguishable from the 2006 and only some very, very, very minor changes, probably the biggest change for 2007 is simply the introduction of the base Cayman, so the base shares all its mechanicals with the Base Boxster, which is also an important note in 2007, the Boxster and Boxster S magically got the mechanical upgrades they came and got the year before, so the original 2005 and 2006 240 horsepower base Boxster jumped to 245 and The S model went from the 3.2-liter engine to 280 horsepower. to the 3.4-liter 295-horsepower engine, so again a base 245-horsepower Cayman and five-speed manual in this car in an iconic shade that we all know well protects the red, further confusing things , is an option with the 18 inch Cayman S wheels, these again would be the standard wheels on a Cayman S, but they were optional on this particular car again, you have many different wheel options in this era.
Porsche had really figured out that options are where they're going to make their money and again, that's one of the things that The funny thing about these cars is that not each and every one of them is going to be the same, in fact this car has a feature really silly that not everyone likes and that I'm a big fan of and it's the rear wiper, of course there's no rear wiper. It was once offered in a Boxster, but I think it looks super sexy, cool, very German, very functional, although I have friends of mine who would hate that car because of the windshield wipers.
I think it's great, give me a good rear wiper and a couple of other things that are worth it. mentioning this car in particular, we're going to jump in here, we're going to talk a little bit about the seating options again, this is a partially leather car in black, but it has these sport seats, so believe it or not, in the Cayman. It was Boxster, it was 987, there were quite a few seating options, your standard seat was two way power only which would look very similar to the base here, it basically only has four and back as well as a height adjustment that you rotate manually, what?
OK? would be in the base seat, the sport seat, you can see that the change in the style of the backrest is more aggressively bolstered. Some people will call them a painted hardback because they actually have a painted back, that's the standard finish you can choose from as well. that in a paint that matches the exterior color if you want, but again fully manual, you could also get the seat in the adaptive sport seat version, which would be fully electric and I'll show you that a little bit later in the car. Again, a lot of confusion, you could also get a fully electric seat only on the standard seat.
One thing that is interesting about this car, which you will notice on the base of the driver's seat, is the fire extinguisher, which was also an option on these. relatively affordable option, I think $140, relatively standard equipment in places like Europe, where they require something like that. If we walk back to the back of the car, we will notice only the exhaust tip which tells us that it is just a normal vehicle. base Cayman and you'll notice the badge on the back simply says Cayman, we're on a normal Boxster, I'd say Boxster again, absolutely fabulous cars, let's jump ahead to

2008

and see what happens, so now it's 2008, the last year of production for the 987.1 and there are a couple called general things that I want to cover and then we'll talk about some details, so first when it comes to the Cayman, when the 2006 came out there was a lot of demand because of course it was a new model that Porsche enthusiasts we have been crying out. for that car, so there was a big push, they sold a lot of 2006 models, that energy carried over to 2007 and unfortunately by 2008, sales had fallen pretty precipitously for Cayman, so you'll notice when you go out shopping there are There are many more 2006 and 2007 models on the market than 2008 models.
I'm not really sure why that is. I actually feel bad for Porsche. We all raised our hands and said Bill is a fixed hardtop car and we're going to do it. We'll buy it and make it affordable and they did that and we didn't realize that, but in 2008 a lot of changes happened, it was really like the first era where Porsha was really delving into Porsche exclusive. and being able to build cars a little more uniquely, so again as of 2006 the options list was 59 pages long, but they expanded things even further in 2008, so there's a lot more stuff available.
One of the biggest things you'll notice is that they changed the colors. The colors vary quite a bit, so one of the colors they introduced for 2008 is this color called Macadamia. I love this color. They also introduced a color called Ruby Red, which is a really nice shade, something like maybe the Arena Red of the 993 era, but slightly different. as well as one of my favorites, a color called malachite green. If you can find a 2008 malachite green, you found a winner. I think they charged 3100 extra to get that color. You will almost never find one on this particular car.
I really like how it is. The car is set up, it is said to have been ordered by a dealership manager and whoever did it did a spectacular job on this car. I want to point out a couple of things that really stand out to me: This car again has the sand beige interior as standard. It has standard sport seats, you can see them there, but if you zoom in on the carpet, one of the things I love about this car is that it has an option called biased carpets, which means that a typical sand beige car would have a tone over matching sand tone. beige rugs and this one has a brown rug that was ordered and available through special options so it really highlights this interior.
You'll also notice that the painted center console just adds a bit of visual pop to the car and again just a few options really make this course stand out. I think this core had about ten thousand dollars worth of additional options and again in 2008 what was happening is that dealers were ordering more cars because sales had dropped, truth be told, if you're really looking for a Cayman with a lot of options, you would most likely you will find a 2006 model because many of us Porsche enthusiasts have PCA guys if you ask for them, because with bated breath when they announced this car and we made a special order for 2008, the economy was starting to cool down a bit, the enthusiasm around the new model had moderated slightly and there were more, you know, standard cars ordered by dealers, so this one speaks to me, but the other thing that actually happened in 2008, Porsha likes to do something that I jokingly call the kitchen sink model, they know they have a new model coming out and a lot of faith will say well, I'm going to wait for next year's model so they come out with some special editions.
In fact, Porsche introduced five special editions for 2008 and we're going to cover what they are and again you'll see some more customized cars and I want to feature one of these cars next so I have good news and bad news for you. If you want a special edition 987, you'll have a 2008 because they built exactly five special edition models and today we'll cover two of them in depth and mention the other three because I'm talented, but I'm not that good. I've gotten all five here because they're a little hard to get, but I'm going to start with this one.
This is the most common of the listed limited edition cars. This is the Boxster rs60 yes. Truth be told, I think this is probably one of the most well-done special editions Porsche has ever made, so they built 1,960 of these cars. All come finished in metallic GT Silver. A couple of fun things have the Sport Design Aero package. You can see the front spoiler here, it's kind of distinctive, they've got 19-inch sporty wheels, they've got a black windshield frame, one of my favorite things, it's kind of subtle, but I really like it when you look back. They have a couple of things that were only available in 2008.
You'll notice the all-red taillights. They were introduced late in 2008 as an option, but came standard on these RS 60s. They have the factory Porsche sports exhaust which was not available on the 997 until 2008, the first year you could get sports exhaust was 2008 and that is a sports exhaust with valve. When I get inside, I'll show you how it works. They also have a unique chrome finish on the Boxster S badge on the back and as we look back you can't see the engine, but between the sports exhaust and a different ECU tune, this was the first Boxer to surpass 300 horsepower. of power (303 horsepower) and the RS60 edition, but it really gets really cool. it's on the interior, so again, GT Silver exterior, Carrera Red leather interior, Pro Red was a new option for 2008.
Now you can also opt for this just like you would on the 2004 S550 in Dark Gray Leatherette, but I think in this particular Carrera car. red is what you need a couple of things to make it fun again you will have a painted center console you have a kind of knurled aluminum shift knob a unique finish on the steering wheel you can see how it has a perforated part leather grips and if you look above the gauges, the first one is missing the top of the Pinnacle cover and the top of them are painted in GT silver, a pretty clean finish, they got the silver seat belts as well as the hardcovers painted in the painted seat back roll Hoops just a really stellar package almost all are very similar the only difference is you will notice this car has a black top you can also go for a red top some people like the red top I'm more of a fan from the black top, but this is just a spectacular car, it's one of my favorite special editions, so let's move on to one of the other special editions for 2008, the limited edition, so next in line for the special editions.
I should make it clear that it is actually called the limited edition Boxster, sometimes people call it orange, a little known question, a lot of people wonder what color this car is, it has a very fancy name, the marketing department spent weeks and weeks fighting over him. They couldn't come up with a name, so they just called him Orange. It's very creative. Some people call it GT3 orange, but Porsche's official color is orange. They were built in Boxster and Boxster S versions. This particular car is a Boxster S. The difference that can be seen visually is that the regular version of the Boxster will have the Boxster or Cayman S wheels in a black finish.
You can see this car has the Carrera S wheels with a black center and a machined lip. They have a sporty design front. Arrow kit, which is very good, they have black mirrors, black air intakes. I definitely wish they made the taillights red on this model, they didn't make their standard taillights, but I do want to point out the rear diffuser, which again was a part. of that sporty design package, so you can use a little spoiler at the back and down at the rear, you'll see the rear diffuser. These cars have the sport exhaust, however they did not tune the ECU, so I kept the same 295 horsepower as the regular Boxster S of that era.
A couple more things. I will note that you will notice that the rims are painted orange, which is unique to this model. Now, one thing you'll notice on this car, so I'm going to mention it because this is the only one we have like this. This car has the optional hardtop. This hardtop was an option on the 986 and 987 and everyone always asked me this question: you can't put a 986. Hardtop on a 987, however, you can put a 996 top on a 997 or a 997.2, so it's funny how very rarely you will find a super cool useful item of the 987 hardtop.
They weigh 51 pounds. Let's look at the interior of this car. They built 250 regular boxers. and 250 S in this limited edition, orange door finishers, orange dash steps around the gear lever, you'll see it's orange and also featured the GT3 Alec and Terra shift knob, although it has an orange pattern which is exclusive to this Unfortunately, the car's e-brake handle and steering wheel, however, did not get synthetic leather, so they are only partial leather. They got the Chrono sport package. A very neat car, one of my favorites. I love the color. These cars, of course, run very well. on the market because we really favor color, so the car I'm going to talk about next will be a wild color, but before I do I want to mention the other special edition models that we haven't featured.
Here, then, those are the Porsche Cayman Design Edition, a car, those cars they built, 777 of those cars, they are in black, they have turbo wheels, they have the standard Porsche active stability control equipment, they are a carelegant and the real feature of those cars is They have a unique instrument binnacle or gauges, so to speak, that were made by Porsche Design and they got a briefcase that contained a watch, a pen, a keychain, a lot of interesting things and a nice little briefcase. Those are a very, very cool car, too. Made the Boxster design edition two, those cars were in white and had a sort of gray stripe, they had sporty designed wheels like the rs60, but they were also finished in white, they had a unique gray top sport exhaust and they got the extra.
Tune the car with a rather unusual 303 horsepower engine and then the last one is the Cayman Sport, which combines a lot of these features. You can buy them in this orange again, not GT3 orange, just orange green, but again, they were the same color. as shared on the GT3, but can also be ordered in Protective Red, Speed Yellow or Arctic Silver, but is generally more desirable in Orange or Green. Those cars got the ECU tuned for sport seats with 303 horsepower sport exhaust and many other interesting finishes. of my favorite models, but let's jump to a really wild car that I want to talk about next now that we're talking about the special edition.
One of the things I have always appreciated about Porsche from day one is that they have always believed that people should be able to customize the core they have and Porsche has long offered a variety of options, which is why this is one of my go-to cars. personals.and I want to talk about this car because I love it and the good news is that you don't have to love it because it is very controversial and this is the great thing about Porsche, so this particular car has a paint finish to try. so painting a sample means that you were allowed to order in almost any color you want, unfortunately at this time they have limited the program more to what is on their available list, but this car was ordered in a color called lingrun, it is a commonly 1972 Porsche 911 color.
It's called chartreuse, it's a non-metallic shade, a super fun color, in my opinion, this particular car also features a lot of options that you would very rarely see on a Cayman and probably wouldn't see together often , so let's start with some of the more unusual ones. Also, the car has PCCB carbon brakes, which I love at least because they keep the wheels clean. You'll notice it also has the optional 19-inch turbo wheel spacers. 2008 was also the first year you could get the Aero kit from the factory. Many times people think that this is the same Aero kit that appears on the limited edition or the rs60 and that is actually not true.
It is unique and was only available in 2008, so you will get a different front spoiler and You will also get a different spoiler at the rear when I walk you through to show you that you will notice that this car has the aluminum package painted in silver. There is also an independent option on this car. You'll notice the finish on the mirrors with the aluminum, as well as the intakes, and again, Porsche just lets you do whatever you want, which is a lot of fun again. You can see the rear spoiler for the arrow kit here, even the option to have the rear badge painted in body color has the Porsche sports exhaust with the optional chrome tips where the car gets really interesting is when you go back in the interior, which we had talked about in 2008, was the first year you could get the Carrera red interior.
I'll walk over and open that door. you or you can see from there, so you'll notice that the interior is finished in Carrera red leather. My cameraman, I'll zoom in. It has adaptive sports seats. Again, these are the sports seats, but with full 18-way adjustability. When I'm there I'll just point out little things: It has full leather floor mats and interior colors to let the Porsche edges and stitching be leather. It has illuminated carbon doors. The sills can be seen, the door finishes are painted in body color, as well as the decorative strips on the edge of the dashboard, the horseshoe-shaped center console and then all kinds of other leather items, such as the frame of the PCM and all the buttons, all completely made of leather.
What really becomes controversial for most people is the selection you can make. We also have illuminated gauges on this car, they are in yellow so this car wasn't afraid to use some color so you can see we have yellow dials here as well as the soft leather and carbon fiber multifunction steering wheel which is There are so many fun options and really what stands out about this car is that Porsche allows you to build any car your little heart desires if you are willing to pay them for their options, so if you want a unique car, this is the way to do it. okay, we worry about all the options, the colors, the changes per year.
The limited editions, we're going to go under a 987 and just point out a few things if you're again looking to buy one. If you're looking to sell one or just want to know what it looks like under one of these cars again, this isn't going to be a full PPI video because we could spend hours delving into huge topics, so I'm just going to work my way back and point out a few things that when I look at one of these cars, things I'm looking for, so let's start right here, at the front of the car, these are low cars and they tend to take a lot of abuse on the front bumper cover, particularly those that have the arrow kit, so what you're going to want to look for is damage down here. 99 of these cars will be damaged underneath.
This is my car. I have a little OCD. So it's not, but it's very common that I don't worry too much about it, but you should look for broken plastics. Often you hit it so hard that you break the bottom of the bumper cover and there is no good way to repair it. That's like, if they've been running severely, you're actually going to impact the bottom of the pan here, so you want to look for damage here, so if I see some light scratches and that sort of thing, it's pretty normal if I see an impact on the pan.
I'm starting to get a little nervous other things I'm looking for uh the bottom trays and the plastics are kind of fragile a lot of times people take them in for repairs and they don't put them back in correctly, you'll see them tied up with wires or zip tied or just hanging loose , so I want to pay attention that these little plastic air guides for the brakes often get lost. These cars actually perform very well in terms of rust protection, so I don't worry too much if they have been somewhere nasty, if you will, because of the weather, we should drive these cars, however, you will see evidence that they are very well protected against rust, but you will see evidence, for example, on the nuts, bolts and fasteners, often these will show some corrosion on the surface, things like that.
They can look a little unsightly but usually don't cause too many problems. We will continue working to return. I want to make sure they haven't had any impact damage if they've spent any time on the track. you'll usually see evidence of that, you'll see, for example, rubber going up and down the Rockers or evidence that they've been hitting cones, things like that again. I encourage you to drive like this, but only if someone tells you their car has never been on the track and all the Rockers are covered in rubber. You probably know they're being a little fanciful with their story, going back to the business end.
Let's talk about a couple of hot topics with these cars, so first of all. Speaking of IMS bearings for the 987, we need to divide them into two models. Their first cars would now only be boxers and these would be the true 2005 years. They generally had a production date between late 2004 and early 2005. It still had an m96 era engine. which had a useful relationship with those cars, you can choose to replace the bearing proactively. I will not make a recommendation that is worthy of another video. You can do your own research and make a decision there, however that is a possibility strictly in early 2005.
Boxster and Boxster S in 2005 and a half or so, you can research this, you can find out when this latest and greatest bearing came out. Porsche and that bearing cannot be physically removed from the case and therefore cannot be proactively replaced without taking the engine apart properly, that wouldn't make much sense, so on those cars the only thing you can do is, if you want , you can proactively remove the grease seal. There is good evidence that that would allow us a larger lubrication jet, but the failure rate of that third generation bearing is very small, but it is not zero, so if you need to know in your heart that there is no risk of failure of the IMS, I'll tell you this: you simply cannot have a car with error m96 or m97.
I have several, I lose almost zero hours of sleep, the rate is very very small but it's always a possibility so there's my IMS pitch, do your own due diligence. The other thing that comes up that people always want to talk about now is the boredom score, okay again? I'm not going to go into depth that you can do your own research, it is a possibility in all these generations of cars, but it more commonly affects the larger displacement cars, 3.2 and 3.4 liters, more than the basic 2 liter cars. .7 liters, so if I was particularly anxious about the hole score, I would probably lean towards selecting a base model Boxster or Cayman, so those are a couple of hot topics.
The other things I'm looking for underneath here are leaks. These cars are generally not prone to leaks, so I'll be looking. evidence of leaks on this car so if I see any evidence of leaks either from the transmission which of course is in the back or from the engine itself something is wrong you just don't need to be a mechanic so if you see Yes There is evidence of a leak in this car, it is worth knowing that something is wrong. One of the other things that you can do when you inspect a car that I think is a good idea is to remove the sump plate and see if there's anything there that you don't want to see any kind of metal particles when you change the oil in these cars.
One of the things you definitely want to do is take out the cartridge style filter and open it up. and you stretch and then you get your handy little dandy like that. I have my little LED light. I take out my LED light and I'm going to scan and see if I see anything metallic in that filter, so this again. it's not a PPI video, so I'm just looking at, you know, you know the cars, a little bit, something looks out of the ordinary, it doesn't look right, you know, are the bushings broken, is there CV grease splattering because Is the CV broken? opens up things like that, um exhaust, this is a factory sport exhaust, one of the ways you can tell it's a car with a sport exhaust, if you look up, you've got some little vacuum lines that open up here, so This is what a factory sports exhaust looks like.
These are prone as they increase mileage, the catalytic converters on these cars like to go bad and what they will do is vibrate and make noise so just put that on your possible list of troublesome issues on one of these cars and again. I will also look in the back for any evidence of damage or accident repairs. Many times they will repair it, for example if there has been an impact on the rear bumper, they will fix the skin, but many times they will not fix any of the underlying insulation or backing, so if you see that it has been bumped, missing, cut or there is overspray, it is usually a good indication that the cars suffered some type of accident damage, let's move on to just one of the wheels, we will look at some.
Of the things we're going to look at here when the car is on the lift, it's a great opportunity to just take a look at the brakes again. This is a car with Porsche carbon ceramic brakes, if you can find it with Porsche carbon ceramics. brakes I highly recommend you have a professional inspection on the brake rotors if they become damaged, they are very expensive to repair for a car driven on the street, they will have almost lifelong wear, but a bad one. impact or someone dropping them, it could be very, very expensive, um, funny thing about these cars they all like to have rusty nuts.
I have no idea why they are relatively cheap and an eyesore so replace them when they rust, you will notice they also come from the factory with a wheel lock key. We're going to go over and talk about the documentation and I'll touch on how important it is to make sure you have that wheel lock key. when you turn on the tires one of the things I'm always a big fan of is checking the date code and every tire has a DOT date code so you can get up there and you can see for example with the date code in this.
The tire is and is ranked 38th in one week in 2014. So here I am defending new tires and I have eight year old tires on my car. I don't drive this car much, you can probably tell, but these are about to be delivered. For replacement, I think Michelin, as an example, says that 10 years is the maximum theyIt must be used with a tire, so please pay attention to other things. I want to pay attention when I put him on the elevator. I'll be looking down at the rocker arm for evidence of damage, these will get a lot of wear right when you put the car on the road, those are some of the things I look for, one of the things I just learned from being around cars for a long time is that most people clean a car for sale where they think it will look the way you can say a nice car is nice and clean doesn't mean perfect now this car is an anomaly You will never find another car that looks like that underneath, so it should look honestly dirty, but if it looks beat up, you know the outside looks super shiny and perfect and the rest of the car looks beat up underneath, that could be a car. than I'm going to avoid, let's jump in here.
I've put up some of the pieces of documentation that come with these cars, but let's start with the tool kit real quick, so this is in the front trunk when you open the front trunk this panel just pops out and I'm going to show you what's in here. , so we talked about the wheel lock key. Make sure you have it. Your life will be very difficult if you open the trunk or have a flat tire. somewhere and you can't remove the wheel, so it's stored right there in the front trunk. Unfortunately, these cars do not come with a spare tire.
The 986 was the last of the boxers to come with a spare tire so I jokingly say they come with an air compressor and a prayer card so if you get a flat tire we'll start praying what you'll get is this little air pump and this bottle of Goo sealant that probably has a success rate of I don't know five percent, only God knows. I've never used it, they actually have an expiration date if you look at them, they have a date that you have to replace it. I guess I'll call it AAA. We have a tow hook which is handy if I ever need to get the car out, take it out, it threads into the front bumper cover or under the rear license plate, just a small fact that the rear license plate has no cover on the back, Many people say, well, the cover is missing, they didn't come. with a rear cover I think Porsche thought it would be hidden with the license plate and then I opened the tool kit for those of us who are nerds, since the 356 generation we used to have a tool kit that was a work of art.
As cool as it doesn't cool down at all, you basically get an open-end wrench, a reversible screwdriver and this tool is the one used to remove the headlight. They are actually a fun car. If you ever need to replace your headlight, this is the tool. in your front trunk that does that so this is what comes in the front let's move on to other accessories this would be what came in your glove box this would be your owner's manual and all the guides and they come on this handy little vinyl . bag, so that's what comes on the front, it should come with a maintenance booklet in an ideal world that would be stamped by the dealer, although it is rarely sealed.
This is an example of what the Windows sticker looks like in this era, so this is, for example, this one. rs60 that we showed earlier, you can see with the options again, window sticker certificate of authenticity, this one is delicate, they don't offer it anymore so it's older, but when you can get one it will show you the options on the car and engine type now Porsche has a different offer which is probably subject to another video. A couple more things. I'm a big fan of making sure we have original materials. So how do we know this information?
So, you've seen this video and you have a question, you can certainly watch the video again, but I've forgotten a lot more than I've talked about. I'm a big fan of going back to the source material, so a couple of things I'm a big fan of are called order. The guides were published by Porsche back in the day and this is the year 2006 and you can actually look at it and it will show you all the possible combinations, all the possible options, so for example if you want to encourage air vents and leather for 390 , you can have and you can see that this option list was 58 pages long, so there's quite a bit of information in there, as well as the vintage brochures that you can usually find online if you're a nerd and interested like me.
I kind of enjoy them and again I'll provide definitive information, for example here's the OA and it shows the limited edition car we featured a little earlier so that's just some of the information. One of the other things you want to make sure of when purchasing one is you. get two keys, so you should have two keys like that, they are expensive and can only be programmed through Porsche or one of the few stores that have the correct tool to code new keys, so when you buy one, save yourself some. headache and making sure I get two keys, it's been a lot of fun talking about the 987.
If you remember, we started this video talking about the 986 case twist and how it paved the way for the 987, so I want to touch on very quickly on the 987.2, which would be the second generation 987 that debuted in 2009 and lasted until 2012. We talked about how a lot of the 97 products are basically everything that was good about a 97.1 and a lot of it carries over to point two as well. A lot of people really like point two because we got some improvements. We have a new generation of engines called 9a1 that do not have IMS bearing, so if you are very concerned about IMS bearing failure, that would be a good car to consider.
I also introduced the pdk transmission, in fact we didn't really touch that in this video, we didn't touch the Tiptronic because I didn't have a Tiptronic to talk to that, if you need a two pedal driving experience, the Tiptronic is a very robust transmission, it's reliable, effective, drives well, however if I wanted two pedals I would probably prefer a 987.2 with pdk because it is a big step up, while the rest of the improvements in point 2 are a slight step up. forward, but not a radical step forward like the transmission. I personally prefer the aesthetics of the first generation car, but that is very preferential.
What I encourage you to do if you are buying one is buy the best one you can find and buy. the one speaking to you, you can see, we went through so many possibilities here today, so many different colors, so many different configurations. I guarantee there's one for you and again I appreciate seeing, let's go out and drive these cars overseas.
