Mar 15, 2024
Denny Hamlin won his third Daytona and joins us on the show, Denny, congratulations, take me through the last two laps yesterday, yeah, it's a little crazy to me, but obviously we were leading with two to go and then, uh, I'm doing my best to stay in front of those guys, but I knew I had seven boards I think lined up behind us and you were the only two at the time. I knew they would come with a rush, so I turned too. He told me that the boys were by my side. Ryan was two lengths back and I knew at that point that he was probably too far ahead, so I gave up the spot.

I didn't want to try to grow a block and be done. crashed on the backstretch, so those guys pulled up next to me and passed me and I connected with the back bumper of the Blaney and my best shot was to push him into the head and just see what happens. and those guys hit me head first, you know, they came out of turn four and headed towards the yellow line, you know, I knew there was going to be contact, so I tried to stay as far to the right as I could, away from it. of them, but I saw Ryan Newman's car.

I turned right, right in front of me and as soon as that happened, I saw his car play and I went in, picked him out and made that charge right at the start/finish line, enough to win it all again. I felt like I had to go to third to get back to first, yeah, I mean, I thought I had a chance to stay next to Ryan down the stretch, but Blaney, but I knew that if we were going to be next to each other, then The race would be over for me. so my best option really was to push him back towards the lead and then hope

y they'd get together or I could make a wide three at the start/finish line, so I knew what my best chance was.

I wanted to check and fulfill three. to Blaney's rear bumper and pushed him towards them and when did you realize you'd want to? Yeah, just as I cross the line, I mean, I was in a photo finish there in 2016, which is the closest finish ever and I think this was now the second one, so I've been in that position before and I knew I was far enough ahead to beat him, but it's crazy because you know it's only 100 or 200 yards before the start/finish line. Did you know about third place and somehow I managed to get there and I won the race and you know it's very unexpected, especially after that, you know, going down the stretch and I'm laughing when I come back to third place.

I just thought the race was over, but we kept digging, when did you realize that something serious was going on, nothing serious with Ryan Newman? Yeah, I mean, I didn't know anything until I got to victory lane, not until you knew that, when they canceled the

at the beginning. /finish line they knew something was going on at that point, so I drove to victory lane and they told me, you know, you know there's a serious injury with Ryan. I hadn't seen it yet, so I saw the cameraman there and they had on the monitor and they were playing it and I and I saw it at that moment and I thought, wow, it's definitely something serious, so it was a victory lane a little quiet.
I guess you could say you know there wasn't, you know because there was a lot of speculation, many of you know, you don't ask that people didn't know and luckily we got better news later that night, but I thought its owner Joe Gibbs and you two took care of that. I mean, you guys knew it. There was something serious, even when you get out of the car, you're basically saying, "Hey, you know what we won." I'm happy, but you know, I don't know what just happened to this driver, and even when Joe Gibbs said basically the same thing like it was a silent celebration by your team, yeah, I mean, it has to be right, I mean , you think about knowing that someone's well-being or health is obviously much more important than any sporting event you have.
Could you win? You know we are there for entertainment purposes. I mean, you have two daughters and I have two daughters too, so you can definitely relate and you definitely think about meeting them and their family. that moment and you know, from my perspective and we haven't celebrated yet, you know, this will still take you time to think about and reflect on in the coming weeks. I don't think people understand the magnitude. of that track, though Danny, because the feeling I got from reading some social media is: how are you celebrating with an accident? You're probably a mile and a half from where Ryan Newman's car is.
I guess it gives people a perspective of where Victory Lane is and where. Ryan's car was yes, and even the surface time, everyone was towards the camp between the start/finish line and turn one and you know, I'll be honest with you, there are accidents at the end of these races almost every time, so which is definitely so. not out of the ordinary, but just when we went to the start/finish line and the Peavey personality came up and said there was no

interview

here, I thought something was going on and then when we went to Victory Lane and an official from NASCAR came and talked to I grew up with that's when I did it like, hey, I actually told the guys to stop, don't throw any more Gatorade, you know he's seriously hurt and at that point everyone calmed down, so you know It's very far away and how.
I said this track is two and a half miles long, so yes, you can be what you would think is very close and here you are a mile away, if I had told you ten years ago that you would have three Daytona 500s, what would you have done? said what am I going to start earning? I mean, it's crazy. To have the heel we've been on for the last five years to win three of them has been incredible and we're definitely looking forward to it. I've gotten better at those types of races, they're different than the ones we run weekly, but it was kind of a knack for it and it's a matter of the results showing all the work we put into it, so one in several different ways, like I said. , you know some of the two closest finishes in history, but I'm telling you it's an incredible race that happened right now, you know what's weird when I'm watching this in real time and I see the crack.
We're so used to you guys just getting out of a car, I think member, yeah, click Boyer with what happened to him and then he sets the car on fire, he's glad to get out, he takes off his gloves and he does a couple of years and he just puts him in the car like we're so used to you guys being indestructible with these cars with the tracks with the walls here and I think that's what was shocking, you guys kept going late, he's not going to get out, he has to get out. . and then, then the serious nature really set in, yes, absolutely, and I mean this, it's something that we sometimes take for granted because you know the cars and all the equipment that we use have the innovations and the advances in safety have We've come this far, but when you forget about that and we're going 200 miles an hour and eventually a car can appear on your roof like that, that's an opportunity for another car to hit you, that's what happened, like that. which was definitely a worst case scenario, you know, that's probably the weakest part of the car, the most exposed, is right there, through the roof or through the window of the car, you know, Jarvis, but, fortunately, we have, You know, like I say, you know much better, encouraging news that we think everything will be okay.
Well, congratulations Denny, I know that's going to be lost and obviously Ryan's health is paramount here, but I thought you, Coach Gibbs and your team handled it very well. I appreciate it, man.
