Shag Pixie Haircut Tutorial | Step by Step

May 05, 2024
welcome to today's video so today we're going to focus on how to cut a short

haircut

so what I want to do is go through the section first and then for me the section is the most important part and then you get into the

haircut

, which becomes an easy part because you have already planned everything in your head, so we start, we take a triangular section just outside the marginal area and then I go with a vertical line towards the center of the back and then I draw from the crown to the edge of that triangle right at that recession point and I separate my first or second section and then I'll do the same thing, I copy it on the other side for the third section and that's pretty much I'm going to divide this cut of Hair, the only other thing we're going to include are a couple of disconnects that I'm going to show you right now, so now I'm going to get into it.

I'm going to split two disconnects right at the temple. area and just braid them, it doesn't matter if they actually come out, but you have to keep in mind that that's where that disconnection will happen and I'll show you the benefit of that towards the end of the video, so we're going to start our cut with a slight diagonal line forward right in the back, uh, in the center of the back of the head and I'm going to follow the shape of the head down. I'm going to continue doing that until the previous section. a little bit about the direction but not too much I'm not trying to increase the length towards the front I just want to direct it too far back just to use it as a guide throughout the haircut I don't want to pull the guide towards this section because that will make the section a little bit shorter each time and what I want to do is have a little bit more length towards the side of the head.

I'll continue working around the round part of the head. aware that as I go through this haircut, the shape of the head will change near the crown area, so you can already see on the tip of my finger when I cut that first section that it is actually cutting the hair longer than towards the inside of my finger, so look now so you can see, I start to lift the hair up a little bit because I know that's where it's going to be heavy because the shape of the head starts to curve outwards, so I counteract that with a little more lift and then I tuck my fingers in when I get behind the ear so there's a higher lift, then I comb my hair again and work the angle of my fingers more to follow the shape of the head, so I just move on by cutting the hair a little shorter towards behind the ear. a little bit more towards the top, that will give me that expanded shape in the crown area.

Now, as I move across the top and get towards that disconnected area, you'll see me directing everything back a little bit more. I'm following the head shape here, but on that top side, uh, right here, so look at the top, so I draw the top back and it's nice and high, which gives me a lift of weight. forward, but then when I go back to combing my hair, I go over the part and just turn the angle of my finger inward and follow the shape of the head, so that's the key to this haircut building that nice shape right by up the lifting direction to remove weight and then tuck it in to then remove even more weight and get the pretty hair. and close behind the ear so you can see the weight buildup, that line that goes through and goes up to the ear, you can see the disconnect that stays underneath, directs the top up and then moves it down to cut off more of that length, so I direct it too much or lift it up to take the weight off and then lower it to cut my line, so now you can see I comb that disconnect, let's leave that for later, I'm going to do that. on the dry cut i am using donald scott prepare this is basically a cutting lotion we use it for razor cutting but i also use it for scissor cutting so when the hair starts to dry i want to add a little bit of condition. it gives it a little bit of shine so I spray it on to help me stay organized but it has no hold and that's the key to that product so the biggest change here is that now I'm working with my finger pointing towards the floor and I just I continue with those forward diagonal splits bringing everything back to the previous section and we're just going to work our way through this side of the head.

Okay, now let's get to that other disconnect. Notice that the braid is missing. It doesn't exist anymore, so you just have to be aware of it, you don't always have to separate your disconnections. I talk a lot about this. As you get faster in the room, you may not separate as much while conscious. the shape of the head is fine, so I look at how I'm working on it. I'm leaving that disconnect to direct everything back, raising it just like I did on the opposite side, then lowering it and cutting my line, so I'm lifting to remove weight and then lowering the lift to cut my line where I want it to be, like this that ended the same.
You'll notice that I comb the part that I want to disconnect and then I cut the rest, so now that weight buildup on the crown beautiful shape that's happening now let's cut the top layers. I take a guide from below which is a short to long guide due to our over steering in the previous section, so I just follow that line. Doing a dot cutting technique, condensed cutting because I'm putting this whole section together. Also a way to save time in the classroom is to condense a section, as long as you're not directing too much and changing your form, so I mention that.
Keep the angle of my finger at the same point, cut it, I do the same on the opposite side and also raise the raised point, cut from short to long, so now that we have finished the top, you can see the fuzz effect that It's happening now. Let's go in and cut the bangs. We're going to use the Donald Scott carving comb. This is available at freesalon education.com or in store. FSE is a faster way to achieve this. It costs 39 dollars. A super cool shaving tool. It has the comb on one end, it has a 100 cutting side and a 50 cutting side and it also allows you to use your scissors at the same time so you can have several tools in your hand at once, so what I'm going to to do is to go To take that front triangle, I'm going to direct it too much to one side, we're going to create a convertible bang which is a bang that can be worn both ways.
I take the 50 cut side, I cut it and then as soon as I'm almost through the hair, I make a 100 cut and I just cut it, what it's going to do is take some weight off with the 50 side and then take all the weight with 100 so you're just smoothing out the edges and then cutting. All right, so I'm going to do this flat wrap technique with the blow dryer using the nozzle, it's going to be parallel to the hair flowing over it using the ergo diamond head paddle brush from the fse store um and I just work my way. until the hair dries, I really work on the shape of the head and then I go in and straighten the hair just to polish it from the mid shaft to the ends and get it ready for our dry cut.
Now I know some of you. I'm thinking this haircut doesn't look like anything yet, well I'm about to show it to you real quick. If you leave things with a purpose, you can really create a cool shape with this cut, so I go ahead and I'm elevating the hair just softening it with a little spiky cut at the top. I want to soften the shape a little. Then I'm going to go over and do the same thing on the sides as well so you can see the movement that's starting to happen on those layers. that's happening through it uh and then I go over the sides I raise them a little point cutting that that will smooth it out what cutting point does it do?
It just diffuses a line so if you cut lines in a haircut then you need to soften a little bit you have too much weight cutting points is a great way to get in there and just take density out of a line so it falls a little bit softer so I do it on both sides, I'm just kind of working that horizontal line lifting it up, making sure I don't alter that short line to long so you can see that the shorter thing towards the tip of my finger becomes longer towards the inside of my hand, always and when I don't mess with that line.
Don't mess with the haircut, all I'm doing is trying to soften and take away some of that weight. Now we're going to make a slide cut on both sides to eliminate some of this disconnection. This is where it really comes to life. So you can see, I pinch the cut, I slide with the scissors and it will start to bring everything together and you will start to understand why we did the disconnection in the first place, you never really know what a haircut is going to look like. until you start drying it, so I like those disconnects because they give me a little more freedom to play with the shape as it starts to dry and we'll do even more as we work on it, so it takes a little more point cutting. some vertical sections just smooth things out by adding a little bit of separation to this cut as well and just doing a little bit of magic through this cut, so that last little detail works.
I'm going to use a wire park 338. comb uh, this is a wide tooth comb. I love this for dry cutting because it doesn't get tangled in the hair and I just lift the hair up a little and then hit it with my scissors on the comb a little more. and then I clean the line, so I just put powder on top to bring it all together, a little bit of the tip of the scissors and then that's it with this haircut shape that we're going to apply and style. You guys will see it come to life after you do some of that detailed work.
I also want to show you here that it is from the previous direction and then changing the angle of the finger inwards. Now we are going to use Moroccan oil. One of my new favorite products is a dry texture spray, so you can see how the hair lays flat and as soon as I start spraying it, look at the texture, depth and contrast that happens with this product. Spraying it on doesn't have a very strong hold which is what I like so it just gives me a nice texture effect and I can keep layering it over and over again to get the result I'm looking for, finish it off. picking up a flat iron just twisting some of those pieces letting the product do the work for me uh and I'm going to cut the bangs you know some of you are thinking she has hair in her face let's work on that too so I just make a little sliding cut with my scissors and then I'm going to finish it with the Moroccan oil finish.
This is a strong hairspray, just raise your hand, twist it and then start building it now, know that we removed that triangle at the beginning of this cut, guys, you could change that triangle, you could cut any type of bangs that you want in this cut, so don't feel trapped. to make those heavier bangs like we have here, I hope you like this final result, although definitely try it on your guests try it on curly hair try it on straight hair try it on thick hair try it on medium hair play with the technique it's a lot of fun I hope you like it let me know if you have any questions download the fse now app for free in the app store thanks for watching
