Reggie Bush Gets 2005 Heisman Back, 14 Years After Having To Forfeit It | Pat McAfee Reacts

Apr 25, 2024
Reggie Bush, yes, ladies and gentlemen, it has been decided that Reggie Bush will get his well-deserved Heisman for

2005

. We are excited that this decision was made because it was made by a group of people who usually make mistakes and it's not like it was the NCAA. but it's the same style of human being that has been tough and stubborn and refuses to look at reality and the logical situation in front of them and just say this is easy, this guy was the best football player ever. he was at USC was not only musty television, but he was also a ticket draw, the prices to go see this guy live were 34 times that.

He was like Caitlyn Clark for women's basketball and college football. Reggie Bush every time you could watch a game you knew. there was a ridiculous climax coming, a shakeup was coming and there was going to be a Crossfield cut where he would run 700 yards for an 85 yard touchdown to his point each time cutting out the entire field that would be set up for massive throws, so the people exploded Matt manteca is obviously a stud too Pete Carroll was really nice to watch from the sidelines it's like this was the right move and I'm happy they made this decision but obviously they should have done this 15

years

ago when everything this was resolved and I found out what he really was, what an electrifying player, AJ, I'm serious, to be able to play against Reggie in the league, not in college, but I think I actually did.

I'm in the same draft class, same age as Reggie, pretty much yeah, like it was a special time when these guys were in college when USC was going

back

wards

back

then, I mean, that's where USFC is trying to come back, but I said every time they took the Heisman away from Reggie, well, they didn't give it to anyone else, you still won it, you still earned it, it's yours forever, but now it's nice that it's officially back in their hands, well, they tried to give it to Vince Young. supposedly and Vince Young refused to accept it because he understood that it was Reggie's Heisman and I think I graduated high school in

2005

and I was in college at the exact same time as Pat White Steve Slayton was absolutely electrifying and I want to see him but everyone he obviously had so much respect for what Reggie was doing that you immediately became a fan of all the highlights you see from him.

I'm punting to him in a Super Bowl, he's on the Saints, yeah, and I'm literally in my pants. It's like I saw this guy shake real athletes in the middle of the Super Bowl, most eyes on the story the moment I was able to throw a ball to this guy, his NFL career didn't work out. turned out to be everything everyone expected, but he literally would have had to play for 20

years

in the NFL, score 100 touchdowns every two seasons to live up to the hype and now he is the rightful owner of uh you. Get to know the Heisman Trophy about him again, so who were the ones who made this decision and how many years have we been close to this decision coming to his eyes?

And I guess everyone on Earth feels the same way we do about this. The right decision. Thank God. Moving on now, yeah the timeline is interesting Pat because 2021 was the first year of n and Reggie issued a statement on July 21st that basically said, "Hey, I'm calling the Heisman, what I did is now legal. I should to get my Heisman back." and part of the Heisman reasoning for this in 2010 was that the game statistics were invalidated and therefore the Heisman was taken away, so I think the momentum changed two years ago, as you know, nothing happens quickly in college sports.
I think Johnny Manzel's audience's plea made the difference the other day, the Heisman is an institution sensitive to criticism and when theirs came to light with such force, I think that mattered. Coy Harvey reported today that there was a group of Heisman members that were together, Tim Tio was among them there were a couple more familiar names there and they got together and as part of this decision to bring Reggie back, Reggie went into a room with about 15 Heisman members and they all greeted him in Florida at an event, so it's It's a very, very special moment for Reggie to be reintroduced to that club and now we're all anxiously awaiting the Heisman house commercials where he does The Undertaker and returns to Absolut, so many good ideas that Pete keeps presenting them publicly so that maybe Those can come to fruition, huh, I guess USC will do something big for him too, yes, I mean the president of USC issued a statement today.
Lincoln riy issued a statement. I mean, people had this is a great moment for USC, they actually have eight. Heisman now more than any other school going through Ohio State and, gosh, two other schools. I'm going to leave it blank right now, but yeah, Oklahoma was one at Notre Dame. Oklahoma Notre Dame, so now they're ahead of those three that have seven, uh yeah. Have you ever been to a Heritage Hall, it's really cool at USC, they have them all very publicly, people can come in and see them, that's a big point of pride at that school, it goes back to, you know, O.J. and Mike Garrett and all the way to Caleb Williams and Reggie Bush now, so that's a really cool kind of historic touchdown to end there and yeah, they think Lincoln Riley called it a historic day for USC, so there.
Certainly the pride emanates from there, he was banned there for a decade and he came back three, four years ago. The NCA banned him for a decade and when he returned it was a big deal. I mean, he's a transformative figure in my 21 years. In doing this, I have never covered a player who has been more electric. He had like 2,900, a little less than 2,900 yards for total yards as a junior, think about that for a minute, 2,890 yards when you count kick returns when you count from scrimmage, I think in his career. from scrimmage he averaged eight and a half yards per touch, I mean, it was dumb, it's absolutely dumb what he did on the football field at USFC, it's fun to see him keep going, AJ Pete, uh, it sounds like that from Johnny Football when he comes out and says all this stuff that Reggie needs to get him together and he's not going to show up or do whatever he's going to do really gave him the public boost he needed.
I know behind the scenes, I'm sure people were working, but who ultimately does that? decision to bring him back, so it's unprecedented, right, what happened, so it's not like they have a committee that they're going to go to, you know, that takes care of this, but what I think is that Heisman is very sensitive to bad publicity and Johnny Manzel got it. a lot of attention to what he said and I think this mitigated future we heard you say this before Pete, we heard you say this about four minutes ago yeah, we heard this whole answer yeah, no, it's not, this is, uh, it's not your fault, this is It's not your fault AJ, did you just want me to emphasize the fact that the Heisman committee hates bad publicity, so no, I'm saying they made the play like the player did or everyone who, like the former winners of Heisman, can you vote? and bring him back or form some committee or some Heisman trust committee, do it yeah, so I think they consulted with a group of Heisman winners, but again, like there's no precedent for this, so I don't think they have a subcommittee on reinstatement, you know what?
I mean this has never happened before hopefully it will never happen again amen um but yeah I love it even though this is great for college football I think as a whole and maybe like you know the decisions of common sense that people will take in the future. who have positions of power in college sports, you know, Pete, that would be cool too, like if the NCAA could look at this and say, ah, it's a new era, we don't have to suck all the time, cool, right, Pete That can't happen? Maybe by this I mean, certainly the NCA is trying to lean more towards common sense, but I'm not going to go on the P AC show and defend the NCAA in any way.
I can be very clear about this. uh at least they're trying to modernize, which they were about 40 years behind on and now they're probably 20 years behind, but you know, look, the world is very different than it was in 2021 and that's progress, but that progress. has to be seen in 2021, we have Co was terrible, yes, we had Uncle K. 2021 is when the portal essentially opened and a name, a likeness, money happened, so that transformed the landscape as we know it and, in In many ways, this is a byproduct of some of those transformational changes in the rules you're the man, ladies and gentlemen.
We appreciate that they're fighting, you know, getting ready for this big season coming up. We appreciate you ladies and gentlemen, Pete t.
