book

, which is a bestseller (congratulations), was based on... Absolutely. These were based on

stories

: You live in Omaha, Nebraska. Obviously your sister lives in New York City. They were

stories

that you told her and that she couldn't believe. Was this... what made you come up with the idea for a

second

book? -Because we had too many stories to fit into the first book. -Yeah. -And I still live there, and that's why these things happen to me constantly.

second

book.” And I say: "she is writing herself." -And these are... these are... And I think there is a real... I mean, it's a strange way to describe this book, but it is an education that is in the form of a gift. You are both very funny. You are both very honest. They both seem like very loving people, and yet they very clearly describe these racist things that happen to both of them. And I think it's helpful for people like me to read them and say, "Oh my God.

I knew it was bad. I didn't quite understand the depth of this." -Yes, people don't... That's part of the reason we wrote the first book, because of the sheer volume of this stuff. It's the trash life of a little lady, and it's so funny because she's not... she's not special in any way. -That? -Just kidding! I'm kidding! I'm kidding! She is not angry nor is she bad or mean in any way. She's just a cute, happy guy, and all of that happens to her. -And these stories, you have to read them to believe them. Are there any good examples of exactly what we're dealing with? -Oh yeah.

Then, not long ago, just before I finished the second book, I went to the car dealership. I was going to buy a new car. And I'm looking at this car and I'm saying, "You know what? If I pay cash for this, can you do it better?" And they say, "Of course not. That doesn't exist. We don't do that." I said, "Okay." I left, immediately called a family friend... -Because she knows very well that they do that. Everyone knows they do that. -White knight. He says, "I live for this. I'm on my way." He goes there, look...
I mean, this is in minutes. The same car. Sa... Offer cash, the same amount of money, and they said, "Oh, we'll take $4,000 off." -Actually?! They gave $4,000 -- -Both: $4,000! -And at no point could they smell that this was... -No, I love it because... the guy calls me and says, "You know what? You have to go back and look at this car because someone is watching." on that." -So she calls them back. She says, "I sent my white friend there and you gave him a $4,000 discount." And they said, "Okay, okay. Good. You can get a $1,000 discount." -Swear to God. -Can you believe it?! -I only got $1,000 off. -That's amazing. -She didn't buy... -I didn't buy the car. -So, you said that you wrote this last book at your parents' house while drinking margaritas.
Was that your process for the second book? -Yes, more or less. -Yes, yes. -Okay, well, yes. You also admitted that your mother didn't like it. Would you like to read the first book? Did she change her tune in the second? -We're still grounded by the last book. -Yes. -She shouldn't even be here. -But you got her to agree to participate and tell some of her own stories. - We're bigger and stronger than her, Seth." "Little miss." "So you just bullied her into... "When was the last time you felt that way?!" "I mean, do you think? I want to." I mean, she should be proud of the fact that this is a book that is circulating and people read it and enjoy it. -No, she is.
She is very proud. She just explicitly said... -Both: "No. ..." -"...put me in the book." -"...put me in the book." -And then we did it. And then we said: That was the first book. That was blatant. But then in the second book, we said, "We'll tell your stories the way you want them told. And we won't include a lot of the stories where, you know, you, um...uh, defend your children." What about that? Let's put it like this. -Well, of course. Because she appears very heroic as someone who defends and defends her children. You have other people in your family, other people in your... your circle of friends to confide in you about her stories and tell you stories.
Were most people eager to do that or hesitant? -I think a lot of people were anxious. Our whole family, our brothers, our sisters, everyone was fine. And then people in the community said... There are a lot of people who said, "Ooh, I have a story." I say, "Of course I do. You're my neighbor." -I have a lot more to ask you, especially about a very special person you met.
