You will also need a wire brush. Some abrasives. I prefer to use this mesh type abrasive, some type of flexible abrasive like. the sponge here is a medium grit sandpaper some handy cubes quality materials that I'm going to touch on in a second let's get started here is our first step what we really want to do during this first step is get good adhesion and a little bit of texture, so I'm going to go ahead and use this wire brush to give this door a little bit of texture and also that will give us that proper seam that we're looking for, a very important step before I forget you.

You have to clean

your

doors very well, you will need some type of degreaser to cut the grease and then a soapy substrate to wash everything off. I prefer plain green followed by Dawn, that's what you can probably find in your

kitchen

. cabinets and then we're ready to sand, so I go very carefully around the door going into the profile. Well, this has been pretty easy so far and you can see how nice and easy it is to sand this door. The finish must have been some type of polyurethane or nitrocellulose lacquer that they used back in the day, about 30 years ago, but in case it's kind of greasy and rubbery and you really want to get rid of that finish if you're really worried about the adhesion not is there, you might want to give it a light sanding with pretty coarse sandpaper and that will be 150 or 120.

I have 180 in this case, that will be enough, but just to show you what you want. go ahead and go around the door, you know, and give it a good sand, you might want to consider buying that orbital sander that you can find at any Home Depot Lowe's or any hardware store that you have around the corner, so those orbital sanders are going to do your life a little easier. The exterior will get into all the cracks or profiles that we have here. Once we're done with the sanding, we can vacuum it all up or blow it out with the blower.

I'll be back in a second, when I've dusted myself off, I'm ready to do the primer and here's the trick that you won't see in those videos that got millions of views. All of those guys use solvent-based coatings from Industrial Coatings, that's the crucial part. spray it all in the paint booth so here's how you can use a brush and the water based stuff that really works so the first one I want to introduce you to is a product called envirolack and those guys have a one component formulation which is called t9000. that blocks all the tanning of the wood, any previous stains that you may have on your old oak cabinets.
The other brand I like is CAC or Centurion Coatings, those are great too, however if you don't have access to these industrial polyurethane manufacturers. Coatings you can get away with bin zinser shellac primer, that primer you can find at your local Home Depot or most paint stores you have in your house now, when it comes to suru type of finishes, a super finish smooth and flawless is not something that is extremely important, however, I will give you some interesting tips so that you can get a really smooth finish, so watch until the end so as not to miss any of them, so we are ready for the priming stage .
I mixed up some primer, this is actually in virolact t9000 with a little bit of water, you can use that shellac based container that you would like to have the respirator in. I prefer to use the respirator every time I work with paintings, that's a good habit. So now when I have my primer, I'm going to wet my brush and get to it. You want to go nice and steady, getting into all these corners here all the way to the profile, don't leave it too thick, give it a little bit. It's time to level now, once I apply my first coat I'll give it a little time to test and then apply my second coat to make sure I don't have any bleeding into my primer coat. and then I'll follow up with a top coat which will be white for the upper cabinets and my nice navy blue for the lower cabinets.
Okay, these are my two coats of primer. We have a little brush marks, but that's it. totally okay, we're going to get rid of it now that it's ready for the top coat, so what I'm going to do now is quickly sand this primer so you can see that we have no bleeding or yellow material, which is exactly what we're looking for this It's soft enough for me. I'm going to go ahead and apply my top coat now, so we're ready for the top coat. These are sanded and dusted. In fact, it's pretty. The blue door that's going to go on the bottom cabinets and we're going to paint the top one with a brush white so you can see there's a very small difference with the technique that I'm going to show you in just a little bit foreign, I just finished my top coat on the white door , which is a single component top coat of cic.
They can get away with any top coat that is single component polyurethane. Now we're going to let it dry for about a day or so, I'm really happy with how it turned out, we have a little bit of brush strokes but it's totally fine, they'll even out and then when I come back tomorrow this will be pretty much ready for the next one. step which is to apply the polish which is actually what is going to give us that pretty cerus look and that is exactly what we are going to do after approximately 24 hours have passed.
Now I'm back in the store with my completely dry samples. These are pretty. oak doors, so this is what I like about them and this is what I don't like about them. I like the color, but I don't like the grain I see, as many other people are not so strange. now this deep and open grain is very visible and doesn't look very good, however everything changes when we do the next step which is glazing or actually waxing. People also call it dry glaze, white glaze and there are several different names no matter what it is. we're going to highlight the grain so it stands out and this will change everything and this is what I'm going to use.
I'm going to use a black enamel for both colors, those are several different products that you can go to your local paint store and get a water based enamel. You can get this water-based pigment, which is basically a water-based spray dye that I'm using. In this case, you can get a dry polish. I also prefer water-based varnish. They'll do the same thing, highlight the Grain and without further ado, let's get into it to speed it up a bit. I use my spray gun to apply it because our goal here is to deliver the polish into the deep parts of the open grain and here it shows how easy it is to remove the polish and now we're really showing on this grain, look how pretty it looks, it's so satisfying to work with her, look at all these lines we get, it's very satisfying.
Processing all this grain just comes out very, very easy to work with and now depending on my desired look I can either leave a little more of this black polish inside all the cracks and crevices or I can remove almost all of it leaving just the actual grain it's super black , but the rest makes it look clean I would say, but you can really play with it and make it however you want. The process is very satisfactory. Also here are some little secrets that when you use this type of abrasive you can really set it. the direction of the sanding marks to give it an older look, but if you don't go after that, you can go ahead and sand everything the way you want without worrying too much about the direction of The Strokes when you decide to go ahead and do the whole thing. your

kitchen

, what you want to make sure is that you make a sample, a control sample, as we call it, and then keep it close to you while you work with all the pieces to make sure everything looks consistent, you don't want to sand a little more or a little less in two different pieces, you want to keep everything consistent, well, I'm very happy with this one, it's amazing to see this blue coming back and this is a very, very pretty royal blue it's very rich it's not too bright it's not too white it's not too black it's not too blue just again you can really play with it you can really leave as much black polish as you want you can just make the grain pop or they can also give it a little bit of an antique look with the way they tell it and obviously , as you can guess from the polish color and the base color, the paint color is your own choice. so you can play with it, you can really go in opposite directions, you can choose the black color with the white polish, you can use crazy Reds, Blues, Greens, whatever you want to do, but I chose more popular colors and this is probably the trend number one. the white and blue almost looks like the color of my jacket, it's great, with a little overlap here, if you're wondering what the wire brush does at the beginning of the process, so here you can see exactly what it does if I was a If it had been a little deeper it would have opened up the grain even more and you can see how the blue shows a little more grain and then the white is not as deep so it could have been a little deeper although this part of the frame looks pretty good, big reveal, now I'm going to take off the mask, so this looks very, very different, the grain pops are actually very nice, so now what we want to do next is lock this . polish so it doesn't go anywhere, obviously we can't leave it like that otherwise when you touch it, it's going to leave that black pigment on your hands, so we need to seal it with a clear coat and what I'm going to use here.
It's a clear coat polyurethane, you guys can definitely go ahead and use single component polyurethane. I prefer industrial coatings. Here are some brands for you that I would definitely start with in violak because it is local to me here in Canada but there is also another group of Big manufacturers, there is cic Centurion, there are Italian brands, the big Renner Lacy Circa ICA don't want to hurt feelings of anyone by not mentioning one of them, but these are the ones in my hand right now, so make sure you do. Get that single-component polyurethane-based clear coat now for maximum durability.
When I make these doors in my shop, I would definitely spray them all and definitely add that second component, the hardener, which would make my finish much more chemical resistant and much more durable. but when you do it yourself, single component polyurethane is your best option and what you want to do is like I did in my first step: dilute it with water or some type of reducer that could be used in most cases. That's the best reducer for water-based polyurethanes, but if you don't want to get too fancy, water can work fine and sometimes just five percent water can make a big difference, it can open up the finish and allow you to apply it. with brush and everything.
These bubbles will pop and the coating will level out nice and smooth. You should apply two coats of light sanding in between to remove any remaining bubbles and that nice top coat continues. I'm going to skip it. That part is very quick and shows you the final result when you apply the clear coat. This is how it should look. There should be no bubbles. I shouldn't have sanded. More nice brands and I even prefer the lower glosses. 20 Shin. It's just perfect for me, look at this beauty guys, still drying. I'm going to let it sit for a couple of hours and then I'll show you the final results and here's the final result which, um, big reveal, okay guys, look at this beauty. look at the way these doors turned out, the finish looks absolutely amazing, flawless, no bubbles, no problems, and look at this end result, I mean this and in combination with this can make your outdated cabinets look absolutely stunning, look at these grain patterns on the In the days of Golden Oak cabinet makers were trying to show that nice deep oak grain which is absolutely beautiful these days Golden Oak doesn't look up to date so in my opinion this is the perfect solution and not only that.
It eliminates the process of filling the grain, which is, let's be honest, a waste of time, but it will also show something that is absolutely beautiful and made by Mother Nature, so have fun, enjoy the process and I hope this video was helpful and I hope you learn. More of the next video here.
