The Legendary Harry Tow Road Trip! | Roadkill | MotorTrend

Apr 06, 2024
So far this thing is pretty good, a tow truck, yeah, so Harry turns out to be pretty good, it runs and drives fine, but the front tires are bald, so let's go get some new ones. It's not just a tow truck, it's a wrecker. as they used to call them and we'll bring it back, Harry here is a 1971 Ford F-350 Crew Cab. Now the special thing about this is that in '71 they didn't make an F-350 4x4, but this old Harry converted the This truck came with a FE engine but also stabbed a big block 460. The truck is also a four speed.

It has a separate 205 transfer case. He built all this towing equipment in the back that weighs millions of pounds and has the interior too. we just hosed it down with all the cool old stuff and just a little bit of wet dog smell, bought a tow truck and did the responsible thing, went straight to the tire store where they put the wrong tires on the front of this thing , so We're waiting for more tires and as you can see it's getting dark so we probably won't go out tonight. I think what we'll do is wait until tomorrow when the snow storm hits because it's going to be amazing.

I knew this was going to happen, okay, try it now, yes, Peter, yes. Ready. I had never driven a tow truck in the snow before until now. Okay, oh, we're good. I think we can do it, oh yeah. Do it, ready, play it, oh. yeah lol that was pretty good oh yeah good entertainment we got the right vehicle for this

trip

we survived in the snow so far but there is no windshield wiper on the driver's side or there is one but it moves and does absolutely nothing and there is no heat When entering the engine because it's really cold outside, it's like 20 degrees, so we got some cardboard that we're going to put in front to try to generate some heat so we can get some temperature in the cabin right now, the radiator because the freezing air hits it keeping all the engine coolant; the water pump circulates it through the engine, frozen, so the engine doesn't really heat up, which means the heater core doesn't heat up, so the defroster doesn't work, no heat comes out, so What we are going to do is block the cold air radiator so that the coolant warms up.

The engine will heat up. Everything gets hot. We stay warm. Do it well. You won't even need zip ties. No. I did it right there, come on, hey, you might have to close the chokes. Oh wow, there's antifreeze all over the air filter cover, which might explain what we smelled last night. Flex, okay, maybe it's too closed. Try that's what it's called. a manual choke yeah just when I thought this was out of my life it came back it doesn't look any different nothing has changed. I want to know if it is still leaking from the gas tank in the bed, yes this may not be working, fall in one piece. except for the fuel system, oh we have nothing, there is no bottle up here, so I have to reveal to you what the real problem was with this truck.
Remember we're on the way back home, we've got the generator on and everything, yeah. Remember it's like steam coming out of the head and valve cover and we can't figure out what's going on, yeah, huge crankcase, huge crankshaft all over the place, this right here is basically crankcase pressure, it's not overheating, yes, it's not overheating, it's oil coming out of the valve cover, yes. apparently the exhaust pipe was completely bent, oh that's where it had like the muffler here and it was just bent in half. I saw pictures of it, oh yeah, how come we never saw the exhaust?
I never noticed the exhaust system on this thing, okay? uh we'll probably tow it, so the truth is we could probably run Pig Pen if we were stranded somewhere and really cared, but Finnegan is really excited to try out the tow truck and I can't really blame him, so we're. I'm just going to hitch that thing up and tow it out of here instead of driving it a little disappointed, but we can make it happen at home, but no one, two, three, okay, let's go ahead and just haul it back with that other truck that's sitting .
Here it is official, we have a towing company, now look how professional we are, this is totally safe, what we are doing right now, okay, let's get it down now, okay, lowering, that's great, this is the part where he explained how to do it. do it right, but i gotta be honest, i almost forgot what he said, the chain is what will take most of the weight and this is just some kind of safety, this needs to go lower and slide under the truck, that was scary right Uh oh? That doesn't look good, does it? No, not even a bit, uh, it could be worse.
See that crack in the weld and it's broken all over and this is attaching one side of the tow bar to the truck holding this. After crashing into it and stabilizing it from left to right, the other side is just as bad: the original bracket is already broken and there is another one that is bolted on, so if we try to drive down the

road

at any kind of speed, this is probably going to happen. is falling, where do you go to get to the 220 welder that will burn off the broken quarter inch plate? We have a tow truck that doesn't tow.
We decided to fix it by buying a soldering iron. We bought an awesome Miller 211 welder that I'll weld on 110 or 220 but that's the wrong adapter it won't fit the 220 outlet in this house and the way we're going to accomplish this is we're going to use a propane torch to heat that metal before of solder it and that will allow us to get good penetration running this in 110 mode, so we will make this work no matter what, thanks foreigner, it seems safe enough to take a walk right now, I'm asleep, it's the next day. whatever day it is and since you last saw me I got about three hours of sleep and I'm ready to plug this in and hit the

road

ready at least it's dry cold okay come on baby come on we're up , stop, that seems pretty solid.
Yes, the chain touches the bumper on both sides. Well, I think you're supposed to have two chains. I think the only thing that's really questionable at this point is whether audiences are still watching this. Oh, they want to see who if we kill someone. Yeah that's true yeah it's solid dude let's try it try it around the block yeah the post is like it's on the trailer it's like backing up a trailer. Well, it was a GMC 50 truck following us and it went through the fence, okay? I'm going to go see him. The victory is still there.
It is impeccable. Okay, does this mean we can apply for our business license now? Sure, I think we're qualified. It was easy. Yes, we will get insurance like that.
