Hello, my name is Robert, I come to you as a car enthusiast who has maintained and repaired my vehicles for over 30 years. I have had a car that lasts over 400,000 miles. The car I currently drive has over 220,000 miles on it. It's a 95 model so I hope you can benefit from the information I share with you thanks for tuning in I'm about to do a

transmission

service

on the Volvo 850 it's not recommended that these front wheel drive Volvos have the

transmission

service

but after years and years and many miles of transmission

fluid

only uses its capacity to properly lubricate the transmission and keep it in good condition.

If you service these transmissions, they can last as long as the car. I currently have 225k miles on it, but when I bought the car. at 189 the transmission

fluid

looked like dirty pond water and didn't seem to have the consistency of canned transmission fluid and the transmission was bad so they put me in a transmission with a used one and

change

d the fluid in mine every twenty-five thousand. miles, there are two ways to do this process and it seems to have good results. The number one way is to drain, just let the transmission drain from the drain plug and then fill it back up which is usually three and a half quarts of fluid so you can measure it, if you want you can check the level but I'll just drain it three and a half quarters.

The other way is to connect some type of vacuum hose to your radiator because your transmission cools through the radiator and let it pump the fluid out of the transmission while you add it back, that will replace all the fluid at once, like this The way I do it, you get three and a half quarts at a time and the system retains about eight quarts, so the way I do it, half the liquid is replaced. I drive 50 to 100 miles, then drain it and fill it again to get another half of the fluid out. I put the plug back in the drain and drive another 50 to 100 miles and then do a last third of drain and fill, which gets about half the fluid, so in that two or three hundred miles of driving I can replace, depending my calculations, eighty-seven percent of the transmission fluid, the transmission is not surprised to have the old one. dirty fluid there to fresh new fluid, which can be a problem with older cars, so I've done it twice already, driven the cars 50 to 100 miles at different times, so this will be my last boot camp in my broadcast. tools and supplies that transmission service used to make.

I have the cat ramps. I drive the car so I can get under it. I got the tray that I catch the fluid with. I just use the usual cheap transmission fluid I get from Walmart it's dextran three Makemake brand I use a t25 to remove the throttle body cover cap. I use a long narrow funnel because you have to feel the transmission through the transmission dipstick tube and that's hard to do unless you have that long narrow funnel. I use a new crush washer for the transmission bolt drain bolt when I do the final drain and fill it.

I use a pad to crawl on and the slab to crawl under the vehicle. I use a rag to clean things up and the wrench that takes that bolt. Outside of the transmission the drain plug bolt is a number 15 or 16 case or you can use 24 millimeters after lifting the car or ramps you crawl under the car and find the transmission drain plug bolt you will see the oil pan right towards On the driver's side, you'll see the transmission drain plug, right there, right in front of that transmission drain plug, is the transmission torque bracket, so you can follow that back and put that 24 millimeter boxing wrench or a 15-sixteenths boxing wrench on that turn. clockwise to remove it and drain the fluid while draining the transmission.
You can go ahead and take a look at the drain plug. The drain plug has a magnet and you can see what type of buildup is on the magnet. build up the felt and metal particles from the transmission to determine how much you have inside your transmission by looking at the drain plug and then go ahead and clean it, put a new gasket in when you're doing your last drain and fill and put the bolt back in and tighten it, It's not a torque value, but it can be like 18 foot-pounds. Make sure you don't remove the bottle when putting it back in an attempt to add exactly three and a half quarts after draining, what I usually do is take a 16 ounce bottle of clear water and pour 16 ounces into it.
A quart is 32 ounces, so 1/2 quart is 16 ounces, so I take half a quart of the drain. gallon bottle and then pour the rest of the transmission fluid into the transmitter. Okay, checking the transmission and filling it is a little complicated. When you look at the turbo inlet pipe, you see the transmission dipstick down there and you have this throttle body cover. So you take out the t25, you take the throttle body cover off, then you'll be able to have better access to the transmission dipstick, you take it out and that's where you have to fill the transmission, so you have to have that narrow funnel to get it down there. and fill it up, it takes the fluid very slowly, so be patient, okay, I put my funnel in there with a dipstick, the hole is and I'm going to go ahead and pour this three and a half quarts into the transmission, remember it's slow. complicated process if you try to go too fast, so let it drip into the funnel and you probably won't dirty the dipstick tube.
Well, after you've gotten all the transmission fluid in there, go ahead and clean up the mess. Remove the funnel and put the dipstick back in, make sure it's all the way in now if you want to go ahead and check that the transmission has been serviced correctly, it's a little tricky to check the transmission on these cars, you just can't put the dipstick in , take it out and check the fluid level, so let me go ahead and explain to you how to

change

how to check the transmission fluid correctly. It's okay, after repairing the transmission, if you want to check the fluid level to make sure it is at the proper level. quantity there the instructions are in the owner's manual but it's a little complicated you have a dipstick that comes out there is a dipstick it has a cold side and a hot side the best way and the only correct way to check these transmission fluid levels is to get in the car, drive the car approximately thirty minutes into your 30 minute trip, you stop on a level surface, on that level surface, what you are going to do next is turn the gear shift slowly in each gear, What I normally do is I count to five, put it in park, count to five, put it in reverse, count to five, put it in neutral, count to five, and so on, after returning to park, you leave the car idle and leave it. continue running in park for two minutes while still running, take out the dipstick, clean the dipstick with a lint-free cloth, put the dipstick back in, pull it out, look at the hot side and make sure it is between the minimum and maximum mark if it is between the minimum and maximum mark just leave it there you have a good level if it is below the minimum mark add a little I wouldn't add more than eight ounces at a time so it can only be four ounces under , but you want it to be between the minimum and maximum mark, don't stress about putting it on the maximum mark, as long as this is between and again, all that information is in the owner's manual.
Okay, I have the transmission dipstick out. and as you can see on the tip it says charcoal and on the other side it says hot, so you want to know if you're looking at the cold or hot side of the dipstick, there's the one that says hot, the other one. The side says cold down there to lean and when you notice the cold has a wider range then the hot side does it when you check the fluid level after you've cycled it through the shifters and all the gears you want to make sure between that it is between the minimum and maximum marks on the attractive side, if you think this information was beneficial, please like and share it with your friends on social networks, go ahead and subscribe to my page to receive notifications of future videos that I publish.
