e

stitches

so I made a point for some of the more interesting um but from. Of course, there are a lot of things we can talk about when it comes to applique because I guess the first question we could ask is what type of applique are you making, is it a pre-cut applique or are you going to trim the fabric during the applique. process because it matters anyway guys, so today's presentation is about applying it, um, it was fresh in my mind because it was this, this is kind of a condensed version of what we did in our class last week at my retreat. workshop.
appliqu stitches the at of machine embroidery appliqu

I gave up, you know, anyway, I made one of these pieces of art, um, today we're going to talk about Al and Al's designs, um. and I just want to remember one more thing before I forget and that is that we have a free font on Friday, right, it's a free font on Friday and this week's font is called

embroidery

bits, so there's a new font for you to come. to our website and download it and let me go ahead and show you how you can download it, but thank you, I have my son Nicholas here at the house with me today, he's there, hey Nick, hello, you have a word. uh Nick is helping me behind the scenes and so to anyone who's making comments, good morning or good afternoon, it's no longer tomorrow anywhere.
Hi Wanda, how are you in Tennessee? It's a nice day in Saskatoon. Everything is melting, as you can see. We're in the basement down here and I hope none of the water comes into the house, but I made sure it all flows the other direction, but we still have snow outside and it's melting. Hi Janita, coming from Illinois. Nice to see you today. Let's do Apple. I'll show you a little about the apps and some of my favorites. I'm going to share them with you so you can download them. show you where you can go uh these are points that might not exist in your software at least they're not in our floriani software and that's why I made a download so you can add it to your if you own floriani software you can get some assets with some of it today, so yeah, any of you, welcome, nice to see you, Jan Morgan Hill, California, having a good day there, the newest font is called broidery bits.
I love the name Nick broidery bits. Okay, so everyone is welcome to come, maybe I'll show you quickly if I open up our website, so this is the Sunset Stitches website. When they get to the top, there is a menu and one of the options says

embroidery

. fonts just go ahead and click on that scroll down, you will see that the font of the week is embroidery bits, you can click right there and download it. It will be a zip file, so your first step will be to extract the contents of the zip and then you will use your Floriani software to import it, so you don't open it.
You already know the file on Windows and I have a couple different videos on how to install it, so I'm not going to show you today, but if you went to my Floriani workshop at Creative Express, there are these videos on what you can do with the software of free embroidery, including how to import the fonts, so yeah, I should make a better link to that I guess. it would make sense anyway um from the sources page, I think that's what I'm saying is like and but I'm pretty sure what I'm going to do is put a.
I'll have a video for it. I'll put it here, that would make a lot more sense. It occurred to me so that's it. I will update the page. I will put the video here along with all the above sources for members to join my class if they wish. If you join my workshop you won't have to worry about missing any because you will have access to the font archive so there is an archive where you can download all of the above if you go back to the top of the website and where the menu is and see where it says inside the recipe box, that's where you can find the applique stitches, just go ahead and click on there are other things you'll find here and basically our free font fridays are usually themed around some type of technique and so you can learn about puffy foam and you can learn about myar or this week you can learn about applique stitches and so on and so on and click here to download them and once again it's going to be a zip file and you're going to extract it and actually when you have the floriani software what you're going to be able to do is um I'm going to go ahead and close that, when you have the floriani software you're going to be able to go ahead and import them and that's under the tools menu at the top import assets so that's what you're going to do, you're going to download them. and then you will import them, you will find them in the folder you know where you saved them. like when you download them and probably in your downloads folder which is fine because once you've imported them you can delete them so know that yes once you've imported them you can delete them so if you're ready to get them. started um I'm going to start talking about the appliqué now and if you guys have questions you can certainly ask me.
Well, I noticed my friend Orie is here today. Hey, Orie, how's she doing in Colorado? um guys I have some exciting things. news during next week's class, because I have something new, a couple of new things, you know, so everyone who is live in next week's class I'll have some news and then next Friday I'll be able to let everyone know the others, but if you don't know there's a class on Tuesday for Workshop 4 and I'll see you there Orie um, she already did her work at home and I can't wait to share it, okay, so Workshop we'll be back thank you.
Nick, but go ahead and put me back on the screen, um applique, so when we do applique um oh, it looks like I opened the program twice here. I was a little confused for a minute, but I must have clicked on it and then been impatient and started it again. I only closed one, sorry, I don't need to have two open, that could make things confusing, so apply, what I'm going to do is click open and um, it goes, uh, I want. to navigate so here sorry I didn't. I was actually more prepared than this, but now I'm not, so I have to go and open the files that I prepared for today, so appropriate points, so I wanted to open this and I'm going to quickly open them all at the same time, which I wanted to have them open, yeah, so I'm opening three or four more designs right now, um, because what?
I really wanted to talk about what applique is and what applique means to sew on embroidery. An applique means sewing a fabric. You know, one fabric on a different fabric and it could be several fabrics like this. You know, various applique pieces. Those are all appliqués on another fabric, right? And it's like one of my favorite types of applique is for patches and I make a lot of my own appliques. Bring Nick bring me big again so I can show them my um. I wore my applique sweatshirt today because on the back I have my patch there for the Sunset dots and look at the big one, there's an applique in the middle and then the patches are big appliques so I promise to make some kind of patches for you guys at some point in the future because one of my favorite things to do with applique is patches so okay bring me back to the screen for my um happy face patch and gingerbread men , because if you have illustrations, then the applique is very easy to make with floriani.
I think that's the point or with whatever software you have, I'm sure it'll be the same type of thing, you'll have a shape and then you'll turn it into embroidery. but you know, the question is and here, bring me back to the screen again, like maybe halfway or something, but when it's a white fabric like this, can you have the brown fabric underneath where it is? the ear or do you need to trim it? and then there are things to consider, it's not just oh, I have a shape and I'm going to apply it, it could be, and that's great if all you're making is a heart and you're going to put a border on it that's easy to do, but if you're going to put um, you know, like the dog, then there's a little bit more consideration, so notice there are all these different types of cover stitches and this one is satin.
The dog has a satin cover stitch, which is a stitch that you know, is very typical. To use the double appliqué heart, it has an Edge motif, you know, something a little more elegant and of course there are blanket edges, so I thought about what we could do before we go back to the software and so I get halfway there for one second. I just want to explain the photos, so there are two ways to make an app. Two main forms. If I said that, would you know what I mean? TRUE? If I said there were two ways to make an app, which one would you use? they're like what form do I use and when I actually ask you Hi Kimberly, it's nice to see you there today, it's a good topic, right?
What I'm asking you is: do you pre-cut the appliqué or do you make it? cut the applique while you're sewing it, um and it's not that either one is better, uh, it's just that if you know which way you're doing it, sometimes you can do things to make the embroidery design perfect your way . I like to do it and it depends on what you are applying. What is the fabric you are going to make your applique with? In other words, are you applying polar fleas? Know? Know? Thick patch material. Is it just a fine? cotton fabric or is it organza, you know what you're attaching and because it's, um, the good news is that with the use of your software you can make adjustments to the way the application, so that's what the little messages or today's tips I guess and then like I said, I wanted to share with everyone, these are the ones that I didn't find in as many as I could find in Flor and it was like hundreds and hundreds and hundreds, these were the ones that I felt were popular. of hand appliqué stitches that didn't exist there, so I created them and I'm sharing them so anyone can get them, not just members of my classes because there are a lot of things that I share with members of my classes, but Today, what I'm saying is we're just going to go through the photographs, so there are two shapes and the heart that I cut out during sewing, you know, and I cut it out during sewing, the real benefit would be, I think, the lack of time for proper preparation. only if you already have the embroidery design you can start stitching in place, you know, it usually has a placement line, you lay the fabric on top, you sew that line as a kind of gain and then you cut it out with the scissors and then the you place a cover stitch on top and you can choose from all the different types of cover stitches, right?
Trevor will show you some cover stitches, well you know you can make a blanket with satin stitches. Edge m teeedges, um, but if you make a pre-cut trim instead ofan embellishment while sewing the pre-cut applique, the benefit is that you can make really complex shapes and use a cutting

machine

to cut it, it could be a matter of efficiency, maybe you run. You have a multi-head embroidery

machine

and you want to minimize the amount of time your machine is stopped, so you have the 12 you know circles ready to do the PR PR cut and when the machine stops you glue them together and make the machine works properly again. so in productivity, a pre-cut is preferred, but at home many times, especially if you are designing them yourself, the extra time to make the template is easy to make a cut-out during sewing, that said some people have problems with the trim, you know not everyone is good with a pair of scissors and not everyone is comfortable letting you know how to do it, so there are things I can help you with this, like how to offset your edge to give you more coverage. and also, so, I don't care which direction you want to precut it, no problem, it's easy to do or trim the edge, sewing is also easy to do, but it's a choice, so, the first one, the heart, just tell you I will show it. the photos and then we'll go into my software and I'll show you a little bit how to set it up.
The heart photos maybe we'll make them a little bit B. Now they'll start with a stitch placement line. It does not matter at this point which direction you are going to go, in fact the embroidery design is the same, it does not have to change, you can go in any direction with the same embroidery design because this is an embellishment during sewing of the applique, but it could be completely pre-cut because if it were pre-cut at this stage when the machine sews the place line, I would just be gluing my pre-cut appliqué shape on later, but instead of gluing it, I'm going to place a piece of fabric on top and sew a stitch that is the corresponding stitch of the heart shape and then trim around it to trim it and trim as close as possible so it looks like this when it's done right, just trim along the edge of your run.
I usually set this up to do a double run, you know, the second color. I'll do a single run for the first color, you only need a single run, but for the second color. I'll do a double run that way, it's easier to trim uh now um oh here let me get rid of that. I'll be sorry my phone is choking and I forgot to tell it not to bother me while I was recording so um Yeah basically it's trimmed nice and closed and then a cover stitch is sewn around the outside and in this case I've used a known decorative stitch as a motif stitch and it is like a diamond that is placed on my applied fabric and then removed.
I like that you know it's a little bit more forgiving than the blanket, uh e Stitch, because it goes on both sides of Sid, so it gives him a little bit of coverage, it has a width, the Edge blanket, well, so if there was any. the green fabric is not trimmed perfectly, it shows well, so it's a little easier with the double sided type of motifs, you know, that says it really recreates the hand and I think we want those edges of the blanket, That's one of the looks. that's what we're really looking for, so I'm not discouraging it, I'm just pointing out that it makes it a little more challenging, that's all, um, here's the second color, so now, making a sick color, you can remove it if you want , you can have it.
I could have removed the green fabric on the inside of this, it's a choice okay, so if you're doing a layered applique, if you're going to see the fabric, that would definitely be a reason to remove it if it's only partial like the puppy . dog that I showed you, that would be another reason, so I'm going to show you how to do what we call removing overlaps with an appliqué, you know, and you can easily cut out the parts that are underneath, but here we have the second one. color so you just sew, you lay the fabric on top, you sew the running stitch again and then you trim it, so that's your process for trimming during sewing the applique and then like I said you have the option to choose from all kinds of borders , except embroidery.
The design could be exactly the same this time, uh, it's going to be a butterfly, but the idea is to pre-cut the fabric and in this case I used my brother's scanon cut. Mine isn't the latest but it still works just as well and, um, when? you cut fabric and I'm not going to do today's video on how to cut fabric, maybe I'll do one, but I know there are a lot of great ones um, but with that being said, the main thing is that you have to prepare the fabric well and I. Use the Floriani Wonder applique, that's my favorite product.
I also use the quilter. Select Appley Stick. Those are two products that are very similar. Can you bring me on half screen? Nick. What I mean by that is you fuse it with the fabric and then. it has wax paper that peels off, so what you fused onto the fabric is actually stabilizer, but it's a permanent bond, it's like you're adding a very thin layer of stabilizer to your application, so here's the difference, the wonder of the applique. It is the stronger of the two, so if your applique is going to have a lot of embroidery on top, it is good to add that applique layer inside the applique fabric.
Either way, you need to have a little fabric prep to get it to look good. able to cut it by machine because the machine when you cut it with that little kind of knife that moves over the little rug, um, you know that the corners are going to start to catch and bunch up if the fabric hasn't been primed with something to make it stay and hold its shape, so even if you're not embroidering much, you still need to use a fabric prep, so if I'm not embroidering on top, it will just be quilting. and they are very light blanket stitches and I want to do the least amount of weight for the fabric that I appliqué on, just the lightest amount is what we call quilter's Select Appley stick and that's what comes like I bought it in kind of a box like , remember the old freezer paper, you get the big box size, uh, because if you're doing a lot of machine applications, it comes in the big size, what I'm saying, so you can get them in small packages, just show your I don't know, no samples, but smaller sizes, um, but if you're doing a lot, you can also get them in budget sizes, that's all I'm saying, so I'm not going to tell you about buying any of that.
You will visit your local quilt store and ask about the quilter's selection or you will visit your local embroidery store and ask about the Floriani um Wonder embroidery appliqué, either way you need to prepare the fabric to be able to do it. image, so go ahead and bring me back to Nick again and then what I'm saying is that when you preset, now your pieces are ready, they're cut out and very small, intricate pieces are possible. Very small applique pieces. They are possible and the best part is that when you remove the wax paper, not only does it stabilize for cutting, it is sticky and that is the incredible thing because when you stick it, notice that in the next image there is the Run Stitch, which is the first one.
The color of my design remains the same, it is a throw. Sewing, the machine stopped. I could have put a big piece of fabric on top and sewn on the next color, but instead I glue the fabric down and when I sew on the next color, the tack finishes. down the fabric and then sew the cover so you can see exactly how my cut out piece matches up with those running stitches and that's the idea of a precut Al um is that you cut it, glue it on and then you finish the embroidery so to me it's like you can go either way, I don't care, uh preut or um no, but okay, if I go back to the embroidery software and pull up the double applique heart, you can see what I am. speaking of the M, the software will start with a Stitch run and the machine will stop, actually, here, let's do this.
I'm going to start with a fresh new page and start with a new piece of art that could be. Any artwork you want or have is fine, so I'll make the bear here or something, but if you can draw the right shape, I'll show you how you can do it yourself, that's what I do. I'm saying if you don't have a shape yet but you need a shape, this is how it works when you have an artwork shape, look to the right, it says artwork, when I click on said artwork and scroll down to the bottom . and I click on the word applique boom, it's already a machine embroidery applique design.
I'm going to activate this, by the way, it has nothing to do with floriani, but I'm going to activate a little yellow ring that surrounds my cursor. It will help me to talk like this so um notice if I click and simulate sewing the first color is a running stitch and then there is a color change and that's when you place that fabric down if it's a pre-cut glue it on right on top of this, if it's not a precut, then you could put a large fabric around it, you know, a little piece a little bit bigger than your placement line, so the second color now, when the machine stops, it does a border now I have an applique design with a right click.
I can just click on a shape, you know, and here let's make one. I'll get out my old pencil and try the old freehand tool and see if I can. Do it, I'm so good that I can draw a heart, not really, but I can select that heart now. I didn't close my shape, so if I make it as an applique now it will be an open applique, does that make sense? it doesn't have a I left an area open like I just drew if you say no I want it completely close there's a close button right I can say no no that's closed but the point is if you draw a line you know you take your artwork and you draw a line and you leave part of it disconnected when you select that artwork and you click on this applique button and it makes those colors stop one, two, and three, don't you know, fill the space in white is what I'm saying, you can do it, if you want, you'll tell it to close, you know, and then it will close the gap, so to speak, so I know I'm not very good at drawing.
I may have been digitizing for 40 years, guys, but I still need something to track. You know I'm pretty good at tracing and I really know a lot about how to do embroidery, but well, here's the thing and this is the magic of is the properties because I clicked and I got applique, but remember I said I like that second color, the which goes around the second. I like to do a double roll. You know, I find that when I crop with a single run, I sometimes crop too. close and run The stitch breaks and it can unravel and you know I'm worried about it coming undone so I like to select my applique and here in the properties box there's a place where I can control the tack line down so I can make It a double run and now instead of going around once it will go around twice so it will go around for the location only once but then when it does the second time it will go around and then once it gets there to the house, oh. it goes around again so it does a double run and then the border and for the Border, when I select that here there is an option that includes a base, so now when I sew it before the Border color is sewn, I'll get a little bit more of a Set Layer, you know, that kind of zigzag back and forth and all that, there's a lot of important adjustments you can make here, so the easiest ones are: Do you want to include the base?
Yes or no. to include a finish, no, so if I uncheck them and click Apply, I just have the first two colors, the location line and the double run apply, you know, trim around the line if you want to call it that if you're making a prior application notice. that the second line moves in just a little bit, that's the default, it's set up that way to help you, when you paste your app it will be placed right inside it if you don't want it there. you can go into your properties and change it, you know, if it's something, if you want it further in, then you would make the offset bigger, so look here where I made it a double run, look, it has an offset of half a millimeter, well if I make it a full millimeter then that would make it more inward or if I make that zero then that would leave it right at the top of the line, you can choose, that's my point, it's very easy to change once you understand that you know you need a shape and once you choose your shape, you have these settings, and if you have your favorite settings, you can even copy and paste them, you know, once you set them all in one shape, if there's a lot. you can right click and go to copy the settings right and then get your next form and just paste the settings, you already know and it will be as easy as that, so what?
Many ideas arise, but one is good, what if I am? doing a pre-cut appliqué, but I'm going to do a satin finish like that, so maybe when I strike it down instead of that zero offset double run set, maybe I'll do a zigzag, so imagine now how I've changed. So sew the first color, stop, now you glue the bear and before the cover, sew it in a zigzag to fix it in place, so my idea here is that you have glued the bear and it goes on the inside. side of the fabric and the outside just to make sure it's stitched, it doesn't matter, it's up to you, do you want a stitched thread or do you want a zigzag thread?
You already know it, orWhat you would have to do is do anything like, for example, resize it and that will be lost, right? Oh what happened? All my changes, well, you regenerated Trev points, so you lost them. Oh, okay, I didn't want to lose them, press Undo. You can undo them, but, if you never want to lose them, if you want to make sure of them in some way, don't do it. get lost, you didn't realize or something, what you can do is right click and say to keep this color as stitches and that will make it no longer a motif, you won't be able to change it from six to seven anymore, but you will.
You won't lose your changes, you know, if you love it, yes, yes, yes, everything is perfect and you say no, I just want no, I want to modify it and then save it, go ahead and keep it as stitches and then you can do all the edits of stitches you want and they will never be lost and yes, I said a lot today, wow, that's a lot, Nick, we've been working for an hour and I usually go for about 45, but I hope you enjoyed today's presentation. Don't forget to come and get the free font of the week because every Friday is a free font.
Every Friday, you know, at lunchtime we post a new free font on the Sunset Stitches website. What I can do is thank Nick for helping me with the digitization. I thought this one was cool. Nick, the birdie bits, kind of a throwback to the old 16th hole. This is a kid who grew up with a lot. games and he knows all about 16 bit games and all that kind of pixelated look, so embroidery bits, by the way, I said this in the I. This is totally off topic. Can you see where the word Sunset the E has been split in the middle, but not at the top, just at the bottom and on the word, the embroidery bits are not, so I used the settings, so which is a correct setup, if you know Floriani software, when you get this font, turn on the splits, but don't do them randomly. the divisions are divided in the middle, so instead of getting a random division, you usually get a very defined division, so when you use ra a division in the middle, you can take this font and use it very large like this with the middle, so if you know what I mean Flor, any software, you write your font and then you start making it an inch, now that you did it 2 Ines, oh, okay, but there are a couple of points where the stitches become very long and then you turn on.
Your divisions are correct, you leave it satin but it only divides the long parts and at that point in this one, because it's kind of a straight block font and uh like cubic type that looks cool, the random division. kind of fingers together and makes the division smooth the middle division makes all the divisions in L exactly the same point so you get and that's how I was able to make the word Sunset as big as I was uh and without changing the font and it's still a satin Stitch okay boy lots of talk and lots of talk from Trevor today thanks Carol, says good presentation, I really appreciate you too and Sandy, yeah look at the previous shows, they've been great every Friday.
Lastly, they know a little bit while we're on source 12 anyway, so we've been growing as we do. I have news that we have something new coming out soon, so it's great to see everyone.
