God's blessing during the pandemic should show you that even though the world is slowing down and the world is being hindered by so many people. Different things, the kingdom of God never needs to be hindered by what is happening in this world. Amen, yeah, God drives the car and he's got a big gas pedal and he just has his foot on it and he's like, who's coming with me? and uh, we. We are experiencing that too. We just launched another campus in December in the city of Kitchener in a less accessible part of the city and we just sent a launch team there and we are sending capital and raising capital for that so we can continue.
Just be light and be out in the community and we're so excited. It is an honor for me to be here. Thank you so much for allowing me the privilege of coming and sharing the word of God with you today. Single Message I want to talk to you this morning about being fully human. Could we say that together we say completely human? About a month ago I felt the spirit really confirm some things in my heart about this as I watched society as I watched our media. as I watched how people engage in the world and respond to different things feeling this call to become fully human again in our own eyes and also in the eyes of God.
I heard someone say many years ago that the greatest longing of the human heart is to be fully known and completely loved and if you can find people in your life who can know you completely and despite your vulnerabilities and shadows and weaknesses and shortcomings and mistakes and black eyes in his story if you can be Fully Known and Fully Loved, go ahead and maintain those relationships in your life because they are some of the most meaningful relationships that God will bless you with, but the problem is that in today's world it seems that the more we are known, easier.
It is up to us to be labeled to characterize ourselves as something, we are no longer someone, but when someone discovers something about us that is different, that is unique, maybe it is offensive in their eyes or they do not understand that part of us, our culture. our heritage our history our values our belief system the way we engage in this world even the way we look at faith how many of you know there are enough divisions even in the camp of the church of christ it is easy for us not to see In the eyes, the more someone knows you, the easier it is for them to label you, characterize you as something and instead of being someone you now become something in their eyes and that tends to be something negative and then, when they characterize us, when we tag, it's much easier for us to be canceled, right?
Someone can so easily write us off for the way we engage in the world, the way we see it, the way we hold on to specific values, even in faith. Bring your faith to the workplace and find that you embrace values of righteousness that will become offensive to some people and, as a result, you may be labeled, characterized, and eventually canceled. As a result, this happens in so many different areas of your life. and it's heartbreaking for me, which is why this message today comes back to this idea of being fully human we are not just things that canbeing labeled, characterized and canceled we are living souls we are sons and daughters in the eyes of god through a spirit of sonship for which we cry abba father daddy daddy and we have a father in heaven who looks at us with great love and great concern and great compassion when I look at the world and maybe when you look out too I probably find a couple of the biggest problems I've seen arise in the last two years and it is this: people seem to be more afraid of others than we have seen in our lifetime and people seem to be angrier at each other than we've ever seen in our lifetime, let's talk about this for a minute.
In fact, I felt convinced of this because I have lived this. Sometimes, you know, when you go to the supermarket and you're walking down the aisle and someone is walking the wrong way and everything inside you wants to yell at you. Don't you see the arrow sticker on the floor that says to proceed in this direction and someone dares to pass their cart by yours or if it's a smaller grocery store maybe you have something downtown here and there's not a lot of space and you know, literally yesterday at the supermarket I saw this happen. I was walking to the cars, picking up some things for my wife and walking down and I saw someone walking towards me and then this scared look.
It appeared in their faces and they said, "Oh no, what am I going to do?" I can't even get close to this guy so he literally stopped walking towards me and pulled out his hall card so I could get out and of course in a polite way I said thank you but how does that make people feel like Would we be so afraid to even be less than two meters away? Now I'm not here to belittle the social distancing rules, I'm just saying as A result of these last two years is that we are afraid to touch, we are afraid to talk, we are afraid to approach people because they pose a threat to our health, such Maybe we are immunocompromised, maybe we have fought cancer.
In the past, maybe the idea of coveting makes us very afraid, so we stay home or stay away from people and it's always this and this wasn't like that even two years ago and we're observing how people are. They are more and more afraid of others than ever and this is not the heart of God, it is dehumanizing, we are also seeing it, people are more afraid of each other than ever and they are getting more angry with each other than ever before, don Don't believe me, just go to any social media platform and strike up a conversation about politics, government, masks, vaccines or anything polarizing and you will absolutely see a ton of love, joy, peace, unity and harmony.
No amen, raise your hand if you know what I'm talking about, people pointing fingers at each other through the keyboard, characterizing demeaning, slurs, using harsh language, even vulgar language, insults, why, because these other people just believe in something different, we see it on the roads we see it in the parking lots. I don't know if the drivers in Toronto are the same as in the Cambridge and Waterloo region, but I have literally seen fist fights in parking lots over an empty spot on Christmas. I'm like, Lord have mercy, I'm just going to go home and shop online.
I can't stand this road closure, all this stuff and all it seems to take is one little trigger and people just explode into these visceral tantrums of anger. to shout to hate is to dehumanize what it means to dehumanize someone it means to rob them of their human qualities it means to prevent them from things like human dignity, human love, human identity and human compassion and we do this more and more than ever by being afraid of others who might be different us in one category or another and we do it by being angrier at others than ever before and today you may have been a victim of that dehumanization that someone else has inflicted upon you and today I want to share the love and grace of the gospel of Jesus to touch your heart and remind you today that you are fully human.
Can you just look at your neighbor and tell him that you are completely human for your entire life? weaknesses and defects you still are because the love of the father today points towards you in immeasurable ways today I want to talk to you about living differently I want to talk to you about treating ourselves as fully human and not only our brothers and sisters in the body of Christ, but all in this world as fully human, there are a couple of stories in the gospels that point us to the idea that this type of behavior is not new to us in the year

2022

.
It is an ancient behavior that we return to. in the gospels and you can see that, whether it was the religious elites or just society itself, they were dehumanizing others out of mutual fear, they were dehumanizing others out of a spirit of entitlement or judgment, they were dehumanizing others for feeling and acting superior to another person because of their status in society we have a lot to learn I think today about being fully human the first story is found in luke chapter five and it is a story about a man who was sick and he was sick with a disease which we don't really understand much about today because it has practically been eradicated from society.
There are some small pockets in the world where people still struggle with something called leprosy, but for the most part this disease has been conquered, but in the time of Luke chapter 5 of the gospels when they happened and when they were written leprosy was a diagnosis fatal if the priest gave you the word that you were impure with leprosy, it was not just going to the pharmacy and getting a prescription and You would feel better in a week it would change your life you would be separated from your spouse from your parents from your children from your friends of the faith family of the entire city you would actually be kicked out of the city and you would be They were told to go live in what they would call leper colonies and some historians would say they would even literally put a bell around their neck, so that if they ever approached people who did not have leprosy, this bell as they walked would ring as an alert and a signal to them saying stay away talk about social distancing no one knew about social distancing like the lepers of that day and we read in luke 5 that Jesus is doing his thing, he's ministering and the crowds follow him and it says in Luke 5 that this leper actually came to Jesus, he came to Jesus, which was a big no-no, it's like walking down the wrong path to the supermarket when You see the arrows on the ground, it's like brushing against as many people as you want at the airport. and not caring is like walking anywhere with them, I mean I'm telling you it was the wrong thing to do and everyone present would have been mortified and he came to Jesus with the request and Jesus asked him what do you want him to do. you and the answer was obvious, true, the answer was healing, but imagine how everyone around at this time would have been prone to dehumanize this leper for fear of contracting the very contagious disease that he had.
Get him out of here, we don't want to. To get sick we don't want leprosy. What is this man who left this guy among friends? We don't see this behavior from Jesus, instead we see him operating out of deep compassion, deep love, brokenness for this man and it's interesting to me. I want to point out to you today the way Jesus really healed heaven because when you read the gospels many times Jesus could say a word of healing. Have you ever read any of these stories before? Not to me if you know what I'm talking about that, now you are with me, just say the word Jesus and my daughter will be healed.
Just Jesus speaking a word of healing and the disease, the disease breaks. Jesus with the spoken word commanding Lazarus to literally conquer. death and to get out of this cave friends it would have been very easy for Jesus to heal this man with his spoken word but notice that he did not realize the way Jesus healed him he crouched down and reached out his hand and reached out his hand and touched this man now, according to the law, this would have made Jesus unclean, there were rules in place that told Jesus don't you dare touch this guy because hey, you could die from this disease or at least be you.
I will be unclean and cast out of the city, but Jesus took these rules and set them aside and out of compassion not only healed this man but he touched him. Why do I think he touched this man to make him fully human again? Now none of us today may be affected by leprosy, but there may be something in our life that has caused others to be afraid of us or that makes us feel like there is no place for us in the house of God and I am here to let you know. today that the heart of compassion that Jesus had towards that man on that day in Luke 5 is still the same today and he wants to extend that same compassion to you and he wants to surround you with this love and he wants you to find it and not feel it in a moment of the day and not one ounce in your body that you are not fully human, that you are not worthy of his love, his grace and his salvation, and I think we must learn from this and we must be careful today.
In our time, whether we ourselves have been dehumanized or perhaps we have engaged in that type of activity to dehumanize others to remember the heart of our savior that says no, we are going to reach out and we are going to touch people a and again. Let's remind them that they are completely human in their eyes. There is another story in the gospels where people were dehumanizing someone to take away their rights and this is Zacchaeus and you will find it in Luke chapter 18. And this is totally different. Because Zacchaeus had a lot of money, he was rich, he was a tax collector, but everyone hated him and he says that Jesus was in Jericho and he was teaching, he was doing his things and many crowds followed him and Zacchaeus found out and wanted to know who Jesus was, so he says he ran ahead of the crowd and climbed a sycamore tree and just hung out and waited like he was hunting deer, you just climb a tree and wait, do I have any? hunters in the room someone I wasn't sure about in Toronto maybe I shouldn't tell you I'm a hunter anyway I want you to love me so here's Zacchaeus hanging on a tree waiting for me to arrive and Jesus finally shows up Jesus looks up at Zacchaeus in the tree he says hey friend, I'll see you up there, come down, I need to stay at your house today and the moment Jesus said that it upset everyone else, they were upset in the religious elite, he says they started complaining. and murmur you know what the word complain means and the words complain and murmur just means to complain quietly saying I can't believe I can't believe the pastor would do that I can't believe Jesus would do it and why would he do it he brought why would he go to a sinner's house and in doing so they were dehumanizing Zacchaeus because of their spirit of entitlement in other words they were saying we deserve a lot more Jesus time than he does, he actually doesn't deserve any Jesus time at all and I think by doing this and of all the people that jesus could have chosen to hang out with and go to their house and break bread and bring them salvation, he chose the one who would upset everyone else and make them feel upset and entitled and in doing so, He exposed that right and that teaches us today that the moment we even entertain the idea that we have more right to Jesus than any other person on the face of this earth, we are operating on that same right and in doing so we are dehumanizing the same people. to whom Jesus wants to reach what happened when he went to Zacchaeus' house changed his life he said that salvation has come to this house why because Zacchaeus changed his mind and says look 'I'm going to restore all those who have made me damage and I am going to double it and I am going to exceed the generosity.
I'm going to fix this because he experienced what it felt like to be fully human again through the words and works of Jesus. I wonder if anyone here today thirsts for that same experience. I come with good news to let you know that no matter who acted in a spirit of entitlement to exclude you from the gospel of grace, the heart of Jesus will echo and resonate in this place today and in your heart to let you know that in His eyes you are completely human, you are completely worthy of his grace, his mercy and his love.
Another story that I will touch on very quickly exposes another. activity of dehumanizing and is done in a spirit of judgment by judging another person based on what he has done or has not done. This is found in John chapter 8. Jesus was actually teaching in the temple, so it is one thing for him. being on the streets of the city and going out with the common people, now he is in the church, he is in the same place where the word of God is read and the presence of God must be there and he says that while he is in front teaching a group of religious The elite people, scribes and Pharisees had gone and found a woman who was caught in adultery and they dragged her out of that dirty moment and dragged her to the temple and dragged her in front of all those who were listening to Jesus and They threw it on the floor and said Jesus, we just caught this woman in adultery and you know what I always think when they say this, I'm like I wish I was there at that moment.
Can I tell you why today? Because I wanted to ask you how you did it. Do you know where she would be committing adultery, howDid you know where his address is? maybe you yourself have it on speed dial and knew exactly where to go look for it. Those are only possible, by the way, that is only part of my own interpretation, but nevertheless, they drag it to dehumanize it with a huge spirit of judgment. Can you believe this disgusting woman? Jesus, we just caught her in the act, she still smells like that and the law of Moses says we should all pick up stones and she should be executed like us religious people and in our own spirit of judgment we would throw these stones and kill her.
You know what Jesus' response was. If you are familiar with the story of John 8, you know exactly what it is. He leans in and begins. riding on the ground and then he looks at them and says, "Okay, maybe whichever of you is without sin, go ahead and throw that stone and I can probably see all of you at that moment going well, well, it's not me, I want say, I know what." I did it last weekend and well, it's definitely not me, I mean, I know what I was thinking this morning and there, one by one, all of her accusers just walk away and then Jesus looks at this woman and makes her completely human again and say where all the shackles of your accusers are and share these powerful words. with it I do not condemn you either, that the heart of our savior Jesus echoes and resonates in this moment today that Jesus has not set out to condemn people in their sin, he set out to change them, heal them, minister to them, offer them grace and mercy and make them completely human again, for very scandalous that sin is, and this truth is available for us to take advantage of today if anyone has ever dehumanized you based on something you did that might have offended God or something you didn't do. it could have made him angry with you and they hold it over you like a dark cloud and I'm just here to tell you today that Jesus wants to scatter your accusers and offer you grace again and tell you, go and sin no more.
Amen, can we just? give her an offering of praise so we should be grateful for the grace and mercy she offers us and in doing so makes us fully human again. The last story is found in Luke chapter 19. And I apologize for going around in circles because I don't normally do this, I normally stay in one text, but I wanted to almost skip different moments in the gospel and see and show how this behavior hasn't really changed. in Luke 19, now that we have this moment and they We're back in Jericho again and like a blind man and there's a crowd and Jesus is ministering and walking and there's a crowd following him and the blind man hears Jesus coming and he's on the ground like If you were every day begging for provision, not being able to see just holding out your hands please someone give me money or bread or just something so I can live another day and then you hear about Jesus and you're on the ground and you start screaming son of David, have mercy on me and Do you know what all the people around Jesus who were so happy that he was there ministering said to this blind man on the road?
They looked down on him and dehumanized him out of a spirit of superiority. Shut your mouth, boy, Jesus doesn't have one. time for you son of david have mercy have mercy on me he shouted more shut your mouth you don't deserve jesus we are better than you he is here for us not for you now get lost before he gets offended and you distract him with all your shouting but i just need mercy mercy I need mercy and when a broken human being authentically cries out for mercy, they will get Jesus' attention much more than the religious elite who try to silence this guy because of his superiority and Jesus went to him, you know, the story was what do you want, what?
What can I do for you? I just want mercy and this man who was dehumanized by all these other onlookers telling him that he had no place to cry out to Jesus. Jesus reached down and touched this. man and he healed him and in doing so he made him fully human again. Throughout the gospels, we see this story over and over again, we see broken and needy people, we see this barrier of many times religious people trying to exclude them. to silence them, try to judge them, even kill them, and then we see Jesus finding his way around this barrier by making people again and again fully human and I dare say today that we may actually act more like Jesus. when we do the same and when we take our eyes and we take our ears and through the direction of the holy spirit we go looking for people in this world who have been dehumanized and we fulfill what the writer of Hebrews said in chapter 12 this incredible command listen to this friends Take care that no one loses the grace of God and that we find those who are abandoned we will find those who are excluded we will find those who are silenced we will find those who are judged and instead of participating in all this dehumanizing behavior just like Jesus He will bend down and touch them and bless them and speak words of life and grace and love over them and, in doing so, He will extend the kingdom of Jesus to them and make them fully human.
Again, amen, can we offer some praise to God for this opportunity we have to do this today? Let's put ourselves in this place. My time is almost up. I want to close in prayer very specifically in two ways today, number one, I realized in a room like this there could be many people who have been victims of some type of dehumanizing behavior and you have felt the pain of being neglected, excluded, silenced. or judged in some way. I just want to pray that you do not miss out on God's grace today and for the rest of us, I would pray that we would receive this holy task today of acting in a countercultural way in this world and, through the love and light of Jesus, working Through our lives, we begin to know what it is like. that others may feel fully human again, let us pray father in the name of Jesus, I thank you today that your arm is not too short to save and your ear is not too dull to listen, I thank you that even the weakest and weakest cry out today for mercy.
It's so loud in your ears and in your heart, God, that you will come running and running to the scene and you can do it now. For those who only need grace and mercy, they need to know that they are completely known and loved by you. God can This will be a powerful spiritual encounter with your grace and your love today God, I pray for the rest of us as we engage in this world, that we will not only accept this holy task but operate in it and fulfill it, God, may let's take care of It's that no one, no one would lose the grace of God if there were tendencies or behaviors in our lives that could dehumanize others, who look different than us, who sound different than us, who have a different vaccination status or vision different policy or something different helps us to end all that behavior and operate with a kingdom mentality, making everyone human again for the glory of God, we pray in the name of Jesus, amen, amen, praise God, if everyone Could you sit down, let's say goodbye to the power, thank you.
