I assume you have a map of the countryside here in your hand. I have a map, uh, but it's easier to get papers out here. Let's show you real quick, okay, there's a couple. Um, big obstacles that you had this morning, number one is this hill and the transition, going up it with wire, so we'll start from the bottom, about at the tree line, there will be a uh, the beginning of the hill. So you can look for some underground work there to have them produce some kind of mechanism that will hold the pole down while the cable tries to pull it up, so they will come and break over this hill.

More Interesting Facts About,

I will be interested. in the post selection and how you choose to navigate, we will reach the flat, so in this lane you will reach this flag and put a 30 degree curve in the fence, you may see some underground work. here you say you may see another brace you may see a thin pole so this is another way the contestants can differentiate themselves and then we'll end up about 24 feet from that curve here from this ending point there will be a four foot door that you see ready, yes, and then we will enter into what I anticipate will be something that divides the greatest number of hairs and defines the team, which is an inside corner of the tables.

I got you, it's going to be a 16 foot panel with an inside corner here and another 16 foot panel of boards and that's where the competition will stop this is where we go there will be a corner right here it's hard to imagine you'll see it later that corner this It's all a wooden fence the gate will be right there, okay, and we'll walk down here, there's a slight depression here, so the ground dips here and then it goes over this hump which is to prevent washing out, it's a kind of swamp and if you go all the way to the end of this hill you are going to see this in this full video, you are going to see it.

I have to negotiate another drop, so it goes down like this and it goes up there at the end, these guys. They are judged first on safety, they are also judged on efficiency, efficiency, fit and finish, how good the fence looks and it is a huge challenge to do all of this in an eight hour, eight hour day, Yes, I don't anticipate everyone going. so we can finish, yeah, yeah, so guys, start cheering them on, give me your best guesses from the beginning about who's going to finish and who isn't, and as we go along here, we'll mention and circle around and see everything. the fence builders and it's really quite a challenge to navigate up that steep hill without the post trying to lift up, so if you think about it, it's like a rubber band, it's like uh uh yeah, like a bow and arrow, its pole is is the correct arrow, then you have to aim where the bowstring is and it will lift that pole.
What you don't know is what's under the ground here or the equipment, yes, or the equipment doesn't know, nobody knows. So this was an old mine site and they just brought dirt in and covered up the old mine site, so there's rocks and all kinds of things under the ground right here, so there's going to be some challenges, you'll probably see some. auger bits Drilling and stuff ain't no sauce construction conditions yeah they're going to be awesome guys I hope you enjoy Smiles this morning here we have the guy who's organizing the event he's actually competing this year overseas this is called chamfering it's where It is routed on the top edge of the post, what it does is when they drive, it helps prevent splinters from coming out of the posts if the post is too dry and it also has a beautiful fit and finish.
The pole driver has a built-in auger system. to dig in case you have to pre-dig your holes all you need to build a fence is building the beginning of what's called a Rants reinforcement the trimmed reinforcement right here is going to go into the ground over here and plug right into the fence, The guys that are beating the bushes here have some guys that already have about 12 poles in the field and we're on our number one so we'll see them in about two hours when these guys really get going. I hope you are enjoying the video.

and are learning about fences. That is what it is. It's all about learning, make sure you stay until the end, we're going to go over all of this and we're going to continue with the judges and we're going to talk about the proper finish and construction quality of these fences, okay foreigner. foreign external support, you can see how it's mortised here, there's a little bit of sealer in there to help preserve the wood and protect it since it's already been cut and exposed to a non-factory pressure treated surface and then you can look here below, we have I made a pretty artistic setup right there under the ground that will be below ground level and will be buried once the fence is completely finished.
It looks very nice. The wire used here today is 842-6 tornado wire, it's a Titan knot, which is that one. knot you see there is a fixed nut, which means eight eight horizontal line cables 42 inches high and a space of six inches between the stays these are the stays these are the line cables this is the height 42 inches foreign something a little unique right here by sliding our fence boards into a little mortise area, they slide in here, this will really make this fence stand out from the competition. I haven't

seen

anyone else doing this, as you can see here, these guys already have all their posts in the ground, they already have their board fence up here, they turned the corner and it's an inside corner, a challenge, as you can see now, we're pulling and stretching wire and this is a typical H bracelet, you'll see.
On most farms today they tend to move away from the old brace because there is a danger of entrapment for their animals, so on a horse or a cow the foot may hang. These guys have solved that problem by tightening that cable very tight. It looks great, look at this, everyone's looking at this, someone's fence is pretty accurate, Dr. Stix, what do you think here, what do you think about that? Oh, I think everyone's doing a phenomenal job, we're seeing some new techniques here today, absolutely, it will be. Awesome, very excited about it, yes, yes, I am very excited.
Okay, this is the fence break team they put up. They put this in just so we could lean on it tasting a little lean. How are you doing on the lean test? It's 100. Okay. Good as a glove, back on board it spreads, I've

never

seen

a board stretcher, right, there's a board stretcher, well judges, what do you think of what these guys have put on a long day? Yeah, eight hours going up and down this hill, working your ass off. It started great, you know, before the sun came up, yeah, here we are in the last 20 minutes, I think they're exhausted and rightly so, so we have a team that finished, yeah, the remaining ones are trying to put the Polish on and touch their fences and they are working hard they have earned a break tonight yeah 15 minutes left awesome guys 15 minutes guys we managed to steal the judging baton from the judges this has basically all the specs written on it and we.
We're going to take them and show them very quickly the specs that we're also building these fences so they know exactly how they're judged and then we're going to show them the winner at the end of this so this is the board fence side okay and the fence of boards must be built to a certain specification. We're going to put our spec post right here and you can see that their specs are off. The board is out of place. Well, let's see that it is so. a little bit off, now they gave points for flow, so the fence flows very well, but the spec is a little bit off, okay now, if we go here to the wire fence and again this is woven wire, wire tornado, I'll turn this around. type around the fixed knot and these are all the wires, okay, so the ground goes there, the wire meets the specifications right there, the fixed knot meets the specifications, you can see that each line almost lines up, but not of the all right, this is our top of the network. wire, that's the line, it's slightly off and our two barbed wire marks are slightly off from the top of the pole, it was supposed to be 55 inches and this was just a little high, these are the guys finishing first , however we're not just judged on how quickly you do it, we're also judged on fit and finish, so you can see that's slightly off.
It would have been a good idea for each of these fencers to make one of these guides for themselves. as they built the fence and these are the guys with the H bracket here so slightly out of spec but not too far again the post is supposed to be at 55 inches and this is about three quarters of an inch too high. go down and read each individual post and that's what the judges are doing up to here, so we have two strands of barbed wire, our netting wire, and then at the bottom we have our wire that they use to mark the line straight and all of that is supposed to be the same so this has to be stapled together with that as you can see here both wires are supposed to be together so this fence was made first but it just didn't meet spec .
I mean it's not a high quality fence at all, no, this is a fantastic fence, guys, all these people who are working here today are fantastic fence builders. Now is the time to let the judges do their job. This is the last two minutes, but remember whether we're done or not, we give up at four o'clock a full eight hour day here, there's a lot of work to do these guys were dancing today time's up guys and there's probably two or three teams that didn't finish let's take a look at their work uh man, what a tough day, what a long day for everyone, okay guys, we're with Jake Wilson Wilson fence and we have a clear winner, so we'll let us Take it and show us what you did.
It is important what made it earn the fit and finish and meet the criteria. The winner of this year's Fall Fence Forum Shootout was Luke Gibson and Langley's Gavin Langley of Langley's Fence and here are the reasons why we chose them as the number one winner. On top, the fit and finish of your four board fence was absolutely flawless, the boards are straight on top, no arches at all, pretty much whatever, the tops of the posts were rounded before driving , which allowed them to hit them with maximum impact without cutting them. What they did then was they mortised these boards at each end, they are 1 by 6 by 16 pine boards and they introduced them by flexing the board, cutting them to size and leaving that flex that allowed them to see completely, I think.
They were probably about an inch and three-quarters to two and a half inches with a router bit. They used a jig to come in here and then they pulled out their center post exactly evenly between the two end posts, so one of the things we're looking for. For uniformity of spacing, much of this is judged with a level and tape measure. The heights of the posts were perfect. The door opens perfectly and lands right in the center of the post. They are not on wire. The wire work was exceptional. Everything is uniform. Everything is where it should. be it the fit and finish of the strut, its mortise work, the treatment after now, if we go down we see how the struts lock into their stubby, uh, very small gaps anywhere, excellent craftsmanship, the stapling is As it should be, these junctions are right here.
The knots are lined up, I put spikes on themto give them an extra touch after the figure eight, there's a nearly constant six inch gap all the way down and then the bottom line cables also feature that are a chest block on the spin post that is executed with absolute precision. and all the angles correspond to the way they should be, the flow is adjusted to stay within the spec range, but we specified that the flow of the fence would exceed the specifications we gave for the height of the line, the total height of the post and they did it. a very good balance job that as they go down to the bottom of the hill and back to the ground, they chose to go with a tie block or a foot that they have drilled at an angle rammed with wire. and secured here to prevent this pole from lifting due to frost or most likely freezing, thawing, moisture and cable pressure.
Again continue a good flow with the ground, try to stay parallel to the ground or appearance of the same, they go down to a nice terminal point here and again the wire work has a little flare there with a two point spike after an impeccably executed Heavy Duty Termination Knot, positive slope towards the King's post, a very tight here and just a top fence, really very happy with those guys and proud to call them my friends, but also proud of everyone who competed here at the uh level of The craftsmanship of the following specs of just building top fences really reached a Very high standard here on the drop fence forum and I'm proud to be a part of it.
