How to Add and Remove (if you Lost Yubikey) 2Fa on Protonmail

Apr 08, 2024
Hello everyone, I'm Rick with Cybermedics and we're here today to talk about Proton Mail, so let's get started in particular, we'll discuss how to add two-factor authentication and we'll address the issue of how to

remove

two-factor authentication if you've

lost

your key. security with ybikey, so let's look at the process here. Let's go to Settings, let's go to Settings and here on the left you'll go to Account & Password. We'll say you turn on two-factor authentication next. I downloaded the ubico authentication app. I'm going to delete this because it was a previous

protonmail

installation. I'm going to delete this one too so we don't get confused so now it will say enter the key manually or scan the code the easiest thing to do here is scan the code I just want to show you this key because it's a good idea to copy it and put it somewhere where you can access it later if needed, so let's go ahead and just run notepad that way, we can paste everything into notepad, there it is, there's the actual key and let's go ahead and scan the QR code and here we can click here and say scan QR code and you will see that it already appears. the issuer email address and you just say add account and it's really that simple I mean now we're going to go here they're going to verify your account and make sure the two factors are working well so here you just double click in that, tap your key   and this six digit code has been copied  to the clipboard, you can just paste it and send it and this is vitally important here, these are backup codes, now we will copy them and then we will put them in the notepad that we opened earlier and I highly recommend that you download them and save them somewhere because one of our users commented that they

lost

their key and wanted to know how to cancel two-factor authentication, so we're going to walk you through that process and say, okay , now we have two factor authentication, let's go ahead and log out and we'll do the process real quick just to show you how it works and we'll click here. now we're going to have to enter a code so we're going to go and get the app, the authenticator, we're going to double click and it's going to say tap the key, it's going to generate the code, it's actually in the clipboard so we can just paste the code and it says authenticate, pretty much simple, eh, there it goes, it's authenticating.

Here is the scenario that one of our subscribers ran into, they lost their security key and wanted to know so we went to settings click on settings go to account and password and they wanted to know how to disable this and we say yes when they didn't have the key so right now there is a two factor authentication key that will ask you to enter if you don't have the key you wouldn't be able to activate this authenticator app to get the correct code so what do you do right ? What you do is go down here to the codes that you had previously created and copy one of them and then come back here and paste it. try again okay and then say submit and you will see that the code disabled the second factor authentication so it is no longer there although you lost the key which meant you couldn't start this app and access this code six digits.
