Make a "Two Step" Quilt with Jenny!

May 30, 2021
Hello everyone, I'm Jenny from MSQC. And today I have a great project for you. Let's take a look at this

quilt

behind me. Isn't it fun? I love this intense and bright color. It is so beautiful. This is an easy pattern. You will enjoy doing it. Everything comes together very quickly. I literally put this together in a day. So it's a really fun quick pattern. So what you will need to

make

this

quilt

is a roll of 2 ½ inch strips. We have used Zola by June Bee for Ink and Arrow Fabrics. You will also need 1 ¾ yards of background fabric.

Now, some of them will be cut into five inch strips where we will

make

our five inch squares and the rest will be used for this inside border here. Our inside border, is a 2 ½ inch border. Our outside border is a six inch border. And we're going to need a yard and ¾ for that outside edge. Let's look at the back. The back measures 5 ¼ yards. And that pretty print on the back. That's so nice. This is a very funny line. I don't know if you can see this, but there are like little dragon flies in here. So beautiful.

It's really a nice, nice line of fabric. Alright, let me show you how to do this because it's super easy. Then you are going to choose the background fabric. Now, if you want to use amulets, you can do so. You can use the five-inch squares, but you need 56 of them. There are 42 in a pack and you will need to buy two packs, but you won't use them all. So we opted for yards. We went for that ¾ yard. We cut them into five inch strips like this. And then we cut them into five-inch squares. Now when I cut, when I go to cut my yardage into five inch squares, what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut my strip and then I'm going to fold it in half.

And I'm going to leave my lines here. And I'm going to cut the selvage edge right here. Make sure it is lined up and straight so you know you have a good five-inch cut. And I'm going to cut my, my little fold and my edge right there. And then I'm going to flip this over for my left hand use. And I'm just going to put my five inch ruler here on the edge and then I'm just going to cut and cut. On this ruler I don't even have to look at the lines because it's only five inches wide and I know it will be that easy.

Alright, so let's take our strips. And you're going to dismantle your roll. This is a fun roll because it has so many different bright colors. And we are going to join them in groups of two. Each strip will be sewn together. He's going to have a partner and we're going to sew them together. We'll lay them right sides together and sew them a quarter inch down the side. And you're going to do this to your entire pack, okay? So we're going to come here, put the strips together, line up the quarter inch and sew. And I'm going to make some of these so I can show you how to do this because as you sew the strips together, you're actually going to need them, you're just going to cut them all up and mix them up. all upwards so that that color spreads throughout the place.
So we're just going to sew a quarter inch down the side. So once you've sewn all the strips together, you'll have like 21 sets of them. You're going to sew them all. Then we are going to iron them to open them. And we're going to come here to the iron. And I like to keep my dark piece on top here. And then I'm going to reverse this, like this. Leave it, leave it so my sewing is on the dark side. We are moving towards the dark side. Alright, here we go. And we will do it with the next one too.
Let me clarify some of this. And again I'm going to put my dark side of my strip on top. And you can see that I am a very versatile ironer. I ironed the other strip on this side and this one on that side. Really do not care. Either way it works. Alright, now that you have all your strips ironed, ready to go, again I like it, I like it. I just like to limit my cutting order and so I want to double them so I can make more cuts. And we're going to sew these strips around this pendant.
So one side of this charm is five inches, which means we're going to go ahead and cut a five-inch piece of this. I'm going to cut the selvage edge right here. And then I'm going to put my ruler here and I'm just going to cut five straight ones like this. Now you're going to do that with several of your pieces and we're going to attach this to the side of our charm. And we're going to go here and do that. So just lay it out along the edge and sew a quarter inch down the side. And then we'll come back and open it up.
Alright. Now, once you've opened the piece, what I do is measure it because not all quarter inch seams are perfect nor do they have to be. We just want it to be the same. So for me, this comes out nine inches, so I'm going to go ahead and take my other strip and cut the selvage edge again. You always want to do that. You never want to try to use that advantage. It has little white pieces and, you know, it's not pretty. So we're going to count one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. And we're going to come here and trim that.
Now I like to put two different strips around my square. So now we're going to place this one on this edge right here. And we're going to sew that to that, just two small

step

s. Alright, here we go. A quarter of an inch down the side. Alright, and that's your entire block. Let's press it open and take a look. Alright. So here's your block. We want to put it there. It looks like I have a little bit of a peak here, so I'm going to make sure to square this edge right here. You should end up with, if my calculations are correct, and they're not always correct, but you should end up with a one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine inch block.
I am pretty sure. Alright, here we go. Then this is your block. That's all. Now literally when I did this, my husband is very good at laying things out and he sees different angles and all that kind of stuff, so he's very good at it. And I said, Ron, I just want you to play with this design and see what happens. He literally presented it four or five different ways. And we just had to choose the one we liked. So let's take a look at this quilt and see what we have. So you can see this one here, the straps are at the bottom, the pendant is at the top.
Charm, charm, charm, charm, you know, that's how you're going to present it. You are going to place the first, you are going to take your rows. And I have some blocks here that are already finished. And it's going to go this way and that way and this way and that way. Here we go. And you're just going to put your rows together like this. It's so simple. Once you've sewn the rows, the next row will start just the wrong way around. Then start with the corner facing up. Then you'll just look at the design, lay them out, and then sew each row.
And then just sew the rows together. And it's going to make a 74 by 83 quilt. This is a pretty good sized quilt. We're going to put a 2 ½ inch border around the outside. Finish with a six-inch border and then send it off for quilting. And it is a very quick project. In fact, it's so fast that, with just these two sides here, I decided to call it the Two-Step Quilt. So, just like dancing, it's the Two Step Quilt. And we hope you enjoyed this MSQC tutorial.
