Tyre widths, recalls & my cars - Big Car Q&A

May 02, 2024
“What

cars

have you had? And what

cars

you would like to have, past and present models.” My dad bought me a rusty Morris Marina to learn how to fix a car, and I bought it before I even knew how to drive. From that car I learned that car repair is difficult and that rust is especially horrible to deal with. And I also learned that you need to take lessons before driving a car, and that walls stop a car very quickly! The first car I had access to once I could legally drive was a 1980 Ford Fiesta 1.1L which, ironically, broke down just outside the RAC building on the M6, around junction 8.

I got so tired of waiting for a pickup truck. help from the RAC. , that I jumped over the fence and went into the lobby to ask for someone to come help me. Meanwhile, the police had found my car and were going to report it as abandoned. Every time I pass by that damn building I think about that time. After that I had a first-generation Volkswagen Golf, seen here in a terrible movie I made with some friends. It was a great car and very reliable, but it was over 10 years old when I managed to trade it in for a Ford Escort mk4.

I loved that car too, even though I managed to get it into a ditch. I moved to the United States and bought my first new car, a 1995 Honda Civic. I learned two things from that car. Firstly, it's more fun to take a slow car on the track than a fast one, because you have to be more technically perfect to catch up with other cars, and secondly, in the United States you need air conditioning, something this car didn't have! ! I traded it in for an Audi TT in 2002, with air conditioning, which was a lot of fun, but the 2011 Volkswagen Golf GTI I bought next was fun and practical.

Lastly, I bought a Tesla Model 3 in 2019 which is great fun to drive, but I'd prefer a hatchback or estate than a saloon shape, and a less boring color than grey, oh and something that could play MP3s without skipping To fight. Mrs. Big Car got a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, which was fine for hauling people and things, and my first experience with four-wheel drive. It had one of those wheels on the back that you had to take off before you could open the trunk, which was a pain. Traded in for a 2002 Volvo V70 XC; A lovely car that we took everywhere and was fantastic for taking our young children.

This was replaced by a 2008 Volvo XC90 that was equally luxurious, but I never liked the overall weight of the car. But it was a good second car. That was totaled, not by me, and we traded it in for a 2015 Honda CR-V that was more of a workhorse that the kids could use now that they could drive. Mrs. Big Car had already bought a Mini Hatch that she liked at the time, but she now prefers my Tesla. So she drives the Tesla and I'm at home making videos and I stick with the Mini, which I'm not really a fan of.
I'm not comfortable with it and it's not particularly fast. Now, what old cars would I like to have? That's an interesting question. Well, there's the Renault Twingo, of course, but I also have a real soft spot for my dad's old Audi 200 Turbo, circa 1980, which seemed so fast at the time, with brutal turbo downshifting at 3,000 revs. But if we look at the statistics, it is like that today. I think it's something like an 8 second 0-60 time, maybe a 9 second 0-60 time. I think meeting my hero would be an anticlimax. My parents also had a 1987 Volkswagen Scirocco, it's not "sirocco", it's "schirocco", and I loved driving that one too, so I'd love to put it on the list.
