Apr 06, 2024
thank you hello everyone, today we are going to take a food tour of Chinatown. My friends Michael and Vincent are visiting, so I thought I'd personally take them to our very own SF Chinatown. I grew up going to Chinatown all the time because my grandmother has lived there. for 40 or 50 years, so she has a very special place in my heart and I am very excited to show her. Also, this video is sponsored by Squarespace, but we'll talk about that later and yeah, without further ado, let's head to Chinatown, okay? During our first stop in Chinatown we went to Good Mongkok Bakery.

I'm sure a lot of you have heard of this place before because it's super famous and I actually featured it in my SF Cheap Eats video like three years ago, so this place has been around for a long time and my family used to Coming here all the time growing up, it's like a little dim sum place and it's known for having really big, delicious and really cheap dim sum, but since it's takeout only, we wanted a place to sit so actually we're in this

boba

shop and don't worry, we also have a drink, but yeah, we have this huge plate of dim sum.

Here we have some sumai Haceo, a shark fin dumpling I'm sure. not a real shark fin and a sticky rice bun because we were very curious about that so first, let's try the sumai and I can immediately tell you that this sumai is much smaller, they definitely reduced the size because they used to be like that. big and I used to have trouble even biting into it because it was so big it puffs up so anyway we're going to try it it has so much meat and then you also have the shrimp which has a nice crunch to it and the skin is very thin.

It's always a solid choice, you can't go wrong with your mind. The next step is the Haceo. I also think these shrink a bit. I think with this one you could shrink quite a bit, maybe half the size, but this one is like two-thirds the size. It used to be that you had that really nice Crystal wrapper, soft and chewy, and it just holds those perfectly juicy shrimp inside so well that I'm imagining that hug with a little chili oil that would be a game changer now that we have . the shark fin dumpling, which I'm sure isn't real shark fin because I'm pretty sure it's illegal, looks really good with all those dumpling folds, so let's try it, there are actually peas in here, which I really didn't expect. when I was chewing on the filling, you get a Porky-like flavor, but then I immediately got that peas flavor and I thought that was really interesting because I don't think I've ever had peas in a dumpling before, how unique. experience aside from that, it seems like the rest of the filling is just shrimp and pork.

I don't really see any imitation shark fin or anything like that, so it's interesting that they called it shark fin dumpling. Then we have this sticky rice bun. which I think has a sticky rice filling inside and then the outside layer is actually very thin and almost looks like skin. I guess that's not a very appetizing way to describe it, just a very thin layer of dough on the outside, so let's give it a try, thanks, yes, it's basically like sticky rice wrapped almost like a dumpling or a wonton wrapper. I don't think I've ever had anything like this before, so we're having a lot of new experiences today.
I feel this is kind. a fun way to eat sticky rice on the go, it almost reminds me of an onigiri, almost like a chinese version, in a very interesting way. We then went a few doors down to the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, a legendary Landmark bakery since 1962. I have never seen so many different fortune cookies and you can even see them making fortune cookies by hand, of which they make

more

5,000 per day. They even give you a free sample while you browse and purchase flavors. They have original chocolate. green tea, strawberry and even dipped with various decorations.
I was looking at these rounds of black sesame fortune cookies but then this huge fortune cookie caught our eye and we had to get it when you pull it apart it's actually full of regular size fortune cookies let's see

what

. My fortune says: OMG, actually create a website with Squarespace, but seriously, Squarespace is an easy way to achieve your goals and aspirations, for example, if you are passionate about Chinese food like me and want to blog about all the different ones. restaurants in Chinatown Squarespace can do that or if you love dim sum and want to spread that love by selling dim sum products, Squarespace can do that or say you're on a journey to find the best egg boards and you'll want to have a feedback feature on your website to create an egg chart.
The Squarespace community can do that and all of this is done without coding or design experience. It's one of my favorite underrated restaurants in Chinatown. My favorites are their chosu roast pork dish, which is super juicy and tender, not to mention it's only nine dollars. I also love the SEO yolk roast pork here. The pieces are so fatty and succulent with that perfectly crispy skin, such an amazing contrast between the Crunch and the tender, juicy meat. We also got their seared roast duck and it was super delicious. You definitely have to visit this place for cheap filling and delicious food in Chinatown your sudden look and time started running towards the face blocking my way oh wait they don't even get offended oh is it there?
Wow, that's great, apologies for this interesting angle, but we have a lot of products. that didn't have places to sit so we are improvising a sitting area but first we went and soon it's like a souvenir shop but they sell some drinks and other pastries too but I was really interested. at her yotel hot dog the last time i tried to come they were like out so I'm glad today we finally got to try it we basically watched her open the yotel and then put in some pickled vegetables and then layer it. This huge hot dog is topped with

pickled vegetables and then with a drizzle of mustard, it also comes with a joke garnish also known as kanji, let's go ahead and try this, oh my god, I don't even know how to attack this thing, greetings.
Yeah that's very interesting so the hot dog actually has a good kick to it and it's very meaty and tasty but the yo chow you know you always want the yotel to be crispy but this one is not as crispy which makes it not so crispy. nice in my opinion and the hotel dough is a little doughy and definitely feels like the little touch of mustard and pickled vegetables added like sourness or fermented cabbage. I actually had high expectations because this is by the same owner as Mr Juice which is right here if you can see the sign yeah overall very interesting I probably wouldn't recommend it but it's unique but I'm still glad having tried it.
I think if the yotel was crispy and fluffy, it would be a lot. Better, I just think the towels need some work and then we also went to Napoleon Super Bakery, which I think they also have a location in Oakland's Chinatown. A year ago, my mom and I tried 16 different egg

tarts

in San Francisco that we were trying to make. I tried almost all of them and it actually ruined the alert for us. Napoleon was the best of all the ones we were able to try, of course Golden Gate Bakery was not open that day. This is our go-to place if they are not open.
Always look at how beautiful this egg tart looks, it looks so flaky and that golden custard inside, oh my gosh that smell is so buttery, oh my gosh they need to make an egg tart scented candle or an air freshener because I definitely would. purchase, that crust is very flaky and buttery and the cream inside is billowy but not too much, you know, it has a nice sweetness and eggy flavor and it's very creamy and discreet. I want to go back and buy some more, it's so good. Oh, do I get in my face? We also have this.
I just saw it in the little window display and knew I had to get it because it literally brings back childhood memories. If my parents ever bought me one of these, I knew I was being a good boy, you know, it just tastes like my parents were proud of me, the bun is a little sweet, it chews well and then the taste of the hot dog takes it away. balances very well. Well now we are at I Cafe Bakery and they are known for their very popular Tashu Bao which has a sugary crust. I think it's called SEO Bao, which means grilled bun.
Also sorry if there is any flickering. I tried to fix it on my camera. I really don't know

what

's going on. Sorry if that distracts you, let's go ahead and separate this foreign, oh my goodness, valuable piece of meat, it's actually very sweet, I guess because the BBQ pork filling is already sweet and then the bun on top is even sweeter. sweet. a bit of the umaminess of pork but it's actually very sweet. I think I would have liked it if it wasn't so sweet but I also think it would be super good if it was fresh like it just came out of the oven.
The bread is actually very soft. and fluffy, which I like a lot. I'm actually getting really full, but I can always do a Chinatown food tour, part two, so if you want to see a part two where I show you more Chinatown food, let's take this video to 5,000. I like it, but yeah, let's go to the last stop, so I bought jasmine milk tea with green tea Boba kumquat, green tea, of course, you have to use the Boba straw to feed me. Link in description, okay, done, one, two, three, they are jasmine, strong, sweet, creamy. and the Boba is really good yeah okay so for our last stop on our Chinatown tour we are at chong ching xiaomian that's right they are okay they are really known for their spicy

noodles

so here we have the danda

noodles

and they come in spicy broth. we have the thin noodles and you can see it has minced pork and vegetables, it looks like cabbage and it's topped with some cilantro, oh my gosh look at that, it's super tasty, definitely get that spicy tingle coming out of the noodles. chew them and really retain the flavor of the broth very very well, the cabbage is very good because it adds a nice crunch that contrasts the soup and then the chewiness of the noodles, that spiciness hit the back of my throat like it didn't.
In a bad way it's actually very good definitely a solid bowl of noodles and I actually haven't been to this place in years but it's as good as I remember and then we got a second bowl of noodles this is the spicy beef noodle soup. guys you know I'm a fan of beef noodle soup it comes with this huge beef rib look I wasn't expecting this oh that spicy oh my gosh I'm really impressed how much flavor the noodles can retain because already they know. Sometimes when you have noodles, it doesn't absorb any of the flavor and then it's a little bland without the soup, but this one actually sticks to the noodles really well.
I'm going to take a bite of this huge beef rib. I do not do it. I even know where to start hmm oh my god I barely had to bite into it it's so cute it just fell off. Wow, that is very good, very tender and complements the flavor of the soup very, very well.
