How to Eliminate Orange Peel INSTANTLY!

Apr 06, 2024
Welcome back to another episode of Paint Society. In this episode, I'm going to show you the simplest paint gun adjustment to establish a beautiful clear coat finish and thank you for joining me in this video. In this video we are going to talk. about how we're going to take this new Fender and turn it into a beautiful flat finish and this Fender here belongs to an Acura RDX, it's going to be completely painted and we're going to match a door and the hood as well and The finish on this particular fender has to be very flat because the particular car in this case has a very flat OEM finish and we're going to show you how to do an adjustment with the air and the fan so you can get a very easy finish. to spray a clear coat finish, but before we can put that beautiful finish on, we have to have a beautiful substrate and it starts with the sealer.

This is a white sealer, basically, it's a diluted primer that doesn't sand and know that doesn't mean you can take your primer and dilute it. You will need to check the technical data sheets to see if your primer can be prepared and mixed with a sealer. For this we are using a 3M gun. I'm using a 1.2 but this is a thinner sealer, you can look at the Techno data sheets and you can probably use a 1.2 1 0.3 or even a 1.4. This gun sprays around 20 psi and a 3M gun and we're going to apply a good coat. We keep a 75 to 80 percent overlap and cover absolutely well using the 1.2 which will help the sealer dry well a little faster so we can move on to the base and clear coat much sooner.

Also, don't forget the edges, very important. when a door opens it doesn't look black and of course inside the defender all you need is a cape and it's pretty much completely covered now it's protected and it's ready for your base coat once it flashes and if you want that clear coat finish to make it flat and smooth, you have to be patient. You can see this is about five minutes later and it's still not fully flashed. See how it's still a little bright here? But if we move the camera in some of the other areas, a little more boring, oh, we want everything to look similar to this, so let's be a little more patient, let's do something else in the store and let it flash a little more and here we can see that it is now completely flashed.

It's not shiny or anything at this point, if it has dirt or dust on it, this has been a good time to sand it lightly. You can use a 600 grit if necessary. Let's move forward and move forward with our base. scope I just saw us apply that first coat of base coat well shortly after we applied two now actually since we used that sealer our base coated very well and a lot of guys in the production shops will use those sealers but at home no Not really It is necessary to use them because sometimes it can increase the dirt that will be left on the actual panel, so you can always lightly sand the base coat if you have more dirt.

Now at this point, we are going to apply two coats of pearl. I'm just going to show you the trick that you don't need to use yet because the trick with the clear coat is really going to atomize the finish and we don't want to do that too. a lot with our base or our Pearl because it can really distort what we're trying to do with our color and especially in silver or any metal, let's go ahead and put a quick one in here and then we'll do another layer. Off camera, we gave our Pearl two coats, it's all dry and now we're going to talk about that little paint gun adjustment that will make all the difference now, if you're a beginner or even a veteran, be careful with this because it can get you into trouble. problems, you know those flat finishes are just one pass away from a run, so the first thing you're going to want to do is have the gun set up here wide open to do it, remember. remove that liquid almost to the point where it almost comes out, but don't let it come out okay, keep it upside down so the paint doesn't come out or we can do it without the paint and then we're going to adjust it until it stops because we're keeping pressed the trigger here, okay, so it stopped, that means now, at this point, the liquid is maximized, it's fully open, our fan is where the trick is, okay?
So first I'll show you what the fan looks like without unique gun adjustments. Now this is a W 400, it's the same for the lph 400, it's the same for any gun, but the fact is this will really show it a lot. Better now you can see how wide that fan is, that's good for your base because you know, our pearls really is a good fan, but in transparent layers sometimes we need to narrow it, but how much do we narrow it? Well, here's a little trick I want to show you, so first we want to find our pressure.
Whatever pressure you're going to set, let's say around 20 psi, you're going to keep it halfway and you're going to see how there's no paint coming out, but there's just air and this is what you really want to look at, so let's start looking at that gauge and we're going to dial the fan right here and as soon as that indicator moves Just one touch, that's when Find our fan okay, so I'm moving it slowly, move it slowly, focus on that and when it goes up a little bit, I'm still moving it, keep going moving it around and you'll see that it moved up right there, ever so slightly. it went up about a pound, okay, it was at or around 20 psi, now look at our fan, take a look, see how it goes down so dramatically?
Now, by doing this, we've removed all the dryness from the ends of the fan and reduced it, so now we're really going to have a nice atomization in this area here, which means that now we have to move a little bit faster because it will place very, very quickly. in real time our first coat is not going to be perfect, but if we take a look at it, this is freshly sprayed, there's no time for it to flow, that finish looks perfect for a beautiful OEM finish. Granite, we still have to put two coats on it, so we're going to let this dry for a good five to ten minutes and then we'll apply our second coat and I'll show you any changes we can make before we spray it, so it's been 10 minutes and You know your next question, do I have to start with that 221 PSI pressure?
You start with whatever pressure you want, but if you want to change your pressure, you have to reset it, so let me show you what I mean right now, so if you want to reset your pressure. you're going to take the fan knob and you're going to open it all the way once again, so let's say you want to spray around 24 PSI, okay, so you're going to dial it in at 24 PSI, hold it down and once again. This is our new preset, so look at it and I'll mark it here and when it comes up, it's going to move a little bit right there, it moved slightly, then look at our fan, which means it's set to that ideal fan for that pressure.
That's fine, and will vary depending on the actual pressure. Okay, so if you have a higher pressure, then the fan won't be as narrow, so if you have a lower pressure, the fan might be a little narrower, so play with this. trick, we're ready to go, we're going to spray our second coat, we're going to move a little slower and really smooth things out and after 20 minutes, guys, we have a beautiful Factory style finish, a very flat

orange

peel

, finish this off . is exactly what you would get from the factory if you held this Fender up to another OEM Fender that he couldn't tell and that's exactly what we want, we don't want completely flat, completely flat means you know it's been painted and completely flat is both a clue as a bad color combination.
Now, of course, this is blending, so it's going to match 100, but you can see how well, how smooth, and how effective this paint adjustment trick really is if you guys saw it live here. It's very simple, there's not much to set up on the spray gun and you can use it for any spray gun. Remember guys, you can use this trick on any spray gun. Now I like to use Iwata because it is a good spray gun that many beginners can afford if they go for the kiwami or even the lph 400, it is not a high priced spray gun but you know the build quality is still there and if you are looking to spend Just with a little money you will get something that will really give you a great return.
Now you can use this trick on any panel and anything, but be careful, try it somewhere else first because remember that you are only one step away from running when you do it. something like this, but what it basically does to the spray gun is it takes the fan and narrows it down and gives you pretty much the flesh of the fan and nothing else, so when you put it in you know it's atomizing and it's spring. Down Smooth instead of just a bunch of tri spray and we've all been there before. I hope this trick and tweak helps you guys.
