Extreme - Rise Guitar lesson breakdown

Mar 18, 2024
Hey guys, I got a lot of requests to do a

lesson

on the

extreme

climbing video. Thanks for all the great comments, by the way, it was totally unexpected, but I appreciate it, so I'm going to do this kind of quick, hopefully slow enough. Although so you can watch it when you need to and I'm just going to play the parts of the song and give you a couple of tips and things along the way, um, so let's get started so we get to know the standard drop D intro tuning. Okay , in the first part of the song we're using those double stops, we're using a lot of open threes and fives on the low E and the A string, so we have to go to the six and then we're just going to alternate that riff with the fifth fret, that's what we have, so that's one of our first little riffs, which is the fun part of learning these things, opening three and five on the low E string, okay, after that and start the song here, so we're in the verse here, okay, so there's our second little Nuno uh interval riff here, so we've got that again, just open up the third fret and the fifth fret, okay, the next little part is okay, so there's our third little riff. there from Nuno, so we got this, so we open three and four on the low E string and the third fret of the A and then we're going to go three four again, the fifth fret of the a, up to the third fret of the low E . foreigner, okay, that's the riff and then we're going to move on to this other section.

Okay, that part is again three and five and it opens up and then it goes into the chorus part, so real quick, just listen to the beginning of this chorus part. One thing I missed in the original video is that right before we go into the course it's like an introduction and then it goes into this six and five and also goes down a little bit to the three with our D open. string and one thing I want to mention about this - I didn't play it right in the original video - is that you really have to listen to the timing, because Newton almost plays a little bit behind the beat when he comes in with that, so don't play it straight like I did.

More Interesting Facts About,

extreme rise guitar lesson breakdown...

I did in the video, you want it to be like that overseas, so if you could tell the difference, I was behind the beat just a little bit on those, okay and then you can keep playing it until the next one. two chords, but only for playing and musically I like to play B flat chords. I'm going to this chord by John G. I'm on the five here five seven eight. I just like to do that to give it flavor one and go back to three. five three so play along with that foreigner okay cool little Nuno Rift there so we have we're in deep pentatonic so we have five on the A7 back to five five on the g seven again on the D seven on the G back to seven, when we get to five again on the G, we're going to achieve it, so we have this okay, so we accelerate, okay, and then, okay, so this aspect is a little complicated, basically goes. a lot of fast cams trigger well, so we have one string, we're going to open five, open four and then we're going to go from four to two and then we're going to perform a lot of Threes and it opens on the descending strings, okay and a little trick or advice if it works great for you.

I like to go with the third finger and then the second finger and go back to the third finger here okay so that's the one your mileage may vary if you want to use a third finger all the way is also okay so that's awesome classic noodle riff and you also want to keep the palm muted on this one in particular so I'm going to show you a couple of ways you can play it. I like it. To do it this way, starting at the fifth fret of the A string, going to three and five on the D, then we'll do this kind of broken thirds sequence on the way down from five to three and three to five on the A.

A. open five, open one, okay, so I'll do it slowly again, so we thank you and one thing: I'll give you a little tip here too. You can use the third finger to start and then switch to the second finger when you return. Down here, work on it slowly, always take these things very slowly, I teach on the side, I always tell my students that only one strong lick is necessary, break it up into small sections, so we're good, that's how we lick and we'll move on go ahead, okay? So this one is similar to the other one, we're just adding a Unison Bend so we have it's going to be just the first fret on the B string bending the full step on the third fret of the G string and then we go back to the chorus fast forward here pre- chorus okay, so it's a cool little ascending chord pattern here, so let's go, it's like this, we're going to use the 12th and 14th octaves on the A and G strings and we're going to slide down a whole step, so we repeat the open string uh a and E there and then the second part is just this, so we're just going to do the string to ten, seven to eight, so we have and then we're going to continue.
Do the same thing, but now we're going to ascend the chords, so we have G if you go to the third fret, A if you go to the fifth fret and then we'll go to the eighth fret to the seventh fret and this is where just because it's a recording, you're going to have to decide if you want to do that at the end because Nuno will already be at the beginning of that crazy solo so let's go a little deeper into the solo here yeah foreigner so I'm going. To give you the gist of the solo anyway, it's a little crazy, so there are two ways to play this first part and you can think of this first part of the solo as four sections, so to speak, and here are the four sections, like this that this is what we need. to know we can do ten eight five, which I like to do, um, you could do 10 8 and 9 and that's going to be our first little section, so he's going to do this here's our second section, so that's 13 12 10 and 12 . so our third section will be 18 17 50. 17 in G and then here 20 18 17.
Okay, so the four sections are basically here here and this is where the solo for this first part happens, so we have this. I'll do it more or less slowly, yes, the last part is just a curve in 20. So I'll try to play along a little here to give you more ideas. Okay, I like the next part with the punch board. to do it here open air my second fret fifth fret seven and ten all the G strings okay, you can do it here five and seven if you want something foreign, the next part we have that cool curve where we want to play the string if with the double that double stop almost 13. doubles a half step on the 12. and then goes into these cool mixolydian licks in D, so adding that major third we're going to be good, so that's 13 10 14 10 14. excuse me 13 10 ending on that major third again on the 11th fret, let's see if you can make sure you can see it, okay, that's that part, let me continue here, okay, so let's slow down this part here a little bit, export, so we have, then we're going to go 12 13 and then 10g string to the foreign B string and then we're going to stay in this blues scale uh D, okay, that's the next part, so I'm going to do it again real slow, okay, and then the next one .
The part will be this. I'm going to play slow, okay, so I'll do it again. I'm just doing the pull-offs from 13 to 10 and then I'll go down from 12 to 11. Um, okay, that's next. part if you want, let me play it just so it's fresh in your ears, okay, and then the last part, uh, let's see, I'll be sure to talk about it, sorry, so we've got the go-ahead, so it's a guy small and neat jump rope. of something here, so we have and then it ends with a so again it's the three five, three and five, okay and then we get to the crazy part, a little tip and caution about this little tip, uh, there's only four chords. practice the second chord because you will get hurt like Rick Piato mentioned, that's totally true, your hand will kill if you try to solve this by doing the other thing, so don't do it, that's my advice, so now we know.
You guys have probably already seen the lick or watched Rick Piatta's video because he's right, there are a couple other guys that did it right, I think too, so I thank them. I'm sure there are some videos of this lick on This Point on YouTube so I'll go over it real quick because you can reference Rick's video. Okay, but my advice is to just practice the open seven form seven and ten. This form will kill you. The form no. And this way will kill you. this shape will kill you, okay, so the shape or pattern will be this.
I'll make it a little slow, but I'm not going to spend too much time on it because, again, you can reference Rick Biato. video, so we got this, that's how I would practice it, although super slow and I would just take it in small chunks, so that's the first part, open 710 and then yeah, and the way I play it is Rick said he believes that Nuno could be uh alternatively choose this if he is, that's crazy to me, uh, I don't know, I can't play like that, I can't choose like that for this kind of lick, so what I'm doing is choosing In the first note with the open strings, I'm actually doing a hammer on two waves of Hammer and I would call the hammer out of nowhere, so I'm going to go so we're good and then the next part will be again, we'll just choose Hammer.
Hammer and then the next note is that open D and I would do it again, split it into four notes at a time, add like two notes or whatever until you can memorize the pattern, okay, and then you just build speed that way , but build that pattern slowly, it's the only way I could get close to getting it and I still mess up this part of the solo all the time, so, but it will click for you, so the next part is so I'll draw. it's a little bit slower, okay, so once you get that pattern, it'll be easier to just apply it to those other shapes, which will be 0712 to start and then 0812.
Okay, so you'll get it, just try to mark it. at that moment and it will click for you at some point, okay, but that's that part and it also works on your palm. Beauty with that because Nuno is just amazing at that stuff, so you basically have that other thing that I do in this, uh. If you look at my right hand, I tend to do a little bit of hybrid picking, that's natural for me, so I'm doing the picking, so I may end up doing a little bit of hybrid picking, okay, that's natural for me, but you don't. .
It doesn't have to, it won't slow you down much, but I think the hammer vs hammer thing coming out of nowhere is the way to go, unless you're a crazy gear selector, in which case you'll have more power and then finishes with that little Bend type double stop of your deep pentatonic, so just hold the 13th fret of the B and then the full step on the 12th. Okay, nothing too difficult in that part after the solo and then at the end, I think We've got another riff or two. I'm going to live well, so I'm not sure it'll be great to play.
I think those octaves, that upper melody, are happening there, so what's happening there is that we have nine and eleven and he goes up to 12 and 14. 15 and 17. It's a nice, foreign flavor, nothing changes here, it's just a half-time feeling, which is cool, one more Rift is coming, okay, that's a classic, cool kind of Riff, um, okay, so I'm basically starting with the fifth one. E fret E bass opens three five on the A and then five three on the D three five and then three five again and that's it, that's it, I hope that helps you, I'm not that sophisticated when it comes to writing tablature. and all that.
I don't know how to do that but anyway I hope you get something out of it and it helps you if you have any questions post comments bye.
