Our nation will never outgrow the need for responsible and thoughtful leadership, which means values ​​and lessons. The concept of Scouting will never go out of fashion for a century. Scouting has helped young Americans find more in themselves and the world around them than they thought possible. Our goal has been and continues to be that our young men and women always want to do the right thing. Even if no one is watching, one thing the scouts did for me was the formation of my character. I mean, it was very important. I understood from the beginning that I had to tell the truth.

Be reliable. Be trustworthy. Be someone others would admire and always. We live to a standard that was perhaps a little higher at home, at work, and at play. The lessons of Scouting last a lifetime. The people who have the most profound effect on society are the ones who get involved. Scouting has a proud history of promoting service to others. Teach that there is a virtue in giving selflessly and that by helping our families and communities our world becomes a better place, no task is too big or too small and no person is insignificant. I think more hours have been spent performing a new and positive service. projects that have left more vivid changes on the part of the Scouts than probably any other service organization in the nation.

A Scout grows with each approach and this is an even richer reward than that obtained by working, playing and living outdoors, learning to appreciate and respect our world and our place in it, these virtues have been and always will be essential to the exploration experience, going camping, learning a little bit of self-confidence in what you can do and know, sometimes getting lost and the usual things that kids do, all these things that help build. I formed a character of mine that allowed me to handle crises and that is exactly what poverty was, so early training in Scouting was a definite help for me, not only on the Apollo 13 flight but in all my space flights in the hundreds of activities organized by the Scouts.

We do it outdoors and under the stars we encourage fun and camaraderie we give kids the chance to just be kids and we teach that the environment is a resource that should be appreciated and protected Scouts were champions of stewardship long before Green became a popular term and we led the way in preserving the environment for future generations. Scouting teaches that life is not about keeping score in terms of monetary possessions or titles, but about knowing that you did your best. that you could, that you made a difference, that you achieved something good and meaningful, that you did the best you could.

The right thing to do and from this fundamental philosophy, explorers have gone on to use their sense of adventure, work ethic and determination to achieve amazing things over the years. Explorers have become Olympians, surgeons, civil rights leaders, Pulitzer Prize winners, Academy Award winners, astronauts, government leaders. and even the scout presidents were the biggest influence on my life especially, and trying to be successful, this is what we learned at a very young age to rise through the ranks to be successful in winning, whether it's first class Scout or eventually Eagle Scout, no. every Scout will go to space or win a Pulitzer as Scouts grow into husbands, fathers, and mentors, even as they shaped the character of our country by leading productive, meaningful lives and living the Scout Oath every day in every corner of our country.
