In Conversation with Clio Cresswell In The Studio

Apr 21, 2024
this woman on my left is called Cleo Cresswell, she is a mathematician from the University of Sydney and she is looking at mathematical approaches to finding love, very clear Chris, welcome to the

studio

, thank you if you have any questions, of course, for Cleo, remember to come in. contact Lucy or Steven or hashtag TEDx

studio

I don't want to spoil your talk I know, yeah, so what can we talk about? Everything is alright? You are right exactly fine. I slept for two days. um. Okay, I'm going to ask you. a question, so I can't ask you about your talk, so yes, your book, your previous book, which kind of touches on what the talk is about, it's about mathematics and sex, but you're writing another book, right? ?, and I heard it.

That took a bit of research, so what have you been up to? It's a secret, everything is a secret, well I'll say this, but when math, the biggest complaint in the whole world about math and sex wasn't enough, math has enough sex, no, I haven't heard of that. and there's not enough of my personality, so it's just because the audience wanted more math, there's a lot more math, but then I put in a lot more sex just to balance it out, okay, so we can expect more sex, more math, yeah, that in itself is 60, I will never do it. being asked to speak at a high school, okay, but you've also been working on a book, okay, and and and and I heard and we were talking, does that mean that yes, yes, today we're going to talk to Markus Zusak?

It's hard to talk again. with another book and you've been struggling with this, you say so. So how has Ted helped you with this process? Oh yeah, so writing a book, I find it a very lonely experience to tear your hair out, but you have to do it because you know. This is it and it needs to come out. I've been writing this one for many years, but mainly because it's so much more, there was so much more art to it, since it's more of a narrative math and sex is a big part of it. more like an honors thesis, it's very much a summary of scientific stuff and the next one is much more of an emotional journey, so there's more skill.

It took me a year to write math and sex, the next one there's more skill, so it's much better, okay, and now the other one. What's a read about you is that you came to math pretty late, so yeah, realize I never answered your previous question, so it's okay, you're like a politician, you just answer with whatever you want, that's how works here, you were late to math. when you were 18 yes, well, before you were a fan of mathematics no, actually I was more of an artist. I grew up in France and in France your high school specializes and my specialty was ceramics, ceramics, ceramics, but when I came to Australia I had I started painting and it's really creepy because when I look at the paintings now they're quite mathematical, but at the time I had no interest in mathematics and the other question I have here is: I will admit that this everywhere in the world is that I am severely mathematically challenged but you think that's all I haven't taught you, okay?
in conversation with clio cresswell in the studio
I'm sure that if I grab you and sit you down and tell you, let's do the Pythagorean theorem from scratch, oh my God, with a bottle of wine we could be. the bottle of wine we could do this I think you would understand we have about a minute left can you teach me or someone else here is a challenged mathematical theorem but no, that could you teach me mathematics in a minute? It's possible? God no, God, well, I see mathematics as a narrative. I just wrote a research paper called the hero is In life, the equal sign is when you have moved on to a new stage, that's okay, that's okay, that's okay, oh guys, did we need the bottle of wine?
Bottle of Y. I prefer white wine if you are buying from Cleo Cresswell. I want to talk to you. much more, but I know we can't because we can't ruin your great TEDx talk, so let's all, of course, stay this afternoon. It would be very conservative. Chris, well, in the main, yes, very conservative, there are some things that she is going to do. To tell you I can't tell you that's why I'm putting together an area here that's really good so I can't wait for this one and today we're asking you all what's your biggest lesson worth sharing so Cleo Cresswell. mathematician author of sex and mathematics your best lesson worth sharing is that, with mathematics in particular, everyone wonders when we are going to use these things and I think that is what in life governs you too much, do you ever is this going to work? be useful, that's ridiculous, you have to embrace all your creativity, embrace everything that life brings to you and lo and behold, later on, it will all come together into something very creative.
Wow, well that's it my friends, please think clearly, Chris.
