Granite Shoals police taking out trash violators
Mar 28, 2024There's too much
trash
. Landing yards around parts of Central Texas and the insects behind them could soon face jail time. Thanks for joining us. I'm Tom Miller. I'm Avery Travis. The Granite Shoals Police Department is having trouble getting people to clean up. after officers even arrest repeat offenders kxans Blake Devine joins us live on The Newsroom and Blake wrote alongside thepolice
commander to take a closer look at this issue. Good morning Avery and Tom, you know that this problem has persisted for quite some time. This small town of about 5,000 people, but as it continues to grow like so many places in Central Texas, all thistrash
is actually driving down the property values of the homes being built in the area.As you drive around the neighborhood you will see trash in various yards, this includes trash, debris, old storage buildings, beat up boats, and even junk cars. Several complaints led
police
to address this issue through their code enforcement division that monitors environmental crimes in the area. One concern they have is all this trash draining into Lake LBJ and Edwards. The aquifer, everything on the street, in the yard or otherwise, will flow into Lake LBJ and ultimately the Edwards Aquifer. Things like that that are going into our system that are basically killing our aquifer, killing our lake system and it's all going downstream according to the Granite Shoals Police Department, someone could be arrested for leaving lead-acid batteries. on the floor. These car batteries can leak oils and gases into the ground. This is actually a class A misdemeanor in Texas, meaning you could be arrested without a warrant with this enforcement effort allowed. They have managed to clean up quite a few properties over time, but there is still a lot of work to do. They are trying to avoid an environmental catastrophe that could be caused by heavy rains.
