Sometimes I still find tackling rooms really intimidating, but I've been doing this for a long time and I've come up with a process that really works for me and I hope it works for you too.

The kitchen is a little dated and my landlord and I have been chatting about how to update it. He totally agrees with me, he just takes the reins and renews it. I'm really lucky in that way so I thought what better video to show you how I plan a room from start to

finish

when it's a room I'm nervous to tackle so I'm going to walk you through it and make sure you stay until the end because I'm going to reveal everything. the design plan to all of you, yes, so the first step is I measure every time I take a space, I always go to the person's house and do a scan, so I take measurements of literally every thing, every wall, every appliance, furniture, whatever is in the room, I measure it and it comes to me Like a little plan, like a little drawing, I refer to this so many times that you have to make sure that you are measuring, even if it is your own space, you want to have the measurements with you on your phone in a notebook because chances are that when you're at the hardware store or picking out furniture, you'll say, wait, how big is that wall?

Will this furniture fit there? You will refer to them a lot. The second step is to ask yourself what works and what doesn't. Usually when I go and do a scan and take measurements, I chat with the person I'm creating the space for. I said you talked about space. You're like Hello room Hello room, what do you need? I always ask the person who the space is. I'm redoing what works, what doesn't work, what they like about their space, what they don't like about their space and I really get a sense of what the person needs, sometimes it's organization, sometimes it's a change of full style, but I ask this.

Simple questions for you and your partner can be a huge help when decorating your own space. Without a doubt, what works is the amount of storage here. We have so many storage cabinets, drawers, more cabinets. I've never had a drawer for pots and pans before. I love the storage, it definitely works, we even have storage under the bench here, speaking of this bench, this is working. I sit on this bench very often. I usually start my mornings here. I answer emails. I love it, especially when it's not too hot and we have the air conditioning on I open the window and sit and let the breeze kiss my face it's very sweet what's not working are these cushion covers I want to reupholster these cushions and the pillows I don't love this blind either, it just doesn't really go with the rest of the space.
Shall we do something on this wall? I don't know, but this is working, I just need some decor adjustments, other things that work, this utility closet I'm going to open. and you'll be surprised how messy it is, oh my god that's embarrassing. I have a video of me organizing it because it's out of control, so yes, this closet works, but I'm not sure if I love these doors. and noah and i have an idea that we both came up with together, so i love this need, this is working too, this island and these s

tools

, the island came with the apartment, we love it, we have put in some glass jars with dry products.
Down here, a couple of cookbooks and these s

tools

, in fact, I'm going to link the store below. Larissa, who just joined the AG team, has a vintage shop and she found these for us. They are amazing, I love them, so they are working, these are staying. I like this school style light, I think it will possibly stay, but there is nothing wrong with it. I have no idea what I want to do with the cabinet fronts, Noah, and in fact last night I had a big argument about the kitchen cabinets we were making. We like them, don't we like them?
Our owner is willing to upgrade. He says if they want to make an improvement, I'm all for it. The good thing is that the bases, like all the cabinets, are from Ikea, so the bases could stay. but what we could change are the cabinet fronts and I think it would be a relatively inexpensive change because we would only need to remove the doors from the hinges and the drawers, like I said there is nothing wrong with them but we could add a little color or since I don't know more than one style here at the moment it's like a hodgepodge of things another thing that doesn't work this refrigerator has to go it doesn't open like it's hitting the wall it's too wide it already made a dent in the baseboard there's duct tape too joining the crisper drawer, so the refrigerator is too big.
I know and our owner agreed that this needs a little improvement. Something I find really useful is that I write down the changes. I want to do it, in this case I have written down the refrigerator and then I go and take measurements of the refrigerator and write down exactly how big the refrigerator is now, but I can see what size I will need to replace it. that the refrigerator doesn't fit, so I just make an estimate of what kind of sizes we're looking for when we start shopping and that makes it a lot easier because when we're shopping I can just look at my list and say well, I need a refrigerator that measures no I know four feet by eight feet or whatever, the size of a refrigerator probably not, this refrigerator is huge, it's the biggest thing I've ever seen alarm off, no, but yeah, it just makes The next step is a lot easier when You do the math in advance.
We really don't like the green backsplash. Our owner also agrees. He said they put this up a while ago. It was the cheapest they could find and I just didn't. I don't love it so that's definitely going to change too oh one thing I didn't add that we love is the countertops they are real stone Caesar stone countertops and they are beautiful those are the main things I think they could use a bit. of an update is a small change, so I'm going to write them all down, put them on paper, and start taking some action.
This is not the time to come up with ideas that you don't want to be like collecting ideas online right now. There are so many times where I think I have so many ideas and then I get lost in all of them, I don't know what measurements I'm working with and the process is not that simple and it's actually more overwhelming, it sounds like you really know what you're talking about , yes, it's shocking to hear you say it, but I also love that for me, once you have the list of things left and the measurements you want to consolidate all in one place, I love to use. millinote for this step has really been a game changer in what I was thinking about this morning when I used to do makeovers and I wasn't using millinote.
I wish I had notebooks full of measurement lists and word lists in my notes and on my phone and everything was everywhere. but milinet allows you to keep everything in one place so I'm starting a board called kitchen and I'm just filling in all those things that I know from the beginning so you'll see I'm writing things like I want new roman curtain here's the size that should have. I'm writing down the measurements of the refrigerator and what size the new refrigerator should be and I'm also importing before photos to give me a real idea of what I'm like. working and gathering all those measurements and photos in one place to start, so once I have all the information on my board, now it's time to start brainstorming, so this is where I start browsing line, I look at Pinterest, I look at things.
I have already saved. I also feel like a lot of people approach this step looking for new ideas without realizing that they've probably saved ideas while browsing Instagram to their saved folder - that's something I love to do. I love going to Pinterest to look at things I've saved and I always find patterns right now. I seem to love green kitchens, lots of neutral colors, lots of organic shapes like arches and it's nice to get the juices flowing and see what. I already love it, this is where the Millino Web Clipper comes in very handy because while I'm browsing online I can save the photo or product using this little Web Clipper and it imports it to the board I'm working on.
It's so cool, so smart, when you click on that product on your dashboard, it will go directly to the product, which means you can buy the product from your factory's dashboard. You can share the board with family and friends, so I added Noah to this board and just asked him to give it a little thought if I'm working on a makeover for work. I will always be in contact with Atlanta and our buyer Larissa that way they have everything they need. They can ask questions before they start ordering the product. Hopefully. I could ask Lottie's opinion on him or a pink, yes, a lot, he says, um mom, there aren't enough pom poms.
These are the pantry doors I'm thinking of. I really love how old school they look and I think we can save a little and just kind of hang them back on the front of this, but I'm torn because I love, love these tiles. I've had them in mind for a while. They are made of clay mosaics and are very irregular. They have so much texture and I think they'll look so beautiful there, but then I saw this five thousand house. She just renovated the kitchen and used these beautiful tiles, these are fireclay and there is something very fun and quirky about them.
About those, obviously I'll have to ask my landlord what he thinks, but I don't know, there's something like the irregular shape that's classic and I'd like it to match whatever he wants to know in the comments, could you guys choose something more original? and quirky in terms of backsplash or would you choose something that is more timeless. One thing I know for sure is that the cabinet systems already here are in pristine condition, so the actual cabinets can remain, we don't need them. knocking them down are totally fine and the beauty of ikea is that there are so many companies that sell upgraded cabinet fronts and my idea was that we were just going to change the fronts, remove the hinges and then replace them with new cabinets. fronts, but since we want to keep the base of the cabinet itself, also this molding can be removed, I think so, it is held by an L bracket, so it should be able to come loose, meaning there won't be any wood molding left and then I would replace the doors.
I looked for this sticker making sure it is the kitchen section but it is not a pre 2015 ikea kitchen system. They discontinued this kitchen system in 2015. So I am on the semi handmade website and I am just sending you a message to say: do you make custom fronts for this old kitchen system? They said no, but this is what happens with the planning process. You have a vision and then setbacks happen. It's really good to know that we can remove this clipping. bottom of the cabinets I might actually try to do that now just to like it no I really shouldn't it's gonna be like let's do a demo no this video is about how we plan we don't do a demo in a planning video , so this is an optional step.
I would suggest doing this if you're rearranging furniture in a space or bringing in new pieces, so this is the time when you want to do a more sophisticated type of room layout. I love using Smart Draw and it is a program that allows you to create a two scale diagram, it also allows you to place furniture and insert measurements like the sofa you are looking at so you can see how it will look in your space and if it is going to fit. , so step five is to create a mood board. You've heard me talk a lot about creating mood boards, but this is a great way to see how all the products you're drawn to will look together in a room in front of you.
I shop often people ask me I have a room with blue walls and I don't know which rug to choose. I think it's because people don't take that kind of extra step of creating a mood board and seeing what looks good combined with a mood. The board process for me is never linear. I'm constantly going back and forth dragging things toTake them away and it's like a puzzle where you just want to get to a place where you feel good and you're excited about how the space works. seen on the screen, you don't want to rush this process unless you have a very clear vision, all the power to you, but I find that I really want to take a step back, think about it, showing different people again is always very helpful , you want new eyes, Hello guys.
So since you now know my entire process of planning a makeover, I thought I'd go through the mood board I created and show you what I'm thinking for this kitchen, so let's start with the utility closet. I'm excited about the idea of making vintage pantry style doors. These are doors that usually have a cutout, usually there's glass there, but Noah and I agreed that we want something that you can't see because this closet isn't, you know? We're going to stay clean and tidy and we don't want the pressure of having to stay clean and tidy, so I'm going to look for something old and maybe we'll have to do some kind of DIY to make the glass non-transparent, but that's the idea for the doors.
Noah and I were also saying that we really liked natural wood, but it really all depends on what we can find, so in the mood board I also added this pharaoh ball color. dove, I'm actually planning in a video coming up to paint this wall dove color, so I thought it would look really nice as if they were tied together. We were also thinking about doing it as a grayish color as well of pharaoh and ball, so we'll have to like address that once we start looking for the doors and see what's out there, but that's the plan for this side and then move on to This side, as I mentioned, we need a new refrigerator, so Noah and I are thinking we would love to have a new refrigerator. white cream snack refrigerator I mean who doesn't but Noah brought up a good point a smeg might not fit in this cutout as this cutout is pretty specific I'm pretty sure ikea cabinets were built for fit this specific refrigerator, so noah.
I'm going to do some measurements and see what I can find and if a Smeg refrigerator will fit in there, fingers crossed the side of the refrigerator area is where we are going to do the open shelves and this was actually a last minute decision but what I'm thinking is taking the same backsplash that I'm putting here on this entire wall, so let's take out the cabinets, my dad is going to help with that and then backsplash all over that wall, I think that looks pretty cool talking about backsplash. backsplash, the backsplash I chose I'm waiting for samples.
I ordered them last night. They're like a fun take on the standard subway tile, really organic and I think these tiles will really bring the character into this space while still keeping it neutral. and I like it over the years because I find that with those pattern tiles I would really love to make a pattern, but pattern tiles are going to go out of date very quickly, you know, for cabinets, I actually found a company that It's called new cabinets they make. custom custom cabinet doors, so even if you have an old ikea kitchen, they can still make the doors fit, we don't replace any of the actual cabinets, we just remove the doors and then put new ones on, and I'm thinking of doing a shaker style, so something really classic but still simple and I would really love to do something in white.
Noah was worried that the white cabinets would blend in too much with the backsplash and counter, but we'll see once. we get the backsplash as it all looks together because I assume the backsplash has enough dimensions and color tones that it won't blend with the knobs. I was thinking of just using my gold hex knobs that were on the tree. house, I brought them with me and they're in great condition, the West Elm ceiling light and I love that it has two lights because this kitchen actually gets pretty dark at night and I was trying to think of a way to be able to You know ?
Two lights are hanging but there is only one outlet on the ceiling so this light solves it and I think it's like the classic the gold interior will join with the knobs and the black exterior will join with our stools the bench area I'm going to reupholster the cushions my friend mandy has a company called hems i will join them below and she will help me reupholster the cushion covers and the pillowcases and these are the fabrics that noah and I are Thinking of something really dark but patterned for the seat cushions and then for the Roman blind, something striped, so there are a lot of patterns but patterns that still complement each other.
I'm also thinking that we'll make a kind of herb garden in this corner. It's actually Noah's idea and I love it, so I thought I'd get those little wall hooks, put terra cotta pots on them, and turn this into an herb garden that we can use when we're cooking. There you go guys, that's the plan I took. Some know. Days of back and forth and thinking of last minute ideas, but that's how it always happens, you have to really think about it, take a step back, think about it some more until you find something that feels right, I hope have enjoyed. a look at what my kitchen will look like when i fix it up my parents are coming in august.
I'm hoping my dad will help me revamp this space, so make sure you're subscribed, you won't want to miss this makeover. It's going to be something epic, we're going to renovate this kitchen. I can not wait. Many thanks to Millinote for sponsoring this video. Be sure to use the link in my description box below to sign up for a
