MCM Dresser Rescue! I SAVED This Dresser from the TRASH and made $525 Doing It!

Mar 19, 2024
Let's see what

this

one hour polish is all about Hello everyone, welcome back to the furniture flipping master. I'm Lauren and today we're going to tackle

this

dresser

I found at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore by looking through the drawers I found. It's actually a Lane company product, so Lane is a pretty well-known furniture company and they are very high quality furniture. This piece just needs a little love. It was actually marked at sixty dollars because it was a DIY

dresser

, so the price was pretty good. an amazing quality piece we need to get started, obviously whoever donated this for the restoration couldn't decide what kind of hardware they wanted so I'm not going to use any of this, I'll set it aside in my hardware stash and possibly use in a next project.

I'm also going to remove all the drawer inserts here, probably set them aside again for another project, and while I'm at it, I'll go ahead and just take them apart. the whole dresser so I can clean up here and also rearrange some of the drawers. I know from experience with tons of other furniture that the drawer with the company label on it should be in the top left drawer, so that's it. how do I know this one actually goes here, so when I'm labeling the drawers, I'm going to label this one as number one and this one as number two, sometimes the drawers get moved around, they actually go in the

trash

.

More Interesting Facts About,

mcm dresser rescue i saved this dresser from the trash and made 525 doing it...

I see some kind of animal hair on them and I just don't want to deal with cleaning them, so that's going to go there. Well, it's time to clean this baby up. I'm wearing my simple green and just a box of rags here. I'm going to spray it all down and wipe it down again because it's important to clean our pieces and clean the inside because they can also be really dirty and no one wants dirty furniture. Foreigners often ask me why I clean before sanding and then I have to clean it again and the reason is that there are a lot of unknown substances that are on the parts and if I just sanded I would be grinding all that stuff in there which would potentially make it like that . my paint wouldn't stick because it's oily and greasy so in my opinion it's best to clean first before

doing

any other steps and I don't want to work with dirty furniture anyway.

I really love the design of these three drawers. so I'm crossing my fingers that I can keep that in the final look now that everything is clean with the simple green, it leaves a little bit of a sticky residue on the surface, so I'm going to take my spray bottle of plain water and rinse everything off. The exterior prep work is done. Now you move on to the next step of preparation, which is to repair any damage that needs to be repaired to the dresser, so this dresser, as I said at the beginning, is of great quality.

However, there are a few things that need to be fixed with it and one of those things is that there are a lot of peeling or peeling veneers. I can tell this piece is solid wood by looking back at the top back and I can tell there is a layer of veneer on the top that is

made

of wood, but it is peeling in many spots and as there is many and they are quite large, I have chosen to use Bondo multi-purpose putty to fill. in those places it's a two part epoxy that's put together and when they're together it activates something in the chemical reaction action and it hardens very quickly so you want to work fast and you want to work with small batches so I'm going to pull a bit of my Bondo right on this cardboard here and then I'm going to use my cream hardener to spray a little bit in there and then I'm going to mix it in and like I said right when you start to mix it in, it starts to harden so you have to work semi-fast before it everything hardens completely, so you will have a consistent color and then you can start applying it.
You want to make sure that your veneer maybe Do you know that anything that's peeling off won't continue to peel off and then you can apply? Try to only put it where you need it because it is a bit painful to sand so don't apply too much. too much foreign Bondo, thanks, so most of the damage was done to the actual body of the dresser, so these drawers aren't too bad, all I did was fill the hardware holes because there were three, no I know that. was happening there, but that gives me the opportunity to choose my own hardware and I'm going to let this Bondo dry or harden before returning with my sander.
Okay, so my Bondo is completely hardened here, so I'm going to take my surf prep sander with the 120 grit sandpaper to sand everything nice and smooth and then I'll also sand the entire surface with the 120 grit and, thank you, foreign, the base of the dresser and the other three drawers are sanded and all that Bondo is sanded smooth for these three dressers on the left side. Sorry, these three drawers on the left side of the dresser. I really love this wood grain as I mentioned before so I'm going to try to save it but it needs to be cleaned up a little bit so I'm going to lightly sand with 180 grit and my foam abrasive pad here so I don't break any of the coating and I'm going to go very slow and take care of these nice foreign foreign drawers I'm just cleaning up the sanding dust that's left so it doesn't mess up our primer and I'm just using a microfiber cloth for this, if there's a lot of dust I like to spray it on a little bit A little bit of water just to make sure we get all that dust out of there right now, real quick.
I'm going to take my painter's tape and tape the edges of these drawers so there's no primer underneath. I am going to use Wise Owl products today and this is the first time I have tried other products. I've heard some really great things, so once I try them today I'll let you know my thoughts at the end. I went ahead and Stir everything it says, don't shake it because it will add air bubbles, you can spray this with a brush or a roller thanks, so the first coat of primer is done. I'm going to let it dry for a while. now and the can recommends two coats and I can see why because I see some bleeding already appearing sometimes, if you have that major bleeding you will have to apply several coats of primer so it's not that the primer is faulty it's just that .
The stains are very strong, so I'm hoping two coats will be enough, but if we keep seeing it appear, we'll probably have to apply a third. I'm going to sand lightly between coats of primer to smooth everything out. It's an extra step but it really helps you get a smooth finish in the end. I'm going to use my RZ mask so I don't get dust in my lungs when I sand it oh foreign foreigner, I regret that decision. To some extent, I know it's going to pay off, but I think one thing I should have done is diluted the wood filler a little.
I'm talking about the wood filler that I used, which was the wood filler that changes color and becomes natural when dry, but I've seen other creators do this where you know you apply wood filler on top and you can remove all these wood grain marks, which is what I was trying to do and I did it, but it took me a long time. To sand them and I used tons and tons of sandpaper because everything was sticking, so next time I'll thin it with water since you can see we're going to need one more coat of primer just to cover everything. wood and then we can finally paint while the third coat of primer dries.
I'm going to address these drawers right here. I sanded the finish completely and I still love the wood grain so I went ahead and was To decide if I really wanted to stain them or not what I did was I added a little bit of water to them and that will really help you know what color it will turn out your wood once you add a top coat and I loved the look. I don't want to change the color at all, what I'm going to do is just sand it one more time, very smooth, with my fine, very fine rad pad, and then take a tack cloth to remove more dust and then For the top coat, the Non-stick cloth is like a sticky cloth that will catch all the dust.
It's even better than a microfiber cloth because it has that sticky residue and then for the top coat, I'll use Lily. Moon's Stellar Shield top coat and it has a low gloss finish, which means I'll be like a little gloss, but not too much, and if you're wondering why I'm actually coating these drawers just because they're raw wood, no I have nothing on them, it's just so that later when this piece is used for whatever, if our fingers continue to touch it or something spills on the front, there will be some problem with it getting stained and it can just be cleaned right away like a painted dresser or a dresser with a finish, once the top coat dries I'll probably do another one for sure and possibly a third, so before I paint I'm going to use my hardware template to drill some new hardware holes.
I was actually looking through my hardware stash and found a few that I have enough of that will be absolutely perfect and it's exactly the look I was going for anyway. I used some of these on a previous project and this is going to be perfect so these are about six inches apart between the holes and this hardware jig is absolutely the best when it comes to drilling new holes because it helps you get a Very accurate measurement of hardware holes you can set. Place them exactly where you need them, line them up in the middle of your drawer, drill the holes and you're golden.
Sometimes I like to do this after painting but this time I decided to do it before because I really don't want to mess up the finish and sometimes that can happen when you are drilling new holes so keep that in mind, it might be a good idea to move on and drill the holes when you have the primer on before painting your actual color. So before I paint the paint color, I'm going to very quickly use my thin surf prep pad between coats to smooth everything out and then Even will help me lay it on its back so I and I can take the legs off.
I'll paint it and then when the paint is drying I'll work on those legs, so when I bought this dresser two of the little feet were missing, it's unfortunate because they are really nice pieces. I'm going to look and see if I can find you. I know maybe something like this on Amazon, but it's going to be very difficult to match that exact shape, but my backup plan is that I'm going to take the area where the leg is indented a little bit and paint it a similar gold color. to the color of the hardware so it doesn't look too funky and we still have some nice decorative feet so I like to line my roller tray with aluminum foil so when I used my primer I used this same roller tray but I only had to Remove the aluminum foil and put a new piece and everything will be ready.
I'm not going to spend a fortune getting new trays every time, but like I said at the beginning of the video, I'm giving away the only one. Wise Owl Hour Polish, I tried it at today's launch so we're all set and I chose the color Fox Trot which is kind of a grayish green color and I'm excited that this is my first time using a paint of enamel, so we're going to pour it in and start rolling, so it's important that you stir this paint to make sure that all the qualities that you know about the paint are mixed properly and you don't want to stir it because that's going to cause air bubbles in the paint and they really recommend stirring it lightly with a stir stick, it looks like everything is evenly mixed now it has a very very nice color so like I said this is my first time using enamel paint.
I know it's going to dry. very fast and has a really very strong built in top coat so no need to use a top coat but I will do two coats of enamel paint. I'm going to start with the drawers and then move on to the base of the dresser applying it very similar to how I did the primer, where I don't want to work too hard and go over the same spot too many times because then it might hinder those self-leveling qualities that I don't want. as level and smooth as possible thanks, okay, there's the first layer.
I love the color and I think with the wooden legs and the three drawers, oh my goodness, it's going to look great, so while the first coat dries, we'll move on. to the little feet Mares I'm going to use gold wax for the feet. I just decided that that will be the best, fastest way. That way I don't have to wait for any feet. I could still look further ahead if not. It doesn't sell right away, but the gold gilding wax is from Dixie Bell and is basically a wax that turns things into gold, so you could use it for hardware.
You could use it as a detail of your piece. I'll use it for this area here. and you just wipe it off or I like to use an artist brush so brush it and then let it sit for about 10 to 30 minutes and then you'll come back with a rag and buff it and then from there. There will be no residue from the gold wax because it will be completely dry on the strange hardware in these drawers and now it's time for coat number two in green, so we go back for a coat number two. Take my sandpaper between coats and just smooth it out a little bit.
I can also say that this gloss and the finish of this will be super long lasting. I scratched my fingers and absolutely nothing came off. and I think I'm really liking this enamel paint. Thank you.Okay, so I can apply the layer there. We'll let it dry and then we'll see if we need a third coat or not. Okay, the second coat is dry and after looking great in the sun. with really great lighting, I don't need a third layer, wow, I'm going to go ahead and remove this tape so we can put everything back together.
I'm going to butter the drawers with Lily Moon paints. Furniture balm with the Suite orange scent. It will also give it a bit of a fresh scent, this will really help the drawers slide in and out nicely. This part is wooden, but the rail here is metal. If they were both metal I wouldn't recommend

doing

this, but since it has a wooden look it will really help lubricate it a bit, it's beautiful. I will say that the finish is a little tacky, but technically it takes about four hours to fully cure, but after that it's hard as a rock, so I'm actually very pleased with the enamel paint.
It was very close to being absolutely level, like you couldn't even tell I used a roller. There are, as you know, some slightly orange roller bumps. peeled, but it is not something that distracts from the appearance of the piece, in any case I always feel that that texture gives it a little more durability, you know, whenever I can, I like to keep a wooden element in a piece of furniture, you know ? I don't always paint paint so the fact that I was able to save these three drawers and there was very little damage to them and all I had to do was sand them and top coat them.
I'm so glad I was able to save this really pretty design and then other than the legs they were all in perfect shape. I think hardware brings it all together. Green. I can keep saying it and I will keep saying it until it's no longer true, it's so trendy. color right now so I think this should sell pretty quickly of course we have to talk about the numbers here and I'll let you know how much I'm going to sell it for but the piece itself was 60 bucks and then the primer and The paint can cost forty dollars each, so it may seem like a lot, but remember that it is such a quality paint that you are going to pay a little more for things like this; however, I only used less than half a can. each, so we'll represent twenty dollars each, so we all make about forty dollars.
Sorry, we all

made

about a hundred dollars because I also had the hardware on hand. I think this piece is very high quality, it's solid. Wood is a trendy color. I think we're going to start around six hundred dollars for this guy. I think it's a very fair price. It took me probably eight to ten hours or so and part of that was my fault for doing it. Things a little bit that took me a little longer than usual, but I'm really excited to list this one and see how long it takes to sell well. Neiman accidentally forgot to press the record button on the camera, but we posted it. on Instagram, so if you saw it there, you saw us sell this and I also have proof that we sold the dresser for 625.
I said I was going to list it for 600, but when it was listed I said, you know what could? We always go down to 600, so why not try 625? It was worth it and that gives us a total profit of $525 for approximately eight to ten hours of work. This piece will go all the way to Ohio to be a small changing table in the nursery. a new child who will be born in August. I think it's cool that my furniture literally looks like it all over the country. We've had people from Minnesota come here, Kansas City and now Ohio and more areas as well. and we can't wait to continue blessing everyone with some amazing furniture.
Personally, I really liked that Wise Owl paint, so I will use it again in the future. Personally, I like to go to a local place that sells Wise Owl Paint, but I know there are a ton of online retailers that you can also get Wise Owl Paint from, so I'll leave a couple of links down in the description box if you want. are interested in supporting other creators I know who sell that painting, thank you. Thank you very much for looking, we will be back next week with another change of furniture and I will see you on the other side.
