Chris Paul's Handles Broken Down to a Science

Apr 29, 2024
man that's honestly crazy how long has Chris Paul been doing it, his ball handling has virtually no weaknesses and all the players but especially the smaller guards can really learn from his game so you know me I had to Break their

to prove it scientifically. So one of the first skills you'll notice about CP's play is his ability to navigate through tight spaces, which is huge because, especially when defenders go under screens or blitz a screen, there's not going to be a lot of space. to pass and the main quality. What allows them to do this are the angles it can take.

Notice how he leans his entire body towards the defender and uses the outside edge of his foot to take that sharp angle and move around Memphis, but he's able to do this because he's so great at keeping the ball away from the defender, regardless of what close to him as he traverses these tight spaces, and he is able to do so due to an incredible amount of ball control and, more specifically, how well he cuffs the ball, or in other words, manipulates it. as the ball is in your hand for example your handcuffing ability allows you to grab the ball from the front of your body as seen here in that wrap or sell it so hard in and out, this will really help sell your moves because that ball Basically just follows where you go, this is what we mean by having the ball on a string and it also allows you to sell movement with the ball because although technically defenders should not look at the ball on defense, cp3 uses it as a tool to take down defenders, so here are some ways he does it, one is simply a farce of gods and its variations, throwing that ball and then recovering it on the other side is not the most fundamental, but once you have a good understanding of where he can fit is the killer

in a hurry he will return to shoot the three the fake passes from another be it a small turn as seen here a fake hit on the back or even after picking up the ball the uses to catch defenders out of position says I still have something here uh that's called having someone on skates uh it's also just carrying that ball away from their body, which a lot of times will sell that move much more effectively, that requires a lot of control, another thing you'll notice is that in simpler terms he just uses a lot of moves for most players this would be considered over dribbling but for him it just keeps the defender guessing and somehow lulling them to sleep , let's talk about its startup now.

I will notice that he doesn't go too low, but he takes a very long step for the defender to advance and this also puts him in a very good deceleration position, but you have to be strong to decelerate and get out of that position. which makes it really impressive how well he does it, also notice how he floats out many times which means that after you push back both feet will be off the ground so you are free to do whatever like pass here or take that little extra step. Back here sometimes there can also be a bit of a push, but with the forearm, which will probably almost never be called, also notice how he keeps the ball behind him while he starts backwards to protect the ball and finally what is the start without touching the defender's hips. flipped, don't know what the hell is going on with his arms here, cp3 makes him move downhill before coming back.

Next is the wide base he gets into to sell these moves laterally with that big step out, the defender has no choice but to slide with him and even better is how he continually changes from narrow to wide making it easier for him to drop from high to low and back up again. Watch here how he starts with narrow feet, standing tall, widens and lowers, comes back up with narrow ones. the base goes low and wide again, goes back up and then back down on that move, you can't protect that when you add that ball hanging outside his body, it's a recipe for selling that move and then going wide and wide again , it's over. between his legs, he also never accelerates, he always plays at his own pace, aware of his surroundings and playing to stay away until an opportunity presents itself, which often allows him to shoot out of these defensive positions.

Look here as his body moves away, the defender is between him and the ball and the defender does not expect it to explode out of this position, which is the best time to go to the right and amplifies the defender's uncertainty by using his head and eyes to look in the opposite direction and then comes out of that defensive stance and will eventually do a quick jump or slide to allow the defender more time to get to him, which doesn't sound like a good thing from above, but it helps you read if they do. You're out of control, in which case you just bypass them like here or they'll stop dead like they do here, in which case he shoots just to buy himself time to read that defender, so all of these tools are what you can potentially add. your game try it work on them let me know what you think thanks for watching stay tuned for much more and follow me on Instagram by any means basketball for much more
