How to Use Grout, Seal & Fixtures | DIY Shower Remodel Tutorial

video. In this video we will show all the clips. We will clean it. We'll milk this. Let's polish this until it's perfect. I am using a new

grout

that I have never used before, sold at Home Depot called Poly Blend. We are going to follow the instructions because it tells me on the box that you have 20 minutes once you place it on the wall to start washing. Today's challenge is: can I make this in 20 minutes or will I have to make a second box? You all know my advice on growing is simple you mix it you mix the whole box well the only time you can cheat is when you are using unsanded

grout

that has no browns in it if it's just gray you can usually cheat but I'm using it's called brown, it's bone, okay, that means it has a red tint because the grout is a mix that I can't afford I have two different colors on the wall.

I'm going to cover the whole box. I'm going to try to do this in 20 minutes just so you can get an idea if you think this is going to be something you can accomplish because as a homeowner. Anyone who has never made mosaics before may find that it is worth investing in two boxes because it can be a lot of work. The best thing you can do when you're working that fast is to make sure everything is perfectly clean, so we. We're going to start by removing the clips, we'll clean this up. As for cleaning the cement, you just want to go straight through with just the tip, now yes. You will do this a couple of days after doing the cement work. You can actually just take a damp sponge and soak it first.

It's much easier. We'll show you in just a minute, but for now, just finish removing all these clips ah this is therapeutic it should be that easy let me show you something real quick because understanding these clips is the key to why it's worth taking the time. to work clean here we go here's the one that was just broke and here's the other one now if I'm going to put them next to each other I'm going to show you something here we go this is the part that goes behind the tile okay and You can see that that's where it breaks, right where the wedge rotates now it doesn't start directly ok, you have to balance it on an edge ok and it breaks there is a weak point there ok now the tab system that I'm finding is working fine ok, It doesn't take much force to clean the tile, right, oh there's another one that had too much cement.

Great, you will find that there are a lot of people in the industry in the tile clip market and what they are doing is designing different ones. clips with different weak points, it's okay because I can peel them off when I get it right, but the tile guys usually work so fast that they don't have time to clean them, so what they've done is they've got a whole industry. from people who hold tiles and are making tile clips for the messy tile installer and the weak point that comes off is so weak that even when you are compressing the two pieces together they will break so it's a real art.

Of course, if you don't have a hammer, you can always use a tape measure. It's okay, just use the rubber side which works great, but try to avoid using metal inside the

s. Okay, it's like you're not enjoying taking your clips. Get out, you shouldn't renovate your house, this is the joy of renovating right here, okay, I have to be able to have a little fun once in a while, okay, I told you I was going to use everything from Home Depot on this, so I went . I went out and bought their tile hole saw kit.

God help us all. Let's use this thing and see if it works. I'm putting my own shower on the scale here, so this is a safe experiment, as you can see above here. I always cut my holes while making mosaics and grind from the back and I never have a problem with that so I don't have one of these but when I work with my kids I realized that I grind from the back of the mosaic is a set of skills that many people have problems with now. Well, let's see, they have a kit here that is designed to be used over and over and over again, so basically the idea here guys is to take this off and put it here so you can stick it to the wall. If you don't have this assembly you would basically just set the edge this way you put the drill in and hold it and set the edge and grind across the slab slowly and as you go a little bit through the glaze you start moving it up to to have something to sit on so it doesn't spill all over the wall it's a little tricky okay this just takes the whole skill factor out of the equation the only thing I don't like is because there's a lot of movement here so I'm going to try to get out of the way.

I'm going to start with the bottom down as usual, so no, I'm not going to run all over the place, okay? That's a great sound right now, we're doing great. What I'm doing is I'm actually putting just a small amount of rocking motion in there. I want to make the hole I'm drilling just a hair larger than the drill bit itself. so as not to overheat it while I drill, that's fine and I don't want to run the risk that while I'm drilling a hole it gets stuck and cuts the tile just fine, that's fine I think I'm done with this I really don't need this protector here it's really there it is okay, come on guys, let's go there, come on boy, that's something very sticky, that's why I love Olfa, it's like having a razor blade with you at all times, right, this is something difficult.

Hearthstone, I'm almost halfway through, it's getting a little warm up, I think I'm going to grab a sponge with some water and hopefully that will help this run a little more efficiently, okay, so Max is here, it's like I could smell. Basically I'm just taking a relatively wet sponge and as I press water comes out of the corner right under my drill bit okay we've got some wire here let's take a look at the core sample okay so that's it . the tile and then we sit down, shouldn't there be a hole there? translating that information, you know, worst case scenario, I'm in the wrong place.

I'm going to open up the other side of that wall and move that fixture where it needs to go because I'm not going to re-tile, but this is a tile-on-tile project. it could be making contact with the next layer of stone here I have to be careful oh there we go oh no it's okay we're fine that was just a big chunk of thin layer that was pushed into the hole. Well, okay, that's fair, not bad. little gadget, I don't know how many holes you can make with it, but it definitely fits diamond tipped stuff, so if you're doing one or two jobs around your house, I'll recommend that tool which was awesome.

One thing about these tiles that I noticed here is that they have these little wax elements, okay, but they are only on these tiles, not the Basque one, and I don't know what the problem is with that, but we have to remove it before we start, don't forget this series, the video before this one and this is how to work in a wet area, just if you are tiling as an accent wall like we did in our bedroom. You can watch that video, I think. You're going to like one thing, this is the shiny tile, but even a permanent marker leaves a mark, okay, give it a little bit of this tub and tile cleaner, let it sit for a minute or two, okay, and I'll finish it. wash. All the dirt on the floor from the drilling process, then I'll get clean water and wash the walls just to make sure all my adhesive is removed from the grout lines and cleaned, and then I'll be good to go. to move forward with the project, so it was very easy to wash, it's basically just getting it wet in this environment because I'm using grace, if it gets wet it turns very dark gray, it's easy to identify and because it's just been tiled.

For a couple of days, as soon as the cement is absorbed, the water has not yet cured properly, so it is cleaned. The next step is the grout. I'm ready to roll. Here is the polyester blend. Now I'm going to read the instructions. this came out clean, I put in 1.4 liters of water, here we go, this table isn't exactly level right now, but I put in 1.4 liters of water and then we're going to add the whole box of grout, we're going to mix it. for three minutes, but instead of doing it by hand, I'm going to use my slow mixer, we'll let it sit for five minutes, then I'll give it a quick mix again, then I'll apply it, and then Here it says 10 to 20 minutes is a long range. and the reason there is a range is when you set it because there are different factors at play how cold is the water what is the room temperature what is the humidity in the room what is the temperature of the room, okay, how much are you working while you work with her?

All these different factors, okay, is the air moving? You have a fan on, oh, be very careful, the longer you want this to be able to last. The colder the water, the less you play with it, um uh, the colder the room you're working in will be. That will give the most extension because it has a polymer additive. The heat will speed up the setting time and get you back to 10 minutes what we're going to do because I'm using cold water and since I have some experience with this type of polymer group, I'm going to follow the 20 minute clock, I'm going to start brewing. my grout and I'm going to set my timer and then when it goes off I have to stop grouting and start washing no matter if I can't grout this entire shower in 20 minutes I have to mix another bag okay you can't go beyond this.

I'm going to pay a price: it takes longer to polish and clean than to apply, just keep that in mind, okay, it takes another 30 more to clean everything than to lay a sod, so you can take my advice on how to apply it, I'll show you a couple tips and tricks, we'll set the timer for 20 minutes, we'll try this product because it's available at your local Home Depot and then it says wash it. everything and then wait two hours and then give it another interesting cleaning and then it says don't touch it for a day and a half 16 hours now here's the joke here's a polymer modified unsanded grout and they're showing you that you shouldn't walk on it and the reason for this is that unsanded grout does not do well in floor joints, but if you add a polymer to unsanded grout you can use it in floor joints as long as they are small enough, this product says here that it is Well. for joints up to 1 8 in. now many people are using large format rectified stone tiles, they are leveling their floors, they are putting in a 1 8 in. grout linehandling polymer more than anything else at the moment.

Let's get all this extra stuff out of the way, okay, the good news is that it's not going to stick to your acrylic shower base. I just don't like getting stains on my shoes, so now it's very important that you clean everything. The excess is fine in the same order you applied it because it should take about the same amount of time to clean it off.this down as you put it we're not going to make you wash me watch me wash 15 minutes but this is just the first wash crosses the lines of grip against the grip at least 45 so it's the same as when you put it on, you take it off the same way. 45 is fine and that will ensure that you rub it down and get it nice and flush with the surface.

Big deal, rub it. leave it messy so you know you have to work on it now, the reason I applied grout from the bottom up and then around the top is because I knew that when it came time to wash, if I had problems, I would want to wash the hottest part . of the room first, so I washed up and went up here and the heat from six feet up is usually almost 10 degrees warmer in your house than the rest of the straps, so it sets up a lot quicker and I wanted to be ready.

Just do these top two rows, everything looks pretty good here, okay, if you miss something, patch it, now is the time to do it. Well, we'll give those patches a couple of minutes to set up, now that we have clean water. Okay, now I'm going to go. It's a little boring, but that's how you get rid of grout haze. Okay, clean the ceiling too. I'm going to paint it anyway, but set your brush for a couple of minutes. a couple of feet, you turn it over, you put it a couple of feet away, okay, the first time you touch it with a step on a sponge, you're moving the excess grout, the second time you're removing the haze , okay and you don't want to have too much water in there and you pick up the mist and walk away, if you clean it again you will just clean the new mist and leave the old mist, so this is a matter of time and patience, get three lines of grout, that's A lot, next time I come, I'll start here one, two, three and do three more lines of grout.

Alright, my touch up is done and clean and then we'll go around the room and do the same thing. I'm going to do this now, here's the trick. I have a horizontal grout line that needed repair. I can't clean horizontally. I'm going to set it up, press on the bottom and then just wipe. Okay, that's all I can do and believe. The reason it needs to be repaired is because I probably went sideways with the sponge at some point, okay, so I'm going to clean that tile below the sand line like that and above the grout line like this, clean it , here we go, okay, guys, yes you are.

as a guide so you can do your own tile work. Consider this: the water that is in this bucket right now should not go down the drain. Well, what you want to do is take out the sponge, give it a good ring and I want to leave that bucket with that water and all the polymer and all the grout will settle to the bottom. Okay, overnight, it usually takes about 12 hours. After that, you can take it outside. You can pour that water on the lawn or in a ditch. and then let it dry for a day or two, okay, and then you can just turn it over, slap it on the back of the old bucket and that big piece of trash will just come out and you'll throw it in the trash, okay, you don't want to run the risk of clogging your drainage system and then you can even have a clean bucket when you're done.

Okay, there's some great and helpful advice from someone who had to learn the hard way, um, yeah, that was a back. charge, I didn't appreciate it, okay, here we go, that's my wife it must be lunch time, one more thing, um, this group, please let it dry, seriously, okay, don't be in a hurry to start making another job, um, I would suggest probably two days before you do it. Turn on your

fixtures

if you're in a hurry, put a fan in here, okay, just point it slightly towards the ceiling, get some air moving, turn on the bathroom fan, get the humidity out of here, but, yeah, okay, Don't rush, this is it. a 20 minute challenge, now the alarm went off and I was about two minutes away from finishing washing, so it took me 20 minutes to apply and wash it off.

To give you an idea, a large format tile doesn't have much of a grout line, but if you're working with smaller mosaics, you'd be surprised how long it takes to even grout, so be careful if you're going to use those. fast setting stuff, make sure you have a large format mosaic on the wall. Everything will be fine, we're back and it's been a couple of days, we let this really dry and set up nice and cure. Remember when I washed I was cleaning the grout residue and even when you do that. you're still going to get a fine dust so it's important that you grab a rag of some kind and have a little tool like this because I've also painted the whole room since then okay because we want to have a painted finish. surface before we apply all the caulk and silicone, it's like one of the last steps, so we're going to clean all the tiles, we're going to add all the plumbing

properly, but I'm going to do the The caulking of the tiles around the roof and work from top to bottom I also do it with caulking the tiles around the top.

I will be putting in plumbing fixtures which in many cases will cause dust and debris to fall especially when drilling into tiles so that's why you want to work from top to bottom always being sensitive to the fact that silicone takes 24 hours to really heal and you don't want to work on new silicone? That's the secret, okay and you're just quickly rubbing and cleaning this. It's not really rocket science, I don't even know if the camera will be able to pick up the difference I'm making here, but I can see it in the brightness, but the dust is gone and the reason I want the dust.

There's one more step after I finish polishing this and you can see all the dust on the rag, so there's obviously a residue. One more step is to

ing the grout is actually very important. because it can trap moisture behind the wall, so you just have to clean all of this. Remember we are using Home Depot products and the Home Depot product actually requires the use of a grub sealer with their sand-free polyester blend grout, which is unique. because it's a quick drying grout that still needs to be sealed and since we're doing this video specifically about their product line, I'm going to follow their lead, but if I'm going to use a polyester blend grip, I'm a Polymer Modified Grout.

I'm going to go buy the ultra color from my paycheck because the sealer is already included. Saves a whole step, but here's where the cool thing is, not everyone has a Lowe's in their neighborhood, so if that's you. You will be able to follow this video and be successful, which of course is the most important key. Being competent with your work comes first. Once you are confident, then you can worry about being efficient. Okay, do all this ladder work. first I felt something there we go now I'm going to get a new rag and I'm going to do the bottom half maybe even a couple more, okay you can't keep polishing with a dirty rag or you'll be I'm just going to leave more dirt on the top, so here is the grudge sealer they are selling, it is a surface protector for tile, they have a full line of lab tile products, okay this is not new, the instructions are behind the cover. tab and they basically say you know, put it on and then after five minutes wipe off the excess.

Well this is a glossy tile so there is no penetrating sealer on the tile it's just the grip and I don't want to make a big mess for me so what I'm going to do is just spray the corner of my sponge and I'm going to do this and you'll see that the grout actually turns a darker color. away so you know if you have it wet, okay, this is going to be an easier way for me to handle whether I know it's sealed or not, and you can also use those little brushes if you want to pour some of this on. in a glass or something use a small brush those foam brushes they sell are like disposable here we go and this doesn't seem like much is happening but the reality is that a sealed grout doesn't let the water penetrate behind it, it's just one more layer of protection, okay, here we go, I'll finish this process and we'll move on to the next one.

Well, it took about five minutes, perfect, now it's time to go back. Follow my same steps and simply wipe off all the excess right now. This sealant tends to have an almost alcohol-like effect on glass, it just evaporates, so if it doesn't penetrate it doesn't seal anything, it's actually very easy to clean. How beautiful, so it looks like it's going to take me another five minutes to finish cleaning all of this up. That's great, so in 10 or 15 minutes you can seal your grout. Big surprise, but don't be in a hurry to get wet, it's always okay. check the instructions before using something, oh, bathrooms are delicate, that way there are many products in the bathroom that have drying time, curing time and working time, and you need to understand the product before using it, here we go, guys, here now.

Come on, let's talk about the two products we're going to use in the shower, okay, and the reason I'm buying everything at Home Depot again is so you can manage your expectations. I have no idea how this will turn out. They're not products I use, but that's what they sell, so we're rolling the dice. They sell an almond color that, from the tip, should be the color of your finish, so it will make a good edge for caulking. This is just a normal product. kitchen bathroom mold mold type silicone heavy duty and I'm going to use that on some of these really thin lines just to get a good seal, but on these thicker lines around the ceiling I'm using a bone, what they call ceramic tile caulking Okay, Let's go with the first step number one.

I have a pretty significant gap on that side, so I'm going to cut a medium tip for the first two sides. Yes, that sharp 45 degree knife gives you a lot of control. I'm going to go a lot. However, there is a sharper angle so when I'm applying it I can go like this and keep a tight bead or I can go like this and open up and get a nice wide one, that's really the secret to this, it takes a little bit of practice, if you are not used to it, take a cardboard box and a tube of putty, and then practice cocking all the corners on the inside of the box, pull it all the way to the bottom. 10 dollars would be enough experience.

You can do this like a pro, okay, here we go, let's try this bad boy. I hope we like this product. You know, this has happened to me before. With this type of silicone, they start out like a mustard bottle that has never been shaken and are just runny, I don't get it, okay, I don't like the consistency of this product at all, maybe you're supposed to shake it first, okay, it takes a little getting used to here, that's for sure I really want to work clean, so now. I'm going to come from the other side and then we can end up together unless you touch this kind of thing, the better.

Okay, a damp wipe with your finger if you want to be nice and tight, okay, and remove some of the grout. Wrap your place around it with a four inch knife and then slide it down, that's fine and you'll be able to remove the excess tile without disturbing the bead, this isn't really feasible, remember you really have to get it right the first time, it's a little frustrating. You may find that using regular silicone will work better for you, especially if you don't have much experience working with that product again. Try not to use pressure. They are a caulking tool and have a contoured edge. use it to clean these things, it's a little better than your finger because of the safety factor, right, uh, that's a cut tile and if you're not careful, you just tear your hand open trying to draw a nice edge here and there. go push that, okay, it takes a while to get used to such a big space, let's try to go back and fill it.

I'm just going to clean up the mess I made here. It looks pretty disgusting right now, doesn't it? come over after everything is done and do some touch ups that's what we're going to do and before I break the second tube and finish this I'll do it all off camera let's get the silicone out and I'll show you. you know how to use it in the tightest place okay good silicone we'll have a lid okay I'm going to take it off we're making a little hole it even has rings on the tip here and it lines up with what your angle should be , I'm going to go for that, that will be good again.

The experience is worth it here. Start small if it is too small and doesn't fill the space and create a seam from one side of the slab to the other side of the slab. then just cut the hole bigger but start with somethinglittle. Remember the reason we use this instead of grout is because expansion and contraction can cause the grout in the corner to chip. Now in some cases you've seen me do videos where I've piled up and then added clear silicone, that's an option, if you have nice spaces you can use pure silicone, that's fine, it's preferable if it's more of a standard. industry, stupid, I have to drill the hole, okay, which means I'm going to start making a rag to get the goo out of my puncture out of there let's do the same thing just a little stain now make sure it's closed in both sides that's all you need is good ta-da now if you find that you leave too much on the tile go back with a dry cloth thumb you can just run the edge up there and then smooth it out again after two minutes of being there don't touch it new, although it's okay, your working time is very short, so work in small sections at a time if necessary so that you can achieve your goal when you are finished, put the top back on so you can use. then it rings again, the phone rings, put the lid on it, not a single dry piece comes out because then you're cleaning it and you're making a mess and then 30 seconds later it starts curing and ah, so that's the plan okay?

I'm going to do the rest of this now. Remember this was my wall mount for the hose. It's fine for the back wall and that's the perfect size for the ultimate wall system. We've added half an inch. The news is that they sell these half inch NPT threaded pipes in half inch increments, so now this is the perfect size. I already know it. This is what makes this so fun. Now I don't know exactly where the perfect will end up. I'll go six times, sometimes I've gone up to 10, depending on how much I trust the company. The good news is that it is a real professional hood, all brass fittings. I'm going to go get my ladder, get up there and tighten it properly. Now I'm using medium strength, it'll probably seal, but I know I can get one more rotation out of this bad boy, so I'm going to take it and that's where it gets difficult with two hands. If you don't have a knob you have to turn it to make an adjustment, okay here we go, enough selling saddles, let's get on with this now. Turns out I know these parts are plastic for a reason, okay, and they're made overseas. Okay, but if you can leave it on, that makes everything a lot stronger right now, here we go, we use the blade of the knife to start the lid, we take them off and they screw in the middle again. on the right side zero over the shoulder we're going to put silicone in the hole okay, okay, you just want to tighten it until it doesn't make any independent movement, okay, don't overtighten, all of these accessories here are plastic. This is all about the process. We will get the screw set. We'll put a little more silicone right in that hole. I'm going to hold the drill with the screw and then I'm going to put the rod in place, okay, that's where we're going to put the caps on, okay, no need to bother putting silicone on the caps, remember the screw is stainless steel when this be everything. All said and done, if you want to protect your screw even a little more, you can put some clear silicone right around the edge here at the top and bottom to prevent water from getting in behind it, never put silicone on the bottom of something So. that you have the ability for water to come in from the back, it can also drain, it makes sense, here's this little tube that I put in before I took it out to check the measurement, so you're going to add another bit of Teflon.

Here for both ends, now the wall angle I bought is still pending, so I cleaned the old one and we're going to use it for now. I tried it on and it fit almost perfectly, so what am I going to do?
